"I was recently asked to play a synthesizer rendition of Douglas Lilburn's Aotearoa Overture in a two minute performance as part of the APRA 49th Silver Scrolls awards in Wellington. I thought I'd recreate it in my room for you to watch :)

I'm using a Roland SP-404SX sampler, Minimoog Model D, original Korg MS-20, Roland Juno 106, Strymon BigSky for verb and Electroharmonix Cathedral for stereo ping pong delay on two sends.

The sampler I use to trigger sections that I've created mainly by multitracking the Minimoog (the intro has 11 Moog layers and 2 Juno parts) into Logic. Hope you enjoy it!"

These patch techniques were used in my recent performance, Tenderloin Rain Dance - http://youtu.be/30_pgfnU3Go.

Though this is illustrated on a Serge the concepts apply to many modular synthesizers. Let me know how you apply this on your modular synthesizer.

Instructables DIY iPad Clothespin Piano

"Here's a hack that creates a piano interface which tricks the iPad into thinking it's being played directly by your fingers. All materials together cost less than $5.
Full step-by-step instructions here: http://www.instructables.com/id/Cloth..."

"Touchscreens are great, but when it comes to playing music on them, the lack of physical keys can be a drag. So I decided to round up some household stuff and make a piano keyboard that tricks the iPad into thinking it's being played by your fingers (with the help of some clothespins and aluminum foil)!

It's quite easy to make a capacitive piano interface, and all told it cost me less than $5. All you need is some wooden clothespins, foil, markers, tape, rubber bands, stiff cardboard, and some patience to cut and piece it all together.

For this project you'll need:

Clothespins (1 for each key you want to make)
Rubber bands (10-20)
Aluminum foil
Pens, pencils, or thin markers to prop up the keys
Tape (any kind is fine)
Stiff cardboard or card stock for the base (I repurposed a sturdy folder)
Some basic cutting tools (scissors and something to make small holes)
Straight edge or ruler for drawing lines"

Fonitronik Cascade 4hp Flexible Mixing & Attenuverting Toolkit on Sale

Follow-up to the video posted here. The Fonitronik Cascade 4hp Flexible Mixing & Attenuverting Toolkit is now available at Thonk.

Some details via the online manual here:

"Back in 2007 I sold DIY PCBs for an attenuverting mixer designed for eurorack. This project eventually turned into the 1st fonitronik product that came into the stores early in 2010. The module provided 4 channels and a final summing stage with a simple RC network to remove DC offset, when desired. Alas, with 12HP the module itself was rather large. Too large for a lot of people today. So I decided to redesign the module and I am now proud to be able to present the successor of the fonitronik mh01 as a DIY project via THONK, the CASCADE triple attenuverting mixer/processor in 4HP only. It does MIX, INVERT, ATTENUATE, ADD GAIN The module provides 3 channels of ‘attenu-gain-vertion’, each with it’s own bicolor LED. The input of each channel is normalled to a voltage source. There are two modes of mixing the three channels , which could be set by a jumper: CASCADE: output of channel #1 is mixed into channel #2 (as long as no cord is patched into output 1), output of channel #2 is mixed into channel #3 (as long as no cord is patched into output 2).
PARALLEL: both the outputs of channel #1 & #2 are mixed into channel #3 (as long as no cords are patched into the outputs).

Again, inputs are normalled to an internal voltage source. As soon as you patch the inputs they are removed from that source. The outputs are normalled to the internal mixing (depending on mode jumper), however, as soon as you patch the outputs they are removed from the internal mixing. This makes this module very versatile. Just guess: when using channel one for attenuverting a signal (Fig. a) you could still use channels 2 & 3 to attenuvert and offset another signal"

"Wherever possible I tend to use a sub oscillator to make a sound more solid and deep. I also prefer using modular and semi-modular synthesizers, as they allow more space to experiment and be creative while you work. It’s also important to leave subtractive synthesis behind and try to take new roads if you want to make interesting and innovative sounds. And the most important thing is to take some fresh air after you’ve finished working on a new patch!

ZenSound has created numerous high quality sound banks for virtual instruments such as Bazille and Alchemy. They also have a fantastic free sound bank for Tyrell N6."

Ginko Synthese & The Arduino Synthesiser

via Jan Willem of Ginko Synthese

"We all need the auduino in our modulars... they sound gritty and nice, you can make a lot of dirty sounds with it.

I am going to make a DIY kit for it to transform it to an eurorack module... my question: do we need all those attenuators?

I think it is good to be able to offset your input cv and especially for lfo inputs you will be happy with an attenutor.
What is the auduino? see the video here: http://youtu.be/1LKmtJHSLF0 [below]

There are some functions I rarely use... So I prefer to skip two cv inputs and wire the most functional 3 with attenuators.
Since the auduino is fully open source you can choose your own input layout for changing the functions on of the cv inputs... that makes it easier to choose for 3 inputs instead of all 5 i think.

