"This is a first look at Scapeshift, a new Reaktor 6 ensemble from Tim Exile - it produces music & sounds generatively (ie: not AI), which you can control as little or much as you want. I'll introduce it, then I'll just jam it.

BTW - this is running on a Mac Mini M1 Late 2020 (the base power M1). The Reaktor CPU indicator is declaring 37% on this, it's quite intensive! I've only tried to run this standalone. Tim gave me a copy of Scapeshift to see what I thought, I decided to make this video to show you it. Tim's had a hell of a year with cancer, bereavement and bankruptcy following the end of the brilliant Endlesss.

Scapeshift is a generative groovebox and sequencer. I started building it in a hospital bed as a tool to soundtrack videos. I was documenting my recovery from major cancer surgery and I wanted a tool that would be fast and flexible and output ready-mixed music.

But I’ve ended up using it for way more than that. It’s become an inspiration machine that can take me all the way to a finished track. I’ve already written and released a full EP with it. Right now I’m listening to it in Wander mode, getting my mind melted as it weaves through continuous variations.

At its heart, it’s a machine designed for evolving, morphing and cross-pollinating rhythms, melodies and textures. The results can stand alone as finished tracks or be used to complement a production in your DAW or DAWless setup. Unlike your DAW, which reads out static sequence data, everything Scapeshift generates is controlled by continuously adjustable parameters. It can do some cool things your DAW can’t. You can morph continually between two completely different patterns, cross-breed multiple patterns or create themes to generate infinite variations on a style. It comes with 12 themes which get you started with one click. It can feel a bit like using AI, but unlike AI you can then precisely tweak the parameters of what it generates and make it your own. And it does all of this without using gigawatts of power and stolen data.

It’s got a full suite of sound engines: 5 drum synths, two monosynths, a polysynth, a resonator, a noise generator and FX. It’s also got a multiband mixing and mastering section so it outputs audio that’s ready to go wherever you want your music to go.

You’ll need a license for Native Instruments Reaktor to run Scapeshift without limitations. If you have Native Instruments’ Komplete bundle you will have this already. You can run Scapeshift in the free Reaktor Player but it will time out after 30 minutes and you won’t be able to save your work.

In terms of system requirements, the more recent your system the better. Scapeshift takes ~35% of a single core of my M2 Max Macbook Pro and ~70% of one core of my 2016 Intel Macbook Pro. A buffer size of at least 512 samples is recommended as Scapeshift does a lot of realtime event processing. This can cause clicks at lower buffer sizes. It’s recommended to run Scapeshift in Reaktor standalone. Most people have had success running it as a VST or AU plugin inside a DAW but some people have reported difficulties on older machines."

"Testing a beta version of the new Synthesis Technology E430 Morphing VCF. It's in a sense the filter from the Oberheim SEM except with added filter morphing controls not in the original. The thing sounds amazing. It's a morphing VCF in that it goes from low pass to bandpass to high pass at the turn of a knob (or via voltage control), or at the press of a button the knob changes to low pass to notch to high pass. That's a ton of flexibility, and you can use it to make all kinds of sounds. It also has voltage controllable resonance as well. I've basically rearranged my smaller modular keyboard case to give the E430 a permanent home there and moved my "regular" filter into an empty spot in the big case.

As well as extended parameters value range and MIDI Control Change for every parameter, there are some more waveform available for LFO1, DCO2 and a second LFO with 4 possible waveforms (this LFO is permanetly assigned to PWM and can be assigned to DCO pitch modulation instead of LFO1. The latter is always assigned to VCF modulation).
Other nice features are the possibilty to desactivate DCO1, MIDI synchronising the arpeggiator, random mode for the arpeggiator, the ability to use INC/DEC switches to select programs, 80 users programs (vs 64), MIDI OUT and THRU etc Nothing fancy in this video, just live editing the synth to showcase some of the new features."

"Model-Q-2 is a small complex system built on 10 algorithmic equations capable of infinite variable polyrhythmic pulses, 8 phase modulation oscillators, a DSP algorithmic matrix including app and gesture control, a chebyshev polynomial waveshaper of the 2nd kind and 6 external complex modulation sources.

The ModelQ2 app is designed to control all parameters of the hardware but also facilitates gesture control. Allowing variables to be assigned to the base of the palm, the thumb, the index finger and the middle finger. "Jan St.Werner of Mouse on Mars and Peter Blasser of Ciat-Lonbarde worked together on a very unusual synthesizer. Rather than creating lush textures, it is meant to excite and play acoustic spaces. Clicker compresses and expands a rich spectrum derived from 'Ringlers', a new take on Rob Hordijks 'Rungler'. Originally made for an exhibition it is now a standalone instrument. The whole concept intrigued me deeply, and as a fan of both their work I invited both of them to my studio for a chat. If found the resulting conversation so interesting I decided not to edit it down too much, only taking out the odd interruption. So strap in for an hour of deep synth, music and art nerdery."

"This is as good as a Jupiter 8 can get: it's been lightly used but spent much of its life in a case. Factory fresh shine on the orange paintwork, display cover etc. Sympathetically overhauled for flawless operation with Encore Midi. New buttons/felts (because the current owner wanted it as close to perfection as possible. Comes with flightcase (new in 2022) and original manual/brochures etc (English).

In astonishing condition with minimal wear to the face - it's not factory perfect but as close to mint as it's possible for a synth that's been carefully used can be. Light wear near some controls and keys are the only signs of use. Factory fresh glossy shine on the orange paintwork and stunningly clear display. The end cheeks have only minor scuffs and scratches. Exceptional in every way.

This is a rare opportunity. How often do you see a Roland Jupiter 8 for sale in stunning near mint condition with factory fresh shine to the paintwork? There can be very few (if any) others as good as this left out there.

"One of my all-time favorite C64 games with what IS my favorite C64 music on it. I've always wanted to remake this with some of my synths. Not a cover as such, but more a note for note remake, but with other sounds.
If this becomes a fairly popular video I might do more like this and I have bee thinking of an album with C64 themes recreated. It all depends on the popularity of the video really.
Doing this was great fun and a relaxing way of taking my mind off daily tasks and chores. Nothing more.

"Here we have the new Cycle 5 Eurorack oscillator from Joranalogue. It's relatively small at 6HP but as Joranalogue say "it packs a punch." It's a highly stable and precise device for tuning with the mid fine tune position giving the note C (this has been bang on my testing in a couple of cases) and has octave and fifth tuning switches, 2x v/oct inputs (so you don't need external precision adders) and on board variable waveform morphing."

"It can be your standard basic go to VCO both to use in your patches and as a reference to tune everything else to. It has an octave switch that is both a performance tool as well as just damn useful in the studio.

The video is a bit longwinded, which usually seems to be the case with my videos lately, but I think I covered all the basics (and a bit more). Should I cut out the live patching next time?"
