Tiptop Audio: Z2040 LP-VCF Gets a New Look

Tiptop Audio: Z2040 LP-VCF from Tiptop Audio on Vimeo.

"Tiptop Audio: Z2040 LP-VCF (4-Pole Voltage Controlled Filter)

http://www.tiptopaudio.com

Music by ANGLE

http://www.angleproject.net

The Z2040 is our redesign of the most famous analog filter from the poly synths of the 80’s and features Tiptop Audio’s signature lush, big and creamy sound. Its frequency sweeps make thick bass lines and leads with great dynamics.

When modulated with audio frequencies through its various inputs, the Z2040 gets quite colorful and is capable of creating so many new sounds and textures as the forces of the incoming waves and their harmonics all blend through the filter’s non linear circuit.

When set with Resonance feedback fully up, the Z2040 transforms into a pure sine-core VC-Oscillator, great for making snappy percussive elements and whistling sounds.

A look under the hood will find that the heart of the Z2040 is a discrete design 4-Pole Low Pass filter with a similar core to that of the SSM2040 Filter chip used in the 80’s Prophet 5 Rev 2 synthesizer, and its brother the SSM2044 used in the famous early EMU samplers and PPG synthesizers of the 80’s. Both filters are considered by many as 'the best sounding filter ever.'

The Z2040’s four modulation inputs are built to handle CV and audio signals, enabling deep modulation of the filter core and passing signals.

A VC resonance input is provided to modulate and even clip the sine wave produced by the filter feedback loop.

A Frequency Modulation input (FM) provides dynamic filter sweeps and the unique VC-FM index allows modulation of the incoming FM signals.

On top of that, the Z2040 comes with an audio VCA that can be configured to act upon the input or the output of the filter."

Tom Oberheim Two Voice Pro: Excerpt from Yesterday Afternoon

Published on Oct 10, 2016 darkenergymedia

"While the New TVS Pro is a 'reissue' of the TVS of the classic SEM sound of the 70's, there are a few details that have transformed this instrument - once destined to sit atop a Hammond B-3 or in a multi-keyboard rack, the new TVS feels really at home playing with my modular systems, providing handy pitch and timing reference, and it makes a nice compact master keyboard for playing polyphonic synths without having to fire up the DAW.

ABOUT THE VIDEO:

The Tom Oberheim TVS Pro plays sequence #1, while supplying clock to the modular systems' sequencers.

- a Karp hi hat
- a Wiard kick
- a Tonestar grand casa
- MiniMod Bass
- Elements chunk
- Serge funk
- 2 Roland MKS 80 Super Jupiters pad, played from TVS Pro Keyboard Local OFF.

- a Wiard Pedal tone
- Wiard mayhem

- Serge and Nebulae suspense

The music in the video is performed live, without overdubbing or editing - special thanks to Anthony Baldino for sprucing up the mix before the shoot.

Thanks, Tom!

VOLTLIFE: Synthrotek ADSR percussion

Published on Oct 10, 2016 VOLTLIFE: Synthrotek ADSR percussion

"A quick demo of using Synthrotek's new ADSR module (see my previous video for a full demo: [posted here]) to shape noisy percussion sounds.

Like many people, I normally just use an AR envelope for percussion, since it's simple and snappy. But for some sounds such as claps and pseudo-gated snares with a sustained portion, an ADSR gives you the ability to carefully shape the initial hit, noisy sustain and release. VC control over the release and whole ADSR time allow for varied percussion sequences.

The ADSR is driven by short gates out of a Pittsburgh Game System, and it opens a Pittsburgh dual VCA. The VCA is fed with a mixture of two noise sources (band-passed white noise and a Braids in CLKN mode) and a nasty FM tone (a Rubicon pulse through-zero modulated by a Dixie II square). In the last part of the video I mult the ADSR output to the Rubicon's FM index to give it more dynamism."

For one thing, they include a full complement of features such as an Attack-Release envelope, LFO waveforms, and frequency and resonance controls. For another, they can be set to respond to dynamics in your playing, making them considerably more interesting than your standard effect pedals.

Some major features of this pedal include low-pass, band-pass and high-pass modes for utmost versatility, positive and negative modulation, effect soak (Drench) for dramatic effect-level distortion, three methods of triggering the LFO (normal, one shot —for auto-wah—and envelope key trigger), and three LFO waveforms: triangle, square, or sample and hold. The second in the Dave Smith Instruments' "In The Spotlight with the PRO 2" series is currently up with Robert Rich here.

"Robert Rich has helped define ambient music, with over 40 albums across four decades. Rich began building his own analog modular synthesizers in 1976, when he was 13, and later studied computer music at Stanford’s CCRMA while researching lucid dreaming. Rich has performed worldwide, and since 1982 his all-night Sleep Concerts became legendary. His 15-hour, Blu-ray Perpetual maintains this tradition. Rich’s sound design graces many films and preset libraries, and as a mastering engineer he has applied his ear to hundreds of albums. His latest release What We Left Behind is available on Bandcamp, CDBaby, and http://robertrich.com."

