MOON8 - Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon, Chiptune Style
MOON8 4 of 6 - Money
video upload by Sakanakao
Full album below.
"http://rainwarrior.thenoos.net/music/... [mp3s]
Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon arranged for NES by Brad Smith. Created using Famitracker, sound rendered with NSFplug."
Playlist:
via Retro Thing
Update via cw8cka in the comments: "Pink Floyd’s quintessential 1973 album, Dark Side of the Moon, has been a perpetual presence on record sales charts even since its release. A recent chiptune album, created by software programmer Brad Smith, takes a fresh look at the classic and capitalizes on its huge popularity, while succeeding in bringing something new to the table.
Chiptune, for those not familiar with the genre, is a form of electronic music in which music is created in a way emulating the production of music on early 8-bit video game systems such as the Nintendo NES. Composers are limited to the use of a square sound wave and only three oscillators. Despite these limitations, many chiptune albums have shown, especially Smith’s Moon8.
Smith spent nearly two years working on Moon8 in his spare time using the popular chiptune software, FamiTracker. He originally undertook the project for the amusement of a friend, and presented it at a small party. He then uploaded the work to Youtube, with no video other than a still frame depicting the original Dark Side of the Moon cover re-imagined in an 8-bit art style. Despite the lack of visual interest or marketing, the videos are on their way to viral success. In one short month, most of the Youtube videos already boast over a third of a million views.
Moon8 is a loving recreation of its source material, very rarely deviating from the original. The guitar voices, dynamic shaping, echoing vocal lines, and sliding pitch shifts present in the original songs are all executed with near perfection. Unlike many chiptune works, the album is completely listenable. I had no trouble sitting down for 45 minutes with my headphones on and playing the duration of the album. There were no headaches, and no uncontrollable urges to tear out and eat my own hair. Many chiptune composers could learn a lot from Smith’s style.
The moments in which it seems most impossible for Smith to recreate Pink Floyd’s work are the moments in which his work shines the most. Two of the most popular songs on the original album feature the heavy use of sound effects: Time, and Money. Certain effects in the sound collages that open these tracks are obviously impossible to render on the NES, but Smith reacts brilliantly. A sonically detailed effect of coins jangling together is represented instead by its comically simplified Super Mario equivalent. This nod to the video game background of the chiptune genre is cute and entirely appropriate. The cacophony of acoustic sounds from antique clocks that opens Time would also impossible to recreate on the NES. The listener is instead greeted with an equivalent cacophony of sounds resembling the alarm functions digital watches, cheap digital alarm clocks, and cellphones.
Moon8 is available for free download in a variety of formats on Smith’s website, http://rainwarrior.thenoos.net/music/moon8.html. The mp3 version consists of only two files, one corresponding to each side of the album’s original vinyl release, a move the speaks greatly to Smith’s great respect for the work he has made his own. Moon8 stands as a tremendous tribute to Pink Floyd, rather than the satirical mockery we can easily imagine it as."

ENSONIQ MIRAGE
YouTube via TheDaydreamSound
"The Mirage was Ensoinq's first sampler and their fist product made in 1984. It had 8 note polyphony, an analog filter and a realtime sequencer that captured anything that played once you hit record. Hitting stop/cancel determined your end point just like a tape recorder. The editing for the Mirage is in HEX code. This way you had could access 256 values from a 2 digit display eg. (00 - FF in Hex = 0-256 in the decimal system)
What's really exciting about the Mirage is that it is an 8 Bit sampler capable of sampling anywhere between 10Khz and 33Khz.
3 Banks of samples and 8 sequences cand be saved on 1 Floppy DSDD disk.
1 Bank can contain up to 16 samples whch are spread across a keyboard. (8 samples on lower half of the keyboard and 8 on the upper half)
This model has 1 mono input and 1 mono output but some models have stereo outputs.

Everything was played by hand and recorded in realtime. Sadly, this machine cannot produce anything that sounds like drums, therefore the demonstration has no drum track.
Im planning to sell this synthesizer, because I own a KORG Trident that is more appealing to me. Anyone interested in buying the Lambda? Send me a mail! Just go to my website to find the mail address.

CMOS DRUMS Pt.1
YouTube via wonkythomas
"Messing around with a few new modules. Most of the sounds are the MFB Drum 02 - super simple, 5 drums made out of CMOS inverters; sounds so good.
Controlling everything is my new Divider / Sequencer (bottom left) which divdes the main clock, also using the 4ms RCD (out of shot) to trigger stuff. I don't have much logic at the moment so I'm using a few differant methods to combine gates / triggers.
1 drum is controlled by two gates being processed by the Phase Comparator inside the Doepfer A-196 PLL. Some gates are combined in the A-172 Min/Max, some more in a 3P polarizing mixer. I also have an A-167 Comparator in the mix, the sum voltage fed into the min/max & the gate out controls the direction of the sequencer; you can see it toggling back & forward between the last 2 & first 2 steps (green LEDs)
One of the things that I love about VC is once you have all these processed highs & lows flying about, you can take a voltage & feed that back into the main clock... I think it was the Min. voltage from the min/max.... the CV output of the 196 PLL is in there as well somewhere, as well as a random voltage from the MFB Dual LFO controlling the Decay time of the "synth" sound that comes in...
The MFB modules have plain silver panels... because of the board mounted sockets on them I have to replace the whole panel when I convert to banana format.
All the drum sounds are processed by the Toppobrillo Triple Wave Folder; for extra wood!"
CMOS DRUMS Pt.2
"More fiddlin'
Half way thru I start messing with the comparator settings which ripples out thru the logic chain & alters the patterns... there's abit of luck involved in getting stuff locked in, doesn't always work & its pretty easy to F*! everything up by messing around too much... not to self; ALWAYS RECORD!!!!!!!!!"

