Sonicsmith Introduces the Modulor A1 Synth

Modulor A1 synth intoduction Published on Dec 4, 2017 Sonicsmith

"We introduce the Modulor A1 synth.

It's a semi-modular, analog music synthesizer that can create traditional sounds but extreme modulations as well.
It runs on standard 9V pedal PSU and has 1V/octave pitch input."

"MODULOR A1

SEMI-MODULAR ANALOG SYNTHESIZER.

Our newest synth is not audio controlled but can come as a perfect accompaniment to them.

In fact The Modulor A1 will enhance any existing analog synth rig, allowing them to enrich their sound beyond belief. The Modulor A1 contains a VCO, LFO (each sync-able), two VCAs (one dedicated to the VCO and the other to the LFO), and numerous patching options. Both VCO and LFO can be square or triangle waves and a switch sends LFO to modulate VCO frequency for some vibrato (at lower LFO rates) or FM (at LFO rates up to 200Hz) effects.

The Modulor A1 is here to dive deep into modular synthesis in the 9V pedal environment. This Voltage Controlled Synthesizer has two audio outputs. One at regular line level (+4dBu) via big jack, and the other is a mini jack on the top panel (9V). This can be fed into a modular synthesizer environments if one wants to use the VCO voice through his Eurorack inputs for example. Another use for this mini jack oscillator is a ring modulation source on the Squaver P1 or any other CV input for that matter. You will get surprised of the results every time you patch it to a different CV destination. As a stand-alone synth the Modulor A1 has quite a bit of power as well. Allowing you to make all kinds of effects and melodies without even a single patch cable. Of course when you consider a few mini-jack to mini-jacks cables the possibilities are more exiting and you'r doomed to fall into an endless pool of tweaking. Either as a companion to our Audio Controlled Synths or along with your own modular synths, this handy 9 X 10 cm synth is a tiny version of a modular synth. The VCO pitch input is 1V/octave and has a 9V minijack output on the front. The other VCO output is a big jack on the back at line level unbalanced+4 dBu. VCO sync input will reset the wave's position to zero every time a threshold of 0V is crossed. The LFO sync input threshold is 3.0v for compatibility with most gate signals. Two knobs for pitch offset 20Hz-20kHz and the other knob is -4-+4 semitones.
Features:

VCO, LFO and two VCAs

9V standard pedal PSU

VCO with two outputs: a big jack +4 dBu post VCA and a minijack 9V out without VCA to control as clock or mix into Eurorack system.

Sync input on both the LFO and the VCO

LFO from 0.2 Hz up to 200Hz for FM synthesis

“LFO to VCO pitch in” switch for instant satisfaction"

Circuit Bent Kawai K1m sequenced by Circuit

Published on Dec 4, 2017 HardtekStudios

"I Circuit Bent this Kawai K1m e few years back, but have barely used it. So it is time to pull it out, hook it up and make some crazy noise with it! Somehow, over the years, it has developed a glitch where it has a pulsing sound with any patch that has a lot of sustain and release, so I guess you can call it perm-bent. It still is very usable, and even without any bend it sounds pretty good. The Novation Circuit is sequencing the K1m via midi. Circuit is also providing the drums."

via this auction

"This Circuit Bent Kawai K1m has 5 additional switches that create different tonalities and can SIMULATE bit crushing FX, Octaving FX, Ring Modulation, etc. THERE IS A GLITCH THAT CAUSES LONG, SUSTAINED SOUNDS TO HAVE A PULSING EFFECT TO THEM. NO MATTER THE POSITION OF THE SWITCHES. To turn off all bends, switches must be pointing to the left/outside end of case with the exception of the 2nd to bottom switch.

This synth comes from the 80's and has been user modified to have extra switches that can "scramble" the digital information that makes up the sound. The switches only affect sound, they don't affect any other operation of the unit, so it still reacts as it should and responds to midi very well."

SUZANNE CIANI
---------------------------

Suzanne Ciani is a true synthesizer pioneer. She was one of the early disciples of 70’s synth maker Don Buchla and uses his modular equipment ever since. She was responsible for a revolution in advertising sound design, by the creation of the famous Coca-Cola ‘plop’ sound. A distinctive sound, that is recognized all over the world. The real breakthrough came in the 80’s, with calming new age space-music, earning her 5 Grammy nominations.

