KORG prologue SDK Now Available

via KORG

"prologue introduces an open development API (Application Programming Interface) that allows users to extend the possibilities of the hardware via an SDK (Software Development Kit) and dedicated development tools. Via this SDK custom digital oscillators can be created for the MULTI ENGINE, and custom modulation effects can be added to the existing modulation effects. Users can then load these new custom oscillators and modulation effects into their prologue via the prologue Librarian application (Mac and Win).

Tone Lab - Stackable Componentized Hardware Synthesizer Kit by Colin Hearon

Tone Lab from Colin Hearon on Vimeo.

"Tone Lab is a musical synthesizer kit that upends the traditional software-based approach to digital music production techniques. Currently, music making software is structured in a very technical manner not conducive to learning. Complicated menus, idiosyncratic functions, and highly technical options are incredibly prohibitive to young, new artists. Tone Lab is restructured to be playful and informative, teaching the basic tools of digital music production by making them into physical building blocks that users can stack up, hearing how the effects interact with one another in real time. The pieces each have graphical elements that teach real industry terms so that users can acquire useful and relevant knowledge. This service allows new users to access the creative world of digital music making, broadening creative diversity in the field."

And a video form Aban Tech:

Published on May 23, 2018 Aban Tech

"Stackable and modular hardware synthesizer facilitates grooving

Industrial designer Colin Hearon set out to simplify the interface and has come up with an interactive, modular synthesis device called Tone Lab where players young or old stack up components to generate layers of sound. The Tone Lab is a great looking piece of kit. Sound sequences are created by selecting and stacking tone generator components to one end of the base and then using four sliding chord units to alter what's being sounded out. Sound generators include effects like reverb and delay, sine/square/sawtooth wave oscillators and filters, arpeggiators and so on. The idea is to build up as many or as few components of a sound that you want, starting with a waveform, then adding filters and effects. Each sound block connects to another via metal prongs to the bottom left. Activating the device plays back the chosen chords in a loop, influenced by the stacked sound components. The chord discs can then be used to modify the various parameters by sliding them up or down in their given slots. Naturally, you wouldn't want your sound stack tower to get too high or it may come tumbling down, but the design looks intuitive and easy to use."

Published on May 23, 2018 Dziam Bass

"Erica Synths- Pico System 2 (Patch 3) Experimental Downtempo/Hiphop song live.
All sound from Pico System 2.
The Erica Synths Pico System II is the world’s smallest modular synthesizer of its functionality, same as the Pico System I. However, as there have been several additions to the Pico Series, for example, the significant Pico Voice, its upgrade the Pico System to make it even more multifarious. There are two new modules in the system: the Pico Voice – a sound source, which gives quite a big timbral diversity, and the Pico Modulator, which replaces the Pico EG and the Pico VCA. That gives us a 3HP free space have filled with one more Pico A MIX for more handy control of the sound sources in live performances."

Moog Subharmonicon Reviewed and Explained

Published on May 23, 2018 loopop

"The Subharmonicon is a lovely, interesting and different synth from Moog. Only around 100 were hand soldered and built at Moogfest's 2018 Engineering Workshop, and there's no information currently about whether it will be released commercially.

Even though availability is scarce, I decided to put together a review of this instrument, because the way it works is such a breath of fresh air when it comes to sound generation and sequencing. Also, one would hope that Moog will eventually mass produce the Subharmonicon, as they did for most, but not all past Engineer Workshop projects, like the DFAM and Werkstatt.

This review includes an interview with Steve Dunnington from Moog, who led the Subharmonicon project. Steve talks about the vintage synthesizers (Trautonium and Rhythmicon) and composition theory (Schillinger system) that inspired this synth.

So what makes the Subharmonicon special? Two main things. First, it has six (!) oscillators. These are sawtooth oscillators, a tribute to the original Trautonium. There are two main oscillators and each has two sawtooth sub oscillators, which can follow its main frequency at subharmonic intervals – divisions of anywhere between 1 and 15.

The second thing that makes it special is its sequencers. Each of the two oscillator groups has a sequencer dedicated to it. Initially, it may seem these sequencers are limited because they only have 4 steps each. However, the Subharmonicon sequencers aren't designed to just be played in a regular step-by-step fashion. Rather, their cadence is powered by up to 4 tempo sub-dividers, also based on the principle of subharmonics. This rhythmic core produces sequences far longer than 4 steps, repeating and skipping notes in very interesting and surprising ways. Each of the two sequencers can be configured to control either the pitch of its main VCO (and sub oscillators) or just modulate the subharmonic divisions – thus generating different chords on a per step basis.

In addition to new elements above the Subharmonicon contains controls we're used to seeing in Mother-32 and DFAM: a resonant low pass filter, AD envelopes for the VCA and filter, and a 32-jack patch bay with access to many of the internal controls."

Transposing Sequences

Published on May 23, 2018 MAKEN0ISE

"Transposition of a sequence in the world of voltage control is nothing more than adding a voltage offset to the sequence voltage. This can be done with addition, in other words summing, in other words mixing, as in a MATHS, but if your VCO has a dedicated Exponential FM input then you don’t even need a mixer."

its 555 eurorack 1

Published on May 23, 2018 cirtcele

"This module turns any incoming signal into a series of 5 pulses. Each pulse can be inverted or positive and have its amplitude set. the Pulse width can be controlled by CV. A different kind of resonator.

Each has CV and pot controlled pulse width and the pulse for each can be set to be negative going or positive at any desired amplitude. The circuit is supposed to be driven by a signal from a VCO, but noise or chaos sorces are fun too. It creates five pulses that can be individually manipulated to create a complex and harmonically rich waveform. A slower clock signal will give clicks and glitches (so, a voltage controlled glitch module).
As the pulse widths can be individually controlled (or controlled en masse by “CV all”), this waveform can be continually morphed to get new sounds. When the 5 pulses are quite thin the effect is that of a resonator. The controls allow a wide pulse width, so fatter, thicker sounds can also be created.

"I'll have more in depth coverage coming with Future Music Magazine on their YouTube channel and in the magazine itself very soon but I just wanted to share my 'first patch' here with you all. It's a fairly simple 6 part drum sequence and entirely randomly generated synth line. We've got ratchets, probability over gates, probability over ratchets, shuffle, quantization. It's really quick to get some more comprehensive parts together, which is always a nice surprise with the bigger more complex sequencers."

"Real time build of the MusicThingModular Graphic EQ. I recommend this build for beginners. Fixed filter banks are very useful and highly underrated. Available at The photo at the end shows how I modified the module by drilling the jack holes out to allow the jacks plastic bushing to it in the panel a little. Less space between the pcb and panel. I also added 2 nylon flat washers to each of the screws on the sliders. This allowed me to properly tighten the screws for the middle pcb support. Not 100% necessary, but it makes me feel better knowing it’s secure. ^_^ Happy SynthDIY’ing!!"
