ALTAIR 231-Soviet MiniMoog Model D SN 3346

via this auction

"Altair 231 is an almost identical copy of the famous Moog Minimoog, made in the former Soviet Union. Biggest difference in sound is caused by different brand of components: Russian equivalents are used everywhere. The oscillator board is based on the older version. However, the Russians were clever and used multi-turn potentiometers for the scaling controls. Result: Synth stays in tune better. The Russians didn't seem to have reverse log pots. Because of that, the resonance control was wired backwards and a regular logarithmic pot was used instead. Other than that, the synth seems to be very robust and easy to service - the real Mini schematics come for good help when comparing the component numbers etc. It sounds like a Mini!"

"It was manufacture on 'Estradin' military radio plant in Zhitomir city in November 1986. The serial number of the unit -3345."

"Soviet analogue drum synth Formanta UDS with beatbox drummachine and a built-in beatbox with 16 patterns. You can switch every drum sound channel to its preset sound or switch it in "synthesis" mode and then control channel's parameters by 8 knobs. The synth was made on the same factory as legendary Polivoks was. The beatbox and the synthesizer are independent modules so they can work at the same time freely. Each of five drum channels have polivoks filter. High-hat and cymbal have there own channels. 7 audio in connectors on the rear panel for each drum channel - mono audio out, left /right out. Pedal inputs. All connectors are on standard 1/4 '' jack. There is also a stereo output. You can use trigger module inputs to send signal from an external device through synchro impuls. All drums and high-hat work well. Cymbal works quieter than other. Inside on the resistors of each drum line there are full ADSR polivoks filter. If you wish, you can make a modd and take it out with knobs. All knobs are clean, without noise. Also look foto with English translation of face panel."

The Digitakt is here, and the Octatrack just got a new MKII update. Which one to choose!? They are overlapping in what they can do, but I think they are different enough to justify that Elektron keeps selling both of them.

So here's a mega workflow comparison video where I'm comparing them side by side in a number of aspects. It's a bit long, but if you're interested in this stuff, I hope you'll find the video interesting.

19 minute synth jam (ms-20, system-1, nord, elektron, monologue, volca)

Published on Jun 30, 2017 ollilaboratories

"If you like my stuff please support me on http://music.ollilab.com/ and https://www.patreon.com/theBURG

I wanted to push the limits a bit with this one, and try to make a long 20+ minute jam session.. and I failed! :D 19.44 dammit!

This is a piece written in 2 parts, an ambient style intro which moves toward an upbeat section. Even though the track is only 99bpm i wanted to make it feel like its moving pretty fast.

00:00 Part I
05:55 Part II

There is loads and loads of stuff going on in this one, intro is made with the NLA1 + reface CP and a reverse piano loop on the tc electronic ditto looper. Reface CP in the intro has FX bluesky reverb mix on full, so the accents are washed away in the reverb for a smooth dreamy sound.

The NLA1 is being controlled by an expression pedal, which opens up the filter and increases the rate on the built in phaser FX i am using on the pad sound. The ms-20 has a brutal bass-pad sound .. laced with some white noise on top for that creamy dirty feel + through the el cap and space for ambience.

Volca bass does the low bass, monologue a modulated bass with noise, 0-coast a messed up randomized bass melody.. + elektron with a couple resonant hits and basses over the top.

Modular is doing a wavetable mishmash through the morphagene + some weird modulated delays in the space spiral.

All in all, i went sort of all in on this one, but I feel its pretty laid back anyways, which was the goal for this track.

Gear used: TR-8, System-1, TB-3, KORG volca bass x2, keys, (fm not in use), monologue, ms-20, 0-coast, erbus, elektron analog four, reface CP, NLA1, microgranny MG.2.4

Modular, braids wavetable mishmash through the morphagene - rack on modulargrid: https://www.modulargrid.net/e/racks/v...

FX, strymon bluesky, el capistan, eventide space, mooer skyverb, red panda particle, catalinbread CSIDMAN, tc electronic ditto X2, ms-70 CDR, eaerthquaker devices space spiral, keeley engineering caverns

Big thanks to the burgonauts for making this video possible - BoOoOoM enjoy !"

Erica Synths - Black VC EG & Expander

"HEAD TO THIS POST TO WIN THE ENVELOPE & EXPANDER ON PATREON! - http://bit.ly/divkidgiveaway1 - YOU HAVE UNTIL JULY 30TH.

This is a long video so scroll down for the contents to skip through to certain patches.

The Erica Synths Black series VC EG (voltage controlled envelope generator) and expander bring a unique trick or two to the envelope world and to be blunt are just ace! There's tweak knob responses so the times scale from 0 seconds to 1.5 seconds at 12 o'clock on the knob then from 1.5 seconds to 12 seconds full clockwise. The expander adds a unique CV mode that breaks out the envelope stages into independent CV sources. This is different from the logic mode that gives us a gate outputs while that stage on the envelope is active as each output is variable. The attack output (in CV mode) will rise from 0 volts through the attack time and shape set on the module and then as it hits the decay stage that voltage drops to zero. The decay output then immediately rises from being inactive at 0 volts to full voltage and decays in line with the decay time and so on. This is a long video as it really opens lots of opportunities with the features mentioned and a few other bits. So here's a clickable set of contents to skip around.

Intellijel Cylonix Shapeshifter - What's New In 2.02

Published on Jun 30, 2017 intellijel

"The latest firmware for the Intellijel Cylonix Shapeshifter adds and improves a huge list of features. This video gives a short demonstration of what's new in 2.02.

