Complex Sounds of the Interstellar Radio

video by Patchwerks Seattle

"In this video resident expert Matthew Piecora explores the vast timbers the Schlappi Engineering Interstellar Radio offers as a complex oscillator.

- Simulates the process of modulating and demodulating a signal for radio transmission
- Effect or complex oscillator (non v/oct)
- Voltage controlled aliasing, distortion, and frequency modulation effects
- Two wide ranging voltage controlled square wave oscillators with individual outputs
- CARRIER oscillator converts input into high frequency pulse train
- DEMODULATOR oscillator inside control loop brings sound back to audio range
- CV applies external voltage control to oscillators or uses input signal as audio rate FM
- Internal oscillators can be replaced with external modulation sources
- TYPE selects demodulation loop type (changes timbre and response)
- ERROR output with threshold control
- TONE control for filtering out the harshest of frequencies
- All analog design
- 14 HP

Strega | Episode 02 | Understanding Strega - feat. Teleplexer 'expander'.

video by Cinematic Laboratory

"The best way to learn and understand Strega is to check out Alessandro Cortini's tracks and performances on YouTube. You'll be diving into sonic landscapes that are beautiful, dark and magical. I wondered Strega would probably perform very well in these genres and styles. It's not your typical ambient dream machine, it's next level. In this video I'll be using Arbhar and Desmodus Versio to bring the raw sounds to production level.

In my previous 'first patch' video I did not use any of the touch terminals, so in this episode it's a main subject. If you own an old Teleplexer, get it near because it's proven to be a great Strega expander. Teleplexer is recently discontinued so it may still be in stock at your local dealer - and it's one of the cheaper MN modules."

Spot the differences: PEAK vs. MPC One (sound design)

"Trying to create exactly the same filter sweep / brass sound on the Novation PEAK (a hybrid synth with analog filters) and the Akai MPC One (a groovebox with built-in virtual analog synths). Up to a certain point, both sound pretty much the same - what could that be? ;-) Table of contents:

STEREOPING Synth Controller for Ensoniq Mirage

2021/03 video by Stereoping

"1985 #Ensoniq released the #8-bit #Sampler 'Mirage'. Great features and sound but a nightmare to edit. In 2021 - just 36 years later - Stereoping offers a little #Midicontroller making things a little easier. For technical reasons, the Controller only works with #MASos - the "Mirage Advanced Sampling OS". It can not tune in absolute values as we are used to today. The Controller simulates button-presses on the frontpanel. When moving a knob it sends commands to the #Mirage like "press PARAM, press 3, press 6, press VALUE" to select Cutoff and show it's value on display. Moving the knob outside the 12 o'clock deadzone starts to send consecutive presses of INCREASE or DECREASE in 3 different speed grades to adjust the value itself. Sounds complicated but it works quite well.
This demo shows how to build a complete program with 11 samples and their upper and lower memory assignments in 5 minutes! Without Controller it would most probably take much longer (i must admit, i did not try it). The video uses a speedup to prevent sending spectators to sleep, hopefully. The background shows a real-world clock to proove it's not fake-demo.
From 3:27 the defined memory areas are filled with samples... choosing wavesample slot, adjusting external volume, starting sampling, adjusting sampling time for long samples etc.
From 6:57 the complete Program is used for a little Drum and Bass mockup - even with realtime adjusting of "AMP Release time" - kind of stutter effect :-)

Unless you own or know the Ensoniq Mirage, this video will be quite boring. Maybe you enjoy the background music, Tabla and Sitar are played by the Mirage."

Live, 140BPM: L‘amour toujours (Gigi D‘Agostino), played on Korg Volca & ...

video by O.S.cillator

"Well, guys, this is a cover version of what is said to be a real dance floor classic, which came to light by the very end of the last century. Yes, it‘s that old. But still Signore D‘Agostino manages to fill big arenas and everyone seems to know the hook tune. It’s about to become the „Smoke On The Water“ or „Seven Nation Army“ of dance music. Well, maybe I‘m wrong here. Or not. Who knows.
Nevertheless, and even though I am not into dance music myself and there are already so many cover versions existing, I was in the mood to give it a ride on my mini synths.
Hope you like it..."

