Kawai K3m rare Digital/Analog Hybrid Rackmount Synthesizer

via this auction

"It features a programmable digital waveform where you can specify the harmonic content of a waveform allowing for added flexibility and range of sounds. What's really neat about the K3 is that (unlike the K1) it has analog filters and envelopes! So although the sound may be digital at first, it sure does get warmed going through the filters. The low pass resonant filter even has its own envelope generator.

There's also a high pass filter, a highly flexible LFO and a fat Unison mode. The K3 is an interesting synth, nicely bridging the gap between the analog and digital domain of vintage synthesizers. It is further complemented by a lush stereo chorus with seven different settings.

The programming interface is a joy in that each parameter has a separate selection button on the front panel, for every edit function possible - no scrolling through menus. It easy to program, and also a great learning tool due to this system.

The K3m is a thing of beauty. It can sound like a PPG or an analogue poly, plus with some nice quirky features. The bass end can be trouser-shakingly boomy if you want, if not then the high cut filter comes to the rescue. Also bass sounds in Mono mode are enormous. You'll love the strange ethereal chord patches the machine produces, and the velocity controlled oscillator balance is a great feature, when playing “live” as expression or when using repetitive sequencer lines with random velocity parameters. The K3 keyboard was enormous, but this synth is a svelte 2 space rack mount and the power supply is internal.

You'll have fun with this box, it's a blast to use..."

4 THEREMIN COMPARISON

Published on Aug 11, 2013 copperleaves·60 videos

"This is an original composition I wrote to demonstrate and compare the sound of four different theremins.

The first one I play is the Moog Ethervox. Many people believe this is the finest and most versatile theremin ever made. It was designed and manufactured in the late 1990's and is fully MIDI capable (although I am playing it here strictly in the traditional way).

The second instrument is the 1929 RCA theremin that once belonged to the late Hollywood thereminist, Dr. Samuel Hoffman. This instrument can be heard on the soundtracks of over forty major motion picture soundtracks of the 1940's and 50's.

The third theremin is the last theremin designed and made by the late, wonderful, Robert Moog. It is called the Etherwave Pro. This instrument is in a burled maple cabinet I made for it myself, and is the only one of the four instruments in this video that I play while seated.

The last theremin, the one with the Art Deco lightning bolt antennas, belonged to Leon Theremin's business partner and personal assistant, Julius Goldberg. This is the only one of the four theremins that I am using an effect with. The sound you hear is the voice of the theremin going through an Electro-Harmonix TALKING MACHINE which gives it the haunting sound of a human baritone. I thought this might be an interesting contrast with the other three instruments.

All four of these theremins are amplified identically, and their sound is coming through the "Claratone" speaker you see behind me. This speaker was specially designed by Reid Welch for use with the theremin, and was named after the great 20th century thereminist, Clara Rockmore.

I would love to have played these instruments by walking from one to the other in a single shot but that is not possible. First of all, theremins are notorious for causing all sorts of interference problems with one another when there are several of them in close proximity and all of them are turned on. So for each of the theremins I play in this video, the other three had to be turned off.

The other big problem is that the spacing of the notes within the electromagnetic field is radically different for each of these four instruments, so it takes a few minutes to adapt your technique to the configuration of the theremin you're playing. All theremins are not the same. Most traditional instruments have a standard design and spacing - the standard piano keyboard is the same everywhere - but theremins are highly individual and each one is different."

Line 6 Tonecore DSP Developer Kit (Build Your Wwn FX DIY Effect Pedal)

"ACHANCE TO DESIGN YOUR OWN TOTALLY UNIQUE AND AMAZING SOUNDS FOR GUITAR ORBASS USING THE SAME CHIP AS THE POD 2.0

This pedal can be programmed to be a whole host of possible pedals including new and unheard of creations by anyone who has some programming knowlege or the willingness to learn and experiment.
the kit can be used over and over again for new ideas and if you make something you really like, you can save the module and buynew ones from Line 6.

What’s in the box?
The ToneCoreProgrammable Module, the Developer ToneCore Dock, a USB cable key to get themodule on and off and official LINE 6 power supply
Note: you will also need ot get the developers kit from here - http://www.vettaville.nl/page.php?id=100

Here is the low-down

How does this work?
The kit contains a special Line 6 Developer ToneCore Dock, which in addition to containing the Freescale Symphony audio DSP, audio circuitry and ToneCore Module docking slot, can be connected directly to a PC via USB. The ToneCore Programmable Module is customizable and stores DSP code in the FLASH memory of the on-board Freescale microcontroller. DSP code development is performed on the PC and then a programming tool is used to FLASH the MCU with the new DSP code through the Developer ToneCore Dock.

Huh?
You plug our pedal into your computer via USB, use the software we give you to write some fancy code, then shoot it back to the pedal, which now stores it in memory. Now when you plug in your guitar to the pedal, it does to the sound of your guitar whatever you’ve told it to do!