Version 2.02
Changed: encoder selection for CHORD TYPE or BANK now wraps around the entire list but quick rotation will shortcut you (stop) at the list end or beginning.

Version 2.01.1

Fixed: COMB+LOAD operation to initialize all settings to zero.

Version 2.01

Added: the CHORD TYPE parameter can now be controlled by the MODB signal.
Added: the wave bank selection for oscillators 1 and 2 can now be controlled by the MODB signal.
Added: the two oscillators now have independently selectable SYNC MODES, and both now have 1-shot and Hold modes.
Added: pressing the INT. SYNC button twice causes the internal sync event generator to drop in frequency by one octave (the INT. SYNC LED flashes when this mode is selected).
Added: when the QUANT. button is pressed twice the PITCH2 input becomes a CLOCK input for oscillator 2, where the period of the oscillator 2 cycle is equal to the input clock period. The QUANT. led flashes in this mode. In this mode the RATIO input sets the clock division/multiplication factor.
Added: 8 more pulse modes, including PWM, Square and random.
Added: added another mode to the PRESET STEP menu, where the preset is randomized on each step.
Added: pressing COMBO MODE and MORPH while in PRESET MODE randomizes the settings.
Added: pressing DETUNE and LOAD while in PRESET MODE displays the firmware version.
Added: the oscillator 2 output can be directed to modulate the SHAPE1 or TILT parameters.
Added: the MODA signal can now be used to serve as the SYNC source for oscillator 2 or to step presets.
Changed: the DECAY parameter range has been changed to give a smoother change with more values at longer decay times.
Changed: the PERC. MODE LED now flashes when the Gate behaviour is selected (by pressing the PERC. MODE button twice).
Changed: the initial part of the INT. FM control curve has been changed to give more resolution at the low end.
Changed: the number of presets has been increased to 100 and all presets are now stored in non-volatile memory. The presets now have user-definable 8-character labels, which can be randomized.
Changed: the number of the last preset to be loaded or saved is remembered, and is loaded upon powerup (previously preset# 1 was loaded on powerup).
Changed: the range of the TILT parameter has been lowered by a factor of 4. This gives more resolution in the interesting range of the tilt effect.
Changed: the bank numbers and chord type no longer wrap around, making it easier to reach the ends.
Changed: knobs are set to soft-pickup after a preset is loaded, even when leaving preset mode. Soft-pickup action is changed so that the knob takes over from the preset value when it is moved a little bit.
Changed: the labels for the MODA destinations “Shape1” and “Shape2” have been changed to “Shaper1” and “Shaper2” to better reflect the actual behaviour in these modes.
Fixed: Added a short (4msec) delay to the MODB Preset Stepping after the sync pulse is received. This is needed because many sequencers send the gate signal before the voltage has settled to its new value."

Roland TR-606 Drumatix

Published on Jun 29, 2017 tiergrinder

"16+ minutes of sounds from the Rolands TR-606 Drumatix drum machine. Recorded dry without any effects or post processing.

606 is sometimes referred as the poormans TR-808. It doesn't sound quite like an 808 and it only has 7 sounds (Kick, Snare, Lo Tom, Hi Tom, Cymbal, Closed Hihat, Open Hihat), but it still carries that Roland X0X vintage charm. I bet the looks doesn't hurt either.

TR-606 sequencer does something that many other classics didn't do. It can switch between pattern play and pattern write modes, while the sequncer is running. Sounds are classic Roland from the 80's. TR-606 Kick is relatively weak when compaired to other sounds, but with mixing kick all the way up, cranking some accent and mixing other sounds lower levels, the 606 Kick can have some nice punch to it. Snare isn't exactly like on the TR-808 but its similar. Tom sounds gets closest to the 808 realm, while hihats sound more metallic, if thats even possible. From all the rolands analog drum machines, I love the 606 hihats the most. They sizzle and shine, and can really cut through when accent is applied to them. Overall the 606 is fun little box. Its cute, small but powerful and it has that analog drum machine magic.

This video is tad long and even boring at times, but I wanted to record long video, that shows simple beat making from start to finish and show some programmed patterns."

Roland MKS-70 + Vecoven OS 4.09 + PWM Upgrade

Note: links to listings are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"Released in 1986, it was Roland's last analog synth and boy it is a monster with 12 voices and 24 oscillators! The MKS70 is the rack version of the JX10 and is essentially 2x JX8P engines in a box with a nice VFD display.

This is no vanilla MKS70, it comes loaded with the latest Vecoven OS version 4.09 which completely overhauls the synth to allow proper modern MIDI control along with A LOT of extra features. This unit also has the PWM upgrade which unlocks Roland's unimplemented PWM in the synth, further extending its power. I'm also including a Behringer BCR2000 with a template that is already mapped to the MKS70 which you will need to have knob per function control over all the new features added in the OS upgrade.

You can read about the upgrades here"

Baseck Jamming with a Rare Pearl Fightman FM8

There have only been four previous posts to this one featuring the Pearl Fightman FM8. Anyone know when these were produced? Wikipedia doesn't even mention the Fightman FM8.

Update via Atomic Shadow:

"I bought a brand new Pearl Fightman drum set in 1984, just before my son was born. It cost $400.00. It had 5 identical 10 inch trigger pads with black, Remo drum heads. The sides of the pads were blue and the stands that came with it were crap. The sound module had one, sampled sound for the toms, bass, snare, hit, cymbals, etc. The adjustments were very basic. Pitch, sustain, volume. That's about it."
