Yamaha TG-33 Welcome Message

Title link takes you to shots via this auction.

"Nice to meet you"

A little synth history: The TG-33 is a direct descendant of the SCI Prophet VS, vector synth. It is different than wavetable synthesis found in the PPG and Waldorf synths. When SCI folded, Dave worked for Yamaha and the technology used in the Prophet V went into the TG-33 and eventually the KORG Wavestation when Dave moved on to Korg. The Prophet V had analog filters, the TG-33 and Wavestation were all digital and of course they all sounded different. BTW, if anyone has more to add to the story, feel free to comment. The one thing I always wonder was who owned the technology and how it moved from Yamaha to Korg. You'd think Yamaha would have held onto it if they could. I'm sure I heard the story at one point, but it's all a blur...

Update: MP3 demo via smackos in the comments.

ARP 1612 Sequencer SN #0001

Title link takes you to shots via this auction. via jeffc.

"This wonderful unit has serial number 0001. It’s in full working order and near mint condition. Some minor cosmetic flaws are visible. A photo copy of both Owner’s and Service manual will be included with the sequencer. A classic sequencer of the 70's. You create your sequences with the 16 sliders. Adjust the sliders to change pitch while each slider represents a sixteenth note. It uses Control Voltage (CV) and Gate protocols to play your sequences on a connected analog synthesizer. The ARP Sequencer works perfectly with the ARP 2500, 2600, Odyssey, Avatar and other ARP synthesizers as well as Roland, Oberheim and Sequential Circuits. To interface the Sequencer with other types of CV/Gate capable synths like fx the Mini Moog or the Korg MS 20 would require a CV converter box. The ARP sequencer is fun and easy to learn. Use it to create continuous arpeggios or simple sequences of patterns for your vintage analog gear. Tweak it in real-time as you create or perform, it's very hands-on. Product description from the manual: The ARP Sequencer, model 1612, is a 16 step sequential voltage generator. A voltage slider is provided for each of the 16 steps to adjust the voltage output from 0 to +10 volts. The sequencer may be used in a “8 x 2” mode so that outputs 1 through 8 (Bank A) and 9 through 16 (Bank B) sequence in parallel. The outputs of banks A and B are prewired to a voltage quantizer which effectively “rounds off” the sequencer’s voltage to the nearest whole twelwth of a volt. This allows for precise tuning. A low frequency voltage controlled oscillator governs the stepping speed of the sequencer and can be started, stopped, gated, or speeded up either manually or externally. Serious bidders and Paypal only. WILL SHIP WORLD WIDE, but buyer will pay for shipping. Item location is in Drammen, Norway - Europe."

Admin: New Template Coming - Adding a 3rd Column

Update: OK, we are back to two. That was easy. I'm not a big fan of change myself when it comes to websites. Just wanted to see what it was like with the labels on the right. New poll below. Leave the right nav on the right or move it over to the left.

Update: I just flipped the columns so the main blog in the center with the main column on the left and the labels on the right. Let me know if this is better or worse in the comments. The votes were 19 for two columns and 3 for three. If you voted and changed your mind on your vote mention in the comments. Also see if this grows on you.

----- OLD POST -----

Just wanted to let you know that I am going to try three columns on the site instead of two. If you see any funkiness, this is why. Please bear with me. The overall look and feel will remain the same.

Almost done. Off to go cook dinner for the family. Let me know what you think. I put the labels on the far right. I'll be renaming them so each one only takes a single line.

OK, made a poll out of this. You decide. Note the site is set to three with the right being relatively thin. It will remain that way with three. I need to crop some of the labels so each one will be a single line.

Waldorf Wave Demo

Title link takes you to a demo of the Waldorf Wave on Audio-Workshop.de. The following is what Till Kopper had to say on the demo via the Waldorf User Group, posted here with permission:

"This is the WAVE demo that was released in november 1994 in the german KEYBOARDS magazine as a starter for the 3 issue long special about the big WAVE. And the WAVE on the front cover of this magazine and the one heard here are now owned by a long time Waldorf list member. The name of this track is "Ultimate WAVE".

