There are lot of circuit bend instrument in the studio, maybe its contagious, perhaps a glitch in the Mirage's memory or disk, maybe its just simply alive and possessed by a ghost withing than never revealed it's self in all the years I've owned it.
It can surelly compose some interesting computer music."

1. Roland Piano Plus HP-450 PB-300 PR-800 MIDI Creation System
"A walk through of the Piano Plus system which for 1983-1984 was an introduction into what would develop into the 'Workstation' keyboard where you could record a composition and then add additional parts.

This is a much simpler technology but still very fun to create on.

I've hooked it up to a Nord Rack 2 to garnish more synth sounds."

2. Roland PR-800 MIDI recorder quick one-hand demo with PB-300 Piano Plus HP-450

"I hit record and play on the Roland Piano which goes into the PR-800 and gets recorded. Then I hit stop, go back to the start of the measures/bars and hit play.

The PR-800 then outputs the recorded digital sequence to the Nord Rack 2. I can change the tempo on the PR-800 or change the sound on the Nord of course. Can also play along with the Roland HP-450 piano to add a melody. All sound can go through the HP-450 amp and speakers.

A very simple but effective early MIDI recorder/sequencer, the 1983-1984 Piano Plus system by Roland consisted of the HP-450 Analog piano (great keyboard feel), the PB-300 analog drum machine and the PR-800 "Piano Recorder."

Together they gave your MIDI keyboard setup the ability to record a song in MIDI event capture, then play it back either via the HP-450 or to any external MIDI tone generator. The drum machine supplied preset "home organ" type of beats but also created arpeggiator out back to the piano or to an external MIDI device.

Consider this a home organ broken out into separate components you could mix and match with other gear in your MIDI setup. Or consider this perhaps the first Keyboard Arranger ever, certainly the first from Roland - later taking the form of the RA-90, RA-95 and so on.

The arpeggiator provided either note-runs or comping chords and there was a separate analog oscillator that created bass lines within the PB-300 as you held down a chord in your left hand.

Lastly, you could run outputs of the PB-300 or other MIDI gear through the HP-450 system to create a cohesive instrument via the HP-450 amplifier and speakers.

A rare and unique piece of MIDI history during the early days of MIDI and home Personal Computing as well.

I had not previously come across a basic demo of what the Roland PR-800 does, so here is one finally. There is also provision on the back to save your digital MIDI recordings via cassette tape!"

Novation // Launchpad X Overview Videos

via Novation

"Marking ten years since the arrival of the original Launchpad, Novation is immensely proud to release the latest full-sized and portable versions of the world’s favourite Ableton Live grid controller: Launchpad X and Launchpad Mini [MK3].

Made to perform, Launchpad X is Novation’s essential MIDI pad controller for Live, enabling fast and effortless clip and scene launching, expressive instrument play, and direct transport and mixer control. Launchpad X’s 64 velocity- and pressure-sensitive RGB pads are Novation’s most responsive yet, while Drum and Note Modes provide automatic switching between percussive and melodic instrument triggering, and the dedicated Capture MIDI button means you’ll never lose a great idea again. Dynamic Note and Scale modes keep your basslines, melodies, chords and leads perfectly in key, and crucial performance controls – stop, solo, mute, record arm, levels, pans and sends – are a button press away. With USB-C connectivity and no drivers to install, Launchpad X puts everything you need right at your fingertips, so you can spend less time mousing around and more time making music.

Made to move, Launchpad Mini is Novation’s most compact and portable 64-pad MIDI grid controller, giving you everything you need to start performing in Ableton Live - and it'll fit in your bag. Bright RGB pads perfectly match your clips and scenes, making it easier than ever to see your Ableton Live sessions, while immediate and tactile access to Live’s performance controls liberate you from the mouse and keyboard, and Drum and Note modes let you instantly flip between playing beats and melodies.

Extending Launchpad X and Launchpad Mini’s remit beyond Ableton Live, you can customise the MIDI mappings of each within three (Mini) or four (X) custom modes using Novation Components, for control of almost anything. Send out MIDI CCs, notes and program change messages, and even use rows or columns as faders – the only limit is your imagination. And both models come complete with a comprehensive bundle of included software, including Ableton Live Lite, a range of plug-ins by AAS, XLN Audio, klevgrand and Softube, two-months’ free subscription to Splice, and membership of Sound Collective, bringing Novation hardware owners a new free plug-in every couple of months.

Whether you prefer the advanced features and velocity sensitivity of X or the unrivalled portability of Mini, there’s a Launchpad for every performer and producer. Launchpad X and Launchpad Mini are available now through Novation stockists and direct from the Novation eStore*. (*where applicable)."

Voice Ping Strum by Michael William Gilbert, Electronic Music Composer

"On the 40th anniversary of the release of 'Moving Pictures' and in commemoration, MWGilbert has a new release, exclusively on vinyl. The title, 'Voice Ping Strum' is an anagram of 'Moving Pictures'. This new album was composed using a Eurorack modular synthesizer; especially noteworthy in his rig is the full range of Tall Dog Electronics Eurorack modules, which feature prominently on the recording. The only other sound sources used were sampled piano & sampled voices. There are 2 suites, 1 on each side. These have been described as more intricate than ambient, and more ambient than not!

Available from Burning Shed Records and Perfect Circuit

MW Gilbert has been composing and recording actively from the 1970's through the present. In 1979 he released his 1st LP, 'Moving Pictures', with the goal of humanizing electronic music, using wooden flutes, percussion, and voice to complement synthesized sounds and textures. After 7 more albums, in 2018 he released 'Radio Omnibus', with cutting edge electronic music, two acoustic chamber pieces, and featuring Adam Holzman (Miles Davis, Steven Wilson) and Mark Walker (Oregon, Lyle Mays).

