ARP Foundation Uncovers Never Before Seen Images of Lexington, MA ARP Instruments

"Every once in a while, history hands you a surprise.

A couple of years ago, we came across three contact sheets of never-before-seen photographs from inside the Lexington, MA ARP Instruments — images (with the exception of one) that have never been published, never been digitized, and until now, never even been known to exist.

We don't yet know everything they show. What we do know is that they're a direct window into the now-legendary 1970s factory that includes images of Alan R. Pearlman, David Friend, and Phil Dodds — the team that gave us the ARP 2600, the Odyssey, the Omni, and the ProDGX. For anyone who's ever chased that ARP sound, these images are a missing piece of the story.

The Foundation has an opportunity to acquire all of the images from these contact sheets — but only with your help. Acquiring and preserving them is part of our 'Preserve the Legacy' goal in our current Back-to-School Fundraiser, alongside our effort to save a vintage ARP string ensemble."

This time I also brought Virus synth sounds into the track, adding a deeper psychedelic character to the mix. 🌀

Roland S-1 takes a special role in the transitions, creating wild evolving effects and sequences, while Digitakt II and Digitone drive the groove, bass and melodic layers.

The Birth of Roland Kayn's Cybernetics

"Between 1966 and 1969 Roland Kayn made three pieces at the Studio di Fonologia at RAI in Milan entitled 'Cybernetics I/II/III'. These pieces were Kayn's first attempts at realizing his concepts of cybernetics using electronics and are a fascinating hint at what is to come later in his career as these ideas get fleshed out even further.

In this video we look at the background of these pieces and walk through the techniques Kayn used for 'Cybernetics III' which more or less involve an automated mixing machine to combine pre-recorded concrete sounds and then cybernetic regulators to influence and make decisions about how the piece evolves.

"In this demo, we take ourselves back to the early 2000s, when supersaws and rolling trance basslines dominated the dance floor 💿🪩🎶

The Redshift 6 handles all the synth duties at the same time, using its incredibly powerful Demon Core Oscillators and multitimbrality.

The multitimbral patch has five parts:
Part 1: Supersaw Pad
Part 2: Main Lead
Part 3: Stereo Unison Bass
Part 4: SQR Wave Melody
Part 5: Paraphonic Pad

The parts are sequenced from the DAW, and the audio is recorded using the Redshift 6’s individual outputs.

The bassline is recorded dry from AUX 1, while all other synth parts are recorded from the Main Out through the Redshift 6’s internal FX.
There are no external FX on the synth parts."

"Vice Operators is a Miami Vice and Jan Hammer-inspired instrumental from my new album, Each Machine a Voice.

The track combines the Korg opsix and modwave, Uno Drum and a couple of other synths to create an atmospheric 1980s-style soundtrack featuring digital textures, sequences and expressive lead sounds. This video is a full performance of the track using the synths behind the music.

Each Machine a Voice explores the different character that every synthesizer brings to a piece of music. Some tracks focus on one particular machine, while others combine several synths as an ensemble.

No talking, no tutorial: just AUM, a drum loop, and GlitchShredder chewing through it. I load the effect, run through some presets, and play with the Chopper, Decimator and Stutter Sync controls to show what the engine does to a simple beat.

GlitchShredder is a zero-crossing chopper with a probabilistic glitch engine. It slices the incoming signal into segments and reassembles them in a different order, backwards, at the wrong speed, or completely at random — from subtle rhythmic artifacts to total deconstruction of the source.
