Seriously one of the best bangs for the buck in the entire modular world. 8 Step Sequencer, X&Y axis CV Joystick, 3 VCOs, 2 envelopes, 3 LFOs, 4 mults, 2 VCAs, and a multimode HP/LP VCF! It is identical to the Vostok except it has an extra LFO and 2 extra VCAs instead of the pin matrix. I find these much more useful, since you can actually use them to expand the sonic palette beyond that of the Vostok..."

Zoom-O-Tron 505 Analog Synthesizer (May 2014)

Published on May 21, 2014 Haxxor Soniq·45 videos

HAXXOR on eBay

"CAUTION - This video contains Flashing Images and Weird Sounds.

Zoom-O-Tron 505 is a Circuit Bent Synthesizer & Sequencer built using a Korg Monotron and a Zoom 505 Digital FX pedal.
Both machines have been heavily modified, and combined with a sophisticated Step-Sequencer - It will Sequence, Sync, Trigger Gate & Modulate both machines, AND the Steps can be 'Played' using buttons and a rotary knob.

TThe Step-Sequencer includes a bolt-bay which will Scramble, Disrupt & Distort the built-in ZOOM Fx Processor. It can be used for glitch effects with delicious Ring-Mods, or for creating Rhythmic patterns of Glitched out weirdness & Distortion.
There is a programmable GATE, which is used to Mute & Chop the outgoing audio from the FX processor.

The Zoom 505 is a great little FX processor, with a grainy Lo-Fi sound - It now also has a additional modulation knob, courtesy of an LTC1799 'Precision Oscillator'. It even has a new 'Loop' feature, which allows it to sample and loop external audio!

The Monotron is a real Analog Synth - it's tiny, but it now has a 'VCO Boost' knob which really beefs up the sound. It also has a 'VCO Mute' Switch, that mutes the Oscillator and opens the VCF Gate, so that the Self-Oscillating filter can be played without needing the touch the ribbon (Keyboard).
Finally I've added a squelchy resonance FM Mod, which morphs the sound of the Monotrons VCO with the filter's resonance....

This video is made of lots of short clips recorded over a few weeks. This has been a fascinating project, and I wanted to record as much as I could. Those who are familiar with my work will know that my primary interest is in producing fascinating electronic sounds, which are unique / synthetic / never heard before and generally outside to the capabilities of conventional synthesizers. Sometimes i'st nice, sometimes it's mind-blowing and sometimes it's just nasty... Take it for what it is - experimental electronic audio.

It is very rare, as only 777 were ever produced, and is special in that it is not a 303 clone (though it can do the 303 thang very well) but rather it's own acid synth that can go WAY above and beyond the capabilities of even a devilfish 303. "SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--eBay Inc. (Nasdaq: EBAY) said beginning later today it will be asking eBay users to change their passwords because of a cyberattack that compromised a database containing encrypted passwords and other non-financial data. After conducting extensive tests on its networks, the company said it has no evidence of the compromise resulting in unauthorized activity for eBay users, and no evidence of any unauthorized access to financial or credit card information, which is stored separately in encrypted formats. However, changing passwords is a best practice and will help enhance security for eBay users.

Information security and customer data protection are of paramount importance to eBay Inc., and eBay regrets any inconvenience or concern that this password reset may cause our customers. We know our customers trust us with their information, and we take seriously our commitment to maintaining a safe, secure and trusted global marketplace.

Cyberattackers compromised a small number of employee log-in credentials, allowing unauthorized access to eBay's corporate network, the company said. Working with law enforcement and leading security experts, the company is aggressively investigating the matter and applying the best forensics tools and practices to protect customers.

The database, which was compromised between late February and early March, included eBay customers’ name, encrypted password, email address, physical address, phone number and date of birth. However, the database did not contain financial information or other confidential personal information. The company said that the compromised employee log-in credentials were first detected about two weeks ago. Extensive forensics subsequently identified the compromised eBay database, resulting in the company’s announcement today.

