Getting to know the Roland MC-707 (jam and thoughts)

Published on Oct 22, 2019 Jay Hosking

"A live, semi-improvised performance, all on hardware, and inspired by the feature set and sounds of the Roland MC-707. Overall, I find it to have great synth sounds and some fun performance features (knobs for filter and assignable parameters, master-level effects including DJFX from SP-404, and greatly expanded scatter effects) but also to have some odd design choices (not frontloading the parameters you want, distinctly unmusical scatter presets, thousands of pointless and bad synth presets) and some unfortunate drawbacks (voice stealing, most notably). Overall, a super fun all-in-one groovebox, but I'm still pining for Novation to make a proper successor to the Circuit.

Roland MC-707 — six synth tracks (noisy pad, arp, lead, bass, 2x clean pads), two drum tracks (regular and filtered), sequencing, and effects

Sequences written over the last couple weeks, performed and uploaded as is, with only a little compression/limiting on the master."

PM Foundations 6080 VCF Demo

Published on Oct 22, 2019 Randy Piscione

"This is a demo of a new Eurorack voltage controlled filter (VCF) from PM Foundations called the '6080 VCF.' It is based on their 2Q12 VCF, and is available as a panel and PCB combination. You can find it here:"

"Compact 6HP VCF for Eurorack Modular synthesizers

This is a state variable filter using the same core as our 2Q12 filter but substituting multiple unattenuated F and Q CV inputs with some on board attenutaors. Like the 2Q12, this filter has a nice fat sounding low pass output. The two pole filter has simultaneous -12dB per octave roll-off for high pass and low pass and a -12 db wide (-6dB either side) bandpass output. It has voltage control of cutoff frequency (F) and voltage control of resonance (Q). F and Q are adjustable with panel controls and from external sources using two F CV inputs and a Q CV input. One F CV and the Q CV have attenuators."

ARP 2600 for Restoration

via this auction

Cool pic of the 4012 V.C. Filter.

"For yourconsideration is an ARP 2600P (Version 4.0) analog Synthesizer (nokeyboard) for restoration. Judging by the writing on the inside ofthe cabinet near the spring reverb unit are the markings 4P. I haveevery reason to believe that this is the original cabinet which datesthe manufacturing year to be 1974. During this time ARP was using the4012 Low Pass Ladder Filter which was essentially a copy of the Moogdesign. This led to a patent dispute forcing ARP to change their LPFdesign for use in later models. Back in the early 1980's I designedand built my own analog synths and had an absolute blast using them. Then interests shifted and I moved on to other hobbies. Several yearsago I got the “bug” to get back into analog synths and I acquiredthis 2600 with the intention of restoring it to it's full beautyafter I retired. During that time I found and builta beautiful modular synth I know now I'll never part with. I've beenretired almost 2 ½ years and now that I have my “dream”modular synth I have no motivation to restore the 2600. I would loveto see this instrument go to someone who will bring this classic backto it's full potential. I never powered up the synthesizer since Ihad it so I don't know it's current electrical condition. With thatbeing said the synth should be restored by someone who is experiencedin this type of vintage equipment..."

MIDI Sprout PlantWave Prototypes Are Here

Published on Oct 22, 2019 MIDI Sprout

"When using the new device, you'll notice it doesn't require a wired connection to your phone or computer, unlike MIDI Sprout. This makes using PlantWave so much easier and significantly reduces cable clutter.

Third, you'll notice it has a USB port (this prototype has micro USB, but the final version will have USB-C). The USB port can be used to charge the device's built-in battery and/or stream data to a computer or phone via a wired connection, if desired.

So, I know what you're thinking... Does this prototype work? Well, have a look for yourself!

So, where do we go from here? Well, we still have some tweaking to do. We may play with configuration / placement of the ports, LEDs and display. And, we may have some final adjustments to de-couple the power circuit from the sensor circuit to ensure no interference when PlantWave is connected via USB. We also have some firmware updates to make that will allow for changes in scale and key to be made on the device, itself, in addition to happening via the app.

So, we're doing this! It's happening, but we still need to meet our $80k goal to actually do it. You know, like, deliver these magic boxes to mailboxes around the world.

So, if you haven't supported yet, pre-order PlantWave today to ensure we reach our goal! And if you have supported, let everyone know! Tell your friends about this campaign and let's bring PlantWave to life, together!"

