TINRS Tuesday + Qubit Chord - exploration time 1

Published on Aug 20, 2017 Gibran Curtiss

"Just arrived this amazing module called Tuesday.
Really impressive !!
Endless melody creator.
Plug it on one oscillator and have fun !
PS: in this video, sometimes a note seems to be out of tune, but it was my fault: I used an attenuator between modules to control the cv, but without a quantizer.
The notes leaves Tuesday perfect.
The module have a configuration that you can change the transpose options.
Next time no attenuators :-)
In this video the X and Y were used a lot.
The Algo was changed a little :-("

Whittled down from 19 Minutes+. Glad that's over with.

Incredibly full-bodied and musical Resonance on this ladder filter, especially after Tim Caswell's latest OS tweaks which cleaned everything up.

Percussa MIDI MPE Support Details + Module Group #1 List

via the Percussa Kickstarter campaign:

"The past couple of days we worked on a proposal for how the MIDI MPE Support will work in the Percussa SSP. Besides that we also came up with a list of modules for Module Group #1 (= Stretch goal #2). You can find all details below! We're pretty excited about this :-)

We are almost at the first stretch goal, MIDI MPE Support, so please SHARE our update on facebook, twitter, instagram and any other social media channels you use to help us spread the word: EVERYONE wins when more people back the project, because the more stretch goals we reach the more software modules all backers receive. MOAR MODULES!

MIDI MPE IMPLEMENTATION PROPOSAL v1

Quick reminder of how MPE works: an MPE controller (such as a Linnstrument or ROLI Seaboard) sends each note on a seperate MIDI channel. MIDI Channel #1 is a global channel which is used for sending global expression data. So the remaining channels 2-16 are used for notes.

Here is what I suggest for the MIDI MPE Support to be implemented on the Percussa SSP: we make 2 modules, MPE channel and MPE global. You can find the explanation of how the modules work below.

1) The MPE channel module can generate a control (modulation) signal based on the MPE data that is received. The module can be set to only listen to a specific MPE channel (= note).

So if a note is received on channel 5, along with its expression data, the user can use the encoders to “mix” together the data from the note however (s)he wants. If (s)he just wants to use the pitch of the note to generate a pitch signal that can be sent to an LFO, (s)he just turns up the “pitch” encoder to 1.00. If (s)he also wants to use the “glide” data along with pitch, (s)he can turn up the “glide” encoder to 0.50 for example, or whatever value (s)he wants.

Using the +CH and -CH buttons the user can change which channel the MPE channel module is listening to.

When the user is happy with the signal generated it can then be routed to whatever modules the user wants to route to, using the routing system in the synth engine.

The user can create as many of these MPE channel modules as (s)he wants. You can even have multiple modules listening to the same channel, but using the incoming data differently to generate an output (modulation) signal.

This way the MPE data can be used for driving synth voices (traditional use) but it can also be used to control modules in unusual ways.

2) The MPE global module lets you similarly generate modulation signals using incoming MPE data on channel 1. For example, XY data or Slider 1/2/3 or pedal data can be used to generate signals.

The user can have multiple of these modules, potentially using the same data differently to generate different modulation signals which again can be routed to whatever (s)he wants to route to.

MODULE GROUP #1 PROPOSAL v1 (STRETCH GOAL #2)

advanced modules (2)

sampler module with time stretching: allows you to load a WAV file and play it back looped or one shot, with the ability to change the sample’s pitch or length without affecting the other.
granular processor: an advanced granular processer module with support for different kinds of windows, with control over the spread of the grains, grain length, grain speed, grain pitch, offset, etc.
simple modules (3)

simple delay: a simple delay line to delay signals, mostly useful for signals that are used as control (modulation) signals.
bit crusher: a module to reduce the resolution of signals, for example from 32 bit to 8 bit.
physical modeling membrane: allows you to feed a signal trough a membrane implemented using physical modeling."

