NAMM: Our First NAMM Teaser of the Year Comes from Casio

Click on the bottom two pics and zoom in. Some things to take from the images:

1. Four Assignable knobs

2. Two rows with LEVEL labels

3. First LEVEL Row: (my guess) SYNTH1, SYNTH2, PCM1, PCM2, ???, ???, ??? New Section with ASSIGN1, ASSIGN2?

4. Second LEVEL Row: (my guess) LAYER1, LAYER2, LAYER3, LAYER4, LAYER5, LAYER6, New Section with ASSIGN1, ASSIGN2?

5. Below the LEVEL sections appear to be numbers and/or letters? Maybe tempo settings?

6. There is another section to the right of the knob controller section with buttons.

7. Note what looks like a KORG MS20, laptop and mixer on the table of the concert image. The image along with "The Beginning of a New Era" implies a new audience and new market for Casio.

What do you think?

Update: the two bottom shots joined together and blown up a little:

If you are on a Mac and try to do a screen grab with Command Shift 4 and select the whole image, you will see it brighten up, and you can see some of the additional controls on the far right. I captured a MATRIXSYNTH ghost in there BTW. I really need to invest in Photoshop.

Update: and a new teaser pic spotted on ComputerMusicGuide

Update 1/19/12: Details are in:

Click each pic for the super size shot.  Details on each section below.

STEP SEQUENCER

Providing everything from pulsing dance grooves to animated synth textures and arpeggios, the Step Sequencer in both the XW-P1 and XW-G1 is the first of its kind. With nine tracks for drums, basses, synths and chordal parts, four controller tracks for adding panning, filter changes and other animation to existing parts and eight patterns make up each sequence; the user can build and mix their performance on the fly. Sequences can even transpose live from the keyboard, providing a completely interactive experience.

DRAWBAR ORGAN

In addition to the solo synth and HexLayers, the XW-P1 performance synthesizer is armed with an arsenal of gig ready sounds like stereo pianos, vintage electric pianos, strings, brass, guitars, basses, drums and more. It also has a new drawbar organ mode. Utilizing the nine sliders on the XW-P1 you have full range control over each drawbar. The XW-P1 even has dedicated controls for key percussion and rotary speaker while also providing vibrato, distortion and more for the ultimate drawbar organ experience.

SOLO SYNTH

Utilizing Casio’s exclusive (HPSS) Hybrid Processing Sound Source, a six oscillator monophonic solo synth is just one of the amazing sound engines in both the XW-P1 and XW-G1. The solo synth has the power to deliver classic analog sounds and sounds with an aggressive edge unlike anything else. Two virtual analog style oscillators, two PCM based oscillators, a noise oscillator and an external oscillator via mic and line inputs can be combined to make up a single solo synth tone. Each oscillator has an independent filter, envelopes, independent key tracking, portamento, two LFO’s and access to master resonant filter. With impressive modulation and control capabilities at your fingertips, the solo synth is capable of a wide range of sounds and expression.

HEXLAYER

In addition to the solo synth, the XW-P1 also features HexLayer tones. A HexLayer is a single sound comprised of up to 6 components, allowing complex layers, splits and velocity switched sounds. The sliders on the XW-P1 can be used to mix sounds on the fly to create evolving pads and rich synth textures while key velocity can be used to create dynamic velocity switched orchestral sounds and more.

ARPEGGIATOR AND PHRASE SEQUENCER

The XW-P1 and XW-G1 both have powerful Arpeggiators. In addition to typical arpeggio patterns, this Arpeggiator can create polyphonic synth gated patterns, acoustic instrument emulations and is even fully programmable allowing you to create your own unique sounds. An additional phrase sequencer allows you to quickly capture any riff that you play on the keyboard and have it available on a front panel switch or triggered and transposed live from a range of notes on the keyboard. The combination of the Step Sequencer, Arpeggiator and Phrase Sequencer provides an endless array of sound possibilities.

CONTROL

The XW-P1 and XW-G1 have 4 real- time controller knobs, pitch bend and modulation wheels, along with 9 sliders to provide control over internal sounds and external devices. Through standard MIDI ports and with a class-compliant USB port the keyboard can be used as a controller for other instruments, including computer software and iPad® based software applications. It also includes an audio input allowing you to monitor an MP3 player, computer or other device without the need for a mixer.