The recording was done by the german Peter Gorges (BTW: a very friendly person). Waldorf also released a WAVE demo track on the demo CD named "Planet WAVE" in 1995 (?). This track there is named "Planet WAVE" and also features a synthetic voices of the Macintosh computers. Is it a rather funny track because of the lyrics. And full of nice WAVE sounds.

On the track "Like a WAVE" also featured on this CD you can hear Axel Hartmann (Waldorf special designer then and stil designer for Waldorf and some other well known synth companies) sing !!! And it is not bad. Again WAVE sounds. If you listen to this track, you might think this could be an unreleased track of the "Top-Gun" or other US movies to be used at the end credits. It is so "uplifting" in the sound and harmonies.

If only the artist of these track and Waldorf would agree on releasing these tracks on the Waldorf pages on day ...

keep on turning these knobs
Till Kopper"

Yamaha SK20

Images via this auction.

"Its a combination of FM based organ, fully analog polysynth and string machine.. The organ section is without a doubt the best hammond sound you can get for a low price and it has many other charms too. The synth section is 7voice polyphonic, with dual detunable VCOs, and has a lovely warm juicy tone. The resonant filter has a good gritty and squelchy sound, and a beautiful ring to it. The ensemble and tremolo effects are superb too.. The string section is nothing to write home about but in small doses adds some nice character to the overall mix.

Made famous by Sigur Ros. When you get to know the sound of this synth you will hear it all over Sigur Ros recordings. Read what they have to say about it here.

Poll: How Many Posts Should I Have on the Front Page

I just set the site back to 3 days worth of posts on the main page. I switched it from 3 days to 40 posts a while back but so much is coming in now I think I want to go back to 3 days. I'm already at 28 posts today. The idea behind three days is that's about as much time it takes for a post to get fully seen and commented on. The concern of course are the load times and scrolling vs. paging through the site. Another option would be even fewer posts but then you would have to click on the "Older Posts" link at the bottom of each page. Also if you are submitting something, with 3 days set you are guaranteed to have the post up for at least that long. Again, the site is currently set to 3 days, so see how you like it. Majority wins on this one.

"A household ladder extended with a sensor system transforms into a real musical instrument. The ordinary ladder becomes a ToneLadder.

Stepping on a bar of the ladder or touching it by hand creates a sound, tone or musical loop, which varies from rung to rung. You can create a piece of music by stepping up and down on the ladder. Together with a partner you can even play a duet. There is a ToneLadder for everyone: standard, dynamic or even wireless."

Spaceman Technologies - Multitouch Tactile Sequencer

video upload by AndrewFentem

"Spaceman Technologies has pioneered multi-touch touchscreen research. Many different 'multi-touch' interfaces for both musical and general-purpose computer applications have been developed. These surfaces are capable of discriminating between (and tracking) multiple objects, human touches, and/or elements of a user-reconfigurable mechanical or graphical overlay in contact with that surface.
The images above show several different multi-touch touchscreens and multi-object-tracking interfaces developed for various musical applications in collaboration with Novation EMS Ltd - an electronic music equipment and synthesiser manufacturer.

IP status: Various patent applications filed. Since spring 2007 when Apple Inc announced their IPhone, and Microsoft announced their 'Surface', both products incorporating 'multitouch' touchscreen technologies, there has been considerable commercial interest in this field. Spaceman Technologies began this research project in 2002, prior to Apple Inc commencing the filing of their 'multitouch' touchpad patent applications in 2005."

"In 2003/2004 Spaceman Technologies developed quite a number of innovative sound synthesis and electronic music controllers, sequencers and interfaces. These efforts were mainly concentrated on developing tactile instruments, sequencers and mixing desks based around the Spaceman Technologies multi-object tracking and multi-touch sensor technologies, in collaboration with Novation EMS Ltd.
One of these interfaces - a multitouch tactile sequencer (shown above) was exhibited by Kinetica Museum, London, 18 May - 29 June 2007.

In addition to these projects various DSP-based sound synthesis and spectrum analysis toys and gadgets were developed such as the SoundMouse and the OpticalMicrophone."
