Mystery Vintage Mini Synthesizer BB

Here's an interesting find in via Justin.

If anyone knows what it is and/or has anymore info on it, let us know.

If you zoom in on the bottom pic, you'll see the controls, left to right, are as follows:

WA-WA with Mechanic and Range knobs, and switches below, one Automatic and one Rate.

INFRA-MODULATOR with a Power label below, and knobs for Rate and Range. On/Off and Rate switches below.

COLOR-OPERATING with eight sliders and eight On/Off switches. I'm guessing these are harmonic amount sliders with the ability to switch them off on the fly. So this is likely an additive synth. Curious if it sounds more like an organ or a synth. Also curious if it's monophonic or poly/paraphonic.

GLISSANDO / PORTAMENTO with two sliders and two switches. One switch is On/Off and the other appears to be direction. BTW, this section makes me think this is more synth than organ and likely monophonic.

NOISE GENERATOR knob with On/Off switch.

VOLUME knob

POWER On/Off switch.

Note the absence of envelopes.

Update: it kind of reminds me of the Baldwin Syntha Sound. That one had a SPECTRUM SHAPER. Note the lack of a Baldwin label on the front of the Syntha Sound. The BB on the front could be for Baldwin, considering it's actually a mirrored B.

Update2: New pics in via Justin along with some info.

"I spoke to the girl who owns the synth. She said its a Czech synth and it belongs to her family and was packed away in storage for a long time until she placed it in her store as a display object. She said its not for sale."

The synth is located in a shop in Prague.

Father & Daughter Cinematic Synthesizer Jam Improvisation with Hydrasynth / Grandmother / Prophet 08

video by Denis Polic

"My little girl came today in my studio, and asked if she can jam with me, so i said: "sure, jump in". She likes the "meowing" sound of Grandmother, and started improvising a melody on it, and i tought: if i can put some chords underneeth, it could be a fine jam, so i turned the cam on, started playing with her, and there is the result, hope you enjoy it!!!

Cheers and peace on Earth!!!"

Tracktion BioTek - New Organic Virtual Instrument from Wolframe Franke & Taiho Yamada

"This is a selection of demos from the new Tracktion BioTek virtual synthesizer. Each cue was performed live using a single BioTek patch in order to demonstrate the playability and expressiveness of the instrument. Wolfram Franke's powerful synth engine completely transforms sound between nature and technology via the central XY controller. It was an honor and pleasure to direct sound development for this project, and to contribute what I consider to be some of my best sound design work to date.

Special thanks to the entire BioTek sound design team, including Wolfram, Mike Wall, Sendy, justin3am, and Randy Lee. Check out electronic music from Wolfram Franke, Sendy and justin3am here on SoundCloud:

@wolfram-franke
@sendy
@justin3am"

Wolframe Franke was previously with Waldorf. He was the developer behind Largo, PPG Wave 2.V & 3.V, Attack and Steinberg's V1. He also created Stroke Machine for the iPad.

Taiho Yamada was the Project Manager and Head of Sound Design at Alesis. He worked on the QuadraSynth, QS series, A6 Andromeda, Ion, Micron, and the Fusion HD workstations. He was also the man behind the M-Audio Venom.

Anyone know who the girl with the whisky bottle is? [Update: it's Kristina Childs who designed the UI for BioTek. Thanks to Lima in the comments for the info and Anonymous for the link!]

You'll find more info on Tracktion's BioTek on their website here. They also have a Micro Synth Pack.

In this video, Yuichi Onoue plays his handmade ribbon controller. It can change a oscillator pitch smoothly, depending on the place which you press down. It was originally made as a kind of MOOG SYNTHESIZER's controller in late 60's. I made this following its example. And playing style is self-taught.

Synthetic Sound Labs Steiner Filter - Model 1020

"The SSL 1020 Steiner Filter is a unique filter for sound shaping that synthesists have long admired for both it's warmth and quirkiness. Invented by Nyle Steiner in the early 1970's, this filter was used in Nyle's Synthacon synthesizer line and has been lovingly recreated and updated as part of our modular line.

At first glance, it may appear to be another 2-pole State Variable type filter with it's high-pass (HP), band-pass (BP) & low-pass (LP) outputs. But that's where things get turned upside down. The 1020 has HP, BP & LP inputs, not outputs. These allow for all sorts of CUTOFF (center frequency) controlled "mixing" of input signals. Due to the unique way it's inventor injected the inputs into the internal signal path, they tend to slightly interact with each other and the control voltages, making the 1020 a bit more organic and unpredictable than many other synth filters. The RESONANCE also interacts with the CUTOFF adding an additional natural touch and warmth. But if you really crank the RESONANCE up, you can make all that warmth go out the window because at or near oscillation, the 1020 starts to squeal and complain like a school girl tantrum. We factory adjust the 1020 to stay just below oscillation at maximum panel settings, but you have the power to adjust this by a circuit board mounted trimmer.
Controls and Connectors
- HP (high-pass) Level control
- BP (band-pass) Level control

KORG DS-10 Japan Release Date

And we have a release date... for Japan.