The company said it has seen no indication of increased fraudulent account activity on eBay. The company also said it has no evidence of unauthorized access or compromises to personal or financial information for PayPal users. PayPal data is stored separately on a secure network, and all PayPal financial information is encrypted.

Beginning later today, eBay users will be notified via email, site communications and other marketing channels to change their password. In addition to asking users to change their eBay password, the company said it also is encouraging any eBay user who utilized the same password on other sites to change those passwords, too. The same password should never be used across multiple sites or accounts."

" 201e - 4-panel Powered Boat w. upgraded 24-space PSU (rack ears included)

206e - Mixer/Preset Manager w. rear panel 1/4" output expansion
A six input, two output mixer with controls for level and stereo location. Two of the locations can be voltage controlled; the remaining four can be continuously panned.

A preset manager is also incorporated as well as dual 1/4" rear panel output.

261e - Complex Waveform Generator
The Model 261e Complex Waveform Generator features voltage-controlled modulation of pitch, amplitude, and timbre, and a multi-dimensional, voltage-controlled timbre space. All of the 261e's timbre processing is performed by analog circuitry, thus eliminating the aliasing that can be introduced by waveshape table driven systems.

A separate modulation oscillator can be synchronized to the principal oscillator or to note-on MIDI messages. Its waveshape is voltage controllable, and can be continuously varied from sine to pulse. The modulation oscillator can track the pitch of the principal oscillator with variable offset.

In conjunction with the model 225e MIDI Manager, the 261e's pitches respond to internally routed MIDI messages. Up to four 261's can peacefully co-exist in a single system, each with its private MIDI channel.

As in all 200e series modules, the settings of the 261e's pots and switches can be memorized as a part of a preset configuration.

266e - Source of Uncertainty
The Model 266e Source of Uncertainty is a general source of musical unpredictability. Divided into 4 sections, each section serves a unique function.

Noise comes in three flavors. White noise is electrically flat, but acoustically balanced toward the high end of the spectrum (+3 db/octave). Integrated white noise has a low spectral bias (-3 db/octave). Musically flat noise has a flat spectrum (constant energy per octave) and is a particularly useful source for subsequent processing.

Fluctuating Random Voltages are continuously variable, with voltage control of bandwidth over the range of .05 to 50 Hz, making possible changes that vary from barely perceptible movement to rapid fluctuation.

Quantized Random Voltages change on receipt of pulses. Their number of states is voltage controllable from two to twenty-four, and their distribution can be varied both spatially and temporally.

Stored Random Voltages have three parameters under voltage control. Degree varies the amount of randomness; chaos alters the distribution from just a little uncertain to total chaos; while skew biases the randomness toward one extreme or the other.

All settings of the 266 may be stored and recalled under control of the model 206e preset manager.

291e - Triple Morphing Filter
The 291e Triple Morphing Filter consists of three voltage controlled filters operating independently or in parallel.

The amplitude, center frequency, and bandwidth of each filter may be independently voltage controlled. Each may be modulated with externally applied signals.

The morphing capability might be described as moving through a series of snapshots of the filter, with each snapshot consisting of a complete description of the filter parameters, and with each parameter continuously varying between snapshots. Morphing is accomplished with an applied voltage, or alternatively can be initiated with a pulse, with each stage time independently set. Up to eight stages may be employed.

A solo switch provides editing convenience, and an expand input allows ready expansion of the filter.

All of the 291e's settings may be stored and retrieved with the model 206e preset manager"

Buchla 285e Frequency Shifter / Balanced Modulator

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"This module is the e series reincarnation of the 285. A long time coming, but well worth the wait.

The top section performs frequency shifting; up and down outputs are simultaneously available. The reference frequency can be externally applied or internally generated; the latter can be voltage controlled and f.m. modulated.