Dave Smith Instruments OB-6 and Sequential Prophet-6 Synthesizer Comparison

Published on Oct 10, 2016 SweetwaterSound

"Daniel Fisher, Sweetwater’s in-house synthesist, does an in-depth side-by-side comparison of the Dave Smith Prophet-6 and OB-6. As the demo will show, there are more similarities between the two synths than differences; but they each have unique features that may make one or the other (or both!) right for your music.

One important note: when the Prophet-6 is updated to OS Version 1.3.1 or higher, it gets two additional Flangers plus a Ring Modulator and a new Phaser, making the effects list of both the Prophet-6 and OB-6 much closer.

Since the sound engine for the Desktop Module versions of each synth are the same as their 49-key versions, this video is appropriate for all four products"

JASS-1 "Just A Simple Synthesizer"

Published on Oct 10, 2016 arvodz

"JASS-1
'Just A Simple Synthesizer'

My graduation project from Forsbergs Skola.

My idea was to make a synthesizer for people who can't afford one, due to them being very expensive.
So I came up with the idea of making a synthesizer out of cardboard, some wires, electric paint and a circuit board.

You apply the electric paint to the cardboard, then you connect the wires between the electric paint and the circuit board. And finally you load up the circuit board with whatever sounds you like.

And now you have a simple synthesizer."

"This is a rare FULLY FUNCTIONAL ARP PRO/DGX Pro Soloist III Model 2720 (serial# 0055!) It has only been used in my smoke-free home studio.

The Pro/DGX is a thirty preset monophonic analog synth based on the of the 1970's. The main difference is that the Pro/DGX had electronic switching (touch buttons) between its preset sounds whereas the older Pro-Soloist had circuit-based switching (rocker switches). It has 30 preset sounds to choose from, including Flute, Bassoon, Brass, Fuzz Guitar etc. Other features included pitch, portamento, vibrato, growl and wow effects. The keyboard has 37 keys with aftertouch sensitivity for volume, brilliance, vibrato, wow, growl, and even bend effects (all at once if you desire!). Please note: that the Portamento slider knob is missing; the sliders are inherently not very smooth (replacements are available on ebay; however, it is not known how smooth they are).

Unit will be professionally packed and insured for shipping."

1969 Hammond Innovex Condor GSM Guitar Synth PLUS Condor SSM Synthesizer Ovation

"If you're looking at this auction, you probably know a bit about these already. The Hammond Condor Innovex GSM was one of the first guitar synthesizers. It was the result of a collaboration between Hammond and Ovation Guitars. Jimi Hendrix was inspired to purchase one of these systems at Manny's in NYC...one of the reasons it piqued my interest. These are rare items to come by. It is about 45 years old and works but is in need of some TLC to get it back to optimal operation.

Included in this auction:
Rare 1969 Hammond Innovex Condor GSM guitar synthesizer
Condor (Ovation) Electric Guitar with hexaphonic pickup and hexaphonic cord
Original hardshell case for the guitar
Carrying suitcase for the GSM
Rare 1969 Hammond Innovex Condor SSM speaker system synthesizer
Hammond Innovex Condor SSM speaker system synthesizer (It works but I was keeping it in the event I needed spare parts)
Original carrying case for the SSM which should also accommodate the GSM (stabilizing feet are included)

I just played this for a number of hours, tried it in both mono and stereo modes and paired the synth pickup with the standard pickups. It needs some TLC on the electrical end but this thing is really incredible."

"Roland Jupiter 6 - Roland's Flagship Vintage Analogue Poly Monster.

Not much needs to be said for this machine. Easily one of Roland's best designed, best engineered, and best sounding machines of all time. This thing looks, feels and, most importantly, sounds like a real solid piece of musical machinery. 6 Voices, 12 oscillators of pure analogue brilliance, dual envelopes, Multimode Roland VCF's. So much versatility in the sound palette.

The Jupiter 6 is capable of some of the most Classic and nostalgic strings, rich brass and pads, ripping leads and synth sounds, and huge thumping bass lines. This thing is a serious bit of kit!

This machine has just come from a thorough service and checkup, and is ready for the stage or studio. The work completed is enough to bring this vintage beauty into the modern age, giving it a new lease on life for the years to come. It has been fully tuned and calibrated, and it sounds as solid as it looks."

Storm For Stu

"Made this jam over the course of two days for Stu over @ Eowave. ALL sounds are sourced from an Eowave Orage. The only effects that were used are delay from an Alright Devices Chronoblob and reverb from an Intellijel Springray on the arpeggiated chords. Everything else is the raw Eowave Orage being manipulated by either a Happy Nerding FM Aid, Stillson Hammer MKII or a Mannequins Just Friends. An Eowave Centre de Controle performed the MIDI and trigger duties. An Intellijel Quadra performed envelope duties.

All sounds were compiled and arranged in Ableton Live. Some sounds were reversed and spread out in the stereo field. No filters or EQ except for a mix/master rack in Ableton for final mixing.

I wanted to keep the sounds as pure as from the source as possible :)

Hang up your hangs ups and let your hearts be happy!"