ANTIQUA GRAECIA by Tasos Stamou

Tasos Stamou is the man behind numerous DIY and circuit bent projects.

via Tasos: https://tasosstamou.bandcamp.com/album/antiqua-graecia

"I am really pleased to announce my new solo LP “Antiqua Graecia” by IKUISUUS label. Digital pre-orders available now, while the official release date is March 25th, which is a National Holiday in Greece and this year celebrating (or at least was supposed to) 200 years of National Independence (or not?). Strange times to celebrate anything really, but this paradox is already included inside the music of this album.

The LP version will be available in late April and vinyl pre-orders will also be available in March 25th. 300 limited copies, so no messing around if you want to have it.

'Antiqua Graecia' is the third part of the trilogy of electroacoustic compositions inspired by Greek music culture. Following the previous two relevant releases, which are capturing the vibe of Cretan tradition (Musique Con Crete) and rembetiko music (D.A.D), ‘Antiqua Graecia’ comes to complete the cycle by capturing the essence of the rural mainland countryside. While references of antique Greek folk instruments and voices are present all across the album, the narrative is mainly assembled by analogue synthesizers and computer music arrangements, reconstructing the pieces of folk originals into a music collage depicting the vibe of (one more) dying folklore culture, towards a future reincarnation of it. Kind regards, Tasos Stamou http://www.tasosstamou.com"

Super mmMiditroid

video by ALM TV

"An all ALM system playing the ‘Brinstar’ theme from Super Metroid composed by Kenji Yamamoto in 1994. Super Metroid released 27 years ago today!

Original Version: [below]

Patch Notes:
2 mmMidi’s are chained via a standard 3.5mm headphone splitter. This provides 4 CV / Gate / Velocity and 8 Trig outputs to control the whole system. Midi data is sent from Ableton controlling the following voices:

(Red / Blue Cables) - 2x Akemie’s Castle voices for pad sounds controlled by Pip and Quaid, each out patched to 2 channels of Tangle paired with Pam and Jumble Henge to create autopan. Velocity changes attack time of the envelopes between sections.

(Green Cables) - Akemie’s Taiko as a percussive synth voice, patched out to Squid using channels 6, 7, and 8 as a stereo delay (see the squid 'deep dive' videos for info on setting this up).

(Yellow Cables) - MCO / MUM M8 as a simple square bass voice, with filter manually controlled and VCA controlled by Pip.

(Black Cables) - Squid’s first half as 4 drum sounds in similar style to the original composition.

All mixed down to Stereo via the Jumble Henge."

**No Talking!** ***Watch in HD!!*** **Turn it UP!!!***

Roland JU-06A + Yamaha TX7 (DX7) Dark Ambient Layers.
I am using the Korg Kronos as a MIDI controller for this video.
Both JU-06A + TX7 are on MIDI channel 1. Simple synth layer!
Both synths give that vintage flavor without breaking the bank!
The TX7 is fantastic for having a DX7 to work with & the JU-06A
is great for having the JUNO-60 + JUNO-106 in one for the money!
Another demo of this pair together coming soon!

"Item is great condition and comes with the TE minijack cable pack and a Power supply to power it from mains. The PSU is essential as the battery PSU the POM400 comes with is terrible, it will only run with fresh batteries and they will run out very quickly so I would say it is only suitable for mains powered via the included mains to DC PSU"

Osmose key feature: Pressure-weighted Portamento

video by Expressive E

"Haken Audio's advances in the development of integrating their EaganMatrix sound engine with our Augmented Keyboard Action have made it possible to bring an exclusive feature to Osmose players, a feature that was previously only available on the Haken Audio Continuum Fingerboard: Pressure-weighted Portamento.

