Mystery Synth - Korg 700s/770 Prototype?

Published on Apr 15, 2013

"I found this "mystery synth" at a garage sale this weekend. It appears very similar to a Korg 700s, but upon closer examination there are clear differences. The second oscillator has it's own waveform and pitch selector, for example. And the style of sliders and controls are certainly different than those found on a 700s.

If you know anything about this instrument, please let me know!

At any rate it's a great sounding synth!"

This one in via via Dan Goldstein who found the synth. Talk about an amazing find.
Click here for a pic of the inside of a Mini-KORG 700.  Update: also click here for one more.  Note two of the boards appear to match but this mystery synth has one more. I couldn't find any of the inside of a 770 to compare.  If you search for KORG 770 or KORG 700s you will see the controls are similar but different.  With that we are left with two possibilities, this is either a very nicely done DIY synth composed of vintage KORG parts or a KORG prototype that fell somewhere within the 700 series.

And details also posted on gearslutz: "Here's everything I know about it:

I found this instrument on CraigsList, posted at a garage sale here in Las Vegas. The seller said that he'd purchased it on eBay not knowing what it was, and that he believed it was "built by a guy that worked at Ibanez." That was all the provenance that he was able to provide. The instrument was clearly so bizarre that I had to take it home and find out more about it. It does work, mostly, and it certainly has a unique sound despite it's incredibly strange architecture, which I'll describe below.

I opened it up, eagerly hoping for clues about its origins, but what I found deepened the mystery further. As you can see in the photos below, the circuity of this synthesizer is totally discreet. There are some metal can-style Op Amps, namely 741HC and MN131A, which would seem to date this in the early 70s. There are no markings of any sort on the circuit boards, just hand-labeled numbers by the patch points on the circuit boards. I can't find any sort of name anywhere, though the words "Made In Japan" are on the 1/4" output panel.

The architecture of this instrument is incredibly bizarre. It features two standard oscillators. Oscillator one has triangle, square, and sawtooth waveforms, plus a "Chorus 1" and "Chorus 2" setting that seem to be chorused sawtooth waves. Oscillator two features triangle, square, sawtooth, a thinner square wave, and reverse sawtooth. Then there's a third sort of oscillator, which is switchable between noise and what I think is some sort of ring-modulator that operates on Oscillator One. There's a global tuning knob but no fine-tune knobs for the oscillators.

Things get weird after that. There's an attack-release envelope for the VCA, and that's the only envelope you get. There's a resonant low-pass filter and a resonant high-pass filter, but no resonance knob, so you're stuck with a single cutoff control for each filter. The low and high cutoff filters are sort of "ganged" together so that you can't move the Lowpass cutoff above the Highpass cutoff - they move together once they meet, if that makes sense. There's an LFO that seems to be fixed at a triangle wave, and it can be routed to frequency or filter or both, and there's some sort of vibrato delay switch that doesn't seem to do anything. There's also a Repeat switch and speed control that will cause the envelope to retrigger, which is pretty cool. There are some other bizarre controls too, including a "Bright" switch that makes the sound brighter, an "Expand" switch that doesn't really do much of anything, and a "Bender" switch that causes notes to quickly bend up to the pressed key (I remember a similar feature on the Roland VP330, for example).

There's a 3-position sustain switch that goes from "Short" to "Long" and determines if the envelope continues after you've released a key. It works fine, but as soon as you release a key the frequency of the note played drops to some lower, random value. Perhaps the sample-and-hold is not working right.

The cabinet and design is clearly Minimoog inspired, but it's not a Minimoog case. My first thought was that this was a home-made synth of some kind but I'm very doubtful after spending time with it. The silkscreening is very professionally done, the cabinet is all custom-made with interesting angles. There's even a sort of thumb screw on the bottom that lets you lock down the folding-up synth portion of the instrument for transport. Everything about the instrument seems to suggest it was professionally made. The only outputs are a Low and High audio output. There are no inputs at all, no bend wheel or mod wheel, though there's clearly space for such a thing. The lack of basic features (i.e. sustain & release envelope stages, fine tune, resonance amount, etc.) and the addition of unusual features (repeat, bender, etc.) make for one odd combination. And the fact that I can't find any label anywhere makes this a serious synthesizer mystery.

