ARPchives LIVE Special Birthday Edition "In His Words"

video upload by Alan R. Pearlman Foundation

Features the ARP 2600 assembly line. Note the Blue Marvin / Blue Meanie.

"(NOTE: These videos are for historical preservation and EDUCATIONAL purposes only. )

We are very excited to release 'The Lost ARP Tapes,' recently discovered footage that had been buried in decades worth of television. Join us Tuesday, June 7th on our YouTube channel to watch them live and celebrate Alan Pearlman’s birthday.

We will be having several releases. featuring footage from the 1970s of demos, two different ARP factories, Alan R. Pearlman, Phil Dodds, David Friend, David Frederick, and Tom Piggot! Not seen in 45+ years!

Included in these sessions will be other rare footage of Alan R. Pearlman speaking in later years (not in any other documentary) as well as contemporary interviews with ARP employees"

And via Dina Pearlman in the ARP Foundation mailing list:

Today is my father's birthday

Alan R. Pearlman would have been 97 today! Because he was born in 1925, he remembered the George Washington Bridge being built, the Great Depression, was a World War II vet.. he worked on the early NASA projects, saw the first person on the moon. And he built one of the most famous synthesizers in the world.

With celebrating my father's birthday we also recognize our future—the kids who love their STEM classes, the musicians who have aspirations to make music, or the filmmakers who wish to make soundtracks.

This summer we are trying to raise a minimum of $15,000 for the following projects:

ARPs for ALL - insurance, restoration and repair of instruments

ARPchives including scanning, digitizing and licensing rights to rare photos. See also: Google's Music Makers and Machines!

Our first residency at ARPs for ALL (estimated $10,000 for housing, transportation and engineering assistance) Grantwriter(s)

We will also be holding our Fall Synthposium and Fundraiser 2022: A Fifty Year ARP Odyssey!

READ the Synthposium Press Release

We hope you will consider making a tax deductible donation to The Alan R Pearlman Foundation

My father was a mentor. In his tradition, The Alan R. Pearlman Foundation is dedicated to preserving his legacy to inspire others, and to provide them with the tools to do so with our ARPs for ALL projects as well as our ARPchives that include Hot off the Press!

This year we have located some lost ARP tapes premiering on YouTube later today [above] (more coming later this summer) We have also located some rare photographs, but we have to purchase them, so this is part of our goals for this latest fundraiser.

via this auction

"The rarest of the rare… A fully restored (by Phil Cirocco) Arp 2600c / 3604c. It works as-factory, and will be delivered in perfect working order to its new home.

If you are looking at this, you’ve likely heard about the Teledyne chips… If not - this has them. None of the suitcase versions do to my knowledge - and the sound that made the Arp 2600 so ubiquitous is largely in those chips… This sounds utterly incredible, and yes - different to the later model 2600’s and very different to the late model Korg and Behringer 2600’s though they make a decent substitute!"

Prophet Rev2 Soundset VCM ++ Volume 2 Patches

video upload by Creative Spiral

Patch list below.

"VCM ++ Volume 2 is here! This sound set takes advantage of the latest O.S. update for Prophet Rev2, with tons of new Vintage Voice Modeling Sounds, Binaural Stereo Stacks and Advanced Motion Patches. Available on Sellfy here:

VINTAGE VOICE COMPONENT MODELING (VCM)
A few years back I did a bunch of research and analysis on vintage synths from the 1970s through 2000s, to understand what gives classic/vintage synths their lush character and organic warmth. I published info on my findings at http://www.VoiceComponentModeling.com, and released a patch bank for the Prophet Rev 2 (as well as other soundsets for other synths in the past few years). This new soundset (VCM ++ Volume 2) is the latest release, harnessing the techniques I've been working on the past few years.

LATEST O.S. for PROPHET REV2
This sound set takes advantage of the latest Prophet Rev2 firmware released a few months ago, which fixed some issues with the Gated Sequencer Key Stepping, along with several other minor bugs. This O.S. (1.1.5.9.9) is the latest stable release, and highly recommended for usage with these patches. They would technically work with previous O.S. versions, but not sound as good. Go get the latest O.S. for free on the official Sequential Rev2 forum. Note: It's technically a beta, but with Seq, their Betas are the same as release versions after they've been out a few months. They are the most stable, bug free versions.

