"Modules used and some brief patch notes:

All sequencing is programmed on a pair of ER-101's, one of which is coupled to a ER-102 sister controller module.

Continuing on my journey of creating music solely on a modular synthesiser, this song has been in the works for a while (a lot longer than I would usually spend on a patch anyway) partially because i'm expecting an ER-301 any day now after a long lead time, I wanted to integrate the 301 as i'm interested how the 301 is going to affect the music I can create in a modular environment, i'm excited to sink my teeth into it. Secondly to that, I felt an emotional connection with this track i've enjoyed listening to it, exploring it and programming it.

At the heart of my rack is a pair of ER-101's that do all of the sequencing, each one has 4 tracks, each track has 3 outputs (CV-A,CV--B and GATE) I will often use CV-A for melody or pitch and CV-B for distributing control voltages to parameters around the rack, if however CV-A is on a track that is only outputting Gates that gives me 2 channels of CV that can be fine tuned to any value, lots of control just the way I like it. I've always written music in a DAW, and the ER-101 pair allows me to approach sequencing in a similar, reserved and meticulous way.

They provide me with all the brushes I need for my paintings.

There are 3 main voices,
- Elements in Ominous Voice mode 4x4 FM operator, which is the main melody. Damping controls the amount of filter modulation from the internal envelope on the output of Elements, so to add accents and introduce more frequency content. CV-B track 3 on the ER-101 controls damping, and the entirety of track 3 controls Elements.
- Loquelic Iteritas - in SS mode playing chords with rings. Some modulation sent from Ornament and Crime controls FOLD (introducing more frequency content) using the same gate to trigger a different envelope.
- Rings in 2x2 FM operator mode, tuned to a nice interval for nice dispersion of harmonics. This plays chords with Loquelic (and itself, polyphony is set to 4 voices), small amount of modulation to the POSITION on Rings, controlling the feedback between oscillators creating some really nice beating on the lower frequencies. Rings is sent to the Erbe-verb which is always modulating itself so the internal Lfo is set to 11.30, decay is set to 12.00, Depth at 14.00 decreasing the depth of modulation, Tilt at 10.00 filtering out some of the upper harmonics and absorb is at 12.00 also filtering / dulling, ultimately thickening the sound the Erbe-verb is fantastic.

Clouds is processing Loquelic, creating random grains and adding reverb

DPO - is used for the kick created using Streams as a VCA / Envelope combo Exponential envelope and a second envelope from MATHS to modulate the exponential FM input on the DPO for a sharp descending pitch.

DPO second oscillator FINAL output is used to create the percussion, fm sent from VCO-A to VCO-B FM index all the way up, Exponential attenuator full lock, linear at 10.00. Sent to Dual looping delay, the DLD's parameters are modulated by the ER-101.

Braids is used to create a snare, using its internal envelopes / modulation. Also sent to the DLD, delay time is modulated from really short times to slower, to create fills.

Belgrad is filtering the Loquelic Iteritas' more digital harmonics out. with 2 different resonant peaks, allowing me to pick out the harmonics I thought sounded best.

Erica Synths Black Octasource: first patch

Published on Jul 10, 2017 voltlife

"My first experiment with Erica's Octasource: using the 8 outputs to control the 8 harmonics of the Verbos Harmonic Oscillator seemed like a natural fit! Indeed, in both multi- and single-wave mode, it created interesting harmonic/melodic rhythms on top of the basic Moskwa sequence that drives the HO.

I also used a slower sequence from a Verbos Voltage Multistage to change around the wave selections in the Octasource, and some clock dividers to sync the LFO rate.

There's some clipping and clicking here and there (I told you it was my first experiment!). The clipping is largely because the Verbos HO can send out a very hot signal when lots of harmonics are on, and the clicks are because the Octasource includes some waves with sharp transitions (like pulses and saws). If you wanted to avoid that, stick to the smoother waves or add a tiny bit of slew. I've also added a bit of reverb and delay to fill out the sound, but it doesn't change the fundamentals of the patch."

"Access Virus Dark Cinematics Live Jamming - using 4 instances of Virus Powercore (4x16=64 voices), I improvised and jammed with the Virus Dark Cinematic presets for an hour, using some of my custom developed Synthmorph tools.

All sounds were recorded straight to four Cubase audio tracks, then quickly top'n tailed the best parts, but no mixing and equalization took place. I wanted to keep the live feel, creating the slideshow was a fast action too.

This audio demo will present you the darkest, trippy and sinister side of the Access Virus. These Virus patches are perfect for cinematic, television scoring, movie soundtracks, original lo-fi electronica, game music, ambient electronica or space music.

