The Crow Hill Company Announces Availability of SMALL STRING GESTURES

The best string sound I have ever heard!! video upload by The Crow Hill Company

Press release follows:

TCHC announces availability of SMALL STRING GESTURES as toolkit to dial up musical personality with intimate interpretative band behind each key

EDINBURGH, UK: having ‘softly’ set out its software stall late last year with a low-key launch of STRING MURMURATIONS that saw decades of award-winning experience in the music tech sector and at the composing coalface distilled into an easy- to-use, intuitive, and comprehensive sample-based virtual instrument plug-in and GUI (Graphical User Interface) introducing the cutting-edge concept of Gestures (whereby an orchestra interpreting its user’s composition and making it into music and art lies behind every key played), music-making community tools-maker The Crow Hill Company is proud to announce availability of SMALL STRING GESTURES as the latest incarnation of that concept — creating a set of tools where individual instruments and the playing style, strengths, and frailties of the intimate interpretative (3, 3, 3, 3) band behind each key are available for the user to dial up the personality of their composition, created from a collection of master recordings that have been mixed and edited into a sample-based virtual instrument plug-in with a GUI and preset browser that are as easy on the eye as they are in use — as of January 26…

An armada of strings can create awe — an epic tidal wave of human emotion, of scale, of wonder. While STRING MURMURATIONS makes it easy and intuitive to make music that sounds human thanks to three distinct palettes of expressions, each designed to feel like the user is collaborating with an orchestra of real musicians, creating endless harmonic possibilities that inspire from the moment a key is touched, sometimes music-makers need it to be intimate, truthful, personal, human — hence The Crow Hill Company creating SMALL STRING GESTURES as a set of tools where individual instruments and the playing style, strengths, and frailties of the instrumentalists involved are available for the user to dial up the personality of their composition. Cue humanity, in other words.

With this in mind, The Crow Hill Company specifically selected a 3, 3, 3, 3 — three Violin 1, three Violin 2, three Violas, and three Cellos — band size that ensured its sampling style brought every individual within that ensemble into beautifully detailed and intimate focus for SMALL STRING GESTURES. This toolset is provided with a different lens and aperture to play through.

The Crow Hill Company collectively likes to keep things moving, so while this latest incarnation of its Gestures concept is very much related to one of those distinct palettes of expression available in STRING MURMURATIONS, it is worth highlighting hysteresis — dictionary-defined as the phenomenon in which the value of a physical property lags behind changes in the effect causing it, such as when magnetic induction lags behind the magnetising force, for instance — in relation to SMALL STRING GESTURES. Getting in on the act of creating sample libraries involves always asking the instrumentalists involved to perform musical material that is incredibly easy to play in order for the end result to always be ‘together’. That is fine for programming or composing simple stuff since that would sound true to real life, but it becomes harder, however, for players to remain totally locked to each other’s tuning or timekeeping when playing more difficult passages. Pure sound becomes more problematic as a result — reduced fundamental meaning more character, which is why a lot of sample-based music used in films, games, and TV sounds ‘characterless’. Clearly the samples involved therein lack hysteresis as they were easy to play, yet playing something difficult with them does not sound natural, real, or human. Indeed, it is fair to say that what makes musicians ‘hysterical’ is speed — faster playing means looser playing that is less in time and also less in tune; reach — the wider the gap between the notes, the further they have to reach, resulting in less perfectly in tune playing; and pitch — the higher a player plays, the harder it becomes as it involves more intense accuracy from string players performing on fretless instruments.

It is for this reason that The Crow Hill Company decided to get its players to perform the hard stuff — not compositions, but mere fragments, which is why anyone working with SMALL STRING GESTURES will not feel like they are playing phrases; instead it is rather like having a string band under their fingertips. For Gestures are the very real sound of reach and performance. But by not giving the musicians behind SMALL STRING GESTURES simple stuff to play prevented them from getting bored. Better still, SMALL STRING GESTURES users are accessing the sound that musicians make when they are smiling... hysterically!

It is also fair to say, therefore, that the effect of hysteresis on a large string section — including that which was involved in the creation of STRING MURMURATIONS, for instance — is a silky, blurry sound. An audible example of this might be the fast string runs in John Williams’ ‘Hedwig’s Theme’ from Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone — ditto the closing bars of ‘Mars, the Bringer of War’ from Holst’s The Planets suite. Saying that, though, there are times when music-makers do not need awe, epic, and huge scale in pursuit of their compositional craft, but instead seek something more intimate, more personal, more human. The theory that led to SMALL STRING GESTURES revolved around if The Crow Hill Company could get a string band small enough then the impact of hysteresis would not be a musical blurring, but rather an exposure of each player involved in its creation — their own style of bowing and vibrato, their own fragilities to help the user’s audience connect more with the human nature of their music.