I've owned an awful lot of analog synthesizers and have read decades worth of magazines and web sites, and I've never seen anything like this. Does anyone here have any insight at all into what this might be? Perhaps it's a kit synth from the 70s, like a PAIA design of some kind? Perhaps this was a prototype for a product that never got built? The components date it to the early 70s, so perhaps some company was attempting to challenge the Minimoog and decided against it? If anyone has any information at all on what this could be, I'd sure appreciate it! I'm happy to answer any questions about this synth."

"Jomox Sunsyn Mk1 eight voice analog synthesizer. This synth is very rare, less than 200 made and you don't see them come up for sale more than a couple times a year. There is a reason for that: they sound incredible! My favorite analog synthesizer, amazing analog sound that's very unique. NOTHING sounds like a Sunsyn. The routing and modulation capabilities are great and it's all very easy to use and hands on with minimal menu diving. The RCO's are fantastic and the variable four pole filter is one of the best I've used. It can do classic analog synth sounds but with the RCO and routing it reaches into new territory. This synth is in excellent shape and fully functional. This is a V1, very late SN 016x. Being a later SN it is a bit more stable than some of the earlier ones... I would take this over other modern synths like the Andromeda and older stuff like Memorymoog or Prophet 5. It seriously sounds that good, a king for pads and modulation effects."

Diamond Rings performs Runaway Love live in the Moog Sound Lab

Published on Apr 15, 2013 MoogMusicInc·232 videos

"Diamond Rings, aka John O' Regan, was a long way from Toronto when he stepped into the Moog Sound Lab, but he made himself right at home reshaping "Runaway Love" off of 2012's Free Dimensional. The androgynous glam star strays away from the up-tempo, euphoric dance cuts heard on his recent full-length to give way to an organic sound that is both raw and dreamy, thanks to an arsenal of Moog synthesizers.

O'Regan carries the song's lead on a Moog Guitar played through an MF-104M Analog Delay.

Keyboardist Karl Skene does double duty commanding melodic lines from a Moog Little Phatty while using a Minimoog Voyager for ambient modulated sounds. Skene used Ableton Live software to trigger programmed bass lines from the Voyager stationed in front of guitarist Graham Van Pelt, who also played Moog Guitar through an MF-102 Ring Modulator, creating an expressive tremolo effect.

Greg Santilly laid down the drums, using a Trap Kat drum controller to trigger 100% analog percussion from 3 Minimoog Voyager RMEs.

Diamond Rings reworks Runaway Love into something completely new while keeping the heart and soul of the original song.

"Siel Expander 80 Synthesizer
with RAM cartridge and dual output power supply.

Fully functional in very nice condition for a vintage 80's synthesizer. See the pics for the cosmetic details. It comes with the rare RAM cartridge, which is essential as it gives you 50 user slots for your patches, since without it you would only have 10 since the first 40 patches are presets. Also, it comes with the real deal power supply, which is from a DK80 keyboard, as these were designed to run off the keyboard power source and typically did not come with a power supply.

The Expander 80 is an 8-voice (DCOs) polyphonic synth with one 24dB SSM2045 filter, which does sound nice and similar to the SSM2044 found on other vintage classic synths (eg, PPG Wave, Korg Poly-6 Mono/Poly). To get more info, since I can not paste links into the listing, do a search for "Siel Expander 80 Resource", which will give you all the details. For example, surprisingly on this synth, the parameters are adjustable by Control Change messages. I tried it out with my E-MU X-Board and it worked great, just assign the CC number to a knob and tweak away. Also, it describes and adjustment to increase the resonance, which I have not done myself. However, from the way the filter sounds to my ears, it sounds like it was likely adjusted from the previous owner. Feel free to check yourself, if you can further improve the sound of the filter from where it's at now, this synth is going to sound fantastic because it sounds great as is, especially in the stacked (double oscillator) voice mode. Let me know if you're interested in a demo as I can quickly put together one, and it will give me an excuse to play with this synth another time before it's gone."