"NEW YEAR, NEW ERA, NEW PROFESSIONAL SYNTHESIZERS INTRODUCED BY CASIO

Synthesizers built with Innovative and Interactive Features for Performing and Recording Musicians

ANAHEIM, CA, January 19, 2012 —Casio America, Inc. and its parent company Casio Computer, Ltd. today unveiled two new professional Synthesizers. Casio's roots were cultivated from the CZ-series synthesizers over 25 years ago. Recognizing that today’s professional musician wants more, Casio has re-entered the professional synthesizer market with two products which are the ideal tools for performing and recording artists. The XW-P1 is a 61 key performance synthesizer with Casio’s exclusive (HPSS) Hybrid Processing Sound Source. Providing screaming virtual analog monophonic leads and basses, drawbar organs, complex layers, stereo pianos, drums and more, the XW-P1 has the sounds and real-time control the performing musician needs. While the XW-G1 groove synthesizer is designed for the DJ and club performer providing an interactive step sequencer and a sample looper for digitally capturing performance patterns and external instruments. Both will be on display at the 2012 Winter NAMM Show, beginning today through January 22nd at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, California, booth # 5900, Hall B.

“The XW series are not just new keyboards, they represent a new direction for Casio in the musical instrument business” said Mike Martin, general manager of Casio’s Electronic Musical Instrument Division. “Casio’s formula of value and quality that has been the foundation of award winning instruments like Privia has been applied to a new product category, and the XW-P1 and XW-G1 are just the beginning.”

A six oscillator monophonic solo synth is just one of the amazing sound engines in both the XW-P1 and XW-G1.

“The solo synth has an incredibly deep and powerful design. Among countless others, the oscillators even have access to waveforms from Casio’s original CZ synthesizers. It can create a variety of classic analog sounds, but also has the power to deliver sounds with an aggressive edge” said Mike Martin. “Everyone is going to be surprised by the expressiveness and range of sounds the solo synth can create, but that is just one aspect of these products.”

In addition to the solo synth the XW-P1 performance synthesizer is armed with an arsenal of gig ready sounds like stereo pianos, vintage electric pianos, strings, brass, guitars, basses, drums and more. It also has a new drawbar organ mode providing nine steps for each drawbar, vibrato, percussion and rotary speaker control. Rounding out the XW-P1’s sound-set are HexLayer; a HexLayer is a single sound comprised of 6 components, allowing complex layers, splits and velocity switched sounds.

The XW-G1 groove synthesizer is geared for the club DJ and dance music performer. In addition to 420 built-in sounds, solo synth and PCM based sounds, the XW-G1 also has the ability to sample. A 19-second sample looper captures internal sounds as well as external instruments allowing the performer to create layers and overdub sounds on the fly. Sampled sounds can even be saved in Flash ROM so they remain in memory after the keyboard has been powered off.

Furthermore, both the XW-P1 and XW-G1 have 4 real-time controller knobs, pitch bend and modulation wheels, along with 9 sliders to provide control over internal sounds and external devices. Through standard MIDI ports and with a class-compliant USB port the keyboard can be used as a controller for other instruments, including computer software and iPad® based software applications. It also includes an audio input allowing you to monitor an MP3 player, computer or other device without the need for a mixer.

The XW-P1 will be available in March 2012 for an MSRP of $699.00 and the XW-G1 will be available in April 2012 for an MSRP of $799.00.

Schopfung

Published on May 15, 2013 RADIOKLOW·85 videos

"Schopfung is a collective work of electroacoustic music and video I conceived with the students of Philosophy and Electronic Music Workshop I created and have been supervising for two years in Lycée Edouard Herriot of Lyon. This work explores the question of natural and artistic beauty through music and image ans is based on a famous meditation of Hegel about this problem in his Aesthetics."

Some additional details including the synths used throughout the piece via Marc-Henri:

"As it vas programed, the students and I presented our work during a performance monday evening at 17h30 at the theatre of our High School (Lycée Edouard Herriot, in the city of Lyon).

