Synthstrom Deluge & MPE - 4 0 Firmware Update

video upload by Too Mere

"Demonstrating the MPE functionality and making a tune with the Linnstrument to control and edit MPE on the Synthstrom Deluge."

-------

Details on the 4.0 update via the Synthstrom Audible forum:

"We're very excited today to announce the arrival of our huge 4.0 software update.

Instructional videos and downloads links are at the bottom of this spiel.

Highlights include:

Wavetable synthesis, and improved single-cycle waveform playback.
Support for MIDI Polyphonic Expression (MPE), and similarly MIDI polyphonic aftertouch. The Deluge can receive MPE from external MIDI controllers that support it, it can record this data, and the internal Deluge synths can respond to it. And this MPE data may also be output again to an external synth.
Euclidean sequencing - per row of a clip on the Deluge. This also means that now individual rows within a clip may be set to different lengths.
Sequences can be set to play in reverse, or to ping-pong.
Synths, kits and songs may be put into folders, and the user can browse these when saving and loading.
MIDI input devices (and to a limited extent output devices) may be differentiated and treated separately, so that two devices sending on the same MIDI channel won’t be confused.
Improved handling of regular MIDI pitch bend and channel pressure. Adjustable MIDI pitch bend ranges.
Sharing presets along with their audio files, with other Deluge users, is now easier.
MPE SUPPORT
This massive release makes the Deluge the first standalone hardware sequencer to offer comprehensive MPE (MIDI Polyphonic Expression) support, allowing you to record, edit and transmit expressive MPE with compatible devices. You can also use external MPE devices to get expressive with the Deluge’s internal synth/sample engine. Tip: combine with the Deluge’s multisample support to bring expression to everything!

EUCLIDEAN SEQUENCING & INDIVIDUAL ROW LENGTH
Euclidean note entry brings an entire new method of beat and melody creation to the Deluge. Coupled with the ability to now make any row within a kit, any length, this infinitely broadens the scope for new rhythmic variations and ever-evolving melodies.

You can set the length of a row, dial in how many steps you would like to play on that row (automatically divided ‘musically’), and then move those notes horizontally - this becomes not just a new way to make innovative rhythms, but an incredibly versatile performance tool.

PLAY-DIRECTIONS
If being able to set the length of a row wasn’t enough, you can now tell the Deluge what direction (forward, reverse or ping-pong) to play-back those particular notes and not only that, you can have each and every row playing a different direction. Warning: fun.

POLYPHONIC AFTERTOUCH, IMPROVED “MONO” EXPRESSION
In bringing MPE to the Deluge, we at the same time introduced support for good ol’ MIDI polyphonic aftertouch, plus you can now record both pitch bend and channel pressure (aka monophonic aftertouch) into synth, MIDI and CV clips. And, this data now stays with the clip even when you change presets or switch between clip type (e.g. from MIDI to synth etc.).

Previously, synth clips could only record pitch bend, not channel pressure, and CV clips couldn’t record either.

ADJUSTABLE BEND RANGE
The Deluge is no longer stuck with a 1-octave bend range. Now, there’s a global setting under DEFAults -> BEND to set the default bend range. This should default to 12 semitones (1 octave) for all existing users, it will default to the more normal 2 semitones for new users. Anyway, you can go ahead and change it.

WAVETABLE SYNTHESIS, AND IMPROVED SINGLE-CYCLE WAVEFORM PLAYBACK.
How about an entirely new form of synthesis? The Deluge will now support Wavetable files, Ringmod on the Deluge is also totally compatible with Wavetable, you may even put a separate wavetable in each of the two oscillators, with each of their wavetable-positions affecting the resulting sound.

The Deluge has always supported the playback of single-cycle waveforms by loading them as samples. But now, a technically superior option is for these to be played as a wavetable, as the wavetable engine is more fit for this purpose: it is more CPU-efficient, and will produce higher quality sound with less aliasing, particularly with high notes. It also allows the use of ringmod and oscillator sync. The wavetable-position parameter is not available when playing single-cycle waveforms, as there are not multiple cycles to interpolate between.

