Brooklyn Synth Expo 2016 Set for November 12-13

via Delicious Audio where you'll find details on how to attend.

"On the heels of the last year’s third edition, attended by more almost 1200 musicians – The Deli Magazine NYC is proud to announce the Brooklyn Synth Expo 2016, a free event hosted at Williamsburg’s instrument store Main Drag Music, and scheduled for the weekend of November 12-13.

This year’s event is particularly exciting because some major manufacturers (including KORG, Dave Smith Instruments, Arturia and Elektron) will use it to launch or unveil for the first time some of their new models.

Visitors will be able to play with large format synths, tabletop and mini synths, gadget synths, Eruorack modules and effects by these manufacturers and more:

Yamaha CS-60 short composition

Published on Nov 1, 2016 raycastile

"After two rambling improvs [see here], I thought I'd do something more organized. This is a little composition, created in about three hours in the middle of the night on Halloween eve. The CS-60 is doing a theremin-like sound, backing up a choral sound on the Korg M1. The guitar is coming out of the Roland XP-30. You hear a little Yamaha Reface CP. The bass is played on the MoroderNova. Strings on the Ensoniq ESQ1. No arpeggiators on this one. It was played pretty loosely, with no metronome. The CS-60's pitch ribbon was acting up a bit, and you can hear it gurgle a little here and there. This is my last night before the CS-60 goes back to the tech, so this is probably the last video you will see from me for a few weeks."

"This auction is for one vintage used 1981 Sequential Circuits Pro One analog synthesizer keyboard project. I purchased this keyboard several years ago and intended to restore it but I never got around to it. This keyboard powers up and is working. Only half of the keys are working and they are all stiff. The pots and switches could stand to be cleaned. This synth has been in storage for a long time. With that being said, this keyboard is being sold "as-is" for parts or repair. Cosmetically, the keyboard shows wear including scratches and some dings on the wood sides but still looks nice overall (see pictures). The 'AMOUNT' knob under the modulation section is missing (see pictures). The plastic shaft is still there and the pot works fine."

Curious if this is a J-Wire version. If so the wires that make contact with the bus bar could just be bent. I once picked up a Pro-One for $125 because it had a stuck note. I opened it up, bent the j-wire back straight and all was good. No stiff keys though...

Update: see this video for and example of j-wires on a Micromoog.

ROLI Introduces New BLOCKS Modular Music Studio Wireless Instrument

Uploaded on Nov 1, 2016 ROLI

A bit like a Korg Kaossilator on steroids. Note the surface is slightly flexible in the last video.

"Introducing BLOCKS, the most accessible and versatile music creation system ever made, opening the world of music creation to everyone.

The Lightpad Block is an easy-to-use wireless instrument powered by our free NOISE app. Use its illuminated surface to shape sounds using 5D touch. Create beats, play melodies, record loops and build songs. Connect to other BLOCKS for more performing and producing power."

"The Lightpad Block is the center of the BLOCKS system. You make music through natural movements on the Block’s smooth, glowing, pressure-responsive surface. Drop beats and shape melodies by striking, sliding, and pressing your fingers on the surface. Illuminated grids help you find your notes. Light Trails guide you to learn musical gestures quickly. To get started on BLOCKS, all you need is a Lightpad Block and NOISE, the iOS app."

"NOISE is the iOS app that powers BLOCKS. It’s free to download on iPhones and iPads. On NOISE you choose from over 100 sounds to play on your Lightpad Block. You also use the app to record loops — so you can easily make a track. Everything works wirelessly. With NOISE, BLOCKS becomes as powerful as a professional-grade synthesizer."

"The Live Block and Loop Block make it even easier to access the features you use most to make music. At the touch of a button you can record your beats, play them back, switch scales, play chords and arpeggios, and more. They connect to your Lightpad Block with a click, putting even more control at your fingertips."

"You can make music anywhere with BLOCKS. Play it on your knees, or play it on your kitchen counter. Take BLOCKS to the park. Each Block is lightweight and fits in your pocket, so you can carry them around as easily as a smartphone. Everything is wireless, so you don’t even need cords. BLOCKS opens up a new world of music-making — and a world of new places to make music."

"Super cool vintage Paia Oz 3760 Synth. Originally built as a kit it is a simple sine wave monophonic synth with a multiple octave switch and a pitch bend touch pad. Very cool little synth that works great and is an excellent platform for running into pedals or manipulating with modules."

And the official press release via Novation:

"The latest update is an advancement to the Novation groovebox that introduces several user-requested features, and brings all-new sessions, samples and synth patches.

Since its launch over a year ago, Novation’s commitment to updating Circuit has brought transformative new features to the product. From Sample Import and Sample Flip to the Components suite of browser-based utilities, Circuit’s capabilities have gone from strength to strength with every new Firmware release. Circuit v1.4 brings even more features to Circuit, making it an even more powerful addition to any live or studio performance system.

In the run-up to the new release, Novation celebrated its favourite milestones in its campaign ‘The Evolution of Circuit’. Working in collaboration with London design house Studio Murugiah, 12 key milestones of Circuit’s life have been immortalised in illustrated form (which can be viewed here). From the birth of Circuit and the Start Something campaign, to Mike Will’s leaked Instagram post, to the time KiNK and CALC jammed with Circuit in an apartment, the illustrations chart Circuit’s path to the present day and the launch of the newest Firmware.