We divided the performance in various pats : a first piece of music and video you will find here, a first live improvised set, a second video and music piece (Hadikat Raja XXI you already know because the students thought it fitted with our theme) and a last short improvised set. The live sets will be presented apart un a single video.

Here is the collective work of music and video by which we began.

Is is called Schopfung (Creation) un reference to Haydn's oratorio, Die Schopfung,(The Creation). Our them was the question of natural and artistic beauty after the mediations of Hegel about it in his Aesthetics. The idea of a link between this philosophical program and the concept of creation was suggested to us by fabulous recordings of electromagnetic waves from the solar system planets achieved by Voyager I and II during the seventies.

We used natural recorded sounds, various synths, and voices of two student girls members of the group.

Here is the approximative timetable of our various sound and music tracks. (All sounds except the natural sounds and the girls voices and the Bulgarian voices of Voices of Passion by Eastwest ,are original creations of the various instruments - when a sound, natural of coming out a synth or a natural voice is treated by the GRM Tools, I always give this precision)

I send you my best friendly regards,
Marc-Henri

0:30-4:50 : A deep bass group of sounds which are recordings of electromagnetic waves by Voyager I and II

Little Phatty : 01:28-01:50, 03:53-04:20 : ring like sounds

01-31-2:20 and 3:49-04:00 : PPG Wave 2V software of the Waldorf suite

02:26-03:48 : Filtatron of Moog various sounds including sparkle and rings like sounds

Eplex7 DSP releases Replikorp 2249 plug-in instrument for Win / Mac

Published on Jan 13, 2020 Eplex7 DSP

Update: new demo video:

Eplex7 DSP Replikorp 2249 VSTi / AU plug-in retro futuristic instrument with sci-fi analog sounds

"Eplex7 has released Replikorp 2249 plug-in, futuristic sci-fi instrument with vintage analog / early-digital sounds, modular analog sounds, experimental, atmospheric sounds, pads, textures, FXs, soundscapes with vintage dirt and analog dust / noise but with futuristic atmosphere.

This retro futuristic plug-in instrument is compatible with MAC & Windows / VSTi / AU / Mac VST, x32 / x64bit.

The sounds are perfect for Cinematic Film music / Video Game music, various styles of electronic music: (Intros / Outros for various styles of music, Psytrance, Psycore, Hitech, Darkpsy / Forest, Drum & Bass, Techno, EBM, Industrial, Electro, Witch house, Hardcore, Neurofunk, Synthwave, Retrowave,) to Ambient, Science fiction, Horror music, Experimental and more.

In 1981 one insane, but very talented amateur musician from USSR with ability to see future had a dream. The dream of future in year 2249. People stopped working with hands, almost all work was done by automation, robots. People worked just with their brains, most of economy was moved to weird computer network (later called internet) and digital services because nature was damaged by factory overproduction, global heating and so. Difference between rich and poor people was bigger and bigger, rich people afraid of going outside because of smog, waste, radiation from exploded power plants and gangs of poor criminals. While most of human work was automated, it wasn’t possible to fully automate some kind of jobs, rich people needed assistants, babysitters and serious workers. Intelligent people were extremely lazy and poor people didn’t have skills to do precise work. After year 2220, after approval by the corrupt government, leading genetic company started producing real human clones/assistants which were sold to rich families and companies. These clones had modified DNA, but were still human slaves. Richest people wanted to escape from this dark world full of contaminated nature, smog, waste, unhealthy food produced in laboratory and poor anarchists in streets, they dreamed of colonizing Mars, but after many unsuccessful attempts government stopped this expensive project. This was dark, but realistic night dream / prophecy of musician and clairvoyant Alexander. When Alexander woke up, he was dazed. This dream was disaster. The only way to deal with it was to start making musical story to warn civilization. Firstly he started writing storyboard and preparing sounds for his futuristic soundtrack. He was very talented and innovative amateur music producer, electronic engineer developing first computers in his daily job. He created sounds, samples and presets for this soundtrack with analog modular synthesizers, early digital fm synths and his own computer algorithms which were fully futuristic at that time, he used analog tapes and first 12 bit recorders to record his sounds. He was totally obsessed with making this soundtrack, he understood his music as a mission for humanity. After few weeks he quit his daily job to fully focus on music production and writing storyboard (had problems with government because it was illegal to be unemployed in USSR). But one day he get lost...Nobody don’t know where…maybe it was KGB secret police because his ideas and opinions were dangerous for USSR, or he was closed at psychiatric hospital. After few decades his daughter found tapes and diskettes with his sounds/samples. She sold them to us, we remastered it and bringing you this weird combination of vintage and futuristic madness!

