Synton Syrinx
images via this auction
"The Synton Syrinx is one of the few analog synths to come out of the Netherlands. It's a monophonic lead synth in the same category as the Minimoog, Arp Odyssey, and Roland SH-7. But the Syrinx is pretty rare, only a few hundred were produced from 1983 through 1984.
Description
Pre-MIDI monophonic analog synthesizer with two oscillators, hard- and soft sync, pulse-width modulation, sub-oscillator, ring modulation, noise source, two LFOs, two ADSR envelopes, formant filter, two parallel bandpass filters with separate resonance controls, 44-note keyboard, and unusual pitchbender. A few keyboardless Syrinxes were manufactured during the 1990s.
Produced
May 1982 to 1984.
Approximate Number Manufactured
325 to 350.
Manufacturer
Synton, Breukelen, Holland (no longer doing business).
Insider Information
Synton founder Felix Visser was inspired to design synthesizers after purchasing an EMS Synthi-A that stopped functioning three days after he’d brought it home from London. In the process of repairing it, he analyzed the Synthi-A’s circuitry and thought he could do better. He started Synton in 1973 to materialize his concept of a voltage-controlled synth. . . . Visser was a jazz drummer who began experimenting with electronic music during the late ’60s. He owns an extensive collection of vintage electronic gear and is in the process of opening a museum called the Elektryseum in Holland.
Original Retail Price
$1,095.
Current Value
$4,000 to $6,000."

PolÃssonos from Rui Penha on Vimeo.
"PolÃssonos is a loop-based midi sequencer that elicits the relation between the rhythmical division of time and the shapes of polygons. It was developed in September 2007, for the month of "Music + Mathematics", in October 2007, at Casa da Música. A simple midi sequencer at its core, PolÃssonos is mainly a proposal for a loop orientated alternative to the traditional “piano roll” interface. PolÃssonos was awarded with an honorable mention at Lomus 2008 - International Music Software Contest."

Casio Rapman RAP-1 Sample Kit
Samples, pics and thoughts on The Midi Mechanics Showroom"The Casio Rapman is probably the most bizarre of all Casio toy keyboards from the 80s and 90s. The RAP-1 is the first of the two Rap-themed keyboards from the big 'C' and was released in 1991...
The two main features of this fun little machine are the neat pseudo-vocoder effect and the surprisingly good drums. You can either trigger kick, snare and cowbell yourself with little orange rubber-pads or play 25 pre-programmed rhythms and create wacky breaks with a scratchweel. Some of those beats even come with a funky bassline and sound like they were pulled from some lost "Prince of Bel Air" soundtrack or a never released Vanilla Ice comeback album... Wouldn't it be nice to have those sounds on your MPC or Machinedrum or load them in Battery?"

Brood and the HFT modular

via John Hughes of BROOD
"We're building a site for HFT right now and I'll be able to send you some nice pictures once we get that together. Here's a few shots from an interview with my friend and designer, Jonas Banker, who designed custom panels to bridge the different format modules together (and allow for shorter patching).... The HFT modular synth is the modular synth at the studio, HFT."
"Brood is the collaborative project of Chicago's John Hughes and Pompeii's Lino Monaco and Nicola Buono (both of Retina.IT). The single was recorded in the late summer of 2007 at Hughes' HFT Studio while cicadas screamed from the trees across the street. The cicada's mass hatching coincided with the birth of this new project and inspired the single track, Brood XIII. The material for this and the upcoming full-length was recorded almost entirely using the HFT analog modular synth."

(Also want to note that the end of this episode actually happened the way you hear it -- I did not overdub any sound effect and it really did happen as it appears on-camera)

Oberheim OB-8
"equipped with factory MIDI and has the page 2 silk-screened on the front panel. It has an elaborate modulation routing configuration, especially with the "page 2" options which gives you a full additional set of parameters like an envelope (invertable!)for the lfo..speed and/or depth delay, just to name two! It has an extra LFO on the bend panel, also with many features: 6 waves from which to choose- up saw, down saw, square, S/H, noise, and triangle. Route to OSC 1, OSC 2, or both, and again, completely independent of the front panel LFO, which is probably already doing its own modulations on PW, FILTER, VCOs, and VCA.
THE ARPEGGIATOR (!) was way ahead of its time with the ability to program the intervals at which it can arpeggiate: DOWN, UP, UP/DOWN, and RANDOM. Yes, you do not have to rely on the $4000+ Jupiter 8 for the same (if not better)random arpeggiator ! It's hidden from the functions silk-screened on the bend panel, as are the programmable intervals, etc... Right now, it's programmed to arpeggiate octaves, (same as Jupiter 8's RANGE). It Sounds amazing and is the OB-8's best kept secret.
The OB-8 has 16 VCOs, 8 VCFs with 2 modes, and 16 VCA/EGs."

Vermona DRM1 MKII Analog Drum Synthesizer
images via this auction"The DRM1 MKII is an eight-channel, completely analog drum synthesizer. It gives you total control over every parameter through its 72 controls.
Each channel features specific parameters for generating a certain kind of drum and/or percussive sound. They are divided into:
- three DRUM channels
- one MULTI channel
- one SNARE channel
- two HI HAT / CYMBAL channels
- one CLAP channel
In addition to the main stereo output, every channel is also equipped with an individual output / insert jack, which allows you to insert external effects.
Each channel has its own output/insert jack on the front panel. The rear panel features the master output (L/R), as well as the MIDI IN and THRU jacks. The DRM1 MKII has an integrated power supply.
The design and construction of the chassis makes it possible to use the DRM1 MKII either in a 19" rack (5U) or as a tabletop unit with the front panel tilted on a convenient angle.
The DRM1 MKII can be triggered via MIDI - MIDI channel and note number can be freely assigned."

Doepfer VCF as Spectral Gate from Ben Cameron on Vimeo.
"This video demonstrates the 24db and LP of the multi-mode filter being triggered by fast ADSRs to use them as spectral gates of sorts rather than routing the VCO sine waves through the VCA. It also demonstrates the S&H being used as a random note length modulator by varying the filter frequency of one of the 2 filters used."
