General Midi Battle - QY100 vs SC88VL vs Super Nintendo!?

video upload by Avrilcadabra

"Lets compare my Seashore track on these three midi modules.

Track 'Seashore' was written on the Dirtywave M8
The bank and program selects are set so it will work on any general midi device.

I have had this Roland SC88VL for a year or so and I use it fairly often as I don't have many poly synths and it doesn't take up much space. The QY100 is a recent addition. The super Midi pak I will feature more, it just got an update to work quietly on PAL machines.

Note seems between unplugging the audio cables from the qy100 and sc88 the Left and Right got flipped.

Midi pack is from https://www.supermidipak.com/

Phantasmal Force micro MIDI controller + Bastl Kastle Drum & 1010music lemondrop bells in locomotion

video upload by Arman Bohn

"Phantasmal Force micro MIDI controller with the @1010_music lemondrop and the @bastlinstruments Kastl drum. The Kastl kicks it off with a little loop (just started learning this little guy). The Phantasmal Force is sending chords to the lemondrop. The chords were generated randomly by the Phantasmal Force and I’m just noodling around with them. In chord mode, the knob raises or lowers the chord on the button up to one octave. Each button can send a different three note chord. The notes of the chord are adjustable, so you can make your own chords. Still working on tuning the randomness of the chords to sound more musical … #diy #synth #midicontroller #granularsynthesis #tinysynth #tinystudio #jamuary2023"

ANTONUS Custom 2600 + Little Brother Step Sequencer w/ Blue LEDs

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"Absolutely mint condition. This has only been touched by Antonus, myself [Bluetech] and Lisa Bella Donna. Why settle for cheaply made mass market synths "inspired" by the 2600 when you can get quality handmade real deal monster machine? Already in the states, avoid months long wait and customs and import duties and heavy shipping costs.

Made with custom Blue LEDs for that extra special sparkle.

Antonus 2600

The reinterpretation of the mythic ARP 2600 analog synthesizer. We have faithfully reproduced all aspects of the original electronic design so as not to lose a nuance of the mythical sound that characterizes it. We love its sound and behavior so we don’t intend to “improve it”. Of course, we wanted to adapt it to the current standards of use for which we have opted for a more compact format, without losing any of the feeling and comfort of the original design in addition to adding MIDI connectivity.

Step Brother

A unique sequencer design, the perfect mate of our modular system. Based on the design of the ARP Sequencer 1601 but expanded. We have added a Clock Divider, an ADSR, a VCO / LFO and 2 VCAs, and of course, MIDI connection. A sequencer system fully oriented for live performance and for immediate improvisation. Of course made with the classic 2600 design rules."

Polyend Play Pattern Generation with Roland J-6n Chord Synthesizer

video upload by Patchwerks

"In this video we're diving into pattern generation using the Polyend Play and the Roland J-6 synthesizer. These two tools are some of the fastest songwriting partners out there when it comes to music hardware. The Polyend Play stands out for its impressive fill and randomization features, making it a super fast pattern programmer. The Roland J-6 Chord Synthesizer, on the other hand, is known for its complex chord and arpeggiator generation capabilities. Together, these two synthesizers make for a powerful combination for creating unique and dynamic patterns. Stay tuned to see how we use them in action!

Long LFO to FM

video upload by Todd Barton

"This is a follow up to yesterday's tip on creating long cycling envelopes/LFOs with the Tiptop Buchla 281t and 257t [posted here]. What you are hearing is 1:40 of the turnaround of a 7'40" LFO going to open and close the FM of a 258t oscillator. On this video the pure tone happens at :37 and the FM returns at :55. If you want to hear the complete 7'40" go to my soundcloud:"

#Jamuary 01 - Ambient Performance with Vermona Perfourmer, Travelogue and Choreographs

video upload by Thoow

"Slow ambient piece, generated with the new Travelogue max for live device by Novelmusic. It creates four slightly changing Midi patterns and slowly morphs between them. The main voice comes from the Vermona Perfourmer MK2. Some recorded bits of the Midi play voices of the beautiful Choreographs by Slate + Ash. I use the Midique Kntrlr9 to adjust the volume of the tracks."

Doepfer Regelwerk SN 230576

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"Very cool device, has a multitude of MIDI and CV/gate outputs so you can control a vast amount of gear. 24 faders, 72 buttons, 8 CV outs, 8 gate outs (CV & gate only work in sequencer mode). As a MIDI sequencer you can have 8 simultaneous sequences going, each with its own CV/gate output.

Works perfectly, I just replaced the battery last year. FW 1.71 installed. I am the second owner but this has been used in non-smoking home studios only. Comes with generic 9V (center pos) power adapter. Guaranteed not DOA but due to its age and lack of current support it's sold as-is.