PRESET & SONG FOLDERS
Our users jumped for joy when we announced this new addition. You can now separate your 1 million presets and songs into folders to make navigation easier!

DIFFERENTIATING MIDI INPUT DEVICES
Now, the Deluge will differentiate between MIDI coming from different hosted USB devices, and MIDI into the input DIN port, and from a connected computer which is hosting the Deluge.

Let’s say you have the Deluge hosting say a Keystep via USB (and that’s through a USB hub), and you’ve actually learned all 16 channels from that Keystep to different synths on the Deluge. Well, then you could connect another USB MIDI device to your hub, and learn those 16 MIDI channels to yet another 16 synths on the Deluge. And whatever MIDI device is plugged into the Deluge’s DIN input will have its 16 channels treated as independent yet again.

IMPROVED MODULATION MATRIX
Lastly, we’ve also improved our modulation matrix! - The feature where the modulation-depth of a source-param pair (or “patch cable”) can itself be modulated by another modulation source – well, previously the Deluge could only handle doing this for one such patch-cable per synth. This limitation has now been removed, and you can do it for as many patch-cables as you want, subject to other existing limitations.

HAVE FUN!"

NOVATION Introduces PEAK UPDATE 1.2

You can find an overview video from supporting MATRIXSYNTH member, BoBeats further below.

First, the press release via Novation:

Introducing powerful new features & presets

Novation is proud and excited to announce the release of the Peak firmware 1.2 update. Firmware 1.2 adds a number of the most requested features from Peak users around the world, as well as all-new presets.

New wavetables
Massively increasing the range of Peak’s sonic palette, 43 new wavetables have been added to the Oscillator Wave menus.

Additional modulators
Peak 1.2 adds two freely assignable, non-voice-specific LFOs (bringing the total to four) to the Mod Matrix and new FX Matrix. Pitch-Bend is now also available as a modulation source, with Up (BendWhl+) and Down (BendWhl-) assignable as separate signals if required.

New Mod Matrix design
Workflow is greatly accelerated with Peak 1.2's updated Mod Matrix design, as sources and destinations are presented on the same page – no more toggling between them to make and edit assignments. And as a knock-on benefit, the Page button now enables quick access to all 16 modulation slots.

FX Mod Matrix
You demanded, Novation delivered! Peak 1.2 lets you route non-voice-specific modulation sources to Peak’s FX parameters in the new four-slot FX Mod Matrix. Now you can, for example, expand and contract a reverb with a rhythmic LFO, or automate delay time changes using an envelope.

New envelope features
Speaking of envelopes, Peak 1.2’s ADSRs sees the addition of a Hold stage (up to 500ms) and the ability to loop between the Attack and Decay stages. For many, this game-changing improvement alone will be reason enough to upgrade.

Initialise Manual Mode
Peak 1.2 gives you the option of maintaining the current positions of all knobs and sliders when the Initialise button is pressed, rather than resetting their parameters to defaults – ideal for getting instantly hands-on with new patches, and creating random ones from scratch. The previous behaviour can be reinstated in the Settings menu, of course, for those who prefer it.

Microtuning
Peak 1.2 also adds support for microtuning. 16 Tuning Tables can be edited and saved for recall within any patch, and automatic note selection makes MIDI note-to-pitch assignment a snap.

New presets
Available in Components, new Soundpacks from Patricia Wolf and GForce Software showcasing the new features of Firmware 1.2, as well as the sonic power and versatility of Peak in general.

Availability
Reaching new heights of sound design potential, Peak’s 1.2 firmware update will be available from the 19th December 2018 as a free download in the Components content manager."

New Audio Damage Quanta Granular Synthesizer

Uploaded on Jun 21, 2018 Audio Damage, Inc.