NEW CAPABILITIES WITH UPDATED O.S.
Now that the Key Stepping of the Gated Sequencer works fully on stacked patches, there are some new capabilities that the Prophet Rev2 has.

Firstly, it can now pull off stacked/layered patches with Vintage Voice Modeling on both layers, with correct voice stepping. This allows for huge sounding vintage stacks, emulating double tracked or binaural stereo sounds, with tons of organic, vintage character through per voice modeling (VCM).

Second, the excellent gated sequencer / modulation sequencer can now be used in key stepping mode for stacked/layered patches. This provides the Rev2 with incredible syncopated motion capabilities, unmatched by virtually any other synth on the market. By combining two layers of Arpeggio motion, with strategically planned Osc Frequency Modulations, Cutoff jumps and other modulations, you can create incredibly rich animated motion that can be played up and down the keybed in any key. The resulting patterns that are created are extremely unique, and by targeting octaves, perfect fifths, and perfect fourths, along with staggered timing/reset points, you can create semi-procedural, intelligent melodies and multi osc harmonies that respond to your playing.

Third, the above two capabilities unlocked with the latest O.S. can be mixed/matched. For example, there are many patches in the soundset and demo, which have a pad, brass or string sound with vintage voice modeling on one layer, combined with an advanced motion arp on the second layer, for rich motion patches, with a fundamental organic, vintage style based underneath.

Korg 01/W - teaser and first contact

video upload by synthlegends

"New arrival of my new bargain for EUR 120 , a Korg 01/W fd, wich is the second Rompler and Workstation from Korg after the M1. The 01/W was very popular even under professional musicians like RIk Wakeman, Tony Bannks or Phil Collins. Even though it has no resonance on the filter, it is quit interesting because of the waveshaping section, with wich you can add some character and sonic pepper on the sound. I really love this new instrument and I exchanged the display to get more fun.

No processing in this audio file, no FX but those internal of the 01/W. It s just the raw audio file recorded stereo directly into the DAW."

video upload by Piotr Garbaczonek

"Thanks for watching!

EXTREMELY RARE!!! C.M.S. MR-15 ModRack Modular System at Berklee (Piece showing its possibilities) Every sound in this piece was recorded using the C.M.S. MR-15 ModRack Modular System, including drums and bass. It is not a performance, I recorded individual layers using different patches and only recorded one layer performed. All the other videos you see are of different patches as well as angles of this beautiful synth for your viewing pleasure.

If you want to find out more about the maker of the synth as well as his company, I will have both listed below. Phil's instruments are crafted with utmost precision, and it was so much fun to be able to use it for a few hours.

THE ARP 2600...
To call the ARP 2600 an influential synthesizer is a grand understatement. When first produced in 1971, the 2600 presented musicians with the power of a full-fledged modular synthesizer, but with "normalled" connections allowed anyone to play without knowing how to program. It was educational, powerful, and flexible... And it sounded phenomenal. The 2600 can produce amazing sonic textures, leads, basses, sound effects, and just about any other sound you can imagine.

Early adopters such as Edgar Winter, Pete Townshend, Joe Zawinul and Stevie Wonder helped popularize the 2600 in a musical context. Stevie even had a customized 2600 with the controls labeled in Braille. The 2600 is also famously known as the voice of Star Wars' R2-D2, being played by sound designer Ben Burtt.

And with the reintroduction of the 2600 by Korg, as well as Antonus and 2600 VSTs such as Time wARP, Cherry Audio's CA2600 and Arturia, a whole new generation of musicians can now experience the endless possibilities of this incredible synthesizer. LEARN MORE"

Introducing Capt'n BIG-O and Mr. Phil Ter by Cre8audio

video upload by Patchwerks Seattle

In this video resident expert Matthew Piecora (aka EZBOT) shares Cre8audio's newest modules: Capt 'n BIG-O and Mr. Phil Ter. Capt'n BIG-O is a fully analog oscillator built from the ground up to sound uniquely warm and huge. The oscillator also sports a wavefolder and a drive circuit, both of which you can route external signals into. Mr Phil Ter is a classic transistor ladder filter with a built in VCA and envelope generator. Along with these two new modules Cre8audio also released a two tier all wood rack stand for their popular Nifty Cases.