July 24, 2008, only at Amazon Japan

Worldwide will come. via Cnet where you will find the full article. An interesting side note is that the people behind the DS-10, AQ Interactive, brought us Hatsune Miku, the "Vocaloid2 girl." Hatsune Miki is an anime character that uses the Vocaloid engine - she will sing whatever text you enter. Image below for reference - I went with the work safe one.

"Korg DS-10 is approved by Korg (I don't know what "approved" means actually!), but will not be released from this firm. A Japanese game developer, AQ Interactive Inc. of Tokyo, will distribute DS-10. Actual development has been done by Korg and Cavia, Inc., another speciality game developer in Tokyo.

The original MS-10 (price 53,500 yen in 1978; US$300 then) was a monophonic, single oscillator job. DS-10 simulator works as two synthesizers (each of them, dual-oscillator affair), since Nintendo DS has dual-screen, upper and lower.

Adding to this two tracks (or two synthesizers), four tracks of drum machine sounds have been built-in. Altogether, DS-10 can be treated as six tracks, 16-step synthesizer/sequencer. Maximum, tune of 99 phrases long can be produced.

Three ways of note entry input: Touch-control screen, keyboard screen, and X-Y matrix screen. All three of them controlled by DS stylus."

Synthetic Sound Labs Steiner Filter (1 MU) - Model 1021

via Synthetic Sound Labs

Updated version of the model 1020 from 2010. You'll find some demo links of the original from 2010 on site.

"The SSL 1021 Steiner Filter is a 1 MU revision & enhancement of our popular but discontinued 1020 Steiner module, which was 2 MU. All the same crazy goodness is still there, plus a hidden feature that calms it down a bit without losing that wet, slippery sound everyone loves.

The Steiner filter is a unique filter for sound shaping that synthesists have long admired for both its warmth and quirkiness.

The 1021 has HP, BP & LP inputs, not outputs. These allow for all sorts of CUTOFF (center frequency) controlled "mixing" of input signals.

Due to the unique way it's inventor injected the inputs into the internal signal path, they tend to slightly interact with each other and the control voltages, making the 1021 a bit more organic and unpredictable than many other synth filters. The RESONANCE also interacts with the CUTOFF adding an additional natural touch and warmth.

But if you really crank the RESONANCE up, you can make all that warmth go out the window because at or near oscillation, the 1021 starts to squeal and complain like a school girl tantrum.

There’s a hidden feature built into the Cutoff frequency knob. When pressed in, the 1021 switches to a “warm mode” that allows more subtle control over its settings. Pull the knob and you go right back to the original crazy Steiner – but watch your speakers and ears. Dogs run for the hills in this mode!"

Update:

And the UI was created by her. :)

According to CDM:

"In place of drab text menus or something like that, the new Teenage Engineering PO-32 Tonic is … a little different. There are adorable characters with wide eyes and huge noses, quaffing cocktails. There’s a ringing telephone … with a mouse perhaps gnawing away at its end. There are spiders – various spiders.

No, I don’t mean the UI on the PO-32 display seems like it was drawn by a 9-year-old girl. It actually was.

Her name is Ivana, she really is nine years old, and she’s the daughter of Teenage Engineering CEO and founder (and whiz designer himself) Jesper Kouthoofd. And in pictures provided exclusively to CDM, we have proof that she designed the display. Talk about landing your dream job in the musical instruments industry early.

I think her creation is genius. And she probably sets some kind of record here."

Octave/Plateau CAT SRM Synthesizer SN B3933

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.
Uploaded on Mar 31, 2020

via this auction

"A genuine, working CAT SRM, and I'm the original owner, having purchased it on April 18th, 1980. Yup, exactly 40 years ago.

This unit was never abused, but it definitely was used in live performances. That explains the scuffed side panels; I didn't have a road case for it. The control surface and keys are nice, but yeah, that wood could use a refinishing. Funny... I just noticed that an ebayer in the UK sells new side panels. Good for you, fella! Come to think of it, maybe you could just switch the panels left-to-right so that the "good" wood is now outside? Hmm...