"Quanta is a ten-voice true-stereo hybrid subtractive/granular synthesizer with dual filters, four FEG (flexible EG, essentially a 99-stage totally arbitrary breakpoint generator), two FLFO (arbitrary waveshape LFO), two multi-mode filters, a virtual analog oscillator, full modulation matrix, and over 120 factory presets from yours truly [Chris Randall], Richard Devine, Joseph Fraioli, Chris Carter, and Marcus Fisher."

The iOS version will be along in approximately 2 weeks.

via Audio Damage:

HIGHLIGHTS

Granulate!
Quanta is a full-featured ten-voice true stereo granular synthesizer, with up to a hundred 1000ms grains per voice, and full control over the grain state, with direct randomization and modulation of most parameters. Drag-and-drop a sample (WAV, AIFF, Ogg, or FLAC) on to the window and go to work.

Synthesize!
With two multi-mode filters (with LP, HP, BP and notch in 2-pole and 4-pole topologies), and a "sidecar" virtual-analog oscillator and noise generator that can be used in addition to, or injected into, the grain engine, Quanta is a fully capable subtractive synth in its own right, and will work as a granular or subtractive (or both) synth without any sample at all.

Modulate!
Quanta has mod coming out its ears. First up are four of our new FEGs (Flexible Envelope Generator), a 99-point looping function generator with optional host tempo sync. Then add two arbitrary-waveshape LFOs, a multi-source sample-and-hold module, and fully user-controllable MIDI assignments, with nearly every control on the panel as a destination.

Control!
Quanta is customizable to your taste and playing style. With full MPE support, it can take advantage of the extended control set of your Linnstrument, Seaboard, Soundplane, Continuum, or other MPE controller, and support for TUN files lets you use tuning tables. The resizable Hi-DPI GUI lets you adjust the size to match your visual needs, and the cross-platform preset mechanism lets you share your creations with you.

"While exploring the mod matrix on my @Groove Synthesis 3rd Wave, I discovered that the Audio Input mod source can accept signals from a SOMA Ether (https://somasynths.com/ether/) to create a wonderfully dynamic performance controller!

Shout out to whomever introduced me to the Ether at the NAMM 2022 SOMA booth earlier this year! I've had a lot of fun with it so far. I'm sorry I lost your business card. Please reach out if you see this!

The 3rd Wave is hiding a lot more under it's hood and this is only the first juicy bit I have in mind. I'll provide some shorter demo's showing how far the modulation matrix can bend this synth into strange places. Stay tuned!"

Oberheim Matrix 12 61-Key 12-Voice Synthesizer

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"This is a USA-built Matrix-12. This is mainly of interest because if the display ever fails, there is a replacement kit for the USA-built version. Some Matrix-12's or Xpanders (the non-keyboard 6-voice version) were built in Japan, with a different board design, for which there is no display replacement that I know of.

The Matrix-12 was available with a optional pressure-sensing keyboard, but this one doesn't have it.

The power section works on all voltages worldwide (90-130VAC, switchable to 190-260, 50-60Hz).

The unit had one fault I was aware of: one voice's filter did not pass the self-tune. I had this repaired by Hayashi-san at Symplex in March 2023. As outlined on the receipt shown, he diagnosed the replacement of the voice 10 filter chip (3372, shown; I will include the original bad chip in the purchase). Finally, he did a complete test, and found some more work to do: he cleaned the bend and mod wheels, volume pot, six encoders, eight switches, and upgraded to the latest v1.6 ROMs. The unit now always passes all five self-tune tests as shown on the display quickly, even immediately after turning on."

Kilpatrick Audio Eurorack Modules, Effects Pedals and More

Kilpatrick Audio

K4815 Pattern Generator
"Eurorack CV and MIDI Pattern Generator - 20HP
As its premier offering in the modular synthesizer world, the K4815 Pattern Generator by Kilpatrick Audio packs incredible power into a small 20HP Eurorack module that offers virtually unlimited creative potential for modular players. The K4815 can produce notes and varying control voltages for a wide range of musical applications. Its unique approach to music creation is sure to have you finding new melodies and rhythms never heard before. Unlike a step sequencer, where the player picks each note in a sequence, the K4815 creates sequences by combining a scale, a visual pattern (as shown on the display) and a sequence playback motion to determine the rhythms and notes that are actually played. Other parameters can adjust the note and sequence length, as well as the transposition, direction of playback, and so on.

