Spectralis tutorial and demonstration: Machinedrum-like parameter locks
Published on Nov 7, 2012 by acemonvw

"Elektron products get a lot of buzz for having this unique 'parameter lock' mechanism, whereby certain parameters can be locked into place at any given step. I thought I would go through and show that this can be done with the spectralis as well (albeit, not as straightforward, but with more potential). I tried to make this as much of a tutorial as well as a demonstration of the capabilities of the spectralis.

In this video, I used only one oscillator (out of 4), one bass drum sample, one snare sample, and some filterbank sequencerlines. All of this could be easily done using the Spectralis mk1, as well as the mk2.

Need to create the drum sound? Follow the instructions at the website below, and route sound to the MM filter (instead of bypassing filters):
http://www.forum.radikaltechnologies.com/viewtopic.php?t=1228

I did not add any compressors, filters, or modify the sound in any way. The sum out was used and went directly into my soundcard, and into garageband. The final mix was done using iMovie. The camera used was the GR-HD1, in HD.

Please feel free to ask any questions, hopefully this was a helpful demonstration. I apologize in advance for how quickly some of my comments pass by, but you can pause it at any time, as well as ask me what I did.

The Chase

Published on Dec 15, 2012 by attorks

"Two weeks ago I bought a Moog Prodigy in pretty good shape. Since then I have cleaned the keys, key contacts and switches, I sanded and repainted the wooden parts, replaced the power elco's, drilled two holes to add CG/Gate-in jack busses and made the connection to the printboard and I tuned the VCO's. I may replace the trimpots for tuning with multiturn trimpots because tuning is very fiddly now and I don't know if the current trimpots are reliable. Anyway, after tuning the Prodigy and connecting it to the Q960 sequence I came up with this improvisation. So that's the reason you see the guts of the Prodigy. The Prodigy bass is very fat, perhaps a bit more fatter then what I can get out of the Modular. I very much like the basic approach of the Prodigy and the yet the variety of sounds you can get out of it.

The music starts with an 8-step sequence coming from row 3 of the Synthesizers.com Q960 driving the Moog Prodigy. After that an 8-step sequence from row 1 of the Q960 is driving the Synthesizers.com Modular. Percussive blips from the Waldorf Q Keyboard are added which are arpeggiated sounds synced with the MIDI clock from the Doepfer MAQ16/3. Then another 8-step sequence from row 2 of the Doepfer MAQ16/3 is added to drive the self-built Modular. Chords are played on the Roland XP-80 which MIDI-out is connected to the Oberheim OB-Mx so you hear a combination of 2 sounds when I play the XP-80 keyboard. The solo is performed on the Clavia Nord Lead 1. Anne used my iPhone 4 to film this video.

You can download/see/hear the video and music from my website soon."

If you've seen Battlestar Galactica you've heard this vocoder as the voice of the Cylons. An amazing sounding analog vocoder, perhaps the most intelligible ones out there of the Moog / Bode / Sennheiser VSM201 / Roland VP330 SVC-350 / Korg VC10. It just has a very nice tone to it, and most important you can really hear what you're saying without working too hard at it. In mint shape and fully functional. Looks fantastic. I've tried almost all of the ones out there, and if there was one go-to vocoder to use, this one would be it. See pictures below for more details. Don't miss out on this awesome classic!.."

Hideaway Studio S-VX Hybrid Library for Kontakt Featuring Novachord & More

"Complex Analog Oscillators with 12-bit Crunch into Curtis Filters…

For a while now I've been curious about the infamous AKAI S900 into VX90 combo and after building a 13 pin connection cable and installing an HxC virtual floppy drive in the S900 I decided to give it a go.

The results were very promising so I decided to put a new sample library together offering complex warm analog oscillator sources transposed over 5 octaves with a touch of 12-bit crunch shaped with classic Curtis VCFs and VCAs!

Raw complex oscillator sources were sampled in 12-bits on a recently refurbished AKAI S900. Sources were mainly 1976 Minimoog model D but also included ARP Omni-2, Philicorda GM751, 1939 Novachord, Juno-106 and three tube oscillators fed into a tube waveshaper.