Prophet 12 Choir and Sawtooth Solo Patches

Published on Aug 20, 2017 Sacred Synthesis

"Alas, this is from my last batch of Prophet 12 demonstrations, and who knows when I will have a Prophet 12 again? It has been a musical joy to play this masterpiece for the past month.

The first section of music contains the best choir patch I was able to design. I'm sure others could improve on it, but for now, this is my one mediocre contribution to the synthetic choir type sound.

In the second section, the Poly Evolver Keyboard provides a string accompaniment, while the soaring sawtooth solo is played on the Prophet 12. This is an immensely important sound for me, and I wanted to test the Prophet 12's ability with it. As a result, I spent a full two hours making one improvisation after another.

Note that all the Prophet 12 demonstrations I've made have used the two pair of output jacks as a means of producing a six-voice stereo sound, including the monophonic Sawtooth patch.

In my opinion, the P12 makes a superb sawtooth solo patch, and it even surpasses the Poly Evolver Keyboard's version of the same sound. With that, the Prophet 12 has officially passed its Music Room exam, and I hope and expect to own one some time in the future.

Modular : Fun with SynthTech E350, E440, and Friends

Published on Aug 20, 2017 Mike Thomas

"Not really a complete musical piece -- more of an experimental romp with a patch I set up with the E350 and E440 as the centerpieces and Qu-Bit Chance and Disting as the "drivers".

Experimenting with a patch such as this is where most of my musical ideas come from. Not sure this one will become anything, but it was sure fun to play with.

Patch Notes
==========
The E350's XY and Z outputs are mixed, and the resulting mix is split to two different processing routes.

One route goes through Warps, then Streams (into a vactrol channel, over to a limiter/compressor channel), and on to 2hp Delay and Verb, then to final mix.

The other route goes through the E440, and on to Clouds and then final mix. There is no envelope/VCA in this route.

Lots o' modulation provided by Chance. Its various random outputs are used to modulate Warps algorithm and timbre, and to modulate the E350's wave selections, and the E440's frequency cutoff.

Chance's clock drives Disting in Turing Machine mode, which feeds E350's v/oct input.

I provide overarching modulation and just have some fun experimenting."

Frap Tools SAPÈL demo

Published on Aug 20, 2017 Learning Modular

"This is a 2-minute demo of running the SAPÈL through its paces to add lots of variation to a simple arpeggio. I use three different sections of it, adding octave jumps to the second VCO, changing which vocal formant is being used, and slowly varying the main filter cutoff. I then use one knob to bias all three together toward low or high voltages, and play with randomly skipped gates to the filter's envelope.

I'm working on a set of more detailed videos on using the SAPÈL on August 31, but I thought this excerpt (the first 2 minutes of the first video) will give you a taste for what the module can do."

it has 2 ENVs but the second one is AR-type only (VCO), most other smaller SH only have one ADSR, the VCO has PWM and the typical subOSC that can also work 2 octaves below the main OSC...
the filter is 24dB/oct LPF and a static hpf - thats what the SH and even the Jupiter and juno series kept in it's concept.. it has pink and white noise, later models had white noise only. (exept the sh5 / sys100) - the sh1 also has an envelope follower...'"

Roland S-10 old school sampling tutorial/workflow - Free samples download

Published on Aug 20, 2017 Espen Kraft

"Performance of the track 'Ocean Drive - Main theme' 17:47

Todays episode is a review and demo of one of my all time favourite samplers, the budget (of its time) sampler Roland S-10. It has "only" 4.4 secs of total sampling time and it holds only max 4 sounds in its memory at a time. Each of the ABCD slots/banks can hold 1.1 sec of sampling time.

Despite all its limitations it has remarkable many features and a killer arpeggiator as well and the sound on this is incredible, especially at the low end. The 12 bit 30KHz converters give this sampler a low end grit that really is very musical and provides perfect counterpoint to more modern sounds. Its big brother, the S-50 has the same sound and even more sampling time.