His large-scale immersive art installations - spatial compositions of visuals, light and sound - transform human behaviour into hypnotic environments. Nick Accompanies Ciani by composing with light corresponding with her music performance. Using control voltages from Ciani’s modular Buchla synthesizer, he transforms sound envelopes, rhythms and spatial dynamics into light parameters."

Building My Aleph Patch Published on Dec 3, 2017 Todd Barton

"5 years ago I created a patch that I called The Krell https://vimeo.com/48466272 [posted here]
It was developed on a Buchla system and its name paid homage to Bebe and Louis
Barron and their pioneering electronic music from the film Forbidden Planet.

For the past many months I’ve be working of a similar yet different patch I call
The Aleph after the short story of the same name by visionary and imaginative writer, Jorges Luis Borges. web.mit.edu/allanmc/www/borgesaleph.pdf
'an Aleph is one of the points in space that contains all other points.'

This patch was developed using a constellation of eurorack modules. Hopefully this description and walk-through of building the patch will be a catalyst for others to develop, enjoy and explore!

My thanks to fellow travelers along the way who have encouraged, prodded and given me feedback: Bruno Liberda, Daniel Cramer, James Cigler, Gerald Good, Darrin Wiener, Bruce Bayard, Adam Scramstad, Charles Seeholzer, Michael Vannice, Robert Coburn, Federico Placidi, Colin Spiby, Michael Maag and Matrixsynth to name a few… Thank you!"

Portabella modular quick and dirty

Published on Dec 3, 2017 Pin Electronics & Ramcur

New Doepfer Eurorack Modules

"Module A-150-8 contains eight manually/voltage controlled switches. Each of the eight switches has a manual control button (Man.), a control voltage input (CV), a common Out / Input (O/I), and two In / Outputs (I/O1, I/O2). The switches are bi-directional, i.e. they can work in both directions, so can connect one input to either of two outputs, or either of two inputs to one output. Two LEDs show which in / output is active (i.e. which is connected to the common out / input). In addition the LEDs are used for the programming of the module:

For each unit the operating mode can be selected: Toggle or Level controlled. In Toggle mode the rising edge of the CV input or operating the manual control button changes the state of the switch. In Level mode the switch state is defined by the voltage applied to the CV input (low voltage = I/O1, high voltage = I/O2) or by the state of the manual control button (not pressed = I/O1, pressed = I/O2). The modes are programmed very easily: Operating the Toggle/Level button of the program section displays the current state of each switch with the LEDs: left LED on = Toggle mode, right LED on = Level mode. Operating the manual control button of the switch in question changes the toggle/level mode while the Toggle/Level button of the program section is operated. During the programming possibly patched CV signals have to be removed as the CV signals would interfere with the manual operating buttons during the programming process.

In addition it's possible to define master/slave groups. In such a group the upper unit (= master) controls also the state of the following switches provided that they are defined as slaves. Master/slave programming is also very simple: Operating the Master/Slave button of the program section displays the current state of each switch with the LEDs: left LED on = Master, right LED on = Slave. Operating the manual control button of the switch in question changes the master/slave mode while the Master/Slave button of the program section is operated. During the programming possibly patched CV signals have to be removed as the CV signals would interfere with the manual operating buttons during the programming process.
When all 8 units are defined as master all switches are independent from each other. If for example the sequence is MSSSMSMS the control unit of the first switch also controls the switches 2, 3 and 4. The control unit of switch 5 also controls the switch 6, and the control unit of switch 7 also controls the switch 8. The current states of the slave switches are overwritten by the state of the master switch.

Technical note: To protect the electronic switches in case of an unsuitable patch (e.g. connection of two outputs) a 1k protection resistor is inserted into the O/I line of each switch. If control voltages used for VCOs are switched this may cause a small voltage drop and lead to undesired audible detuning. For this application we recommend to insert a CV buffer between A-150-8 and the VCO(s), e.g. the Buffered Multiple A-180-3 or the Precision Adder A-185-2. Integrating the buffers into the module A-150-8 was not possible because this would ruin the bidirectionality of the switches."