Moog Minimoog Model D SN 5446

via this auction

via the seller: "I bought this from Switched On Music Electronics in Austin. Serial number is 5446, which, along with the number of holes in the back, shows its desirability relative to other Model D versions. Have had it around four years. Used in the studio only. Recently put serious money into it with Sam at Three Wave Music here in Jersey. I bit the bullet big time on this one. Filter, modulation, oscillators, tuning...all core concerns have been addressed. All you may want to do is some keybed fluff. Everything else has been paid for. This is one gorgeous Mini. Sounds ridiculously good. I've loved having it, but I'm moving and need to lighten my luggage. You will flip out about this synth!!! Nothing like that sound.

Everything functions. No issues. I have no issues with it cosmetically either, but that's me. I totally love the way this one looks. It has lighter wood and I definitely prefer that."

Stereo Drum and Bass patch Grendel Formant Filter/ Trogotronic 277M

Stereo Drum and Bass patch Grendel Formant Filter/ Trogotronic 277M from Equinoxoz music solutions on Vimeo.

"This is something I wanted to try since I got the Grendel formant filters in stock, a full stereo patch in the drum and bass style.

I set up an ES4 to play the bassline, there is a sequence clocked from my Syncgen LSII in time with the loops coming from Ableton live.

Basically its set up so an E340 cloud generator in 8 Osc mode gets split into the two Grendels, setting different for the left and right channels, these outputs were then mixed via two Manhattan Mixers with a Z3000 MK2 doing the fat sine sub octave and the Triangle from that is going to a Happy nerding super sawtor just to add a bit more "grit" to the sound.

The outputs from the two mixers go into the left and right channels of a Trogotronic 277M which is the VCA for the output of this patch, it adds some great crushing distortion and with a bit of different settings of the drive, a bit more stereo separation and grit.

overall this was a super fun little high energy patch, a synergy between the loops and the machines.

I hope you enjoy :)"

Bebot - Robot Synth

Published on Apr 15, 2013
http://apps4idevices.com/read/bebot-robot-synth
"Bebot is a feature packed polyphonic synthesiser that was the very first music app to fully utilise the full touch screen to control the sound. It has a single oscillator with 4 waveform choices and a sub oscillator with another 4 waveform options, including both one and two octave options below the main oscillator. It also offers distortion, chorus and echo effects, as well as y axis expression within the settable timbre/resonant range, and great sounding filters. There are 25 presets to get started with, but you can also save your own creations. It comes with scale presets and the option to create your own custom scales so you can simply slide your finger across the screen without playing the wrong notes. Another great feature is the ability to Autotune each note to varying degrees or choose not to use Autotune to get that great fretless sound. Bebot also is AudioBus compatible for use in the input slot, so you can directly record your performances into other compatible apps. The video below runs through most of the preset sounds and then continues on to explore all of the other options available, and the audio track shows a few examples of the expressiveness of the app using a few preset sounds. Bebot is a very impressive synth with great expressive control, and with AudioBus compatibility it is definitely a must-have synth, which makes it ... A Killer App!Review by Nick Trass"

The Alesis patch was originally assigned saw waves as the Korg was assigned pulse waves so I went with all pulse on the Ion. I also created similar detuned seperation between all three oscillators on each synth. At around 2:05 I add external delay equally to both synths. From my experience thus far the Alesis Ion seems to be slightly phatter while the Korg seems to be slightly warmer. The Korg patch uses a Moog Filter. I tried several different filters on the Korg but this one ultimately won out for keep up with the Ion. However, the P5 filter did a good job as well.

Thanks for watching!"

"another Erthenvar / Make Noise lunchbox jam, this time sans vocals. just a nice slow buildup, a little tense but with some really pretty sounds from the DPO that almost remind me of plucked strings. abusing the FSRs in this one. monotribe provides periodic kick drum, sustained low bass and white noise. sequence from Littlemidi on the iphone again. any questions? feel free to ask in the comments below!"
