4ms joins ever-expanding Softube Modular platform

"LINKÖPING, SWEDEN: high-end plug-in specialist Softube is proud to announce that highly respected synth module-maker 4ms has joined the ever-expanding Modular platform — the virtual Eurorack system released last year to rave reviews — to become a licensed brand alongside Doepfer and Intellijel, as of June 7...

One of the most striking Eurorack modules made by 4ms is the Spectral Multiband Resonator; having joined Softube’s successful Modular platform, it is fitting that the first product is also available to Modular owners today: 4ms Spectral Multiband Resonator (SMR). In short, 4ms SMR can process audio like a classic filter bank, ring like a marimba when plucked/struck, act as a vocoder, remix tracks, harmonize, output spectral data, quantize other oscillators to scales, and much more besides. It is deep, versatile, and endlessly expands what it is possible to achieve with Modular. Moreover, the 4ms SMR plug-in is light on the host computer’s CPU and comes complete with 75 expertly produced presets.

Simultaneously, Softube is releasing Modular-adapted versions of its award-winning TSAR-1 and TSAR-1R reverbs. These use the same algorithms and have the same feature set as their standard plug-in counterparts, meaning Modular users now have an easier way to add the world’s finest plug-in reverbs to their synth patches. But it extends far beyond that. The Volume and Wet/Dry parameters are CV controllable, making for new and creative uses — setting an envelope filter to control the Wet/Dry level, for instance. In addition, patching the reverb output to any other module opens up a whole world of creative possibilities, such as shimmering pitch-shifted reverbs, filtered spaces, and crazy feedback mayhem. 27 new presets are available to get going.

Get this, though. The license for TSAR-1 and TSAR-1R for Modular is one and the same as for the standard versions of the plug-ins, so owners of both Modular and either of the reverbs — including all subscribers and owners of the Volume 1 bundle — can simply download the update and get to work without making any additional purchases. Conversely, buying TSAR-1 or TSAR-1R with the intention of using them with Modular makes them available as traditional reverb plug- ins... one license, many uses!

4ms SMR is an add-on to Softube’s Modular, and can only be used from within the Modular platform. It is available now at an introductory price of $39. After June 30, 2017, the module will be priced at $49.

More in-depth information, including a must-see 4ms SMR video, is available here: http://softu.be/4ms_smr

Both TSAR... plug-ins are presently part of Softube’s ongoing Summer Sale, so TSAR-1 is now available for $199 (down from $269) while TSAR-1R — which is feature limited, but uses exactly the same reverb algorithm as its bigger sibling brother — is $49 (down from $99). Prices return to normal after June 30, 2017.

For more in-depth information, please visit the dedicated TSAR-1 product page — predominantly focusing on the standard plug-in version — here: http://softu.be/TSAR_1"

synSpace: Drone Runners - Synth Meets Video Game

Published on Jun 6, 2017 Dan Samuel

Thought this was kind of interesting. It's a synth in a game for Android. The first and sixth video cover the synth.

The following is the description for the first video, synSpace: Drone Runners - Synthesizer Filter Test:

"Once again I didn't notice the camera thought I was in portrait mode, and once again google appears to have magically fixed it, but if it is odd for you, then it is my fault, not Google's

This is a capture of the current state of the Filter and the overall set up of the Synthesizer (that is built into the synSpace game, to facilitate making musical instruments and sound effects for your star map compositions) Or just something to waste time with.

Metaphorically, I am pretending the row of attenuators is my 'eurorack' and each knob is one slot of the rack, and that knob does whatever the most important thing the module in that slot does.

Tap an attenuator to open its module's detail window, which has more buttons, unique to that module. Tap a Contour Generator 'tab' above for details on a contour. So lots more little windows of information...

Unlike a eurorack, however, the connections between modules are a hardwired pipeline, I wave my hands and say that someday my script api will let you rewire the pipeline under scripted control. Then I push the responsibility (and the UI) to you, the starmap developer!

OK, the pipeline is roughly keyBoard Note freq and impact starts all the contour generators at the same time and the FM module adjusts the 'key freq'

the key freq then drives up to 9 oscillators, though recent changes make the individual oscillators more powerful so 9 is overkill which means I can dump some for more modules in the future.

The oscillators have a waveform (sine, triangle, square, saw and -saw), a distortion, and a half step offset option so an individual oscillator can be tuned to 'key freq plus a fifth' for an appealing extra voice in every note.

Oscillators are mixed with their individual attenuators and that output goes into the Filter. The filter can be configured in many ways and its output goes to the AM module and then to the reverb and final AGC and output.

The oscilloscope can be aimed at any number of 'special interesting values' because I store those values in an easily indexed array. My thought is that is half a cross switch to allow a 'virtual cabling' where the cable starts at the input of some module, and then connects to one of these special outputs. which are the outputs of all the modules (plus some). Should be pretty flexible. But that part is vaporware. Today it's the fixed pipeline"

Modular Synth - WMD PDO & Synchrodyne - A Little Ditty I'm Working On

Published on Jun 7, 2017 isvisible / isinvisible

"Working on a little ditty with the WMD Phase Displacement Oscillator (PDO) and Synchrodyne.
The PDO is being routed direct from it's filter (Quad AFF) mix output into a rackmount ARP Omni Ensemble unit for stringish sounds.
The Synchrodyne (3 of it's outputs mixed together) is being routed through a ZVEX Instant Lo-Fi Junky and then out via an Intellijel Springray for organish sounds.

Bassdrum and snare from the Folktek Matter is being routed through a Mungo d0 which is being cv'd to create a bassline.

