Instrument-a-day 7: Speak and Play! [phoneme keyboard]

flickr By ranjit
"Speak and Play! is a speech synthesizer for pianists. It has two parts: a score generator that turns written English text into musical scores, and a sample set (hurriedly constructed from my own voice) which, when used to play the scores, approximately recreates the original text.
Thanks to pianist Margaret Leng Tan for making Speak and Play! speak and play, and for coming up with the name!

We think about a redesign of the unit (Dark Energy II) but it will be another instrument with a different sound and features (e.g. probably a 12 dB multimode filter with lowpass, highpass, bandpass and notch (like the A-121 Multimode Filter- but i guess without CEM3320 - instead of the 24 dB lowpass).'"

The Kaoss X-Y touchpad provides amazing control using a single finger. There are drums, synths, basses, chords, and all kinds of sounds. Using the onboard Loop/Phrase recorder allows major grooves to be built up one track at a time. Gate Arpeggiation keeps it all happening in perfect sync!

"Veteran Canadian producer and hardware lover, Solvent, gave StudioFeed an inside look at his Bloor-West home studio set-up, as well as discussed everything from why he makes music to the story behind his recent RDJ-CS5 EP. Jason touched on many topics involving music in this lengthy interview, including what it’s like to have a fifteen-year career and to still be considered a “relatively obscure” musician. In addition to making music, Solvent is also involved in a documentary on modular synthesizers called “I Dream of Wires” that is expected to be released later in 2012."

"I'm producting a range of low-cost cabinets for MU (Dotcom, Moog, Moon, STG Soundlabs, etc.) or 5U (MOTM, Modcan, etc.) modular systems."
You can find them on amherstdesign.
"The cabinet consists of six panels (three identical pairs; two for top/bottom, two for front/back, two for left/right sides) made from 1/2″ (12mm) Fir-core plywood with Maple face and back . Everything uses CARB Phase II compliant material (no added formaldehyde in the glue!) so that people in California won’t get their shipment stopped at the border. To customize it you can stain, paint, laminate, or decorate this to your heart’s content."

METASONIX R-53 Vacuum Tube Wave Shaper Ring Mod
via this auction
"the r-53 is directly derived from our legendary tm-1 device. it uses a 12af6/bd6 remote-cutoff pentode and a 12av7 dual triode. waveshaping is provided by a vacuum-tube "pulser" circuit that spits irregular pulses onto the input waveform. they synchronize erratically with the input pitch (if a waveform with sharp transitions is used). combined with true vacuum-tube circuit distortion, this can provide a vast range of complex, aggressive distortion effects, utterly unique in the world. a basic ring-modulation function is also available in the unit--applying a carrier pitch from an external oscillator to the screen grid of the pentode, this allows making inharmonic sum-and-difference pitch sound effects, with a unique vacuum tube pentode sound.
power requirement: +-12v dc, 200 ma.
the metasonix r-series of vacuum-tube modules is intended for use in any "eurorack" standard modular synthesizer system. all r-series modules are 22hp (112mm) wide and fit in any doepfer(tm), analogue systems(tm), or other compatible cabinet. they are powered entirely from the cabinet's internal +-12v dc power supplies, using doepfer compatible 16-pin power connectors. their circuits protrude behind the panel less than 25mm (1 inch). all vacuum tubes are nos (new old stock) types from classic american and european manufacturers that are run very conservatively for long life, and are readily available from distributors. the tubes protrude from the panel for visibility and cooling, less than 38mm (1.5 inches), and should fit inside a doepfer a-100 suitcase cabinet lid or into a doepfer mini case. all audio inputs and outputs and cv inputs/outputs are 100% compatible with other synthesizer modules. plate voltage is provided by a tiny switching supply producing clean 48v regulated at low current, which is very safe and will not injure the user. potentiometers are top-quality alpha rk12l types, and 3.5mm phone jacks are special kobiconn vertical-mount types, much better quality than the cheap ones usually seen in euro modules. each r-module is fully protected against reverse supply voltage, overvoltage, undervoltage, or incorrect hookup to external equipment. as with all our products, the r series is totally handcrafted in northern california, usa."

Also known as the Coron DS8, Asama Drum Sync, Storm Drum Sync, Grant PS-7 Percussion Synth, KMD Drum Exciter, Cortez D-2 Mini Synth, BIAS BS-2, and possibly more. See the Coron label below. Anyone know why there were so many branding for this? I think this holds the record.
via the listing: "The Mini Synth, when connected to my headphones, covered a massive range of synthesised sounds and this is an incredibly flexible unit for its mini size and I would, I guess, sound fabulous in the right hands and with the right input and amplification (I haven't got the means to really put it through its paces). Please feel free to ask as many questions as you wish - I am not familiar with synthesisers (I obtained this in a job-lot including vintage microphones and headphones)"
