Moog Subharmonicon Ghost Ships Ambient Patch

I've decided to devote the next month to really delving into this beguiling little synth in hopes of learning at least some of its quirks and secrets.

"In this video I'm playing a little synthesizer cover of the Grizzly Bear song 'Sleeping Ute' with the Vermona Perfourmer Mk2. They've always been one of my favorite bands, with Daniel Rossen also being one of my all-time favorite musicians.

I programmed a sequence that I was sending into the first 3 oscillators, while the 4th one plays the melody. I really like creating those spooky/ghost type sounds with the Perfourmer, although they're quite a pain to mix because they hardly have any good frequency content."

A DB-01 noodle: Gates as ghost notes

"Ghost notes (or grace notes) are little extra hits or embellishments that add a subtle extra feel or layer. With the DB-01 the CV gate input and CV VCF inputs are perfect for this. Here I use the Fractio Solum by Noise Engineering to provide the gate signals. The LFO into the VCF CV is from the Erica Synths Drum Modulator dual LFO. Both are synced to the same clock as the DB-01. To give the programmed notes on the DB-01 a bit of extra initial envelope the internal LFO is set to reset with each note.
There are three audio examples. The effect is reasonably subtle so if you watch the actual notes on the timeline versus the audio "hits" then the ghost note effect is more obvious. You can also see the trigger light on the Fractio (the white cable) to see when the gate is firing. Pattern three has an odd 4/3 gate timing which produces somewhat off-beat hits.
I think the main value in the ghost notes is to create variations of standard patterns that can help maintain interest and movement. And they're fun to play with :D

The Roland Jupiter-X & XM Story and Why Roland Has No Plans for a New JUPITER-8




I don't like to critique but I thought the following was a little funny (also see my note on Behringer below):

"We are very aware of the very strong passion that synth fans have for the JUPITER-8, and some continue to wait for us to introduce a true analog version. This is something we do not plan to do. Our founder Mr. Kakehashi always said, 'Never chase a ghost', and I really understand his meaning. 'Chasing the ghost' of the original JUPITER-8 or TR-808 does not make sense as we will never catch them, and this effort would not align with our vision for the future. Roland has developed many legendary products throughout our history that came from our drive to always design the future by applying the latest technology and our unique know-how from each era. This is our DNA which will never change."

"Different from the base Virtual Analog of ZEN-Core, the ABM-powered 'Model Bank' synths in the JUPITER-X and Xm reproduce the total character of specific vintage synths including the JUPITER-8, JUNO-106, JX-8P, and SH-101, all with incredible precision. The above is quoted from The Roland Jupiter-X & XM Story posted on Roland's site. There's more to the post, of course, so do check it out, but what I thought was a little funny was the 'Never chase a ghost' quote. They are clearly doing just that, only in the digital realm, not analog. But... they have ventured in analog with the JD-Xa and JD-Xi. Do I think Roland should clone the Jupiter-8 and their vintage analog? No. For one reason: Behringer. Behringer would just put them under with cheaper models, so if I were Roland, I wouldn't bother. I'm guessing the digital clones are more cost effective as well. I'd stay focused on new products just like they are doing now.  Seriously, Behringer has made it so no company will ever bother cloning their previous products.  I heard that Behringer's goal is to not only offer clones of vintage synths, but to become the largest synth manufacturer for both vintage and new designs.  Simply put, the only way to compete will be to create gear that users want and Behringer does not offer for less.

A live, semi-improvised performance, all on hardware, and inspired by some pretty tough news that has me sentimental.

I loved the Elektron Analog Four MkII so much that I picked up the Analog Rytm MkII. My feelings on the Rytm are mixed. On the one hand, it's missing that spontaneity and spark of units like the Arturia DrumBrute Impact and Teenage Engineering OP-Z, with no readymade performance effects, roller bar, or global randomization, and a slower workflow. On the other hand, I really like its analogue sound engines, any unused tracks can be converted into impressive analogue mono synths, it does beautiful things to samples, and like all Elektron boxes it integrates the effects into the sequencer really nicely.

As for the Vermona PERfourMER MkII, I'd been pining over it for ages, and it was fun to finally tinker with it. The Perfourmer definitely excels in the mid- and high- range, and I love how the independent voices making really interesting voices for chords.