To hear and see this synth in action, follow this YouTube link: [video embedded above]

My keyboard setup back in the day included a Rhodes 73 Stage, Farfisa Syntorchestra, Clavinet C, and this CAT. Very, very analog. the CAT was pretty much a solo instrument, although it did play the occasional bass line.

"Maria Magdalena" - on Yamaha HE-8

YouTube via organfairy
"After having build an electric glockenspiel, repaired an organ, been on a drum machine sight seeing, done a little girl car joyriding, and posed against a giant sculpture of four white undressed men I think it is time to just do an ordinary organ playing video again!
This time it is the 80's hit "Maria Magdalena" - originally performed by Italian singer Sandra - that I am playing in a multitrack arrangement. There is nothing special about the video this time except for a little trick in the beginning - I tried but I couldn't move my finger that fast.....

The instruments I used was Yamaha HE-8 organ, Roland CR-1000 drum machine, and Roland JX-8P synthesizer."

Linn LM1 80s beats on iPad part 1: Prince, Sharon Redd, Human League, Michael Jackson and others

video upload by harlemnightsmusic

"Tracklist:

* Prince - Kiss
* Morris Day - Dance Electric
* Vanity 6 - Nasty Girl
* Colonel Abrams - Not Gonna Let
* Sharon Redd - Love How You Feel
* Human League - Don't You Want Me
* Sharon Redd - Beat The Street
* Prince - 1999
* Flash & the Pan - Midnight Man
* Michael Jackson - Thriller
* Michael Jackson - Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'
* Gary's gang - Runaway
* Morris Day - Jungle Love
* Vanity 6 - Sex Shooter
* Gary Low - You Are A Danger
* Human League - Do Or Die
* Prince - 777 9311
* Prince - When Doves Cry
* Prince - I Would Die 4U
* Human League - Open Your Heart

In 2009 I recreated many favorite 80s drumbeats on the then new Korg Electribe samplers, sampling the Linndrum, Oberheim DMX, Roland CR78, TR808 and more. I copied the patterns by ear and also tried to catch the vibe of each original track as much as possible, using only the internal EQ and sampler fx. Later I expanded the series to synthesizer medleys and full tracks. It led me to a lot of contacts, collaborations and releases.

Now I wanted to reboot this in portable music production. Jim Audo's GR16 iPad app felt very much like the Electribe SX in use. So I started transferring my old beats to the newer medium, improved and expanded them to do another series of classic drumbeats, to inspire new music.

The Novation Launchpad Pro Mk3 integrates well with it and gives more tactile feel to it, as with the Electribes. It's however not necessary to use it.

The result is a great sounding retro beat machine that now even fits on an iPhone.

And yes, that's an LM2 at the back, not LM1.

Enjoy

New Lower West Side Studio CGS85 Serge Triple Wave Shaper

Product Demonstrationvideo by Lower West Side Studio

"Lower West Side Studio demonstrates the Cat Girl Synthesizers CGS85 Serge Triple Wave Shaper.

3 independent wave shapers can be used individually or combined to mutate incoming signals into something wonderful

For more information visit lowerwestsidestudio.com"

via Lower West Side Studio

"This module is Ken Stone’s variation on the 1973 Classic Serge Triple Wave Shaper module.

To quote the 1982 catalog: The Triple Wave Shaper (TWS) is a non-linear modifier which can transform a sawtooth wave into a sine wave. This module incorporates three independent wave shapers for modifying synthesizer waveforms or for processing signals from preamplified instruments. Although originally designed as a wave shaper for our early oscillators, this module has been found to be a excellent modifier of electronic and acoustic sounds, and is highly recommended for subtle timbrel modifications beyond the range of simple oscillator/filter patches.

Each of the 3 channels supports a signal input with an attenuator. There are 2 control voltage inputs and both AC and DC outputs.

A Join switch connects the outputs of channels 2 and 3 back into channel 1 for some bizarre wave shaping potential. Each individual output is still simultaneously available.

The CGS85 Serge Triple Wave Shaper comes in a 1U width.

The module operates at +/- 15V and comes with a MOTM style power connector. Included is an MOTM to Synthesizers.com power connector adapter."

The Sound of Foreigner - Waiting For A Girl Like You - Oberheim OB-Xa

video upload by RetroSound

"One of my favorite songs from the 80s and my last video in 2021.
Thank you for all the likes, for the kind words and for the support.

I used here the Oberheim OB-Xa Synthesizer for the pads, string sounds and the main synth riff.
For the Yamaha CP-80 piano sound I used my Yamaha Reface CP incl. the internal effect section. The bass sound is made with the Moog Source. The Drums are samples from the E-MU library.

The sound tutorial for the intro sound can you find here." [posted here]