The S-10 was one of my first samplers so it holds a special place in my heart and I had lots of fun with it back in the day and even did gigs with it of course as it WAS a pro sampler in its day despite its shortcomings in the memory department.

S-10 manager software can be downloaded here:
http://s10manager.corlinks.nl/#C

A set of my own original samples for the S-10, not obtainable anywhere else on the net can be found here:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/0i7oybeovyi...

Please give me credits if you use those in any commercial way, thanks!

The track "Ocean Drive - Main theme" is recorded with only the S-10 sampler and all the sounds come directly off the S-10. It has been multitracked as the S-10 can only hold 4 sounds in its memory at a time as described above and in the video.

The song can be downloaded through Bandcamp.
https://espenkraft.bandcamp.com/

My tracks pay homage to all synth.pop acts of the 80'ies like Howard Jones, Depeche Mode, Pet Shop Boys, New Order, Thompson Twins, Tears for Fears, Ultravox, OMD, Euryhmics, Duran Duran, Giorgio Moroder, Jean Michel Jarre, Jan Hammer, A-ha and many more.

A use mostly old gear on my tracks and among them Roland Juno 6, Alpha Juno 2, D550 and JX-8P. Korg DW-8000. Roland TR-626 drum machine. Yamaha DX7 and TX802 and drum machine RX11. I use the Novation Mininova as a vocoder on all my tracks. Effects are usually handled by Strymon and TC electronics. Sampling is done on my E-MU ESI-4000, Akai S1000 and Roland S-10."

"Here's a fun little, one-nighter track using all sounds from the new Analogue Solutions fusebox synthesizer!

All tracks were recorded from the AS fusebox and layered into Logic as they were dialed in. A touch of reverb was used on a couple of the sounds just to position them in the track.

Fusebox is shown here in its horizontal position, but can also stand vertically or be racked.

CAUTION: The Interval Generator AND the Patternator were used in the creation of this track!

Analogue Solutions Fusebox: Dirty, Filthy Bass Tweaking

Published on Aug 20, 2017

"Wait for it!

OK, a little fun reverse engineering a familiar bass line -- or not! :)

All in good fun, some NIN Closer remixing going on in real-time with the Analogue Solutions Fusebox synth.

This is by no means an attempt at a spot-on reproduction of the Closer bass line, but more a live tweaking and patching session with the new Fusebox synth showing only an inch of its sonic potential.

Fusebox can be as dirty or as clean as you require!

What's going on?

1. Fusebox is having its filter modulated by MIDI key/note velocity (Logic)
2. Fusebox pitch is being controlled via MIDI notes (Logic)
3. Patternator is creating patterns in real-time (intro)
4. Bass sound tweaked live on Fusebox while sampled beat resides on 2nd Logic track
5. Sound is dry without processing, and entirely Fusebox."

Digital Waves Roland JD 800

Published on Aug 19, 2017 100 Things I Do

"This week I thought it was time to take a look at the Roland JD-800 again. One of the most unique synths Roland has made to date. With an original list price of around $3000 back in 1991 when it came out it was the first sign that people were getting sick of presets and the pain of menu diving to create new sounds!

The JD 800 suffers from a few unique gremlins such as the 'Red Keys of Death" (The glue used to secure the key weights degrades over time and leaves a nasty trail of sticky goop and lost key weights!).

Delamination of the keybed connector is also quite common and then with so many digitally scanned sliders they get dirty and the machine can get quiet glitchy.

I have had to deal with each of the above problems over the years to keep this synth alive... which has surprised me due to me not actually using the synth much. The sound is like a Wavestation mashed with a D-50 , no real wave sequencing but you get 108 waves... saw, sine all the way to attack samples of various instruments. The Digital resonant filter adds even more unique flavour. The filter can be quite hard to dial in for the sound you want.

As I have said before I hardly ever use this synth and it is always on the potential chopping block to be sold when I find a new synth of interest :D"