The K4815 is fully analog and MIDI compatible. The MIDI interface is available on an internal connector and will be compatible with the upcoming K1600 MIDI Converter from Kilpatrick Audio. (for MIDI pinouts and DIY circuit advice, contact Kilpatrick Audio) The analog connections support three inputs for connecting analog clock, and analog control of the playback direction and pattern playback reset. The CV and GATE outputs are high performance analog outputs for controlling VCOs and envelope generators. High quality 12-bit DACs ensure accurate tuning, and jumper selectable voltage offset and trimming are provided internally to allow integration with most modular equipment.

But notes are not the only thing that can be produced with the K4815. In the alternate X/Y mode, varying voltages are produced on both the CV/X OUT and GATE/Y OUT. By using the X/Y mode, the playback position creates varying voltages and MIDI control changes which can be used as a source of modulation.

The essence of any sequencer is the clock. The K4815 has a high stability internal clock which can generate a wide range of tempos. The unit also supports analog (5V) clock on the CLOCK IN connector or MIDI clock. When the internal or analog clock is used, MIDI signals are generated automatically, making the system a useful MIDI clock generator or converter.
Pattern Generation Concept

New ways of creating melodies and control signals help to break new ground in music and sound. The K4815 helps you explore new melodies and rhythms using a unique concept of generating patterns. Unlike random pattern generators or ones based on various mathematical concepts, the K4815 bases its music-making foundation on simple scales, visually-designed patterns, and intellectually-designed motions. These three elements can be controlled by the player in realtime to create an enormous variety of sounds. And it is done in a visual way that is fun to use. Everything happens on the 8x8 LED matrix, which is both a visual indicator and a conceptual view of how the system works internally. Scales, patterns and motions are all mapped to points on the matrix, which show in realtime exactly what is happening.

The K4815 concept can be thought of as three distinct layers:
* Scales - Underneath the 8x8 LED matrix are the notes which are assigned to each of the 64 points on the grid. The selected scale can be major or minor, large or small. These are selected with the TONALITY and SPAN switches. Only four choices might seem like a limitation, but what happens on the other two layers ultimately affects the rhythms and melodies that are produced.
* Patterns - Patterns are visually designed icons, symbols and patterns which define which notes will play. They are shown in the background at all times. There are 32 patterns which can be selected with the PATTERN TYPE knob. If a point on the 8x8 LED matrix is lit, the underlying scale note is active. If the playback ball lands on that point, its note will play.
* Motions - Motions define how a sequence is played. Each motion defines up to 64 steps in a sequence. Each step can land on any of the points on the 8x8 LED matrix. If a step lands on a point which is lit, a note will play. There are 64 different motions, some sequential and musically-designed, and others more abstract or geometrically-designed. By using MIDI it is possible transpose the scale, and also to start and stop motion playback with note commands, changing the K4815 into a special type of auto-arpeggiator.

Features and Specs
* Eurorack (3U) form factor - 20HP width
* 64 LED (8x8) multi-brightness grid to show patterns and playback
* Clock control via internal clock, or MIDI or analog (5V) clock

"Eurorack MIDI Converter- 12HP
The combination of MIDI and analog offers the modular synth player incredible flexibility and control. Although analog voltages are the preferred method for carrying many kinds of signals, MIDI offers powerful integration with computers and a wide variety of controllers, keyboards and other equipment. The K1600 MIDI Converter provides 10 outputs in the analog domain. Two pairs of CV and gate outputs provide high resolution note control, four trigger outputs allow analog drum modules to be used with MIDI drum machines, and the clock and reset outputs enable MIDI control over analog clock-based devices such as sequencers.
Polyphonic Control