The bottom section is independent, and functions as a balanced modulator of applied signals. The degree of modulation is voltage controlled, and the reference frequency can be internally generated or externally applied, as in the frequency shifter. A separate output is dedicated to classic ring modulation, a subset of balanced modulation.

All settings of the 285e can be stored and retrieved with the 225e or the 206e preset manager."

via the seller: "looks like the previous owner disfigured top of this TQ5, maybe trying to clean it with an acetone based cleaner. so to clean it up I had to sand and repaint the partial face w/ a silver/grey "hammered on" textured paint. it looks pretty cool and a lot better that it did. and while I was inside,i removed dead battery & I soldered in a new battery holder w/ replaceable 2032 battery, i did a factory reset & set day & time, item works great & sounds fantastic!"

"The TQ5 was an entry level FM Workstation in a keyboardless, sparsely decorated desktop unit. It takes after the smaller line of FM synthesizers like the DX-100, DX-21, DX-11, TX81Z, and FB-01. These featured 4 FM operators per voice, and 8 voices of polyphony. And like the latter three, 8-parts multitimbrality was featured. The TQ5 also had easy "Quick Edit" keys to access some basic parameters for instant tweaks. The TQ5 was capable of many of the good, the bad & the weird sounds FM synthesizers made.

The TQ5 featured built-in digital effects and an 8-track sequencer (with 8 song capacity) rounding out the "workstation" aspect of this machine. Designed for use as a stand-alone FM workstation or as a MIDI module, the TQ5 was poised to bring high-end FM sounds to entry-level users."

final promo web
Some features in more detail

2 VOICE AND 3 VOICE
While the original Polysix only features 6-voice polyphonic, unison and chord memory, this mod adds additional play modes.2-voice and 3-voice polyphonic modes are tradeoffs between the maximum fatness of the unison and the maximum number of voices of the polyphonic mode. (Polysix only)

POLYCHORD
Polychord lets you assign a chord consisting of up to 6 notes to any key of the keyboard. This can be done very quickly and is very suitable for playing live. Of course you can combine this feature with the normal arpeggiator or the powerarp (see below). This makes it possible to have a sequenced chord progression in the matter of seconds.

EXTENDED UNSION MODE
The unison mode on the Polysix is basically a monophonic mode, but lacking almost all of the features that most monophonic synths have. The extended unison mode this modification offers changes that.
- legato mode (no envelope retrigger when playing legato)
- key priority up / down / last
(Poly-61 users see Poly-61 notes)

unisonstatic
POWERARP
Powerarp is a feature best described as a sequencer or a custom arpeggiator.
You can define a sequence of up to 128 notes, which are then triggered by the arpeggiator clock. Up, down, updown and three different random modes are just a few ways to replay this sequence. You can use this with all play modes including Chord and Polychord, which means you can define complex chord progressions and replay them using the arpeggiator, an external trigger or using midi. You can also add breaks into the sequence which allows rhythmic arpeggiator sequences."

New CESYG LEVIN LED Voltage Indicator Eurorack Module

via CESYG

"Finally, after some time to get things just right, the next CESYG module is almost ready for release. LEVIN is an LED Voltage Indicator with a seemingly simple function: show an input voltage on a large LED bargraph. I think it does it rather well. Here's the first completed module after testing.

Note that in the above picture it looks like several LEDs are on at the same time, when in fact that is simply due to the LEDs sweeping upwards while the camera was capturing the image. To keep the current consumption under control the display is always in dot mode.

All that remains to do is finish writing the manual, get it printed and bound, and then package up the first batch of modules ready for shipping.

"From Wikipedia: 'Roy G. Biv is an acronym for the sequence of hues commonly described as making up a rainbow: Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo and Violet.
A rainbow spans a continuous spectrum of colors; the distinct bands are an artifact of human color vision.'

I decided to keep the sound close to the original. It took a lot of work but I had a lot of fun too. Big respect to BOC for making up such a splendid melody and catching the uncatchable.