Making that happen meant designing SMALL STRING GESTURES to make its users approach composing and making music from a totally new angle, one where it feels like there are musicians at their fingertips — not samples. SMALL STRING GESTURES is a collection of master recordings — made by world-class producers and engineers at Glasgow’s Clockwork Studios, a new custom-designed scoring stage for the UK comprising of a large hall for full orchestra (up to 80 players) with a balanced and focused sound ideal for modern orchestral recording, as well as a smaller dry space in Studio B (up to 15 players), with the world-class Scottish Session Orchestra playing some of the finest instruments through the finest microphones and mic pre-amps — that have been mixed and edited into a sample-based virtual instrument plug-in with a GUI and a preset browser that are as easy on the eye as they are in use. Ultimately, it works within anyone’s favourite DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) with 25 presets — presented as six Gestures, four Longs, 10 Presets, and five Bonus — and additional hand-crafted Selects designed by The Crow Hill Company team. There are three mix-ready stereo signals — namely, CLOSE, WIDE, and AMBIENT, as well as unique REVERB controls and a granular effects processor.

Duly designed by professional composers with the sonic connoisseur in mind, The Crow Hill Company’s collective conclusion certainly rings true, stating, “We’re a small team and have worked hard to make everything as intuitive as possible.” Put it this way: with SMALL STRING GESTURES it is perfectly possible to make music that sounds intimate, truthful, personal, human! Hysteresis, of course, comes into play here, albeit with the desired effect — exposure of each player involved in its creation.

Clearly, then, big messages come in small packages when it comes to working with the diminutive-sized SMALL STRING GESTURES as another easy-to-use and intuitive virtual instrument plug-in from The Crow Hill Company, one which is also easy on the wallet for those wishing to step into this new world of gesture-based sampling.

SMALL STRING GESTURES is available to purchase — as an AAX-, AU-, VST-, and VST3-format-compatible sample-based virtual instrument plug-in comprising 8 GB of uncompressed material (compressed losslessly to 4.4 GB) that loads directly into a DAW — for £49.00 GBP (including VAT) directly from The Crow Hill Company here: https://thecrowhillcompany.com/small-string-gestures

Lunar - Ambient Noise 🎄 (Arp 2600 m // Waldorf M + Red Panda Particle 2 // Arturia Keystep Pro)

video upload by 2-Minute Warning

"For the last video of 2023, I really wanted to spotlight the raw sound of the amazin ARP 2600 M 🤩
So throughout the whole track, you'll only hear the sound coming directly from the ARP 2600 M without any external effects, though I did use its onboard spring reverb (+ a bit of EQ/comp where used for mixing purposes).
Contrary to my previous (which was the first) video featuring the ARP which was an uptempo track, no beats or kick here! Only the ARP and the Waldorf M (+ Particle granular delay).
The same track from the Keystep Pro is sequencing both synths.

As you can see, I use some patching in this one for the ARP:
 - The VCF output is going through its preamp input to make the distorted sound you gradually hear (it's being played in parallel of the dry sound coming out from VCF output)
 - I also used the LFO to modulate the filter and pulse width of oscillator 2
 - I did did some patching as well, in order to play portamento with one of the ARP's oscillator (using the voltage processor "Lag Time")

* Hardware used *

// SYNTH:
 - Korg ARP 2600 M (semi modular analog synth) - RAW sound
 - Waldorf M (8-voice hybrid digital and analog wavetable) + Red Panda Particle v2 (digital granular delay)

// SEQUENCER:
 - Arturia Keystep Pro"

2MGT METAMUSIC GENERATIVE TOOLS

This one was sent in via Brian Comnes who had the following to say (links will take you to more info):

"Here's some stocking stuffers for Christmas.

Boris Kovalev has been making ambient sound tools for over a decade. Back in 2011 I was messing with his AMBITRON and PSYBOX synths and having a lot of fun. see here

Well lately by chance I came across his latest work at 2MGT and I have to say, these are some nice tools for those of us interested in the ambient side of synthesis. Yes they are software, no real knobs to twist but they do sound really nice. Best part they are donation/freeware. I'd say they are as nice as anything Giorgio SanCristoforo is doing and getting $20 a pop for.

The UIs do take a little bit of initial head scratching to decipher and attain competence, but they offer nice eye candy to work with compared to say the current sparse dials only ones popular today.

Granular Synthesis and Generative Ambient Tutorial on the Korg Volca FM2

video upload by Dylan Ferno

"A simple turorial on how to make granular synthesis like patches as well as generative sequences on the Korg Volca FM2.

Granular Description:

1 Set the BPM to its max (600)
2. Adjust the arpeggiator speed to your liking (up to 12 faster than 600 BPM)
3. The maximum BPM is technically 7,200
4. Add lots of reverb

Generative Description:

1. Put the Arpeggiator in Rand1, 2 or 3 mode
2. Rand3 is the most random (notes can play randomly in 3 octaves above or below the root note)
3. In Rand3 mode, the chance of a 16 note pattern repeating is less than 1 in 30 trillion.

Ambient using a Technics WSA1

video upload by Christian's Sonic Spaces

"This is ambient music with my Technics WSA1. While I am in progress to programm a bank of 64 amazing custom patches, I also start create the first song with it.