From the Doepfer website:

"REGELWERK is a professional tool that is able to generate any MIDI data by means of 24 high quality ALPS faders with 48 related buttons and LEDs (2 buttons and 2 LEDs for each fader).
The fader box features include standard functions like assignment of any MIDI data type to the faders and buttons (e.g. any controller, aftertouch, note on/off, velocity, program change, SysEx) as well as functions like Solo, Mute, Master, Total Recall, Overdup, HookOn. For example you may program the unit as a real-time editor for any other MIDI equipment (including software synthesizers) by assigning the required MIDI events to the faders and buttons.
But REGELWERK is much more than a so-called "MIDI fader box" though it as well carries out what you would expect from such a unit. In addition REGELWERK is suitable - so to speak as a free gift - to generate pattern-based musical structures like rhythmic trigger patterns, analog sequences and other rhythmic structures. The immediate access to important controlling parameters leads to completely new rhythmic and sequencing applications especially for improvisations and live events. It is possible to combine the features of the fader box and the sequencer at the same time (8 faders with fader box features and 16 faders for generating a sequence).

24 high quality faders (manufacturer: ALPS), 60 mm travel

72 buttons, 56 LEDs

2-line LC-display

rotary encoder for data input
19-inch rack-mount unit 5HU (suitable for rack mount or as desktop case)
dimensions: about 485 x 221 x 90 mm
weight: about 3 kg

2 separate MIDI Inputs, 2 separate MIDI Outputs, 5 pin SYNC socket (Roland compatible)
8 CV outputs (3.5 mm miniature jack sockets), function only in sequencer mode, range: 0...+5V, 1V/Octave

8 Gate outputs (3.5 mm miniature jack sockets), function only in sequencer mode
gate voltage: 0/+5V, normal logic (i.e. on = +5V, off = 0V)

Storage of all data via MIDI SysEx messages"

Vintage ARP Quartet 49-Key Analog Orchestral Synthesizer with retrigger mod

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

Demo video in the listing posted back in 2010 here. "ARP Quartet - beautiful sounding analog synth. The Quartet is exactly the same a the Siel Orchestra synth: ARP just licensed the design for the US market. It has "brass", "piano", "organ" and "strings" sections, and any two sounds can be combined together. The brass, organ and piano are cool and funky sounding, but this synth is ALL about the string section. Absolutely beautiful sounding chorused synth strings, in the same vein as a Solina string synth, but I actually think the Quartet strings are richer than the Solina. Everything works exactly as it should, all sliders and knobs work perfectly, all keys work as they should. There are two mods done: I replaced the flimsy and tricky-to-access "fine tune" knob with a trimmer pot. You can now set the fine tuning with a small flathead screwdriver using the trimpot. However, in the last several years, I've never needed to touch the tuning, once set it holds tune perfectly. The second and most important mod is a "re trigger off" switch to disable the voice re-triggering. Previous to this mod, if you were playing chords with a long release (which you'll want to do with the string section because it sounds awesome), and switched to another chord, you would hear the release cut off as you switched chords. With this mod, the release continues naturally after you change notes/chords, and you can get the beautiful long release on the string section that sounds fantastic. I don't know why they didn't design the synth like this, but now you have both options for re-trigger or re-trigger defeat. The ARP Quartet sound is all over the Portishead LP 'third'"

"Jungle Gardenia" - on Elka X-1000

"One of the lesser known instrumentals by Mike Oldfield. It was the B-side of his 'Crime of Passion' single from 1984 but I don't think it was on any albums except as a bonus track on later releases.

"Hi Everyone!

Recently I've finally could play with the newer version of the old beloved OP-1. This is just a quick soundcheck, recorded track by track in to Ableton, I've used very little EQ (cosmetics) and a limiter on the whole material. It is awesome for its size, I hope I can afford one in the future, as there's much more inside that you can see in the specs.

Enjoy and feel free to ask any questions!

Arturia JUP-8 V - Sound Bank '79

video upload by Polydata

"Drawing from the earliest days of polyphonic synthesizers, Sound Bank ‘79 for the Arturia JUP-8 V finds its inspiration in synthesizer music found in documentaries and library music from the late 70’s and early 80’s.

A bank comprising 40 patches for instant inspiration. The goal was to squeeze as much vintage analog juice out of this plug-in as possible, primarily working within the constraints of the original Roland Jupiter-8. I was honestly blown away by how good this plug-in can sound, and will definitely by using a lot more going forward.

Sound Bank '79 is a series of vintage tones for different synths and plug-ins, so look out for future releases. Recorded with no external processing - what you hear is all from the plug-in.
