Simplest DIY Moog / ARP - Sounding Synthesizer

"This is a PWM oscillator through a light-controlled resonant low pass filter. My objective was to produce a true synth sound with minimum parts count and all commonly available parts. Made from all generic op-amps. It can be tuned to any scale via the eight tunable potentiometers. Through a nice amp it absolutely GROWLS with earth-shaking bass frequencies."

"The analogue VCO generates four waveform shapes: Triangle, saw tooth, rectangle and needle-impulse. The base pitch can be switched over a four-octave-range, while fine-tune can be specified within a range of one octave. The sub-oscillator with two mixable octave settings completes the NANOZWERG’s sound foundation. The noise generator can alternatively replace the sub-oscillator to create non-harmonic sounds. Finally, a glide-control can be used to tie notes with portamento.
The state-variable multimode-filter runs with 12dB slope per octave and offers Lo-, Hi- and Bandpass-modes as well as notch-filtering and resonance up to self-oscillation. Cutoff can be modulated manually, by LFO and by the ADSR-envelope simultaneously. In addition, pitch-dependent cutoff-frequency can be achieved using the key follow function. Finally, LFO modulation can be replaced by the VCO output signal.
The LFO offers four waveform shapes including sample & hold as well as a one-shot-function, where the selected waveform is played only once after a gate-trigger, thus imitating a simple envelope. Besides the cutoff-frequency, the LFO can also modulate the pitch or the VCO rectangle’s pulse width.
The ADSR-envelope allows modulation of the filter’s cutoff-frequency and the VCA-output, with positive or negative excursion. Selectively, the VCA can also be opened by a gate-trigger to free the envelope for exclusive filter use.
For integration into a modular system or use with an analogue sequencer, NANOZWERG offers several control inputs. There is CV/Gate for pitch control and note length as well as CV-inputs for cutoff-control, the VCA and LFO speed. The LFO also offers CV-output.
The audio-input allows signals to be fed into the VCF and VCA. NANOZWERG can be controlled by MIDI from any compatible keyboard or DAW. Note commands are received as well as pitch-wheel (+/- 2 semitones) and modulation-wheel data, the latter controlling the filter’s cutoff frequency.
MFB’s NANOZWERG has the following dimensions: 140 x 130 x 35 mm.External power supply included."

I myself was not impressed with the sound when I received it. I think either the engineers got a few values wrong or possibly the wrong value surface-mounted components were laid by the automated robot during manufacture. either way it just takes a few components in the right place to transform the snare and turn the Volca Beats into a far more realistic 808 beast!"

The mod makes for a much cleaner and useable snare than the distorted rubbish that the KVB is shipped with, and the addition of the triangle sound mod to the hats gives some nice variation to the unit as well. This is discussed further on the Gearslutz forum here: http://www.gearslutz.com/board/electr...
I hope you get this mod up and running yourself and the best of luck! it sure transforms the KVB into a more sophisticated beast."

Moogfest teams up with Audiotool for a “Moogfest Audiotool Competition”

"Audiotool launches a Moogfest Competition for producers, winner gets to play at Moogfest and runners up get released on a compilation.
Los Angeles, CA, February 19, 2014: Starting today, Moogfest is inviting anyone to produce a track using the free cloudbased audio workstation Audiotool and submit it to the Moogfest Competition. The winner gets to play a set at Moogfest in Asheville, North Carolina, taking place from the 23rd to the 27th of April 2014. The winner will also, along with 7 runners up, have their tracks included on a limited edition release which will go out to the artists, VIPs and press who will be attending Moogfest.
Participants will have until the 25th of March to submit a track to the competition. A select panel including some of the Moogfest artists will then judge the tracks, with the the winner being announced on 1 April 2014.
Moogfest is the annual festival that celebrates the innovative spirit of founder Dr. Robert Moog, an American pioneer of electronic music and inventor of the Moog synthesizer. Audiotool's innovative platform empowers emerging artists to create on their own terms. We are excited to offer Audiotool's rich community of musicmakers an opportunity to be a part of Moogfest 2014.”

via Jim Smith
"NEW INTERVIEW!! Introducing #010 on iheartsynths with Tiny Wight of The Deadites. See how this masked maniac creates his brand of monster-killing synthpop and take a tour of his gorgeous studio space. "
"I♥SYNTHS: When did you start collecting synthesizers and what was your first?
Tiny Wight: I got my first synth – a little Casio MT-100 – back around 1985 when I was 11 (for “band”). I graduated to the equally terrible Yamaha PSR-47 when I was 13 or so. At 16 I picked up an Ensoniq SQ-1 and things started to get interesting. All of the early Deadites songs were made on this keyboard and an Alesis DM-5 module slaved to the onboard sequencer. I wrote with this combo plus an E-mu Orbit for about a decade, from 1990-2000.
Somewhere in the mid-1990′s, I started using a computer pretty extensively for songwriting, but mostly for sequencing and mixing. I picked up Propellerheads Reason v1 shortly after it came out towards the end of 2000 and used versions of that more or less exclusively until 2012, when I said, “F#*$& this sh#*&. This isn’t fun at all anymore”, and started my synth collection with a limited edition Moog Little Phatty Toxic Edition. Once I got my hands on it, my fate was sealed, and my wallet literally exploded, permanently injuring my right buttock."

"A second Morley Serge video.
Mainly exploring the Analog Shift Register (ASR).
and the Triple Wave Shaper (TWS)
Lovely acid mixed with dripping water.
Ken says that most of the PCBs date from around 1974/75.
...predating the rise of the Roland 303 by nearly a decade.
The 1973 serge filter is a 2 pole, 12dB LP & HP.
(With 6dB slopes on the BP).
Most of the acid sounds are care of the 12db High Pass.

"Wogglebug providing random CVs for the Rene which is triggering the DPO's final Oscilator, merrily chewing away at itself. A steady clock to the SSM filter in self-oscilation mode provides the kick."

Roland's first virtual analog synth.
via Wikipedia: "The Roland JP-8000 was released in early 1996 as part of the first wave of virtual analog modeling synthesizers (VA synths). Others from that period included the Clavia Nord Lead (1995), Korg Prophecy (1995), Access Virus (1997) and Yamaha AN1x (1997). While the functionality, sound, and architecture of the JP-8000 differs from these other synthesizers, it shared the same purpose of recreating the unique sound and functionality of classic analog synths. The JP-8000 was viewed at the time as the modern incarnation of the classic Roland Jupiter-8, from 1981. The programming interface and synthesis options are very similar to Roland Jupiter-6 as well. The JP-8000 sought to reproduce the warm tonalities and sheer analog power of its older, bigger brothers, of course with a modern slant, adding all kinds of features, from motion control, to RPS, to the fabled Super Saw oscillators and old-school controllers such as an arpeggiator and an assignable touch response ribbon control..."