If you are looking for a way to control two or more oscillators via MIDI for playing big fat analog chords, the K1600 can take you there. Its two CV/gate outputs can work in split keyboard or duo-phonic mode. But if you install multiple K1600s in your system, you can support 4, 6, 8 or more voices of polyphony simply by daisy-chaining the modules together. The intelligent voice-priority algorithm makes multiple units behave as one. So stop thinking of modular synthesis as monophonic... polyphony is closer than you think!
Expansion

The K1600 also acts as an expansion module for other Kilpatrick Audio modular products which support the internal MIDI header. This includes the K4815 Pattern Generator, which contains a full MIDI implementation in addition to the existing analog connections.
Features and Specs (Preliminary)

* Eurorack (3U) form factor - 12HP width
* MIDI to CV, gate, trigger and clock converter
* Provides MIDI expansion for other Kilpatrick Audio modules
* MIDI soft-thru for daisy-chaining multiple units

Moog Sub Phatty: New Machine For Living

Published on Jan 21, 2013 MoogMusicInc·222 videos

"In honor of the new Moog Sub Phatty analog synthesizer's release today, experimental multi-genre music producer, Flying Lotus, and Adult Swim veteran, Adam 'Lilfuchs' Fuchs collaborated on a short animation called Moog Sub Phatty: New Machine For Living. You can hear the new Sub Phatty analog synthesizer in Flying Lotus's original score for the animation."

"New Moog Sub Phatty Synthesizer Sets New Standard for Analog Sound Design

ASHEVILLE, NC – January 21, 2013 – Moog Music is proud to introduce the Sub Phatty analog synthesizer, a 25 full-size key, 31 knob production instrument that melds the soul and functionality of vintage analog synthesizers with new and unique sound design tools. Building on the tradition of Moog’s highly successful Phatty family, the Sub Phatty grinds and screams with a uniquely aggressive voice — making it the new standard for synth bass, analog percussion, and a wide range of sound design applications.

The engineers at Moog Music have reimagined the Sub Phatty’s sound engine. The instrument features two variable waveshape oscillators that perform with extreme clarity and accuracy while requiring almost no warm-up time. Users can simply power up, dial in settings, and put their fingers to work on the keys to summon crisp and detailed waveforms with vibrant sound that brims with high-frequency harmonic content, yet stays true to the rich sonic density that has become synonymous with Moog synthesizers.

“We set out to design the grittiest Moog synth ever, one that still offers all of the great sound and flexibility that Moog synthesizers are known for, but that also really has teeth,” said Mike Adams, President of Moog Music. “One of the great advantages of the Sub Phatty is its ability to conjure aggressive sounds that cut through a dance mix, stand out on-stage, or burn up the studio. We think that everyone from producers and sound designers to DJs and synthesists will have a blast using it.”

The Sub Phatty’s filter includes the transformative new Multidrive circuit, a unique combination of OTA distortion and FET drive, which serves as the sparkplug in the instrument’s powerful sound. At low settings, Multidrive adds warmth and width; when pushed, it delivers a screaming snarl that is highly reactive to resonance, waveshape, and oscillator level.

Users can access a total of 16 definable presets via the 4x4 preset matrix on the Sub Phatty’s front panel. This matrix also doubles as a control panel for the instrument’s subcutaneous nerve center — users can select filter poles, set pitch bend amounts, toggle between legato glide modes, and more. These functions can also be accessed via the included Sub Phatty standalone/plugin editor.

The configuration of the Sub Phatty’s mixer section allows users to easily determine, at any given moment, which sources overdrive the filter and which simply pass through it. The mixer section further hosts controls for a square wave sub oscillator; those operating the Sub Phatty can utilize this tool as a third oscillator for added depth, or to craft their own customized incarnations of monstrous Moog bass. Also in the mixer section is a noise generator voiced to deliver rich, punchy low-frequency content, designed for analog percussion and sound effects.

