Urei 565T Little Dipper Demo.m4v

YouTube via FlakeStick | February 02, 2010 | - new video below

"This is a quick demo of the Little Dipper audio filter. Recording straight to MacBook audio in through an Alesis Multimix 8 mixer. No other eq or effects were added. The synthesizer is a Roland Jupiter 6 (off camera) which already has a robust filter of its own. The 565T has a very gentle high and low pass curve while the notch filters are in the on position. It's the dual notch/peak filters that can really transform the sound going in. Exciting phaser effects start to happen when the notch frequencies approach each other. You can read articles online how it was designed for filtering out very isolated frequencies when no other piece of kit will do....but there's nothing like transforming your favorite instruments into something different. Definitely share any tips and tricks with me as I would love to try them "

Oberheim Matrix-6: Superbad Muchacho

YouTube via FlakeStick | July 20, 2010 | - video re-uploaded below.

"This is an un-rehearsed demo featuring the sounds of the Oberheim Matrix-6. The Matrix-6 has 6-voice polyphony and is capable of splits, aftertouch sensitive, programmable benders and 100 patches. Getting the most out of programming the Matrix-6 isn't for you lazy folk out there in need of instant gratifications, but a little bit of finger-effort on insane-membrane buttons will produce rewards beyond your wildest fantasy. Well, maybe not THAT cool, but pretty cool um-kay? The Matrix-6 is capable of many of the sonic mayhem of its big brothers the Xpander and Matrix-12. Patch programming can be done via MIDI on your favorite DAW platform. I have Cubase SX3 but never got around to mapping the parameters to the Matrix. Because you know what? Programming from the front panel isn't difficult at all so I don't know what all the fuss is about. You CAN program both benders and TWO pedals to control any parameter in the modulation matrix and store that on a PER PATCH basis. Anyway, this recording doesn't make use of any effects except for the very last song - but used some reverb judiciously in that instance. I slopped this thing together in a couple of hours so take it easy with the comments. Actually nevermind that - say whatever you muchachos want - I'm good for it. :)"

"PipeKeys HD" and "PipeKeysB HD" - Uilleann Pipes Keyboards for the iPad

YouTube via tradlessons | February 09, 2011 |

"PipeKeys HD is an expressive, authentic sounding concert pitch 3/4 set of Uilleann pipes chanter, drones, and two regulators in the form of a standard two octave piano keyboard.

PipeKeysB HD is the same, but three half-steps lower in the key of B and has a mellower sound.

The range of the chanter is from D4 to B5.

Touch the drone puck image to switch the drones on and off.

Play the regulator chords on the top and bottom halves of the lowest two notes (C and C#) on the keyboard.

For a bigger drone sound, you may enable an optional stereo flanging effect for the drones on the settings page. This is particularly effective in headphones.

Finger vibrato, as is done on the real instrument, can be added by sliding back and forth along the length of the chanter keys. The note C has an extended pitch bend range as typically used when playing a real chanter.

You can even play along with the music on your iPad by playing the track and then launching PipeKeysHD.

Adjust the volumes using the sliders.

The sounds are recorded from my personal set of Uilleann pipes and are of extremely high quality."

Waldorf's Intro on the Black Blofelds

"Deep in the subterranean Waldorf Laboratories, our scientists have finally discovered the finish that delivers the best sound. We almost had forgot about them when they resurfaced and proudly presented the result of their almost endless struggle to find the ideal material: Neither Mauve nor Lavender nor Ochre result in optimal sound, but a special electron absorbing coating in deep black.

The explanation is simple: more absorbed electrons reach the inner digital and analog workings of Blofeld and cause each bit to be stronger pronounced, resulting in a very defined and detailed sound. This makes our new Black Blofeld sound even better than before.

The new black Blofeld is produced 100% in German Schwarzarbeit and is available only on the black market."

New Steiner Synthasystem Complete!

via Analogue Realities:

"I pronounce the Synthasystem fully resurrected. The last module was the Ring Modulator. Nyle spent a couple of hours with me today and it works. I can now make the order for a small production run of the last three PCBs. The panels are done and now I'm going to build my modules.

I'll update the web pages over the next few days and get the module information up to date."

For those that haven't been following, Nyle Steiner is behind this. He has been working with David of Analogue Realities to bring the Steiner Synthasystem back to life. Note this is not a one off restoration. These are new modules initially available for order as DIY kits. Last I checked in with David, eurorack would be coming. A new Steiner Synthasystem modular has just made it into being. See the links above for more info and the label below for posts featuring Nyle Steiner's work.

Inside the Korg Monotron

YouTube via shobley | December 24, 2010 |

I recently acquired a Korg Monotron - a tiny monophonic synthesizer featuring the same filter as found on the MS-20 (not the MKS-20 as I said in the video) synth.

I would guess that this is Korg's attempt to capture a share of the lucrative Stylophone market...

In this video I was able to take a look under the hood and tap into some of the control points to see what was going on...

(Apologies for the crappy focus, Flip cameras might be HD but they have no macro mode)"

Can the laser harp be topped...?

YouTube via shobley | January 23, 2011 |

I get asked about once a month if I can make a MIDI interface for the Theremin. So after completing the vacuum tube Theremin I thought it was about time I built one.

This device accurately matches Theremin Pitch to MIDI note, along with volume data - using a cunning blend of microprocessor, signal-processing hardware and some clever embedded software.

So far I've tested it with a PAIA Theremax, a Moog Etherwave Plus and my own Keppinger VT Theremin.

Not only does it produce pitch information, it can provide controller data, and realtime arpeggiation using simplified or complex chords - read from a MIDI keyboard connected to the input.

It even blends subtle pitch bend control into the MIDI stream to allow user controlled vibrato to be added. Just like a real Theremin.

Since enough people asked about it - I've put together a complete package here :

Beta test - Sequencer Pseudo Synth Voice

YouTube via bchris1776 | February 08, 2011 |

"The idea is to make this as few parts count as possible - while still having a useful synth voice for a 'Baby Ten' type sequencer. It has a 2 Voice VCO (squarish wave) simple VCA, Simple EG and filter.
I eliminated a couple pots - and added a few more passive components from the first test vid. It's a bit tamer now than it was - but still will surprise you with some unruly behavior.

Parts count for the voice/EG/VCA & Filter - 33 passives, 2 IC's & 5 pots.
Controls are Filter resonance, Filter Cutoff, EG Attack, EG Decay, and VCO#2 frequency."