I think I'll be adding a few more bits and pieces to it, but thought it sounded quite nice for a simple patch."

Audulus 3.4 Update Adds Support for Multichannel Audio/CV Output

"Audulus LLC is proud to announce the release of Audulus version 3.4 - a free update for all Audulus platforms* allowing users to access up to 16 audio and control voltage (CV) inputs and outputs through two brand-new nodes called ADC (analog-to-digital converter) and DAC (digital-to-analog converter).

Previously, Audulus users were limited to two inputs and two outputs using the Mic and Speaker nodes. Now, with the ADC and DAC nodes, Audulus users can take full advantage of their DC-coupled** audio interfaces, such as the Expert Sleepers ES-8 and the Universal Audio Apollo.

This means that users can now integrate Audulus seamlessly with hardware synthesizers and analog effects pedals using their computer or iOS device.

Some examples uses include:
Sending and receiving simultaneous audio, modulation, and envelope CVs to up to 4 Eurorack filters for true analog filter polyphony
Clocking multiple Korg Volcas at different speeds or divisions of a master clock
Sequencing analog synthesizers with volt-per-octave (VPO) signals
Receiving multiple DC signals from hardware controllers like CV joysticks and ribbon controllers for ultra-high-resolution control over your digital synthesizers
Receiving, quantizing, and sending out analog VPO signals
Generating LFOs and envelopes of any imaginable shape
Using stompboxes on a send & return within your Audulus patches
Cloning, adapting, and modifying true work-alikes of digital and analog Eurorack modules
Generating quadraphonic or surround-sound-style effects for keyboards and guitar
Receiving an analog master clock and generating divisions, probability triggers, or Euclidean-style rhythm sequencing (or mix of all!)
Storing, recalling, and rapidly switching between different modular synth patch routings
Analyzing a guitar’s pitch and volume envelope within Audulus and converting them to an analog VPO and envelope signal
Using Audulus as a multi-effect rack with 4 mono inputs and outputs or 2 stereo inputs and outputs (with an Expert Sleepers ES-8)

These are just a few of the possibilities Audulus users have explored so far. To keep up with patches and modules using the new ADC and DAC nodes, sign up for the Audulus user forum and download and share your patches there - http://forum.audulus.com

An example of Audulus sequencing VPO signals and envelopes through an Expert Sleepers ES-8:

Users can also follow Audulus on Instagram, Twitter, Youtube, Soundcloud, and Facebook @audulus for tutorials, video clips, and sound samples of what the ADC and DAC nodes can do.

If Audulus users have any questions about how to implement the ADC and DAC nodes, they can contact Audulus at support@audulus.com

Happy patching from all of us at Audulus!

* Audulus iOS requires the Apple Camera Connector Kit to connect to the Expert Sleepers ES-8.

**Most normal audio interfaces are AC-coupled. AC-coupling prevents a constant DC offset from damaging speakers and headphones. DC-coupled audio interfaces like the Expert Sleepers ES-8 are not required to use all 16 inputs and outputs of an audio interface or aggregate device. DC-coupled audio interfaces are required to send and receive accurate DC-offset analog signals such as gates, VPO signals, and envelopes.

Example Videos of Audulus + ES-8

This picture shows a self-oscillating filter entering Audulus through audio input 4 of the Expert Sleepers ES-8 using the ADC node, and sending two oscillators through outputs 7 and 8 of the ES-8 using the DAC node to the Mordax DATA oscilloscope in XY mode."

New AMSynths AM8144 "Fat Keys" VCF SSI2144 Based Eurorack Filter Module

via AMSynths

"This module uses the SSI2144 chip to provide a 24dB Low Pass voltage controlled filter. This is a new chip based on the original SSM2044 from 1980. It is a cascade filter designed by Dave Rossum and Ron Dow, and re-issued by Dan Parks at SSI. It emulates the Moog ladder filter but with improved accuracy and lower noise using current mirrors.

This is a warm sounding filter with smooth frequency control and a resonance that gradually increases up to full self oscillation, a sound very reminiscent of the mid 1980's.

There are front panel controls for adjusting the Cutoff Frequency and Resonance as well as the level of 2x control voltages and 3x audio signal inputs. We have used high quality control knobs on the AM8144, a new atheistic for AMSynths modules.

There are six 3.5mm jack sockets on the right of the front panel;
3x Audio Signal Inputs (10V peak to peak)
2x Control Voltages (0V to +5V)
Audio Signal Output"

The kick drum is from the Hexinverter BD9, Snare from Audio Damage Boomtschak, percussion from Audio Damage Neuron and noise from the SSF Quantum Rainbow 2 into the Make Noise Optomix. The bass is sequenced by the WMD Arpitecht and is two Intellijel Dixie II +s going into a AJH Minimod VCF and then a Hexinverter Galilean Moons for VCA and envelopes.

MSCL, from WMD, is a compact Stereo Compressor designed as a master compressor to help glue ones mix together. It is based off the DBX "Over Easy" style compressor, with attack and release knobs, output gain, and a master Compression knob which decreases threshold, increases gain and ratio with just one turn. Also included is a Limiter, which can be switched on to make the MSCL act as a peak limiter. A threshold switch can change the settings to function with signals with different volumes.

This unit is in excellent cosmetic and working condition. I have the original manuals, and patch sheet. I will include an M-64C data cartridge. This is the last of the great analog Roland synths... big strings, pads, and orchestral sounds.. with tons of I/O options. Check out the link below to see a quick demo of the functionality of this unit, along with the JX-10 and PG800 that I'm selling in separate auctions."