Can anyone do it?
That depends. If you have any experience writing software you’ll probably be just fine. If you don’t, and are willing to learn, we’ve made it possible for you to get started by giving you the example of a simple two-band EQ, and a step by step by guide to assemble the code and download it to the module.

This Dock contains all of the functionality of Line 6’s existing ToneCore Stereo Dock, but adds a mini-USB connector that is used for programming and testing development using a PC. The TCDDK also includes a new ToneCore Programmable Module that can be programmed via a PC through the Programmer Dock to produce any effect that the developer creates for download. Since the Programmable Module is Flash memory based, it can be used over and over again while experimenting with different algorithms. Once the desired algorithm is complete, the ToneCore Programmer Dock can be used to program additional ToneCore Programmable Modules (available separately) that can be resold directly by the developer.

The ToneCore Developer platform makes use of two powerful Freescale Semiconductor devices. The Programmer Module contains a product from the Freescale JM family of USB microcontrollers, a versatile single chip solution that handles all of the DSP firmware storage and downloading, user interface (including A/D channels for the pots), Flash memory, and a USB port for downloading and debugging of software.

The ToneCore Programmer Dock (and every Dock and ToneCore pedal Line 6 has ever produced) contains a Freescale Symphony™ audio DSP56364 signal processor, a 100 MIPS, 24-bit device ideally suited for high performance, low power consumption products like ToneCore. This Symphony DSP provides more processing power than the solution in Line 6’s original POD, making it powerful enough for a wide range of audio applications.

Thanks to Freescale’s new Symphony Studio Development Tool, everything required to develop software with the TCDDK is available online. By using the extensible development platform Eclipse, Symphony Studio provides DSP users a fresh way to develop, debug and simulate through an Integrated Development Environment (IDE). The software can be downloaded for free at www.freescale.com/symphonystudio.

In addition, the source code for a fully functional stereo 2-band state-variable filter is provided that demonstrates the complete functionality of the user interface and the audio processing. With this code, the developer can immediately start modifying the example to create their desired effect.

"A further development of the LFO modulating a VCO's waveform to modulate a Miniwave effect. In this case it's an SSL Quad LFO modulating the pitch of a synced Q106 VCO running at audible speeds.

That VCO then alters the cutoff of a highpass filter into which a second Q106 is fed, which then powers the miniwave.

At various points I'm playing with the octave settings on the slaved oscillator. A Q960 sequencer provides the basic pitch while its second channel determines the waveform selection on the Miniwave.

The horrendous jet-engine crescendo is derived from the resulting cacophony being fed into a Boss SX-700 effects processor with lots of chorus and delay at heavy regen settings."

ADDAC270 Intuitive Quantizer

via DUBBHISM where you'll find the full review.

"Information about the ADDAC207 Intuitive Quantizer was published on the ADDAC website some time ago, but they've started selling it only recently. It fills the gap between simple quantizers like the Doepfer A-156 or the Analogue Systems RS-260, and more complex beasts like the Analogue Systems RS-130. The user interface looks a bit like the Intellijel designs uScale but the ADDAC is more versatile.

Quantizers are typically used to process the cv-output of an analog sequencer, either correcting/tuning the cv values, or using advanced options to filter out certain values for creative effects. You can also quantize continuous controllers like a Theremin or feed an LFO, random noise, or any other cv-signal to the cv-input. Think of it as an autotune-plugin for modular synths ;-)..."

In 1983 AMDEK changed its name to Roland DG and dropped the entire line of music equipment to concentrate on computer products.

Project - MONOTRON Acid Thing

Published on Aug 11, 2013 squidfanny·149 videos

squidfanny on eBay (RSS)

"An old project, revived from the dead for a Monotron experiment. This synth was originally a TB-303 clone (known as the FB383), which I sadly killed after getting carried away with some modifications some years back :(
I recently managed to bring it back to life, and despite the permanently damaged tuning scale, it's been successfully combined with a Monotron!

So - The Monotron is triggered by various points inside the tb-303 clone. Non provide accurate pitch tracking, but I can tap into the envelopes, gate & various other interesting spot's.

The fun really happens when the Monotron is used as a modulator, to disrupt and screw around with the 303's internal systems. There's alot of weird modulation and bypassing going on with this machine, the best sounds are thanks to the 'Rezzy/Acid FM' on the 303, which I shamelessly copied from Circuitbenders.co.uk. It really is an amazing sound! Kudos to CBUK.

Sounds ace when the Monotron is used as the modulation source for the FM mod, and at various point's in the vid I'm using digital drums, sent through the Monotron, to act as the modulator.
The result is some fierce acid distortion and noise damage....

This is a 'work in progress'. Definably needs some more work, but the initial results are promising :)

Big thanks Mark for your generous gift of the Monotron :)"