MW Gilbert grew up in the US and Belgium. While living in Europe he encountered the music of Varese, Stockhausen, and Pierre Henry, as well as the music of India, Africa, and Japan. After studying electrical engineering at MIT, he continued studies at the Boston School of Electronic Music, and became a teacher there. He graduated with a degree in music from Hampshire College, and then served as the technical director of electronic music studios at Amherst College, Smith College, Hampshire College, and UMass Amherst. He has taught electronic music at Hampshire College, UMass Amherst, & Holyoke Community College.

New mioX and mioXM MIDI Interfaces from iConnectivity

via iConnectivity

"Today's a big day for us; it's the day we launch what we humbly believe are our best MIDI interfaces to date, the mioX series.

mioXL and mioXM offer super-charged network connectivity. Now you can use the power of the network to connect piles of computers (Mac, PC, and mobile devices). Additionally, there's more USB ports for peripherals and onboard presets.

If you are in need of MIDI connectivity, these interfaces are incomparable.

mioXL is our all-new flagship MIDI interface.

Taking the form of a 1U rackmount unit, mioXL features vast DIN-MIDI, USB-MIDI, and RTP/Network-MIDI connectivity. mioXL is an ideal choice for studio installations or MIDI intensive live rigs requiring huge amounts of connectivity.

What you'll notice straight away about the mioXL is its new, high-resolution OLED display and encoder, alongside obscene amounts of physical connectivity. 8-in 12-out DIN-MIDI ports, 10xUSB-MIDI ports and also 22 virtual RTP/Network-MIDI ports.

Brand new to the mioXL is also the ability to save and recall presets directly from the front panel of the interface. Perfect for DAW-less rigs or complex live setups.

It's XL by name and XL by nature; it's impossible to pack any more MIDI connectivity inside a 1U rackmount interface. Believe us, we tried!

mioXL makes you the master of your own MIDI domain

mioXM takes the fundamental architecture of the flagship mioXL and places it within a compact, half unit space enclosure.

Like its big brother, the mioXL, mioXM has unprecedented RTP/Network-MIDI connectivity. 12 virtual network ports, per mioXM, lets you assign an RTP/Network-MIDI port(s) for each of your connected peripherals and/or computing devices, and access them from virtually anywhere.

4 user-definable presets can be saved to the mioXM and recalled from the capacitive touch panel on the front of the interface. These allow you to quickly toggle between your four favourite configurations with a single tap.

Ideal for moderate-sized MIDI setups operating without a computer or any systems that require switching between multiple configurations on-the-fly.
mioXM is an ideal choice for compact, portable MIDI applications, or multiple placements throughout a studio, stage, or venue."

DIY analogue synthesizer jam

Published on Oct 14, 2019 SpamSundays

"Here's a project that I've been working on for a long time now. It has two AS3340 based VCOs, outputting either ramp or square wavefroms that can be mixed together the latter of which having a pulse width control knob, which can be modulated as well.

Other circuits include a simple VCA and an envelope with attack and decay controls, a resonant VCF and an LFO with sine, triangle and square waves. I also included a real tube distortion running at 120 volts B+ (non of that starved plate BS) to add some more harmonics to the sound. As a final touch I added a third 555 oscillator which can hard sync both VCOs for some more fun.

PWM, filter cutoff and the hard sync oscillator all can be modulated to make some absolutely crazy sounds.

Here's a patch I threw together with the Korg SQ-1 and some reverb coming from the Zoom MS70-CDR.

Enjoy!"

GForce Virtual String Machine (VSM) - Version 3.0 Update

via GForce Software

"As technological developments advanced through the late 1970s & early 1980s, the polysynth enveloped the capabilities of the string machine family of instruments, seemingly consigning them to the 'where are they now' dustbin.

But in much the same way that we played a big part in the rediscovery of the mellotron sound, in 2007 we had a similar role in resurrecting the tones of a range of iconic string machines, including the Freeman String Symphonizer, Eminent 310 and Solina String Ensemble, and bringing them back into vogue with release of VSM. In 2014 the addition of the VSM Expansion Pack (now updated) further expanded the range of available instruments and tones helping establish VSM as the go-to instrument for this wonderful family of instruments.

While the likes of Sound On Sound magazine were singing the praises of VSM ("It sounds absolutely gorgeous.") we always felt it lacked one crucial component found on some of our favourite string machines - stereo playback.

Instruments such as the Solina String Ensemble and Roland's wonderful 505 offered stereo outputs allowing their sublime, moving ensemble textures to sit perfectly within a wide stereo field. This one feature set such instruments apart highlighting just how stunning these, now ancient, analogue machines could sound.

VSM Version 3.0 rectifies this by providing stereo playback of a range of previously unreleased, carefully crafted stereo sounds-sets, plus two new interfaces sizes in two designs, and an additional LFO destination.

And it is FREE to registered users of VSM.

Now in stereo!
Along with the existing library of 17 instruments and 66 sound-sets, VSM Version 3.0 comes with a huge (3.5GB ) supplementary library of predominately stereo sound-sets from the following instruments; the aforementioned Solina String Ensemble and Roland 505, Roland's Juno 106, Yamaha's CS-60 and CS-80 providing 34 new sound-sets.

Several of the new sound-sets have been processed through a range of vintage effects such as the Boss CE-1 Chorus Ensemble pedal, Roland's Dimension D and the sublime Ventris Dual Reverb.

In addition to the sound-sets, over 150 new Patches are included, many providing the ideal starting point for your own tweaking, while others show off VSM in all its stereophonic glory.

2 new interface designs, each in 2 sizes

VSM Version 3 features a completely redesigned user interface with Small and Medium sizes in both Tolex and Wood guises.

The Small version is 1230 x 610 pixels in size with the Medium being 1640 x 813."