Yamaha Reface CP and CS Demo Test Videos by TheSynthFreq

Published on Dec 7, 2015 TheSynthFreq

"HI!

After some time since creating our last videos here on youtube, we have returned to show some amazing new Yamaha synths. The Yamaha Reface CP and the Yamaha Reface CS. Here at our studio we just love these synths for what they can do. I will be creating new videos often showing the details of these synths, the sounds, modifiers and everything about the keyed and other features present in these synths.

After seeing the Yamaha Reface synths for the first time in September at KnobCon held by STG sound labs, we just couldn't put these synths down. In fact at the convention we kept visiting the Yamaha booth and playing these Reface synths and visiting with Yamaha about their new product. After playing these synths for the first time, my mind was changed on what the exterior of the synths said, and let the synth's sounds do the talking!

If you like what you see here, the Yamaha Reface synths (CS,CP,YS,DX) can be found at www.yamahasynth.com

if you like portable synths with a great sound and features, these new synths are just the keys to meet the need!

Please enjoy!

"test video 2 Yamaha CP and CS demo video improvisation.
Yamaha Reface 80s improvisation.
Here at our studio we have been working with the new Yamaha CP and CS synthesizers and working on incorporating these new synths into our composition style. So far we have been very pleased with these new synths and really have been impressed with how flexible these synths sounds are and how many endless options for sound creation there really is with the seemingly small number of options at first glance. The sounds are really well created with these synths and I think we will keep these synths around for a while. :)
Great work Yamaha!

please enjoy the 80s vibe!

Berlin, January 24, 2019 – Following its biggest ever release in September 2018, Native Instruments today announces four new easy-to-use, affordable, and powerful products. Included are two new KOMPLETE audio interfaces, the most portable KOMPLETE KONTROL keyboard to date, a new free tier of the KOMPLETE production suite, and a new generation of the TRAKTOR DJ app. These new products are accompanied by a refresh of Sounds.com, the expansion of Native Kontrol Standard (NKS) to include loops and samples, and tighter integration of Sounds.com with updated MASCHINE and KOMPLETE KONTROL software – further integrating NI’s connected ecosystem of creative tools into one seamless workflow.

Interview with Hexfix93 of VAC

The following is an interview I just wrapped up with hexfix93 of Velvet Acid Christ. As you know, this site is about the gear, namely synths, and the gear that helps drive and enhance synths, but ultimately the focus is on synths.

I was chatting a bit with hexfix93 and asked him if he would be interested in a slightly different take on an interview, one focused on synths and their impact to his world. We all have our story regarding how our obsession with synths first started, how we see and approach synths and what they mean to us. I thought it would be interesting to hear his story. The following is the interview.

Before it begins, I want to thank hexfix93 for taking the time out for this. We all have a different approach and a different story when it comes to our synths. This is his. For more of his music check out VAC and don't miss Toxic Coma. Cheers, matrix.

1. What was your first synthesizer, how old were you when you picked it up, and why did you pick it up?

"It was some kind of old yamaha cheap thing. i got it for my atari st, so when i played games like leisure suit larry that the music wouldn't come from the wimpy fm built in sound, but a general midi synth instead. it really didn't sound all that great. i wasn’t really a keyboard player at this point.

The first synth i got as a keyboard player was a roland w30 sampler workstation. And we made like 3 records with that keyboard. i remember gary slaughter an x vac member, spilled orange vodka drink on it. and i had to take it apart and clean every part of it by hand slowly, it took weeks. it was a pure nightmare.