This patented technology takes advantage of the sophisticated sensor technology within each key of Osmose's Augmented Keyboard Action: A player can define a pitch interval within which two keypresses are interpreted as a legato line instead of polyphonic playing. Unlike regular portamento that makes the pitch glide to the last note's pitch within a fixed amount of portamento time, the Pressure-weighted Portamento reacts to the pressure ratio between the two notes. The pitch will dynamically glide between the notes in real-time, always reacting to how the player distributes pressure between the two notes.

Controlled pitch slides, slow, expressive glissando, and subtle to dramatic vibrato effects are now immediately available at your fingertips! Pressure-weighted Portamento is like the ultimate powerful performance pitch wheel that doesn't even require a second hand to play it."

Ambient Modular Synth - Moog Subharmonicon, Mother 32

video by SyllixMusic

"Hello everyone! Today's video is another live ambient modular performance on the Moog Subharmonicon and Mother 32! I am really happy with the patch for this one. There's some nice pulse width modulation going on for both of the Subharmonicon's VCO's, as well as the Mother 32. They are all being modulated in a different way - details can be found in the patch notes on my Patreon.

As I continue learning more about this Moog eurorack system, I'm trying to come up with more creative ways to modulate sound, or to create generative sequences. I hope to eventually add a fully modular eurorack setup at some point! For now, I hope you can enjoy the more simple nature of the Moog synths :)

Flame - Chord Machine 2

video by SchneidersLaden

"Flame’s Chord Machine 2 comes equipped with a chord generator, an arpeggiator and a quantizer. The module generates tuned CV signals for up to five voices. You even don’t necessarily need an incoming CV to generate these output signals. You define a chord and an arpeggio based on internal note and tuning settings, these settings can be saved in lists that function as song lists or chord progressions, depending on how you use them. The arpeggiator output can alternatively be used as a very flexible quantizer. For a quantizer and chord generator module of this size it has a lot to offer. All in all, the module is very powerful, which also makes it complex – but it is worth taking the time exploring it!

The voices generated by the Chord Machine 2 can be spread over a range of eight octaves. 42 presets plus 16 user chords with up to four voices are available for musical experiments. Additionally, it is possible to choose between first, second and third inversion. All in all, musicians get access to 232 chords, which are playable within 54 preset and 15 user scales. Transpositions can be done via a CV input. The arpeggiator can run in several directions. The octave range is variable as well. Program and arpeggiator parameters are not only editable by hand, but can be modulated via a CV input as well. For synchronizing the module to other equipment, there is a clock input."

The first recording featuring Moog Synthesizer - The Zodiac: Cosmic Sounds (1967) ?

video by George Greene

Available on Amazon

"The Zodiac: Cosmic Sounds was a collaborative concept album on the theme of the signs of the Zodiac. It was issued by Elektra Records in May 1967 and featured early use of the Moog synthesizer by Paul Beaver, with music written by Mort Garson, words by Jacques Wilson, and narration by Cyrus Faryar. The Moog Modular synthseizer has a prominent role on the album. Rather than being limited to just spooky sounds, Beaver contributed a veritable clinic of fundamental Moog modulations, from soothing melodies and textures to sharply percussive interactions with the other session musicians. 'Must be played in the dark,' are the instructions printed in purple on the back of album cover. Although the Moog Synthesizer is not mentioned in the liner notes Paul Beaver is credited vaguely with 'electronic instruments'. This was not only the first commercial release of a record featuring the Moog but also the first to chart, spending a total of nine weeks on the Billboard album chart."

If you know of anything earlier, feel free to leave a comment. Surprised there is no mention of this release on Wikipedia's article on the Moog Synthesizer, but there is a separate article on the release here. Wikipedia also mentions use of the Moog on The Monkey's 1967 release of Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones Ltd, recorded April–October and released in November. The Zodiac was rleased in May of 1967.