32 complex oscillators were captured on the S900 and stored as virtual disk images on SD card.

Patches were programmed into the VX90 to modulate the Curtis filters and VCAs and the results multi-sampled as a library of 376 generously long 24-bit samples.

32 instruments were programmed up in Kontakt to form the basis for a 4-voice layering engine complete with scripted user interface.

32 example editable patches were created.

Here is a link to more background, sound demos and download page for what I think you will all find is a very tempting Christmas offer of £10:

"The AX73 is a surprisingly good analog synthesizer that is still considered to be widely underrated and deserving of some recognition. It's a six voice analog synthesizer with an almost identical architecture to Akai's AX60 keyboard. It also came in a rack-mount form as the VX90. It has one oscillator (VCO) per voice and allows for 3 playing modes: Poly mode uses one VCO per voice for six voice polyphonic pads, chords and strings. Dual-VCO mode stacks 2 VCOs per voice for a thicker three-voice sound. Unison mode stacks all six VCOs onto one monophonic voice for a screamin' lead!..."

George Harrison - "Electronic Sound" - Composed on Moog Modular

George Harrison - Electronic Sound (Complete Album).wmv

Published on Mar 4, 2012 by LouiePlaysDrums
You can find the release on Amazonand eBay.

"Here's the complete 'Electronic Sound' album by George Harrison. This album was among the first to be entirely recorded using a Moog Synthesizer which was still a relatively new instrument at the time (1969). George would later introduce the Moog to his fellow Beatle bandmates and they would wind up using it on their immortal 'Abbey Road' album (particularly on the tracks 'Here Comes The Sun', 'Maxwell's Silver Hammer', 'Because' and 'I Want You (She's So Heavy)').
When it comes to the early synth pioneers, one would not think of Beatle George as being one of them but this album proves otherwise. This was actually way ahead of its time when it was first released.

Vintage Buchla at University of Victoria, BC Canada

This one in via Grant

"This device, in the pics (Al from BB), cost UVic $100,000 to build or procure (not sure how it got there) but it’s in the UVic school of music control room."

Update: Grant wrote back to say the $100k was guess, and according to Rick in the comments it didn't cost that much. You do have to wonder how much this system would go for.

Update via sealion in the comments: "I borrowed this for a music be-in performance a few years ago which we did to mark the death of Bob Moog. It is one of three such units bought at Don Buchla's famous garage sale when he moved his production in San Francisco. UVIC music prof and Tibetan chanting aficionado Martin Bartlett drove down in his VW microbus and bought three units from Don, that one, one for SFU and I believe a missing third one. It is still in use today. Cost may have been about $6,000 (total guess) and I know a decade ago a standing offer of $20,000 from a dealer in LA was regularly turned down. A technician said due to age tuning was an issue for some. I bought the surplus cv/trig op-8 to dcb to a midi box setup that they used with it long ago.
At that time the department was doing a lot of Electronotes building, serge kits, biofeedback as cv and trigger experiments. Back then I attended a performance in the Department of David Rosenbloom's pathbreaking On Being Invisible performance which involved handmade circuit boards controlled by an IMSAI kit made thing called a computer, programmed using toggle switches for each line of code. It read output from body sensors that monitored his brainwaves, pulse and muscle's electrical activity. He sat Buddha yoga style and barely moved to control the performance. The last time I saw Martin before his death was at a stoplight. I looked over and saw him leaning back from his VW wheel jaw and mouth shaped to do that deep Tibetan bass note drone with overtones thing he left electronics for, at the light by Mayfair and Denny's."

Update via Rick: "i restored this system in 2010.. its fully functional now and sounds wonderful"

everything is being generated real-time on my mattson modular's three oscillators and a noise generator (albeit all through relatively primitive, simple patches... i probably spent too much time wrestling with the sound sync on this video and too little time actually making an interesting patch hah!)

PS sorry about repeatedly cutting the sequencer off at the top of the frame!"
