Yamaha CS01-II Synthesizer Demo

YouTube via peahix.

peahix on MySpace

"All the sounds (drums too) are from my old monophonic Yamaha CS01-II, which I had retrofitted with CV/Gate jacks and plugged into a Kenton Pro Solo midi/cv box. I bounced each part from midi to audio one by one in Cubase, mixed with some effects. Maybe I'll develop this into a complete song someday, for now it was just a quick experiment to see what a full arrangement using the CS01-II would sound like.

You can download a Kontakt program of a bass sound I made with this synth here: http://www.twango.com/media/peahix.pu..."

Electro-Harmonix Mini-Synthesizer Analog Synth

YouTube via peahix.

peahix on MySpace

"i haven't seen any demos of the eh mini synth on youtube, so i thought it high time to put one up here. this thing is kind of like the edp wasp, though not quite as versatile. obviously i'm just noodling around, but this will give you a basic idea of some of the sounds this thing makes. pretty limited, but what it does do, it does quite well. also, you can get an idea of how the velocity sensitivity works on this thing.

as a bonus, you can download a very detailed kontakt program of a big bass patch that i made with this synth by going here: http://www.twango.com/media/peahix.pu...

for those interested, the controls are:

top row sliders l-r:
-pitch bend
-sub octave
-phase rate
-sweep start freq
-sweep stop freq
-sweep rate
-master volume

bottom row switches:
-octave
-tune (recessed trim pot)
-phase
-sens.
-2x filt.
-q
-power

btw, the "phase rate" slider acts as a pwm lfo rate when the "phase" switch is in the up position, and acts as a continuously variable pulse waveform when the "phase" switch is in the down position."

Never enough...

Modcan Modular - 24A Boolean Logic Module and Other Early Modules

via this set of auctions. (there are more early modules listed)
Update: images of other modules saved here for posterity.

Pictured:
"Modcan 24a Boolean Logic module.

This is an A series unit with stackable banana jacks like Serge. This is an early (possible prototype) Modcan unit and was purchased new from them. It has been in a smoke free studio ever since.

This unit has a unique color scheme which was built to my specifications by Bruce at Modcan. To my knowledge, no one else has ever had this done. The color scheme:
Audio Inputs: Green
Audio Outputs: Blue
Control Voltage Inputs: Yellow
Control Voltage Outputs: Red
Gate Inputs: White
Gate Outputs: Gray
This color scheme makes it visually easier to patch the Modcan modules!"
Hmm... I'm not seeing the colors being referred to.

Some sort of drum brain?

Anyone know what this is? I saw it on this VSE thread via Tyler2000.

Update via the thread:
"That's a JL Cooper Sound Chest II. I bought one at a GC tent sale back in the early 90's. Supposedly you could load it with EPROMS from Obie DX, LinnDrum & Simmons. I had a set of DX chips I put in mine. I was hoping to find a dead LinnDrum and rob the chips, but gave up on it. I sold mine on the 'bay around '01 or '02 along with a bunch of other stuff that was not getting used. I think I kept the instructions. I'll have to look in my 'file.'"

Electric Light Orchestra's Daybeaker.. by me.

"Here I perform a track from ELO's vintage era, their album 'On The Third Day' of 1973, ish. Unlike my previous videos where the sequence was programmed some years ago for ELO tribute 'Wishful Thinking' (long before You Tube) this has been progammed especially for the You Tube audience.

The keyboards in the shot are (top down); just in shot top, right, Korg MicroKorg vocoder which isn't actually used in this piece (but will come in handy when I do my next piece 'Prologue' from Time), Korg DW8000 used for the main triplets riff (with a sequenced harpsichord underneath), Korg M1 (more synths, strings, guitar sounds), then the mighty Roland RD300 for the piano parts. On the left there is a Roland DR660 drum machine (not used) sitting atop a Korg 05R/W which does most of the drums, strings and bass guitar.

Once again I've used Windows Movie Maker to make this video (which I am rapidly outgrowing, great for beginers but lacks polish), but in answer to some critisism I have limited the angles and gone for a pretty much contigeous performance, just one angle change near the end as the cross-arms coda could not be seen on angle 1. So there.

I hope you enjoy my rendition of one of Jeff Lynne's early works from when ELO was more prog than rock, as usual you are all welcome to leave comments and/or video responses - please also visit my website www.paultrappett.co.uk for more recordings and rantings."

Still can´t get enough? There is room for more: Four more plug-ins will be available for optional online purchase at nice prices.

The Plugiator box provides MIDI In and Thru connections, USB, a microphone input, stereo line outs and a headphone output. It will have its debut at NAMM in January (Hall E Booth 1204), and will be available with dealers from February 2008.

PAiA “2-Transistor Ribbon Kit”

"We're going to show you how to make the world's most bare-bones electronic music instrument – and a bunch of other things, as well.

This instrument is called a 'ribbon controller', but it's also known after its inventor, Paul Tanner, as a 'tannerin'. He called this instrument an 'Electro-Theremin'. That name didn't catch on because this is not a Theremin (the musical instrument you control by moving your hands in the air) even though it sounds like one. You are going to build a sound generator that changes pitch as you slide wires back and forth on a conductive “ribbon” we will make as part of this project..

We also discuss how you can take this same circuit and do many other experiments with things you have around your home.

Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys' song “Good Vibrations” used the magic of Paul Tanner's ribbon controller to make its distinctive sweeping wee-oo-wee sound. Wikipedia has a great page on the history of the ribbon controller"

Picutured: Johnny Greenwood and his Analog Systems French Connection and Modular. The French Connection is based on the Ondes Martenot.

Recuerdos de la Alhambra played on a French Connection

The above features the French Connection by Stretta (previously posted)

"After watching the Jean Laurendeau Ondes Martenot video on youtube, I was inspired to seek out an Analogue Systems French Connection controller. It so happens that I came across a used unit, so I jumped on it. I received it two days ago and I was eager (perhaps too eager) to contribute a demo of my new toy to youtube. Yes, my intonation is questionable. My apologies.

All the music was generated exclusively with a (primarily Doepfer) modular synthesizer, one monophonic line at a time. This exercise is somewhat of a test balloon for a long form modular project I'm currently sketching out.

Correction: the original piece is Recuerdos de la Alhambra by Francisco Tárrega"

Useless but Interesting Bit of Trivia

Note the placement of the names Dave Smith and RogerLinn in the top two renderings for the LinnDrum II Analog. The third shot is the LinnDrum II Digital (minus the analog engine from Dave Smith). The top image is the official from the DSI website. The bottom two are from this post.

Update: In case it wasn't clear, what is interesting about this is that the names Roger Linn and Dave Smith are swapped in the two images of the Analog version. Same version of the synth with the the names in different order. The top has Roger Linn's name first and the second has Dave Smith's name first. My guess is they decided to go with Roger Linn's name first as that is what is on the DSI site.

Metamorphoses

[Switched-on special] Various Artists - Metamorphoses. Electronic Interpretations of Classic and Modern Musical Works (Melodya, 1980)

"Take a regular switched-on xxxx record like Wendy Carlos' Switched-on Bach, play it on an EMS Synthi 100, and you'll get this lost diamond of Russian electronic music, and possibly one of the rarest "switched on" records ever made.

Since the Synthi 100 is perhaps the most versatile synthesizer ever build (at least that's what Karlheinz Stockhausen once said) and given the lack of recordings with it (I remember Stockhausen's Sirius, some early Rolf Gehlhaar stuff and Bruno Spoerri's Toy Planet) this record might also appeal to the vintage gear fetishists."