Skint, faint hearted and drowning-prone (dub tech eurorack modular jam)

"A little dub tech jam at Cala Rossa. this bay is undoubtfully one of the most peculiar spot of the island. let´s see 3 curiosity about this place:

1) In 241 b.c. the final battle of the first punic war is said to have taken place in front of this bay (the battle of the egad). The roman fleets stroke down with such fury on the carthaginian that the water turned red (hence the name Cala Rossa, which means the red bay). In this sea lies thousands of carthaginian and roman wreck, making it one of the most interesting archeological spots in the island

2) Around 1200-1500 a.d. turkish pirates where raging around sicily (and sicilian pirates where raging around turkey). One of the most vicious pirates was Turghud Alì, known as Drogot, or dragut. So vicious that was referred to as "the drawn sword of islam". His action was so scary and mercyless around the egad island, that the terror spread still remains to this days. His ghost is said to wander around here, with his sharp beard and his even sharper sword. The ghost of the Mammadrau

3)Petronilla was the long yearned descent of a limestone quarry owner living in Cala Rossa. But a woman could never be the head of a quarry. One day (some says at age 18, some says at age 23) Petronilla suddenly disappeared. Zu Nillu took her place, and steered the cave for the following years, living in a still standing house that guards the bay from above. Died at age 100, her documents has been discovered to be misteriously changed, she became a man by all means,and of petronilla not a trace was left. The movie "viola di mare" (purple sea) was based around this facts.

I used an Erica synths pico voice and Pittsburgh sv1sequenced by squarp hermod, and 2 Erica Synths pico drums sequenced by bastl knit rider. 2 pico dsp, a black hole dsp, blue lantern sir mixalot, expert sleepers disting mk4 compression algorithm on the master. Recorded live directly into a Canon 600d with magic lantern"

Happy 2019 !!

This was just one of those things that happened as a happy accident, I had a 8 step sequence in my head for some time due to overconsumption of TD and wanted to just get it out of my head into a sequencer. While programming it, I was like.. what the heck, let's record something. :)

The KORG grandstage has a decent string machine emulation / sample which i use on the intro. Also from the grandstage but recorded in the 720 stereo looper is a Rhodes piano loop.

NLA1 does bass pads + a loop I recorded into the ditto, a rotary/tremolo and LFO modulated slow arpeggio thing. They both pass through the empress reverb which uses the Ghost algorithm, heavy on modulation.

The peak does 8 note sequence programmed using the Keystep. Some internal minor modulation on filters, with an LFO plus Envelopes. Internal peak FX are only used on this sound.

Sub 37 does the most complex things on this one, 3 distinct variations on one and the same patch.

The first one is vanilla lead with some filter drive, with no modulation 2VCO + very little sub.

Second part is that I also do a super fast arpeggio which i turn on just to add some extra spice toward mid track, using the same sound.

Lastly, I turn up the EG on the filter on which I have set the filter envelope looping so i can adjust the speed of the loops with the attack knob to create a pingpong effect you hear at the end. While playing with the attack turned up in the beginning it sort of sounds like a normal LFO.

"This track was a mostly analog hardware jam recorded live with a 2-track Revox PR99 1/4" reel to reel at 7 1/2 ips. Prior to recording I programmed drum tracks on a Roland TR-909 and TR-808, mixed via an old tube amp as I have run out of mixer channels. The kick is being sent to a Sherman Filterbank. The percussion is going through a channel of the Overstayer Saturator. The track also features a Roland SH-5 for the bassline, which is sequenced by a Make Noise Rene and triggered by a Doepfer Darktime (Rene trigger is not strong enough). TR-909 kick and SH-5 bass are on a group going through the other channel of the Overstayer Saturator. The obvious synth part is done with a Casio CZ-5000 of which the synth part was programmed by me from initialised patch. It is going through a ZVEX Lofi-Junky pedal, a Moog Phaser and Dr Scientist Cosmichorus. There is some subtle synth sounds (noise / fx) on L & R stereo field that is done by a PIN Portabella (modern EMS Synthi A clone) and the same sequence from Doepfer Darktime is playing some role in sequencing this from memory. The kind of ehtnic sound near the end of the track is a patch on a Make Noise shared system, using all of the modules in some way. I did a lot of tweaking on the shared system whilst recording. Also used is a Daking FetIII on percussion group and SH-5, and a Joe Meek Twin Q, Bellari RP-583 plus a couple of Valley People 610's on compression and side-chaining duties. Reverb is a spring reverb by IGS called Springtime, and two of its channels is used for a stereo synth bus, while one channel is on the TR-909 kick drum and one channel on the TR-808&909 percussion. I also have two distortion pedals (the red Chandler Limited Little Devil Coloured Boost & the blue Germanium Drive) on a stereo bus for synths, one for the left, one for the right and mix this bus in subtly. Mixed on a 8 Channel Toft Board. Mastered by myself for sound quality as oppossed to loudness by playing back the tape recording through a Thermionic Culture Vulture, followed by a Rockruepel Comp.Two, then a Tubetech HLT2a and finally a Rockruepel Limit.One before being recorded by a Tascam DA-3000.

