Fred's Lab Manatee Custom Patches by synth_nyc

via synth_nyc:

I’m pleased to inform you that Fred’s Lab released my 128 Manatee Custom Patches [Bank 1] + [Bank 2] today; they are available for purchase on Fred’s Lab new web-store: https://fredslab.net/shop/shop-front.php

You can listen to them in high resolution (24bit 96kHz PCM WAV masters, FLAC encoded) on my site (optimized for Chrome on MacOS and Windows): https://synthnyc.com/index.php/freds-lab/

Here is a short description of the sound banks by Fred’s Lab:

[Bank 1]
Crafted by synth_nyc, this bank features 64x meticulously hand-designed presets in sysex format. Taking full advantage of the advanced spectral oscillator and unique synthesis options, it is perfectly designed for atmospheres, pads and keys sounds. This bank also provides a solid set of basses, plucks, bells ... but also arpeggiated sounds with a retro / nostalgic vibe. Provided sounds have an emphasis on expressiveness, they all make great use of velocity & aftertouch controls.

[Bank 2]
As an extension of [Bank 1], [Bank 2] shifts towards classic hybrid and early digital synth sounds, featuring timbres reminiscent of wavetable and FM-based synthesizers. Still, a wide variety of presets are offered, this bank complements [Bank 1] perfectly.

Background Modulars No.10 Buchla200 & DX5

video upload by Memetune Studio

"Don’t have a real Buchla 200 (cloned) and Yamaha DX5 to hand? No worries! Just put this video on in the background (in full-screen mode), and have the next best thing 😁

Here is 10 minutes of self-playing modular synthesiser randomness. Why not put it on loop - then you can have it bubbling away in the background while you do other things

A note on the patch: The DX5 is being triggered and pitched from the Buchla 200 modules (mostly a 280 in cycle mode and 262 Source of Uncertainty, plus some MARF) using a Kenton CV to MIDI Converter. The DX5 is programmed to make a percussive drum-like sound using six operators. The DX5 audio signal then goes back into Buchla modules - mainly the 277 and 288 Delays, which are being fed back on themselves to create the bowed-string-like sounds. The Dodeca module provides mixing, random panning and reverb. The SOU sends random voltages to the 280 so it cycles irregularly. The whole patch has a cybersynthetic nature because it is always on the edge of going chaotic with the feedback to the delays, but it keeps itself under control by injecting new DX5 sounds into the path just in time to settle it back down before it happens again"

"Through Hills From Sky" synth jam w 0-Coast, Starlab, Arbhar, OB-X8, DFAM, Hydrasynth, Keystep Pro

video upload by Tim Grogan

"Live recorded DAWless synth jam into Pro Tools for mixing purposes only. I wanted to do some music that felt uplifting at a time that I know is emotionally draining and challenging right now, especially for those of us in the U.S. who don't belong to the political cult that's currently in existence.
'Through Hills From Sky' is really meant as a way of saying we'll get through this if we keep our heads up and stay positive, focused on a bigger picture."

Disintegration of Voice into Water Drops

video upload by Element433 (a.k.a. Pere Villez)

"The Elementary Signal Engine is used to create the illusion of vocal disintegration into water drops and back. FOF synthesis was first created by Xavier Rodet in 1978 and though there has been some tentative implementations of FOF virtual none (outside Csound) have incorporated powerful features such as octaviation, jitter, formant bandwidth and FOFlet duration (all demonstrated here).

At the Mountains of Madness (Lovecraft) on The Elementary Signal Engine

video upload by Element433 (a.k.a. Pere Villez)

"At The Mountain of Madness" inspired by the Lovecraft novel. Composed and played on my old 2014 clunky app "The Elementary Signal Engine" thinking of reviving it and creating a PD/Plug Data version" now that machines are much faster. I have the core part restored and starting to optimise it."

Of cyclotrons and sequencers: recreating a 1974 “probability controller” in Eurorack

video upload by Electrum Modular

"This is the first video in a new series exploring the University of Iowa’s Electronic Music Studio. In addition to presenting its historic instruments (including a 1968 Moog IIIP with custom-made modules), and the famous musicians who have used them, these videos will extrapolate ideas to use in your own modular systems. This episode examines a unique random sequencer that was developed in 1974 by Paul Dingman, an electrical engineering student at Iowa. It then shows how it might be recreated using the third lane ('time') on Make Noise’s 0-Ctrl. NOTE: several other Eurorack sequencers also have this feature, as indeed does the Moog’s own 960 sequential controller; alternatively, use an LFO to clock any sequencer and patch the sequencer’s second lane/channel (if it has one) back into that LFO’s frequency input.

