Analog Style - Gangnam Style with Vintage Synthesizers

Published on Jan 19, 2013

"A re-make of Gangnam Style using vintage synthesizers.

I think it's pretty interesting how the original is instantly recognizable but the feel is very different! What if Gangnam Style had been made in 1990? It might have sounded like this..."

"Yamaha RS7000, AN200, MO6, PSR4600 + Korg MS2000 + Akai Miniak - demo "Ascentia Fantastica"

Jan 20, 2013 Note:
This video was originally uploaded in 2010. I've since remastered it for better audio quality and video performance.

Yamaha PSR4600: Airplane Drone
Yamaha RS7000: Sequencing -Drums, Bass, Synths
Korg MS2000: Pads
Yamaha AN200: Space FX
Yamaha MO6: Lead
Akai Miniak: Sound FX and Pads

The Yamaha PSR4600 is a rare "Arranger" keyboard from 1990-1991. Features a 1st generation AWM synthesis and a 2 OP FM synth. All voices can be edited to some degree. Edited voices are retained after power off.
Some sounds feature a bit of vector sequencing, much like a Yamaha TG-33.
The editing consists of just a few parameters for envelope, LFO speed & depth, FM feedback and velocity.
Instead of pitch and modulation wheels, it has roll bars. The bars are firm and well made.
Velocity sensitive keys can be enabled/disabled.
A simple 5 track sequencer.
MIDI in/out/thru
Digital reverb (hall, room & echo)
also has a weird solo mode with arpeggio-like features.

I affectionately call it 'The Albatross'."

"Rare chance to buy a Switcheroo synthesizer in fantastic condition. Only a few of these were ever made by Health Club.
Really unique sounding - deep, gritty analog whooshes and subs, as well as screeching warbles. Sounds like nothing else I've come across, yet still capable of dense, rumbling pads and wide basses. Totally analog signal.

The Switcheroo features:
2 Voltage controlled oscillators (VCO), scaled to 1v/Octave
1 Voltage-controlled filter (self-oscillating and 1v/Octave too)
1 Attack-Release envelope generator
1 Low-frequency oscillator (LFO) w
1 Voltage-controlled amplifier (VCA)
1 Envelope follower (that can trigger the envelope)
1 MIXER
1 White Noise generator
CV and gate in. (NO MIDI IN)

Based on Ray Wilson's MFOS design this is quite a one-off synth. Of all the synths I have owned it reminds me most of a VCS3 in terms of the rawness of the sound and the endless possibilities to cross modulate everything. You can also do some unusual things such as plug in a guitar, keyboard, drum machine into the envelope follower and it can then modulate the VCA, oscillators, and filter! The Envelope can be triggered by a gate signal from a sequencer or keyboard or it can be triggered by the LFO or it can self loop (like the VCS3 trapezoid). Works great as a drone machinne, as well as a full fledged synth. The oscillators can be synced together and modulated by just about anything and everything. All in all a great synth for experimentation and research into the farthest corners of the sonic sphere (OK a bit OTT but you know what I mean). Includes 12vAC adapter."

This might be the first and only one I've seen with working aftertouch.

"There are no cosmetic flaws on this unit, though I must disclose that the number pads that change the patches sometimes double when you tap them - and I think a tech who examined the unit may have left a small screw in the unit that rattles around if you pick up the keyboard and tip it. A4X21MT1 Sequencer and Eurorack Modular Synthesizer

"Unique DIY built dual 4 step analog sequencer.
In excellent cosmetic condition and tested to be in good working order.
Tested with my modular synthesizer with excellent results (see video below).
Also tested each of the 4 CV outs with a multimeter and they are between 0-5 Volts which is appropriate for eurorack and others.
Each of the 8 steps has an on off switch and pitch knob and each of the two sequence channels has an independent rate knob.
They can function separately or be synced together depending on the mode.
There is also a reset button for each set of 4.
The Trig/A and Trig/B do not produce a voltage and I am assuming they are CV inputs but could not confirm this.
They may require a stronger trigger voltage or trs input. Either way they are not needed for basic sequencing.
Everything is housed in a cool unfinished wooden case.
Includes 12V power supply."

Improvisation d'Hiver II

Published on Jan 19, 2013

"Second Improvisation performed the 11th of January 2013, on Little Phatty and Snow Virus, played simultaneously through the Little Phatty's keyboard. Film and recording by Nathan Nadal."

Per the site guidelines, you need to be able to differentiate between the synths in any given post. The idea is you can get a feel for the synth/s featured. In this case it's not as clear what synth is producing each sound, but I thought I'd post it for the unique context. This performance is actually a lecture at a high school in France. It's great to know that students are being exposed to synthesis and the more abstract sonic soundscapes they are capable of.