About me:
I love analog machines and the older technology of the 90's, including tracks made live with hardware before producing with computers was all the rage. I like thinking of the sound generating gear as instruments, which is why I do not use a computer to make music (I don't consider the computer as a very good instrument to jam on, although it is possible as lots of other people demonstrate - such as my friend Skueue who shows how powerful a computer can be for jamming). A lot of my interest in music is closely related to machines, and without machines I may not have had such an interest in pursuing a hobby in music and sound design. My gear is not dissimilar a nice car to car enthusiasts, and I have chosen gear over owning a car, clothes shopping, fancy restaurants etc. I am not interested in fame, money or popularity and really appreciate people that do music, and art in general, for the love of it. I believe in making unique music based on going with what you feel rather than what you've heard others doing and trying to recreate something that's already been done. I use chinese characters as an artist name as most people will not be able to search for you, which ultimately makes the focus of building your brand name and being popular non-existant. This way, I can focus entirely on making music and not the associated things that come with it."

0-coast ambient: data.ghost

"Analogue synth performance featuring the Makenoise 0-Coast synthesizer. The core of this track is a single take performance, with a motif sequenced by the Malekko Varigate 8+.

Patch and Recording Notes

On the surface this track might seem a little different, but the process and themes build on some earlier ideas. The central theme is an unedited, single take. Although the CV sequencing pitch remains unchanged throughout, the 2 gate streams firing the Contour and Slope generators take advantage of the Varigate 8+'s probability features. This leads to the underlying pattern or data, being constantly reshaped by the 'sampling' of the gate streams.

Additionally, there are 4 more CV outputs from a Malekko AD/LFO routed to Contour Dcy (via volt math), Overtn, Balnc, and Slope Time. These are free-running LFO's which creates a constantly shifting timbre. The amount of modulation to those destinations is increased through the recording.

The last part of the modulation is the routing of the random source (clocked by the sq wave) to the lin FM of the Oscillator. The amount of noise is adjusted throughout the performance.

The idea was to create a single pattern, whose overall audible shape and timbre constantly shifted throughout the piece. You catch glimpses of it and then it settles back into the murk.

Two additional passes were recorded and these used the exact same gate stream, but did not use the CV. They are a low 'kick' drum and higher pitched percussion. All 3 tracks were generated from the same gate source, but the probability and offsets obscure the pattern. I wanted a to create a rhythm that was persistent, but remained elusive.

The central theme is completely unedited. As a final mix I hand edited the level of each percussive track to either accent or reduce their interactions with the theme. No compression or EQ is used anywhere in the recording. I wanted to retain as much of the natural dynamics of the 0-Coast as possible (as they are amazing). The final mix is simply balanced by detailed adjustments to the levels of the percussion tracks.

The central theme was recorded through the Strymon BigSky running a custom 'Chorale' patch which went direct to the Strymon TimeLine running a custom LoFi patch. There is quite a lot of pre-delay on the reverb, so the wash becomes quite layered. The use of very short and very long notes is deliberate and creates shifting harmonies and pulses.

The 2 percussive tracks were recorded through a custom 'NonLinear' patch on Strymon 'BigSky'.

As usual, very little concern was shown to the notion of synching up all of the different timing elements! :-)

The interaction between a carefully planned patch and live performance is something I am finding very rewarding, both as a creator and a listener."

Yamaha CS-60 synthesizer noodling

"Yay! I finally have a Yamaha CS-60 synthesizer. I went through a lot of grief to get this. It was not in good working order when I received it. Dan Manning of Gateway Music Gear LLC worked to restore it. He completed Part 1 of the restoration, then let me have it back for a few weeks. Now he has to take it back to his workshop to finish it. Before I lose it again for a month, I want to enjoy playing it a bit. There's some distortion and ghost notes, and the pitch ribbon sometimes goes crazy. All that should be fixed in Part 2 of the restoration. Dan is a good tech and I know he will bring this grand old synth fully back to life. But even with its issues, it sounds pretty good! It was not playable before Dan worked on it. (You don't want to buy a CS 50/60/80 without first identifying a good synth tech within reasonable driving distance of your house.)

