OB6: IT FOLLOWS ("Jay")

Published on Aug 2, 2018 Kris Lennox

"Another piece from the 'It Follows' soundtrack. Really beautiful work. The original has two layers - one is a chiptune, slightly gritty synth line, and the other is a string-like sound. The challenge with this recording was to create a sound somewhere between both. I think the included sound works quite well.

You'll probably hear the drift assigned to the patch. Very slight, but I think it works well. I also assigned aftertouch to drift - again, very subtle.

After purchasing the Obi I read a few reviews, just to see what others think. One gripe reviewers seem to have is the 49-key range. As you can see from this recording, the range isn't too much of a problem - as long as you are creative with it :) When my LH is swinging out of shot I'm altering the octave.

I'm sure my followers have noticed of late that I'm posting a rather large volume of music. I must add that I'm not actually spending hours each day working videos etc. To give some background: before speaking to other musicians, I always thought perfect pitch was just 'normal', and everyone had it. To me, the sound of , say, the note C (for example) is very obvious as it sounds 'C-ish', in much the same sense someone looking at red knows it is red as, well, it looks red!

For some reason I was also always able to play something back after hearing it. If a complex piece, it would take two or three listens before I could play it.

As a musician, being able to play most things after hearing them is great (after seeing 'It Follows' in the cinema, I went home and played through the soundtrack. It's such a great score I had to play through it). As a listener, though, it is terrible, as after hearing something once a tune becomes tiring, as the brain knows it. As a product of this, I flick between two polarities - the first is avoiding listening to anything at all - with the second being consuming everything there is to be listened to.

My point - a recording such as this only takes a few minutes. Prior to recording, I had a listen through the track again as a quick reminder, as I hadn't heard it in about a year or so. After this it was simply a case of setting up the camera/Tascam etc. Quick and easy, and nice to share the recording/archive of how to play the pieces."

RIT M Sequencing Many Samples

Published on Aug 2, 2018 freshnelly

"As many RIT_M users are using their sequences to control samples I thought I'd chime in and do a bit of that myself!
It helps if the samples are slices from a set progression or in a set key. These samples are from the Reflex Liveloop Flash-8 Expansion demo so are in Cm except the drums.

There are a lot of samples and the Reflex uses the CV input to offset selection of these samples. There aren't exactly 60 samples to cover the +0-5V range (default RIT_M setting) so sometimes there's thresholds that can go one way or the other, thus producing a random adjacent sample glitch.

I personally like this as it adds variance, but can be made more stable by adjusting the RIT_M's CV-to-Gate pulse delay. It's default at 1mS but can be set up to 8mS to allow more time for the CV (and Reflex circuitry) to stabilize.

I guess a good lesson here is to keep all of the samples in the same key with variety to easily implement a sequence with them!"

Endorphin.es Grand Terminal as a Full Synth Voice

"Here's a potentially unexpected way to use the Grand Terminal from Endorphin.es ... A SYNTH VOICE! Complete with VCO with variable wave shapes, dual series filter (state variable high pass into low pass here - MS-20 style!) and an envelope to modulate the filter. The icing on the cake is the excellent FX section with is in the tape echo emulation here which has a great modulated / saturated warm echo trail. Lovely stuff!"

nonlinearcircuits Shat noir Phaser

Published on Aug 2, 2018 cirtcele

"The core of the Shat-noir phaser is based on classic LDR based phaser designs, notably the Carlin, Compact Phasing A, Morely Phaser and ADA final Phase. The CV drive is an anti-log circuit, it works a little differently as both the CV and phase pots must be adjusted to find the sweet spots. The In2 pot is 0 at centre, the incoming signal is inverted below that. it is intended as a feedback input for one of the stage outputs, but shove in whatever you want of course.

Please note the build pictures below when constructing to make the box fairly light-proof. A little bit of leakage does not seem to matter much but you could add a bit of black silastic sealant around the edges if you really want to. When soldering the connector pins, use the SIP connectors, jumped across 1 or 2 pins (see pics) to ensure they are nicely perpendicular to the PCB. When soldering the PCB to PCB connectors, I press lightly on the PCB to help keep the connectors tight against the board.

The PCBs are 2mm thick with black soldermask to prevent light getting in. Also, please note the pots go on the side of the PCB that has the pot symbol screenprinted, this is different to previous NLC PCBs……I try to conform, its hard, really hard. Anyway look at the pics to make sure.

PCB set = USD24 Panel = USD22 assembled = USD220"

Introducing Ribn: iOS MIDI controller app

Published on Aug 2, 2018 once upon a synth

"Ribn is an iOS MIDI CC controller app with 8 looping ribbon pads.

I built this app because I wanted a simple tool to be able to add automation to my hardware MIDI gear. You can use it to control any MIDI synth or effects, as long as they respond to CC parameters. Ribn allows you to assign an individual MIDI channel and CC# for each ribbon.

By default the ribbons record your finger movement and start looping when you lift it. You can of course turn looping off which turns the ribbons into standard real-time controllers."

Matrixbrute: IT FOLLOWS ("Playpen")

Published on Aug 2, 2018 Kris Lennox

"Try with cans on for the bass etc. Brilliant soundtrack. The included is an arrangement of the track 'Playpen'. It is a little-known track from the soundtrack - but is fantastic. You can find it here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=doi8BvqRvSI

The dial you can see me turning near the top RH corner - this is the fine-tune. The pitch of the work drifts through a semitone whilst the patterns change. Therefore, this work is in fact microtonal. Or rather, it is microtonally drifting. It gives a very odd and unique effect. Great stuff.

On the original the pitch dive is VST automated - but personally I prefer hands-on. Plus - as you'll see from the video - I'm diving the pitch to reach the lowest point on a specific bar, then raising it again to a specific bar. However, this means the transitioning pitches are never at the same rate across parts i.e. I can't exactly dive with perfect synchronicity on each part. Personally, I think this gives the music even more oddness, and brings the sense of the pitch dive to life more than a standard 'all dive the same' - which is the result of VST automation. Of course, different rates can be programmed on a computer - and this is easier to fix than having to redo an entire take - but as a player I enjoy sitting at an instrument far more than sitting at a screen. There's a time and place for both - but give me the choice and I'd choose being at an instrument.