In honor of the Sub Phatty’s release, experimental multi-genre music producer, Flying Lotus, and Adult Swim veteran, Adam Fuchs collaborated on a psychedelic short animation called Moog Sub Phatty: New Machine For Living. Flying Lotus’s original score was made primarily with the Sub Phatty synthesizer and dynamically shows off its bold sound. This unique animation can be viewed on Moog’s website at www.moogmusic.com/animation.
The Sub Phatty brings a fearless new voice to the Moog family of synthesizers. With its streamlined interface and dynamic sound design flexibility, this new synth fuses an unparalleled connection between human & machine, opening the door to unprecedented sonic exploration.

Audio Damage Quanta Granular Synth for iOS Now Available

iTunes: Quanta Granular Synth

"!EARLY BIRD SPECIAL! Quanta is US$7.99 until Sept. 1st!!

Quanta is a six-voice granular synthesizer for iOS11+ in both standalone (with Inter-App Audio) and AudioUnit V3 formats. Quanta for iPad is fully compatible with the full version of Quanta for macOS and Windows; visit audiodamage.com for a PDF manual, audio samples, and video demonstrations.

Quanta will work on any iPad that can run iOS 11, but keep in mind that it is a feature-heavy desktop quality synthesizer, and would prefer a 2017/2018 iPad, or an iPad Pro. If you're experiencing CPU issues on lower-end machines with the standalone, try changing the main display to FEG or FLFO, which don't require redrawing and which will be significantly lower in CPU usage.

Oberheim OB-X

images via this auction
"The OB-X was released in 1979 and was the first programmable polyphone synth from Oberheim. It's the direct successor to the famous SEM-based four/eight voice. The main point is, that the OB-X has the same discrete filter design as the SEM-modules - there are no curtis filter ICs as the followers OBXa and OB-8 got. But the filter is not as flexible as the SEM-one (which were multi mode) - it has a fix 12dB lowpass setting. When you open the belt, you will see boards with tons of electronics. Every voice has got it's own circuit board - they can be removed separately. A maximum of eight voice boards can be installed - mine has got six. For stereo use, every board's output is assigned to a pan pot. Every voice board has two VCOs with saw and pulse. The VCOs can be synced and crossmodulated (you won't find crossmodulation in the followers OBXa and OB-8) - so there can be generated strange and metallic waves. There's a great polyphonic portamento section, an autotune function and a hold button (which can be used as a chord memory as I found out!). Then we got the described filter section and two ADSRs for filter and amp. The sections can be modulated with the Oberheim-typical modulation matrix. An LFO with quare, triangle and S/H can modulate the LFO pitch, the filter cutoff and the pulse width (separate for VCO1 and 2). There are 32 memory locations to save your sounds. Of course you can edit programs any time - just push the edit button and turn the knobs as you like. There's a casette interface to load and save memory banks. On the backside you find some goodies: a CV/Gate interface to control voice 1 and a filter control jack, where I've connected an external potentiometer to modulate the filter cutoff without any stages - which sounds absolutely great. This direct and precise cutoff control you will never ever experience with a software synth. You can really navigate to a particular partial tone and hear it growing louder until you got it exactly! What I learned to appreciate furthermore are the Oberheim-typical levers. They allow you to bend the tones of the Oberheim like you bend a guitar string - the levers are very responsive. It's easy to bend up a note and modulate it at the same time. I admit freely: I'm not a fan of wheels - I like better the korg joystick. Unfortunately, the Oberheim-concept has been abandoned."

4ms Pedals Available at Big City Music

via the Big City Music blog. You might remember the circuit bent Bend Matrix pictured here from these videos.

"You can clock the internal sequence via MIDI and you can also use it as a MIDI sequencer. The BendMatrix also works as an audio sequencer, sort of like an automated mixer with four outputs. There are also some really cool performance controllers like the Strobe, Arp, Gloob and Random knobs."

Below is the NoiseSwash noise generator and a signal processor.

Remember, you can always find the Big City Music on Ebay link under the More Stuff section on this site for their current listings.