My idea is to make these kits as cheap as possible like €50,- or so just make the pcb and frontpanels and add some parts. you will only need to solder yourself... and add your own programmed arduino to the headers"

Korg PS 3200 Rare Analog Synthesizer Superb Condition SN 210192

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"Here is a write up from RL Music of the work done on this unit;

Restoration Status: KSR & other RL Music Service Partners now undertaking full restoration.

Remarks: It’s a real privilege to own this wonderful and rare 1970s vintage analogue Korg PS3200 polysynth, and we’re very happy to be able to offer such an amazing instrument for sale.

The PS3200 is a fully polyphonic, 16 memory semi-modular system incorporating divide-down technology driving 2 VCO’s and micro tuning ability. The technical specification aside, this instrument defines the word “ambient” and has the most wonderful warm, rich and charecterful sound that any vintage polysynth can deliver….a truly unique machine.

This PS3200 has very recently been extensively operationally overhauled so is in perfect working condition but KSR will fastidiously go over the whole machine for us as it’s being stripped down and rebuilt. Due to it’s age and wear, we are having the panels re-finished on this which includes re-spraing and re-screen printing etc. In addition, we are commissioning Lamond Design to build a new sold Walnut Cabinet (renewable resourced) for the synth and keyboard. This level of restoration is a significant investment in time and resources but for such a rare and historically important synth it’s worth the effort and expense. Once the restoration is complete this will without doubt be the best condition PS3200 in the world.

We have also purchased a brand new Kenton MIDI retrofit Kit for this PS3200 which will be fitted as part of the overall restoration work, so this instrument is sold with MIDI functionality."

Simmons SDS9 Electronic Drum Synth/Brain with Midi SN 003534

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"The official description:
The SDS9 is a 5-drum kit, comprising bass, snare and 3 tom-toms, triggering up to 40 complete “drum kits” (20 factory and 20 programmable presets).

Hitting a specific pad triggers the corresponding channel on the ‘electronics’. A microprocessor controls the dynamic (or volume) of each individual ‘hit’ giving a sensitivity to playing previously unheard of in electronic drums: a ‘real’ drum feel, in fact!

The Simmons SDS9 gives you the sounds, feel and control of acoustic drums plus all the sounds and advantages of electronic drums.

To add to all this ‘reality’, the small pads (snare and toms) have a floating head, the snare also has a rim shot/cross stick facility and the bass pad is piston loaded – giving you the feel and playability of acoustic drums.

The SDS9 electronically synthesises the sounds of each drum. The bass, snare and toms use different methods of synthesis – each the most appropriate for the sound and control you require. The bass is software generated directly by the computer. The snare/rim are digital samples of acoustic drums. The tom-toms are synthesised using analogue circuitry. The tom also have unique ‘second skin’ switch to match the sound and response of a double headed acoustic tom.

The program/store memory facility allows you to build up your own drum sounds. These programmed sounds can be saved to tape, giving you almost limitless capacity to store new sounds, or recall previously stored sounds.

There is also a sophisticated automatic trigger that allows sounds to be reviewed without hitting the pads, and a mode where the drums can be triggered by button tapping.

The SDS9 is the first drum kit that has a built in MIDI interface. This is completely assignable in terms of voice changes and note values. By using the MIDI interface you can directly interface with many available keyboard synthesisers and play their voices from the pads. You can also use MIDI real time recorders/sequencers to record your playing and then playback the SDS9 exactly as you played it.

Another interesting feature of the SDS9 is its built in programmable echo. This programmable effect can be used for single slap-back echo or for long repeating echoes to produce stunningly unique rhythmic patterns and effects."

Steiner Parker EVI with Microcon

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"Around only 200 were produced between 1975 and 1979, they were each hand made by Nyle Steiner himself. This is not the later and most "common" Crumar Italian version but the original US version. It sounds far more better and has much more sound options. The sound module which comes in this early version is the legendary original Steiner Parker Microcon analog synth.

These particular EVI trumpet and Microcon module have been bought years ago as new old stock from the original Steiner Parker French importer. They have never been used except for testing. They are in close to new condition. They show a few light scratches here and there. Both have just been fully tested. They work absolutely great together, delivering this incredible deep, rich and edgy sound everybody is looking for!

Also, the Microcon works perfectly alone, without the EVI connected. It could be easily included in a complex analog synth setup, adding the unique original Steiner Parker sound from its very compact but versatile box.

The EVI would also work nicely once interfaced with any analog synth, giving a fantastic control of the expression.

The auction includes:

- Steiner Parker Electronic Valve Instrument – More infos here

- Steiner Parker Microcon Synthesizer Expander Module – More infos here

- Original case with key

- Connection cables

- Operation manual showing patches for interfacing the EVI with Steiner Synthacon, Arp 2600, Arp AXXE, Minimoog, Oberheim synths...