I used for the recording the following FX chain:
Pigtronix Echolution 2 Deluxe - GFI System Specular Reverb 2. Depending on the recorded track some FX are deactivated

The signal went through a Presonus StudioLive 16.0.2 into the PC via USB for recording. To create the complete song I recorded consecutively several stereo tracks, while a specially prepared track exported an run through a tasty chips electronics GR-1 for granular time streching. The final song was then mastered with a bit EQ and compression on some tracks and iZotope Ozone on the master track."

Introducing Beetlecrab.audio - Makers of Vector and Tempera

via Beetlecrab.audio

Dear friends,

as hot summer months are slowly passing by, our Prague workshop has been pretty busy working on all axes. Since there's now two products to care for, there's more things to do, more PCB wiring and more code to siphon through, but there's a silver lining in that when we're too deep in one thing and need some respite, there's always something to do on the other :)

We are Beetlecrab.audio

Another thing we're slowly dealing with is the inscrutable situation about our branding, which we have gotten ourselves into. Vector, VectorSynth Tempera, TemperaSynth Vector, Vectora Synth Temper. It's a mess. To get out of all this confusion we decided to adopt an umbrella for both existing and new upcoming projects: beetlecrab.audio. We couldn't quite figure out a suitable name but many of you started using this, so let's go with it. For now the website is a simple crossroad and will be improved over time. Both Vector and Tempera newsletters will be merged into one at some point, so if you're subscribed to both you may have received this email twice. Please ignore the other.

Now to the actual news. There's two parts here -- an update about how Tempera production is going, and announcement of the new Vector v2.9.1 firmware update. Let's start with -

Tempera Production Update

New upgrades

There's a few changes made to the hardware that we're comfortable sharing, now that they are verified. First, a great quality of life improvement: the TRS MIDI sockets are compatible both with Type A and Type B wiring ! This means that you don't have to worry and fiddle with unmarked adapters -- both types will work.

Next, we were still a bit unhappy with the powder coat finish of the metal case. It's difficult to get right: each attempt at different color and paint structure takes a lot of time to test and verify because at least a piece of metal needs to be painted and sent to us for examination, and it takes even longer because of course the metal case manufacturer doesn't have all the paints in stock, and sometimes they have to buy a whole bottle just to use a few drops. A sample palette exists but as we already learned with Vector, these give some idea but in the end look nothing like what you think on the actual metal, on the bends, crevices and so on.

Having said all that, I think we found and verified a finish that we're really happy with . It's less glossy and has a finer and more granular (hah) structure. It's very nice to the touch and I think looks much better. See for yourself, how the light interacts with the old vs new powder coat on top. Noticeable are also the beautifully laser etched graphics. (Tempera in old finish, plate on top in new finish. The light is angled in such a way to highlight the grain, the new finish is in fact even blacker than the old.)

Late Night Ambient Soundtrack (Osmose, Microcosm, Nightsky, GR-1, OB-6, Matriarch)

video upload by NGC0 Music

"Couldn't sleep last night, so I've assembled a few toys and recorded this.
You'll hear mainly the Osmose going through the Microcosm + Nightsky (My only FX chain), the Rhodes through a Chase Bliss Blooper pedal (in delay mode), the Moog Matriarch (bass), and OB-6 (dreamy EP sound). I've then sent the full mix back to the Tasty Chips GR-1, did some granular tweaks, and recorded the outcome back into the main mix."

5 Jams with Cursus Iteritas wavetable oscillator from Noise Engineering

video upload by Noise Engineering

"Check out these 5 Jams using the Cursus Iteritas dynamically generated wavetable oscillator using orthogonal functions. We hope these jams will inspire you to think of new ways to patch.

0:05 Jam 1
0:48 Jam 2
1:38 Jam 3
2:08 Jam 4
2:51 Jam 5

More info on Cursus Iteritas: https://bit.ly/3jRt38o

Jam 1: We're adjusting the Cursus Iteritas' Fold and Structure controls while sending the signal out through the Electus Versio. The BIA with the kick.

Jam 2: We're adding in CV and pitch inputs on the CI one at a time, then adjusting the Center control to change the harmonic used to build the waveform. The Clep Diaz is adjusting the release on the Sinc Bucina. Mix is then sent through Electus Versio for the clocked reverb.

Jam 3: In this ambient patch, we've added a pitch input and 4 CV inputs to the CI, then we stepped aside and watched it play this beautiful generative journey.

Jam 4: It doesn't take much to make some exciting timbres out of the Cursus Iteritas. It plays very well here with Mimetic Digitalis, Fractio Solum, Horologic Solum, Loquelic Iteritas Percido, Bin Seq, and Imitor Versio. The Sinc Bucina shapes the sounds from Cursus, and the mix is sent through Electus Versio for some clocked reverb.

Jam 5: This time we're sending gates and modulation through every CV input on the Cursus Iteritas. The result is a huge variety of harmonic sounds and timbres. Then we follow that up with some Melotus Versio granular processing.