Electronica w/ monome norns shield, grid, Prophet-10 | Factitious Fever 2025-03-26 by atnr

video upload by atnr

"A piece created using the Prophet‑10, monome norns shield, and grid. It’s a session built around repeating synth harmonies and non‑repeating melodies.

On the Prophet‑10, I play a slow‑attack synth pad mixed with noise oscillators.

On the Norns Shield, I launch the “sines” engine and perform via Grid, routing the output through ‪@ChaseBlissAudio‬ MOOD MK II and ‪@gfisys‬ SPECULAR TEMPUS. I adjust the MOOD MK II’s CLOCK parameter to change the pitch of the sines.

The drums are constructed in the DAW by editing recorded sounds and layering samples.'

ATARI ST "The Intelligent Sequencer REALTIME" Recording – JAPAN Visions of China

video upload by plantssystem

"This is a rare recording of The Intelligent Sequencer REALTIME by Eric Ameres, a real-time MIDI sequencer for the ATARI ST. In this video, the sequencer is used to play Visions of China by the British band JAPAN.

As the name suggests, The Intelligent Sequencer REALTIME allows real-time recording and editing of MIDI sequences, making it a unique tool among ATARI ST music production software. This video captures MIDI data input, playback, and editing, providing a glimpse into the music production environment of that era.

For those interested in ATARI ST MIDI sequencers or vintage music production, this is a must-watch. Enjoy!"

Update:

"The sound is played using the SoundFont function of the ATARI ST emulator hataroid. The SoundFont is based on the Roland SC-55, and the drums are custom made by sampling the live sounds of the parts myself. hataroid can also control external synths using MIDI."

Using the DB-01 arp to write sequences

video upload by Richard DeHove

"Jamming with the DB-01s arp is loads of fun; commiting that to a sequence is not quite as amusing. Here I go through a simple method to capture the moment. Better yet, have your arp permanently recording in loop mode and grab those otherwise unrepeatable riffs that can suddenly materialize from nothing. Guest stars: the Boss GEB-7 EQ and Darkglass B3K.

And at the end, some more fun with the arp as it pushes around a Korg Multi/Poly.

MFB Dominion 1 & Vermona DSR 3 Dual Spring Reverb (no talking)

video upload by DreamsOfWires

"Some example sounds using the Dominion 1 with the DSR-3 for reverb. Support my music at https://tomorrowthecure.bandcamp.com.

MFB Dominion 1: Created by the late Manfred Fricke, this 3-oscillator monophonic synth was discontinued a few years ago. It has a huge feature set - multimode filter, 3 LFO's, 3 envelopes, preset memory, patch points for Eurorack modular etc, a ring mod, arpeggiator, sequencer... it's a beastie. I'm currently selling mine, and other gear, as I need to raise money to help fund a short live performance at Superbooth25 this year.

‪@vermonagear‬ DSR-3: This beautiful stereo, real spring reverb is still currently available. It has the richness and character of an analogue spring reverb, but with enought clarity to make it a viable global reverb on an effects send/aux, especially when used in stereo. It can also be used as two independent mono reverbs, or chained together to make a more cavernous spring reverb. I'll be using this on an some upcoming Bandcamp release, and more videos here, and on the @AJHSynthOfficial channel."

"KORG Mono-Poly & Kovari Midipoly retrofit 372767 Original Korg Mono/Poly with Kovari MIDI retrofit - specifications available online New baseboard and custom plywood side panels Very tidy - camera shows every speck of dust Front panel Excellent All pots clean and noise free Voices fully functioning but will require calibration to ensure optimal output

DESCRIPTION: I acquired this fully functioning MonoPoly some years ago, but the case was in terrible condition. I cut a new baseboard from MDF, and then cut and installed new marine grade plywood side panels. The front panel is in great condition, but there is a slight defect on the mod wheel assembly panel as per the condition I acquired. All pots are noise free, as are the outputs. She sounds amazing in Poly Unison mode, but the individual voices do drift a little. She would benefit from a comprehensive voice calibration, but I don't have the instruments required to do so. Once she is fully calibrated, she will sound even more awesome. She comes with the Kovari MIDI retrofit, which allows her to integrate in to any modern MIDI studio. Very sorry to see her go, but I just don't have the space for my full hardware studio any more."