"What if your filter module also had a VCA and an envelope generator? Would a name like Mr. Phil Ter be a good name for it? Probably not right? Well, we at Cre8audio never claimed to be marketing geniuses (except for our jerk marketing person, but we rarely listen to them).

Anyway, check out Mr. Phil Ter, or 'Phil' as we affectionately call it. It's 12hp of filter, VCA, and envelope generator for all your sound manipulation needs."

Sequential Joins The Focusrite Group — A Message From Dave Smith

video by Sequential

"It’s with great excitement that I announce that Sequential is joining the Focusrite Group of music and audio brands.

We're now part of a family made up of some of the best and brightest companies in the music instruments and pro audio industries: Focusrite, Focusrite Pro, Martin Audio, Optimal Audio, ADAM Audio, Novation and Ampify Music. We’re in good company!

But don't worry — we’re not going anywhere. It’s business as usual for us and we'll be a separate entity from the other brands in the group. I’ll continue to lead our engineering and product development and work with the Sequential design team into the future. If anything, I'll have more time to make amazing synths!

- Dave Smith"

And the official press release:

Focusrite PLC Acquires Sequential® in Landmark Industry Development

Legendary Synth Brand Founded by Dave Smith Joins Focusrite Group

San Francisco, CA and High Wycombe, UK — April 27th 2021 — In a joint statement, Focusrite Group and Sequential LLC today announced that Focusrite plc, a leading global creator of music and audio hardware and software products, has acquired Sequential LLC, the respected American synthesizer manufacturer led by legendary electronic instrument designer and Grammy® winner Dave Smith.

Both companies stand to benefit from the synergy created by the acquisition. The Focusrite Group will add the venerable Sequential line of instruments to its already-impressive portfolio of products, which includes the acclaimed Focusrite, Focusrite Pro, Martin Audio, Optimal Audio, ADAM Audio, Novation, and Ampify brands. Sequential will benefit from greater resources to expand its global markets and future R&D efforts.

Sequential’s Dave Smith said, “With Focusrite, we’ve found an ideal home and a perfect cultural and technological fit. Phil Dudderidge and his team have a long history of quality, vision, and focus on what musicians and audio professionals really want. We’re excited to join such an industry powerhouse and contribute to our mutual success. I expect great things.”

Sequential has been a leading force in the resurgent popularity of analog synthesizers over the last decade. Its instruments, which include the Prophet® 5 Rev4 polyphonic synth, Pro 3® hybrid monosynth, and Prophet X Samples + Synthesis keyboard, are known for their versatility, ease of use, and excellence of sound. They are a mainstay of performing and recording artists and can be seen and heard on countless stages and recordings.

Focusrite Founder Phil Dudderidge commented: “We’re excited and pleased to add Sequential’s instruments and pedigree to Focusrite Group’s portfolio of world-class audio and music production tools. Dave Smith’s history as an innovator speaks for itself. From his creation of the world’s first fully programmable polysynth, the Prophet 5, to his co-invention of MIDI, Dave has literally changed the world of music several times. We’re looking forward to continuing his history of innovation and expanding the global market for Sequential’s instruments.”

Under the terms of the agreement, Sequential has become a wholly owned subsidiary of Focusrite plc. Sequential’s day-to-day operations and product development remain unchanged and will continue to be guided by Dave Smith and his team.

Tim Carroll, CEO of Focusrite Group, remarked, “Sequential is a premium analogue synth brand with a big stake in music creation. The products are exceptional and the company is run extremely well, and the passion of the people at Sequential aligns perfectly with our Focusrite Group ethos. It’s tremendously exciting to be able to bring Sequential into the Focusrite family, further the incredible journey that Dave Smith started, and keep growing together.”

via Sequential

And via Novation:

Legendary synth brand Sequential joins the family

Sequential and Novation will grow together under the same parent company.

We’re over the moon to announce that our parent company, Focusrite plc, has acquired Sequential, the synth brand founded and led by legendary synth designer and Grammy winner, Dave Smith.