The latest update (version 1.4) brings a new pattern-length parameter for the drum tracks to enable polyrhythmic drum sequences, where previously the drum patterns were locked to 16 steps. Also, it’s now possible to switch each track’s patterns on the fly so you can create fast-changing fills and pattern-change effects. You can now change the colour of the sessions from the unit itself (instead of from the Components software), and there are new setup options to optimise Circuit’s interoperation with other MIDI hardware. Lastly, Novation have created brand new samples, synth patches and sessions, to give you even more inspiration.

Here's what's new:

Polyrhythmic Drum Patterns
You can now set the length of your drum patterns individually to create mind-bending cross-rhythms and pattern variations.

Instant Pattern Switch
Change patterns instantly and combine with automation for glitchy drum fills and beat repeats.

Session Colour Select
Now available from the unit; change your Session colour when saving.

Clock Settings
Improved setup page with more versatile MIDI control. Separate transmit and receive settings for MIDI clock.

Circuit Packs
All-new samples, synth patches and sessions to completely transform your Circuit. Use Components to load the new Circuit Pack and, of course, backup your existing work."

Listener - Novation Circuit 1.4 controlling Korg Poly61M, 0-Coast and the Marvellous Leploop.

Published on Nov 1, 2016 -CALC-

"Using the new Drum Pattern Length feature and some of the new sounds included with Novation Components pack.
This is more of an ambient listener rather than a show off performance and gets going after a short build up around 35 seconds in.

The new Pattern Length is a great way to set up evolving polyrhythms. Build them up and just leave em to it, they can go on for ages.
In this track The polyrhythms get tied back in by a regular sliced loop on the Octatrack and Leploop kick and hats (although they're set to irregular lengths too).

All the Synths are sequenced by the Circuit. It really is a magnificent box as just a MIDI sequencer for external stuff but the internal sounds are great too, the new patches with 1.4 sound really mature.

Synth 1 on Circuit is controlling the 0-Coast (Arp on) and Leploop Oscillators while Synth 2 is controlling a Korg Poly 61M off camera using a signature CALC sound.

Strymon Big Skies, Time Line and Deco provide the effects in this live take. Just a stereo mixer master was recorded. No other processing at all.

The tempo is set all the way down to 30BPM clocking from OT and Circuit is playing a 7 pattern musical phrase which is why the phrases feel so long and expansive (feeling like 28 bars).

On this performance I just hit play and then brought bits in and out... fiddling with the 0-Coast on the way. As I say its more of a listener than a spectacle.

Hope you enjoy it.

"SAE Institute presents its 2nd annual Synthposium on Monday the 14th of November, from 9.30am until 9pm, at its Melbourne campus, 235 Normanby Rd, South Melbourne. Following last year’s successful evening event the Synthposium has been expanded for 2016 into an all-day academic conference and evening session of workshops, vintage gear demos and jamming.

The daytime component of the 2016 Synthposium will be an academic conference running from 9.30am to 4.30pm. Leading synth academics such as Warren Burt, David Haberfeld, James Gardner, Nino Auricchio, Paul Borg, Amedeo D’Adamo, Michail Exarchos, Nevina Satta and Martin Koszolko will be presenting papers examining aspects of this topic. The Synthposium is also honoured to have Robin Fox, Melbourne sound artist and director of the Melbourne Electronic Sound Studio (MESS), and Les Craythorn, tonmeister responsible for the restoration of the Victorian College of the Arts’ EMS Synthi 100, joining the Synthposium to give keynote addresses.

From 4.30pm the Synthposium will host a series of workshops and demonstrations by leading Melbourne synth practitioners and theoreticians. From 7.30pm to 9pm the Synthposium will culminate in a demonstration of vintage gear and an open jam session with hand-on knob-twiddling action. This will include the presence of rare 1970s and early 80s synthesizers and other electronic music equipment especially loaned to SAE Institute by collectors and electronic music artists throughout Melbourne for this night only.

Attendance Cost:

If you want to hear what the StyloBuzz sounds like, I have uploaded a small YouTube video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_LewByXGNpg

Stylus: The stylus is pressed on one of the 13 keyboard pads to play a note.

Mode select: The mode is changed by pressing the S2 button and cycles through the 5 modes back to 1. The mode levels are adjusted using the vr2 potentiometer.
Modes:
1. Frequency: Shifts the frequency up or down.
2. Sweep Size: Controls the amount the frequency will shift up and down.
3. Sweep intensity: Controls how quickly the sweep frequency will change.
4. Chopper intensity: Changes how quickly the note is strobed.
5. Note Length: Change the length of the note.

The output is via a 3.5mm stereo socket which can be plugged into earphones, a computer sound card, mixer or amplifier.

*Please note a screw driver is required to fit the battery.

If you would like to build your own feel free, I have included the instructions here.

I hope that gives you a basic idea about how the StyloBuzz works, if you have any questions about it please feel free to convo me.

- Produce music together with KORG Gadget: ARP ODYSSEi can be used in conjunction with the "KORG Gadget" music production DAW app that has won numerous awards around the world. If both apps are installed, it can be used as the "Lexington" gadget inside the KORG Gadget app.