Everything is mixed in Reaper. I used a lot of VST processing, especially on piano.

Beat was made from various samples and I used a little bit of bit crusher effect to emulate the sound of 12bit samplers which BOC apparently love.

The sample of the kid saying "hey" was taken from the original with low pass and high pass filter applied.

If you try to emulate their sound you instantly know why they always say things in interviews like how they shape the sound of hihat for a few days and about all the hard processing job. Yes, indeed, this is the hardest part in this type of music.

Synths used: Yamaha DX100 for piano, KORG Volca Bass for bassline, Waldorf Blofeld for main melody and the melody at 0:35, Yamaha AN1X for the melody at 0:45.

Sopranotron, Demo and Tutorial for iPad

Published on May 21, 2014 thesoundtestroom·273 videos

"Sopranotron from Omenie the team that brought us the excellent Mellotron M3000. This is simply superb."

iTunes: Sopranotron - Omenie Limited

"The first dedicated 'Virtual Soprano' instrument for iPad - add soaring operatic soprano tones to your recordings, or take a pitch-perfect Virtual Soprano on stage with you!

Here by popular demand is Omenie's M3000 HD 'English Soprano' library, provided as a standalone instrument. Caitlin Downie, gifted soprano and national treasure, has been painstakingly recorded and assembled into a huge vocal collection. 525 different samples, 15 different voices, with chromatic sampling over the M3000's 35-note range, and note stretching below and above the range to deliver 5 octaves in total.

3 distinct vowel vocalizations, 'soft' voices, 'forte' voices with huge projection and vibrato, staccato vowels and 3 different ensemble voices are provided. Two different playable instruments are available at the same time, one blended from a selection 3 of the 15 voices ('A/B/C'), the other a single voice ('D'). The 'D' voice may be assigned to programmable chord pads, or the two instruments may be played independently via class-compliant MIDI keyboards. 64 programmable 'Voicebanks' allow popular selections of voices to be saved and restored immediately for recording or performance.

Virtual MIDI on 2 separate channels and AudioBus support make Sopranotron a very flexible and powerful instument for adding vocal sparkle to recordings or live performances."

Roland Aira TB-3 + CASIO XW-P1 (sequencer play)

Published on May 21, 2014 Metatron's Cube·61 videos

"Starting to dig into the sequencer on the Casio XW-P1. I had 4 or 5 unused tracks as well. Just trying to get comfortable using the new menu layout on the new synth. Sounds beastly even with the tb-3 blasting away. The synth section is really big too, saw that it had 300-ish waveform types and went back to the sequencer...another day for that. Some fooling about for the first three minutes till I settle on some beat sounds. Thanks for watching/listening.

PollySynth Interactive Installation for Mobile Devices

PollySynth Demo Published on May 21, 2014

"Imagine having a signature synthesizer sound that followed you around in the real world.

What if your sound could interact with others in a physical space?
What does it sound like flying around the room?

PollySynth combines simple UI with fun character design to virtually eliminate the learning curve associated with synthesizers and the technology involved.
PollySynth is a multiplayer polyphonic synthesizer created by Secret Feature.
Synthesizers are controlled by your smart phone, and visualized as members of the PollySynth gang. Spatial audio effects add to the fun as characters respond to the controls and parameters.

PollySynth is currently available as a location specific experience. For inquiries please contact info@pollysynth.com.

Moscow Synthpozium Event Pics

The Moscow Synthpozium was held on April 30, as posted here. The following are some pics of the event sent my way via Andrey Erikashvili. The first eight are from this set. The rest with the MEMORIUM logo are exclusive to this post. Enjoy.  You can click on each for some full size wallpaper.

Roland had a strong presence with the new AIRAs, along with plenty of modular gear, DIY & some classic vintage synths.  Check out the Atari system with custom Jenko keyboard controller with Buchla style knobs.