This video is nothing extraordinary. I'm just fiddling around, playing with the different sounds. In the background, I have a MoroderNova (it's behind my head) playing an arpeggiated D major chord, and a Korg M1 (you can see the corner peeking into frame on the far right) playing a repeating D note using the Roland XP-30's arpeggiator. Then I have a D-50 holding a sustained D major chord.

Sorry for the poor audio quality. This was an impromptu video. I just propped my iPhone on the edge of a chair and started filming. It looks like the audio is out of sync with the video. Not sure how that happened. In the future, I'll shoot something that looks and sounds better. But at least I have a video record of this synth's existence before it leaves me again."

"A little drum & bass with the Make Noise 9U, 0-Coast and Elektron Analog RYTM.

Rene is sequencing the Telharmonic. Pressure Points has control over the DPO and 0-Coast. 0-Coast is running through a Malekko Ekko 616 Analog Delay, Earthquaker Devices Ghost Echo & The Warden before hitting the 9U system. 9U system audio out is being fed to the Analog RYTM and being compressed against the rhythm track. Audio is recorded direct into Logic via a Mackie ONYX with no additional processing.

FM EXPLORATIONS AND MICROTONAL DRONES FROM NYZ (AKA DAVE NOYZE, DAVID BURRASTON, NOYZELAB, BRYEN TELKO)

This is the first release by NYZ and is a superb musical collection of research areas classified to internal Noyzelab operations. Not even .MEDS label were informed of the secret processes underlying its creation, excepting that we know it involved Frequency Modulation (FM) synthesis! We have not been given any information regarding when this work was recorded, but we suspect the material spans at least a decade of David's FM algorithm research on numerous synthesizers, as well his own custom built ear deceiving gear...

According to one reviewer of David's previous musical output he "gleefully disrupts just about every standard convention of musical form you could think of, including those of so-called experimental musics."

MATRIXSYNTH recently asked NYZ why he put together this new album of FM synthesis based explorations, and whether he would discuss some of the process behind it. The declassified information below has been put together by NYZ especially for a MATRIXSYNTH exclusive.

The main reasons for making this album were an interest in FM synthesis in both analogue modular and MIDI/digital mediums. I had worked with digital FM synthesis since getting a Yamaha TX81Z when they came out back in 1987 (which I still have, along with another backup machine with a very hummy mains transformer which bleeds onto the outs). How me and another synth friend used to cry with drunken laughter at preset D11 Hole in 1... :) But after initially wondering whether I had just wasted about 350 UK pounds on an utter piece of shit... I quickly warmed to its better presets, and its very different approach to synthesis yielded enough interesting results early on for it not to get outed.

Two Knocks For Yes - Spooky Event with Buchla 200e Performance & Release in Time for Halloween

"A little sneak peek of preparation on the Buchla 200e for the Two Knocks For Yes live show which takes place at Saint Andrews Church, Brighton (UK). Also being released as a limited edition cassette on Castles in Space Records [details on the release with embed below and Two Knocks for Yes event trailer further below.].

'In every story of things that go bump in the night, there are two possibilities. One, that it’s a hoax. Two, that there is something going on beyond the grasp of the human mind'.

And so begins Black Channels’ radiophonic exploration in to the poltergeist phenomenon that forms part of this evenings immersive entertainment, alongside a talk on the folklore of death and water by James Burt, ghost stories and archive video footage and photographs, all hosted by paranormal enthusiast, Curtis James.

Real life reports of paranormal activity, otherworldly vibrations and oscillations, chilling accounts of nocturnal visitations and strange activity in the most mundane of suburban surroundings will echo around the 19th Century stone walls of Saint Andrews Church, Brighton.

There are tales of hauntings in the venue itself (no longer used for worship), and it is certainly true that the burial vaults beneath the pews have yet to be removed.

Doors open at 7:30pm. Performance starts at 8. There will be no admittance after 8.

Mixing real life stories of paranormal activity with otherworldly vibrations and oscillations conjured up on the Buchla Electric Music Box. Following on from their brilliant and well received debut single on Death Waltz Originals, this limited edition cassette continues their preoccupation with other worlds, parallel dimensions and the dark tapestry of the imagination. Chilling accounts of nocturnal visitations and strange activity in the most mundane of suburban surroundings echo in and out of focus alongside electronic manifestations and tape manipulations in this 26 minute experimental radio collage.

Side two features wonderful incidental instrumentals soundtracking true ghost stories which provide essential tools for all paranormal investigators and otherside travellers.

Each tape comes with a free download, and two hand numbered Ghost Spotting Report Forms, enabling those working in the field to report their own ghost sightings and visitations. Keep your eyes peeled and your wits about you.