G-Storm Electro on Reverb

Audio and Video by G-Storm Electro c. 2019

Third video on the Univox Minikorg.
This Minikorg has been modified to take an external pitch CV + gate signal.
It expects pitch in hz/v and lo-active gates.
While the Beatstep Pro can do it - it's a global setting.
Using my KVP module to convert the signals, it means I don't need to mess w/ the BSP globals whenever I hook up a Korg product.

Buchla Dual Oscillator Model 258 258c 258r

via this auction

"Excellent condition Buchla Dual Oscillator Model 258c from Roman Filippov kit. Meticulously assembled utilizing uA726s.

Two independent voltage-controlled oscillators, continuously tunable from 5 Hz to 20 kHz. Each has two processing inputs and a frequency modulation input. Waveshapes as well as frequency can be voltage controlled. Model 258 oscillators feature low sine wave harmonic content, negligible settling error, and high short and long-term stability, even with rapidly changing ambient temperatures.

Controls and I/O:

Processing inputs — Two processing control inputs permit multiple control of pitch without need of separate external processor.
Processing controls — Used to set desired range of frequency control. Expansion, compression, and inversion of scales are accomplished here.
Frequency modulation control — For adjusting vibrato depth or creating clangorous or bell-like tones, rich in non-harmonic partials.
Output — Signal amplitude is +4 dB. Output impedance is 600 ohms.
Oscillator frequency control — Spans the audio spectrum of 5 Hz to 20 kHz with no range switching. (Applied control voltages can extend limits to .1 Hz and 30 kHz.)
Waveshape control input — Waveshapes can be varied from sine to saw (osc 1) and sine to square (osc 2). Voltage control of waveshape enables powerful dynamic control of timbre."

Sequential Circuits Prophet 5 Previously Owned by Ric Ocasek / Syncro Sound SN 4450

via this auction

Not the seller does not have provenance for the Prophet-5:

"Kills me to do this, but up for grabs is a Sequential Circuits Prophet 5 Rev 3.3 previously owned by Ric Ocasek and Syncro Sound. This unit was purchased by Ric personally in 1982 for the Beatitude sessions (where it can be heard all over the album) and was also used for the Heartbeat City recording sessions along with Greg Hawkes Rev 2. After the Heartbeat City sessions, Ric said he shipped this Prophet 5 back to Boston where it lived until the studio's final ‘closing’ in the early 90s. When I first met Ric around 2012 he confirmed use on Beatitude and Heartbeat City, but made it very clear it was never used by the Cars live. I also cannot confirm it was used on any other specific recordings but many artists tracked at Syncro Sound including Benjamin Orr, Elliot Easton, Greg Hawkes, Peter Wolf, Nine Inch Nails, Iggy Pop, Ministry, Alan Vega (Suicide), New Kids on the Block, Cyndi Lauper, and many others. It was most likely used for some sessions considering it was the only Prophet 5 at the studio.

Please note, I do not have a COA for this item. I did reach out to Ric a few years ago about getting a COA for the Prophet 5 along with the JCM 800 I also have listed from Syncro Sound. His response to my request was that he would prefer to buy them back from me, to which we failed to come upon agreeable terms.

The cosmetic condition is very good to excellent, as it has been studio kept for nearly 40 years now. There is a few imperfections, but as you can see for the most part it is in wonderful condition. I last had it serviced in 2016 for routine maintenance. Fully functional and includes factory MIDI, which works great."

MAM Music and More ADX1 Analog Drum Synthesizer

via this auction

"Up for sale is a MAM (Music and More) ADX1 analog drum synthesizer. German made, sounds include bass drum, snare, hi-hat, metal and synth. All 5 sounds have multiple parameter that can be tweaked to get some very interesting electro sounds. It's important to note that the parameters for each sound are not controllable by MIDI, meaning you will not be able to program them from a DAW or controller. They can only be controlled by the knobs on the synth itself. It does not transmit any MIDI, only receives on the 5 MIDI notes to trigger the sounds. Comes with power supply and the manual which is only a single sheet of paper since the only thing you really need to know is how to set the MIDI channel and the MIDI notes that trigger the sounds. The unit has been tested and has retained all functionality." TB 11 Thought Box & TB 11 System 2017