If you’re new to the name Sequential, you’ll definitely have heard the synths: Dave Smith is the pioneer that designed the world’s first fully programmable polysynth, the classic Prophet® 5, and he co-invented MIDI, which transformed electronic production and changed musical history. Today, countless artists still count on Sequential instruments to bring life and an undeniably rich and organic feeling to their musical creations, spanning every genre.

Before your mind goes wild conceiving the ultimate Novation x Sequential product mashup, it’s safe to say that Sequential and Novation will continue to operate independently, as separate entities under the Focusrite Group umbrella. Dave Smith will remain at the helm of Sequential, leading engineering, product development and mentorship of Sequential’s new breed of designers.

So, it’s business as usual, and we’re extremely excited to grow together, inspire each other, and together fuel the future of forward-thinking music!

"SIRIUS - CHICAGO BULLS THEME SONG": THE ALAN PARSONS PROJECT Mini Cover On Korg Prophecy Solo Synth

Microflat

"This video will demo the legendary 3-octave Korg Prophecy solo synthesizer (25 years old) by use of four default patches in a mini cover of The Alan Parsons Project's major 1982 hit "Sirius" from the superb album "Eye in the Sky". A great instrumental song that NBA basketball legends Chicago Bulls used as their theme song back in the day when Michael Jordan was the central force.

I used patch 'A20 Studio Mog 2' for the intro bass, 'B21 Clean Fuzz!' for the first lead pattern, "B45 Trance Arpegg!" for the second lead pattern and 'B36 Re-Bong Strings' bass support. Phew, almost like a Jordan, Pippin and Rodman arrangement by Phil Jackson. With a twist of Minor Key.

Video clips were recorded in 4K (60 fps) on a Panasonic Lumix GH5 and edited in Adobe Rush. Audio was recorded in 96 KHz 24 bit on a Solid State Logic 2+ thunderbolt 3 audio interface straight into Propellerhead Reason 9. FX like a bit of reverb, echo and mastering was added in post-production in Adobe Audition."

New Cherry Audio DCO-106 - Juno-106 Software Emulation

Exploring DCO-106 with Phil Bennett (Starship)

Cherry Audio

"The new DCO-106 has arrived!

Recreating the sound of a classic synthesizer is no easy task. DCO-106 lovingly recreates the unique sonic footprint of one the most iconic 80’s polysynths in exhaustive detail, while adding modern features for massively expanded creativity.

The DCO-106 is both easy to understand and powerful to explore, creating a massive array of sonic landscapes, cutting lead sounds, warm and hazy pads, punchy synthetic electro drums, and far more.

Gorilla on a Synth

This one is in via Phil A

"Couldn’t resist before sending the ape off as a birthday present. As you can probably see it’s perched on an MS2000B (black-blue instead of the steel-blue of MS2k, + vocoder mic jack and some extra sounds), which is above a Polaris II (which as far as I can tell is functionally the same as the original Polaris other than having menus & shortcuts silkscreened in the back right corner, and originally coming with a 100VAC power supply for use in Japan)."

Arp 2600 mk3 Black and Orange

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"Excellent condition ARP 2601 with its matching 3620 keyboard. Outside of minor white spots on the keyboard lid (not the keyboard itself, as shown on pics) this Arp is in beautiful condition. Its electronic condition is matching the cosmetics: it was thoroughly serviced in 2014 by Phil Cirocco at CMS Discrete Synthesizers and has not needed any service since then. All functions work to specs. Phil Cirrocco is the acknowledged expert in ARP service and repair.

The original owner made two modifications to the original specs:

1) On the keyboard control panel there is a small red toggle switch in the upper right corner and a red momentary push button next to the vibrato sliders. With the switch in the “off” position the LFO/vibrato controls work in standard fashion. When the switch is in the “on” position the vibrato delay is replaced by push button activation. Pushing the button engages the LFO/vibrato depth settings instantly. This allows for expressive use of vibrato while playing.
2) There are two additional jacks on the lower left corner of the console, and one additional jack on the keyboard control panel next to the connector cable. These allow for an optional ground cable (included) to connect the chassis grounds between the keyboard and console. In some studio situations this improved pitch stability. It is entirely optional."