TRAX RetroWave R-1...modulated by Ants!

Published on Jul 9, 2017 Nice and Synths

"This is a video! All audio comes from the RetroWave, which was recorded direct into a Focusrite Scarlett 18i6. Ants! is just used for modulating stuff. Mostly at audio rates. Whee. This video in no way show all the sounds possible with the RetroWave, but it does contain sound, which is important for a synthesizer demo.

0:00 - Ants! provides various audio-rate modulation of the RetroWave's VCF. Arpeggiator pattern from Casio XW-P1 controls the R-1 via MIDI, velocity modulates filter cutoff.

2:02 - Slight low frequency pulse width modulation from Ants!, changing to audio-rate PWM.

2:42 - Various modulations of the VCO as well as complex triggering of the RetroWave's envelope.

3:30 - Back to the audio rate PWM, but now with VCO and VCF modulation as well. A suboscillator and noise are added, as well as the RetroWave's overdrive.

3:59 - Ants! is used to modulate the VCO, both low frequency and audio-rate. After a while of that kind of crap, I cut to where filter resonance was added and I turned on the RetroWave's overdrive. In addition, I move my arm around aimlessly.

The TRAX RetroWave R-1 is a single oscillator analog synthesizer with a heap of knobs. Despite having just one oscillator, the RetroWave has some interesting features, like two square wave suboscillators (-1 and -2 octaves,) two LFOs with variable waveshapes and the ability to go into audio range (if I remember right they max out at around 170 Hz) and a dirty fuzzy sounding overdrive. On this last point, I should note that I have the original RetroWave, I think the current model has a "softer" distortion. I have no idea what it sounds like.

The RetroWave also has inputs for external CV control of the VCO, PWM, VCF, and VCA. This allows a device like Ants! to modulate the crap out of stuff, the only caveats are the inputs are on 1/4 inch jacks (1/8 to 1/4 inch cables to the rescue), and there are no attenuators.

The TRAX RetroWave R-1 has a very long name and is also a nice sounding synth. It has a fuzzy vintagey sound, and while the LFOs can go into audio range a little bit, using another device to get full audio rate modulation really shows the depth of sounds possible from the R-1. Not that this video shows that, it's kind of lame. But in the hands of someone with a clue it could really sound good.

Finally, I can't decide if it is TRAX or Trax. On the website (www.traxcontrols.com/retrwoave) it is written Trax, but on the instrument itself it is TRAX. I thought TRAX looked better so I went with that. :)"

Sequential Circuits Prelude

"I have been collecting a lot of string synths lately, and the Prelude is one of the most versatile. It has a particularly good resonant filter, and can go from vintage string bliss to biting, funky clavs and synth/brass stabs, to jazzy organs with the flick of a switch and a push of the filter. AND you can layer everything for a huge sound that is like nothing else. The EQ and Modulation as well as the resonant filter give you a lot of variety and control. And the full polyphony allows for some huge sustained soundscapes. I am learning that string synths are the best source of that elusive vintage sound without spending thousands of dollars.

The Prelude reminds me a lot of the Korg Delta but with additional instruments and a sophisticated EQ and modulation section.

The keybed plays really well, and all knobs and switches work as expected. There is no noise in the outputs, and there is minimal if any static when moving faders. This synth has been well taken care of and just serviced to ensure it is in top condition. You will notice some slight marks on the bottom right corner, but otherwise it is very nice."

So many musicians have asked me about a good playback
sampler for LIVE use that won't break their backs, or the bank!!
The ROLAND JUNO-DS comes up as the right answer, no joke!
It doesn't sample, but it loads & plays STEREO .WAV's like a
champ. And they sound good!!! (Well if you start with a clean
sample that is!!) It has 32mb FLASH inside so you can load
& store your favorite samples right on the synth & go!! A+++

In this quick (& sometimes bouncy) "How-to" demo I load &
demo some of my custom Analog Synthesizer samples from
my personal collections for sale on Reverb SYNC.
Roland Juno-106, Moog Little Phatty, Oberheim Matrix-6
& a sample from a Dave Smith Instruments Prophet 08....
just to show YOU CAN DO IT & IT CAN SOUND GOOD BABY!!
Also some PROS & CONS about the synthesizer are discussed.
I love the Roland JUNO-DS & will be using it for a LIVE backing
tracks player & vocoder for my synth-pop electronic industrial
band EARTH EMPIRE when we play out this fall 2017. :)
There will be plenty of video of the synth in action coming later
on this year I promise!