Sometimes you try something so inspiring that you have to record everything you can from it, as fast as you can. SKETCHES FOR MY SWEETHEART THE DRONE is a collection of songs all recorded live within a 48-hour period.

For all songs, it's the same hardware setup: the FORGE TME Vhikk X (our titular drone) with Teenage Engineering OP-XY (drums, bass, and synth). The goal was to keep the songs simple, hypnotic, and most of the synth parts are played live over simple drum and bass sequences.

The end result is (I hope) a simmering background album, perfect for your work, emails, reading, or otherwise living your life. Thanks for listening."

Analogue Solutions TC5000 Synthesizer: "Drenched Sweeper" Sequence No. 301

video upload by Analogue Solutions

"Here’s a new sequence, 'Drenched Sweeper' from the Analogue Solutions #TC5000 Patch Pin Matrix Synthesizer—recorded with no external instrumentation, FX, or processing.

With the TC5000’s vast sonic range, no single video can fully showcase its capabilities. We’ll share more sequences to highlight different aspects of its sound design potential.

About the Patch:

The TC5000's pin matrix provides extensive routing options, allowing for highly intricate and dynamic patches. A single pin can introduce subtle nuances or completely transform the sound.

In fact, the complexity of just one patch could warrant an entire essay!

This sequence features multiple waveforms from 3 oscillators, 2 filter types, Dual EG module 5012, Sequencer, and the Preset Voltage module 5052 (randomized with noise), along with the Mix-Sequencer module 5100 (providing the pulsating effect) -- this module is essentially two 4-input mixers. The channels, however, can be muted/switched on/off in the sequencer, in time to either an internal or external clock."

BugBrand Introduces the Weevil 20/25

video upload by BugBrand

"A new Weevil to celebrate 20 years of BugBrand - the first regular production since 2015 and perhaps the first 'cased' version since around 2008!

Thanks to everyone who sent in pics of their old Weevils!"

via BugBrand

"I'm excited to present the new Weevil to mark 20 years of BugBrand and Weevils - it's the first regular production since the 2015 BoardWeevil and, I think, the first 'cased' design since 2008! Quite a change from the old cigar boxes of the early days ;)

The main listing for the 20/25 is here - I'm doing a run of 50 for now, which will be built up in batches of 10 over the coming months. The 2nd batch should appear in early April.

The overview video features a load of pics of old Weevils after the callout last time -- thanks so much to everyone who sent in pics & memories, it meant a lot to me 💚💚💚

Next week I'll do another mailout to mark the actual 20 years - stay tuned!

All best! Tom"

"Weevils were the first designs I made as BugBrand and, between 2005 & 2015 I made a whole slew of them – you can see some on the Weevil Archive page. So it seemed apt to make a special one to mark 20 years – the first regular production for 10 years and the first ‘housed’ one since perhaps 2008!

The core is a simple little circuit I found in a library book – a cymbal sound synthesiser made of some CMOS 4000 series logic gates to make squarewaves that are quasi-ringmodulated together. Back in my early days I was doing a lot of circuit bending, so I tried out adding power starvation and body contacts and discovered a deep & chaotic sonic world. This Weevil Heart has stayed pretty constant over the years while I’ve played extensively both with the surrounding circuitry and how to present an instrument. For example, the STEIM Cracklebox was always an inspiration as an almost acousitc electronic instrument that had to be played in a truly experimental manner. It has really been a case of iterative refinement and the developments nicely highlight how my build techniques have evolved.

The 20/25 Weevil is really quite similar to the last BoardWeevil of 2015 – we’ve got the 3 Oscillators, 2 RingMods and State-Variable Filter – but I wanted something cased so took the existing modular boxes and fashioned a new PCB frontpanel with accompanying side-cheeks that could hold a speaker, battery box and line output. Smart!

For further details, have a read of the Instruction Sheet & refer to the Block Diagram – but really the best way to learn is to dive in and experiment!"