"This circuit is a crossbreed of the concept of an Analog Shift Register and a CGS Sequential Switch.
Basically it is a 4 stage sequencer. If the pots are labelled ABCD, the outputs will emit voltages in the patterns of ABCD, BCDA, CDAB, DABC and in the reverse direction; DCBA, CBAD, BADC, ADCB.
This means you can have a 4 stage ditty driving one VCO and the exact reverse of that ditty running another, or the reverse staggered by one clock pulse...or two clock pulses....etc.
Just to suck it dry, there are inverse outputs available too, and I couldn't let the extra stages of the 4024 chip be idle, they are connected to a R2R ladder to give a staircase output (and its inverse)."

Modified Yamaha DX-100 Mini FM Synthesizer
YouTube via rolandsh1000
"The DX-100 is a fun, little, fully-programmable FM synthesizer. It's probably most famous as the synth that Roger Troutman of Zapp used for a lot of his talkboxing (he originally used a minimoog). If you search Youtube, you'll find a lot of videos that demo the talkbox capabilities of the DX-100.
This modification isn't a talkbox, but enables a capability that used to be dedicated to the breath control input. On the big brother of the DX-100, the DX-7, you could route the mod wheel to the EG BIAS of various operators. This would allow you to selectively control the relative amplitude of a modulation operator with the mod wheel. Depending upon the algorithm you had set up and the relative frequencies of the carrier and modulation operators, this could give you filter sweeping effects similar to those found on analog synthesizers by rotating the mod wheel.
On the DX-100, the mod wheel can only apply relative amount of LFO to various operators. Only the breath control input can do EG BIAS!?! I thought that sucked, so I changed it. (I actually play with windcontrollers and I think breath control is amazingly expressive for synthesizers, but sometimes you just want to use your hands.)
So, on this DX-100, I added a switch that can route the voltage on the mod wheel to either the mod wheel analog input of the main microprocessor (stock performance) OR the signal from the breath controller jack of the DX-100. This mod I think is acceptable, because (1) I'll bet 99% of the breath control jacks on the existing DX-100's out there have never been used; (2) most people playing with the DX-100 are probably using their mouth to talkbox anyway.
Ignore my lame playing in this video - it's just a demo of the capability."

AngryOctopus Webotron Updated With Input from Monotron Designer

Some notes on the Monotron:
- filter doesn’t sound nearly as aggressive at maximum peak.
- LFO is slower at minimum (about 15s period) and faster at maximum (>1kHz).
- monotron resets the LFO at the moment the ribbon is touched, so it
works like a simple cycling EG at slow LFO rates.
- monotron has fixed intensity keytrack. cutoff tracks ribbon position
by factor of two. only tracks ribbon not pitch knob.
follow-up to this post. Remember you can search on Monotron here to find all posts mentioning the new device, including videos, details, comments, pics and more.

This synth has midi & comes with the original manuals, plus a Kaces gig bag which has normal wear. Sounds & plays like a dream, so much warmer than virtual analog."

x0xb0x by x0x Source
via these auctions
"The x0xb0x is an analog replica of the legendary Roland TB-303 synthesizer. It uses the same components, in the same schematic, to match its sound — perfectly.
The reasons that we [the seller] think make x0x Source the biggest and most trusted supplier of fully assembled, tested, and warrantied x0xb0xes are:
* Experience and quality -- We've already assembled and shipped dozens of x0xen. We use computer-aided testing and calibration, together with careful A/B listening tests to guarantee each x0x.
* Solid return policy and warranty -- Full refund within 30 days. Comprehensive warranty on parts, labor, and two-way shipping for three years.
* Honesty and communication -- All questions answered in one day. If there is ever a problem or delay, we bite the bullet and tell the truth.
* Fast delivery -- Next-day shipping via EMS. Delivery to most European countries takes one week (including customs).
* Reputation -- We really can't say much more than our customers. Their cumulative rating of our x0xes (known as "Item as described") is 5.0 out of 5.0.
For those who have more interest in creating music rather than electronics, buying an assembled x0xb0x makes sense. The x0xb0xes we sell are assembled with experience. Moreover, they are tested thoroughly. The analog section is carefully compared to a reference machine in A/B listening tests, to guard even against flaws that change the character of the sound only subtly — flaws which may slip unnoticed without reference testing. Finally, the x0xb0xes are tuned using a high-end oscilloscope. The tuning is aided by high-precision trimpots that are ten-fold more precise than the ones bundled in the official kit."

"The AX-60 is among some of the last true analog polysynths of the mid-eighties. The AX-60 is a programmable six-voice synth with a nice LFO, lowpass VCF filter, envelope sections, and more. An eight-voice version, the AX-80, was already available.
Programming this synth is easy using dedicated sliders, knobs and/or buttons for its parameters. It also has a useful noise generator and some other cool functions that include auto-tuning, chorus, a multi-mode arpeggiator and a keyboard that can be split into two key-zones, making it somewhat bi-timbral. All six voices can be stacked in unison mode for a powerful and thick lead sound.
* Polyphony - 6 Voices
* Oscillators - 6 VCOs
* Memory - 64 Patches
* Filter - Lowpass analog filter
* VCA - Standard ADSR
* Keyboard - 61 keys
* Arpeg/Seq - Arpeggiator
* Control - MIDI (2 parts)"