Via Marc-Henri: "Winter Improvisation I and II are two pieces of music performed live for those of my students who attend the course of Philosophy and Electroacoustic music at "Lycée Edouard Herriot of Lyon". I created this course two years ago with the agreement of the Principal of Lycée Edouard Herriot and the Board of education of Lyon. It takes place among a program of education and culture in which i am absolutely free ti create and test new methods of teaching to transmit the taste for culture to youth. The course is also connected with the Museum of Fine Art of Lyon in which I will give a performance of electroacoustic music and poetry in march 2013.

The pieces of music presented here consist in two improvisations performed friday the 11th of january 2013. I wanted to introduce them to the question of improvisation because we plan for may a performance with a video, a recorded collective piece in which they will take the main part and simultaneously a live improvisation on this canvas. Thus, to give them an example of this kind of thing, I gave them two improvisations with my Little Phatty and my Snow Virus playing simultaneously, the second being controlled by the keyboard of the first one.

In the first attempt, I improvise on part of the recording of De Haute Vallée which is played by the computer, from00:20 until 13:14. My aim was to show them how you can recreate a former composition by playing improvisations on it and it is for me a kind a variation in the same kind of spirit I use in the Hadikat Raja series, except that I simply open a live music field over the root composition and melt it with this root composition instead of changing the position of former elements, erasing some of them, developing others and creating new elements in each new piece to produce a series of work in progress as I do in the Hadikat Raja Series. The Little Phatty played solo ends this first performance from 15:46 to 16:16.

In the second improvisation, the Little Phatty play together and with no recorded part, from the first second to the end.

All sounds are mine on both instruments, as usual, and I had no rehearsal before. This was the first time I used the LP and the Snow, since a long time. Thus, the performance is absolutely improvised.
Both improvisations were shot and recorded on a camera, by one of my students, Nathan Nadal who also created the titles and effects of the first film. I created the titles of the second, adding a the end a recent painting to conclude by a still image.

I hope the quality of sound is not to poor. The filming and recording of these two improvisations had not been planned and since Nathan asked me if he could shoot them I said yes because it is a track of the work we do in this course."

NAMM 2013: Pittsburgh Modular Announces Avalanche of New Products

New self contained systems and cases from Pittsburg Modular.  This could be a sign of what's to come. One of the psychological barriers in getting into modulars has been where to start and how to put everything together.  Mini systems like this not only break that barrier but can be more portable and configurable in the studio.  They can also lead to easier integration with non-eurorack formats.  It's an interesting thing when you think about it.  Getting an empty case and filling it up can be fun, but psychologically it can lock you into a format.  When you look at these systems, you in essence see individual desktop synths that happen to be modular, inviting you to integrate them with other formats of gear, not just modular. Update: If you are heading to NAMM you'll find them at Hall A Booth 6005.

"The Cell[48] Modular Synthesizer System is an expandable, eurorack, small format modular broken into three separate systems. The Cell[48] System 1 is a complete single voice, analog synthesizer and a great entry point into modular synthesis. The Cell [48] System 2 is a signal manipulation powerhouse. A modular multi-effects processor packed with all the tools needed to sculpt audio and twist control voltage signals. The Cell [48] System 3 is an experimental analog modular synthesizer perfect for generating evolving textures and complex soundscapes. System 1, 2, and 3 are sold separately or together as a complete system.

Cell[48] System 1 MSRP: $599
Cell[48] System 2 MSRP: $699
Cell[48] System 3 MSRP: $799
Cell[48] Complete System MSRP: $2099 Available: March"

"Using the Synthesizer Block module as it's centerpiece, the System 1 contains all of the most important components of a modular synthesizer. Connected internally, the Cell[48] System 1 is hardwired to create a complete monophonic synthesizer without needing to add patch cables..."

"The Cell[90] Foundation Desktop Synthesizer is our flagship product. The Foundaton 2.0 has been transplanted from the road case to a sleek Pittsburgh Modular Cell[90] desktop case allowing the Foundation to feel more at home in the studio. A Toolbox module has also been added to the Cell[90] Foundation Desktop as standard equipment. The Cell[90] Foundation Desktop Expander is a new system designed to compliment the Foundation with increased modulation, sound sources, effects modules and a lot more. The Expander adds an astounding set of new of possibilities to the Foundation Desktop.

Cell[90] Foundation Desktop MSRP: $1699
Cell[90] Foundation Desktop Expander MSRP: $1399
Cell[90] Foundation Desktop Complete MSRP: $3099
Available: March"

"The Pittsburgh Modular Cell[48] and Cell[90] are expandable, desktop eurorack cases with an included power supply. A custom designed, heavy duty steel frame matched with replaceable Pennsylvania cherry hardwood sides. The desktop cases are available in single and double row configurations. Frames and wood sides are available separately to allow for easy expandability and customizing.

