Wadada Leo Smith and Barry Schrader - Pacific Light and Water/Wu Xing - Cycle of Destruction

Barry Schrader has a new release with Wadada Leo Smith. Barry tells me there will be a CD version limited to 100 copies, 40 of which will be available through CD Baby starting January 15. There will also be an mp3 version available. Be sure to check out my interview with Barry Schrader here. There's some fascinating synth history to be discovered there.

Barry Schrader on the new release:

"In early 2005, I was approached by the remarkable composer/ performer Wadada Leo Smith to create what he calls an 'overlay' work. This is a work in which Wadada creates a composed/ improvisational performance on the trumpet against a fixed electronic piece that I had made. This overlay concept allowed each of us to create a work simultaneously, and then Wadada would perform his work over mine, allowing the fixed structure of my piece to influence his performance. Wadada's side of this unusual duet was Pacific Light and Water, and we had a discussion early on in the process about what we would do, in which Wadada gave me a drawing he made depicting the various frequencies of light that would filter through the Pacific ocean at different depths. My mind was filled with things Chinese at that moment from all of the research and work I had been doing on my work Monkey King, which I had already started composing, and so the water idea led to using the Chinese concept of "wu xing", of which water is one of the five elements (metal, wood, earth, water, fire). These are usually ordered in one of two ways: the cycle of birth, which ends with water, and the cycle of destruction, which ends with fire. I chose the latter for this piece, and, at Wadada’s request, created a graphic score (available from Theodore Front Music) to allow him to coordinate with the electronic music. This, then, is a rare combination of compositional approaches and means, blended into a unified whole."

New Year's Noodle with the Dave Smith Instruments OB-6

Published on Jan 1, 2020 Tim Shoebridge

"What better way to spend New Year's Day than a few hours of noodling on the absolutely amazing Dave Smith Instruments (and Tom Oberheim) OB-6!

All sounds apart from the drum track are from the OB-6. The Kronos in the video was used only as a controller keyboard. The drum samples were supplied by my favourite percussion library, Spectrasonics Stylus RMX.

All the very best for 2020!"

"This is a track wrote for a recent hike I went on called 'Angel's Rest' located in the Columbia river gorge basin. It's a five mile hike there and back with an elevation gain of about 1,640 ft. A bit grueling but completely worth it once you get to the top. Anyways Enjoy!

"This unique synth models the individual modules from classic synths and allow you to patch between them to create your own hybrid signal chains. See Sound on Sound review for further details.

Note the large patch select knob has a habit of 'slipping' over selectiing patches unless it's gently pushed in while revolving - I always find it easier to use the dec/inc/arrow keys anyway. Otherwise in great working condition."

"Part of its magic is its NCO's -these use a variable clock rate to control pitch that goes into megahertz (Similar to how the PPG oscillators worked) so there is never any aliasing. Driving the gain and oscillators (NCO's) through the 12 analog filters sounds magic and pleasing in this machine :)

Known issues:
##issue 1:- Quick recall 5 button is defective, was like that from brand new but have not exercised warranty repair as no authorised service agents in NZ and not worth shipping overseas for such a minor issue. ##"

Barker - Against The Clock

Premiered 113 minutes ago FACTmagazine

"Against The Clock is a series where we give an artist 10 minutes in the studio and see what they come up with.

This week, we visit the Berlin studio of Ostgut Ton artist and Berghain resident Barker, whose kick drum-free techno has provided some of the best records of the past few years.

In his Against The Clock, Barker hits our pleasure centers using a version of his current live setup, which includes an Elektron Octatrack and Digitone, Nord Drum and extra plate reverb.

Barker's latest album, Utility, is out now on Ostgut Ton: https://sambarker.bandcamp.com/album/...

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year everyone, or rather, Happy New Decade!

I want to thank everyone who visits the site, supporting members, and the sponsors you see above and to the right. You all make this site possible. So, thank you! I am humbled and grateful every day. The site will be going 15 years strong in 2020. Since then there has only been one single day w/o a post when I had no idea there would be something to post every single day. Every single post has gone up by hand, so the support is more than appreciated.

In 2019 we had a total of 13,069 posts. That comes out to an average of 35.81 posts a day, all by hand. We had 819 products new to the site, including 112 new makers, and 64 older items never featured before. You can find a breakdown of some categories here.

In 2019 we lost the following people: Alan R. Pearlman, Mark Hollis, Mike McGrath of Muff Wiggler, Philippe Zdar of Cassius, John Blacet, Carl Matthews, and Gershon Kingsley. I keep hoping for a year we do not lose anyone. These are always the hardest posts to put up for so many reasons. They never feel good enough.

---

That said, synth history continues to be made and I hope to be able to continue to capture it here on MATRIXSYNTH. The good and the bad...

I'm going to keep this post relatively short this year. I'm guessing most of you reading it are daily visitors and are more than familiar with what has, and continues to go up throughout the year. Know as long as posts go up, I am always here and I will always be a daily constant for you as long as I am able. I hope the site brings some pleasure in your daily routine. Consider the site family, but one that hopefully doesn't bother you too much. :) But don't worry, aside from the occasional post like this one, I do my best to stay out of posts, and let the content speak for itself.

Thank you for all the support! You have no idea how much it truly means. I do exist, and you all help keep me and the site moving forward.

Happy New Year everyone! Happy New Decade! :)

cheers,
matrix