Cell[48] Case and Power Supply MSRP: $129
Cell[90] Case and Power Supply MSRP: $199

NAMM 2013: KOMA Elektronik announces the RH-301 Rhythm and Utility Pedal!

Published on Jan 19, 2013 KOMA Elektronik·36 videos

"KOMA Elektronik announces the RH-301 Rhythm and Utility Pedal!
New pedal features master clock with tap tempo, versatile LFO, envelope generator, MIDI and 14-point CV patch bay.

Berlin based musical instruments manufacturer KOMA Elektronik are very happy to announce a brand new pedal: the KOMA RH-301 Rhythm Workstation / Utility Tool! The RH-301 is KOMA Elektronik's solution for a problem many musicians are struggling with: analog and digital equipment that needs to run side by side in sync without running out of control, which is not always an easy task! That is why KOMA decided to build a 'Master Sync Station' that helps electronic musicians get the most out of their equipment by properly syncing (a large amount of) devices in many different ways and add some cool tricks along the way...

Master Clock
The beating heart of the pedal is the master clock, of which the tempo can be set by turning the tempo knob, by tapping a tempo on the tap button, by syncing it to MIDI or to an external CV clock signal. Besides the normal clock output the user can also divide the signal with the Divisions knob and send a faster or slower clock signal via the two Division Outputs. The generated clock signals can be passed on via CV with the two Clock Outputs, two Division Outputs or via the MIDI Output. An incoming MIDI signal can also be passed through via the MIDI Through and Out jacks.
LFO
The second feature of the RH-301 is the LFO, which can be synced to the master clock or run freely from 0,25 Hz to 260 Hz in five different shapes: sine, triangle, square, S&H and noise. This means the pedal can also be used as an oscillator, when the user turns the LFO up into the audible ranges. When the LFO is in Sync-Mode the user can choose the same divisions as the divisions of the master clock. The LFO has two separate outputs on the patch bay: LFO Out and LFO Inverted Out. All the features of the LFO are also controllable via control voltage, the pedal boasts CV inputs for LFO Speed, LFO Reset and LFO Symmetry.
Envelope Generator
The third feature of the pedal is an Envelope Generator that can be easily synced to the master clock as, or run in loop mode. Besides the normal controls for Attack, Decay, Sustain and Release the pedal comes with a Range knob to set the range of the envelopes created. The Envelope Generator comes with a normal Envelope Output, but also an Inverted Output. The Envelope Generator can be triggered by an external Gate CV Source through the Envelope Gate Input.
Besides all these features, the RH-301 also comes with a built-in KOMA Elektronik sensor, which has a separate CV Output on the patch bay as well.. Plenty of functions to get creative with, because no matter what your setup is, digital or analog or all mised together, if you use a Modular synthesizer, DAW, drum computer, synthesizer or KOMA's own BD-101 and FT-201 effect pedals, the RH-301 is a effective tool to make sure they all walk in line!

The RH-301 will be on display and ready for testing at NAMM'13 at booths 1170 in Hall E (Analogue Haven) and 6735 in Hall A (Big City Music).

MRSP: To Be Announced! The RH-301 will be available in the beginning of Q2 of 2013 at KOMA Elektronik dealers worldwide and directly from KOMA Elektronik's webstore at www.koma-elektronik.com."

"This Omega 2 SC is the most affordable Studio electronics Omega model. It's a duophonic synthetizer. You can either play two notes at a time, either play in unisson to get a huge sound, split the keyboard with 2 different sounds or stack 2 different sounds (thus, in this last case, play monophonic). An analog synth that can rival this synth is probably another Omega with more voices.
Specifications & Options

Except the number of voices and the memory (this synth offers 128 Multimode patches and 256 Factory Presets), full specification of this synth is available at SE web site.

This synthesizer comes with three voltage controlled discrete analog filters: 24db (classic Moog®), 12db (classic Oberheim® - incorporates low pass, band pass, high pass and band reject modes) and classic Roland® 303. Each voice can access all 3 filters.

This Omega is fitted with a "Fuzz" circuit for amp overdrive and saturation, switchable on voice 1 only, or on both voices (see the video demo I recently recorded and uploaded to YouTube : "Omega 2 overdrive demo").

This "Fuzz" circuit is a genuine Studio electronics circuit. Only available as an option for the CODE serie, this option makes this synth unique. The power switch, on the front panel has been moved to the back, close to the power socket, and replaced by a 3 positions overdrive switch."

Optical synth + korg Emx + Kaoss pad

Published on Jan 19, 2013 Gavin Howe·3 videos

"Made my first "synth theremin" yesterday, sending it through the audio in+comb on the emx with flanger pitch shift (-12) and some short delay, then into kp3 for stereo delay, just playing around with different capacitors and korg effects. All sounds originate from the optical synth.

enjoy:)"
