Historic Moog Modular Coming to Bob Moog Foundation Booth at NAMM 2019

Update: the original image I had on top appears to actually be an EMU modular. Thanks to Malte Steiner in the comments for catching it. I moved the image below for reference and moved the image of the current owner Walter Holland on top. I also added an image of Don Preston with the Moog system in 1975.

via The Bob Moog Foundation

"We are excited to announce our return to the 2019 NAMM Show with an expanded booth presence celebrating our recently launched endeavor, the Moogseum. We will have two adjoining booths, 10310 and 10409, for the Foundation and Moogseum respectively, located in Hall A, the synthesizer section of the NAMM floor, with our friends from KORG, Casio, and Roland nearby.

As part of our Moogseum exhibit, and continuing our tradition of featuring unique, expansive Moog modular synthesizers, the Moogseum booth will be hosting a historic 1967 modular system previously owned by both Patrick Gleeson of Different Fur Studios and Don Preston of The Mothers of Invention. Both Gleeson and Preston will appear at the booth on Friday, January 25th, to pay homage to the synthesizer that helped shape their careers.

The modular is currently owned by Walter Holland of lauded Holland Synthesizers, designers of custom aerospace quality audio equipment. Holland and his musical partner Steve Leonard, keyboardist for The Cretones, will be demonstrating the synthesizer throughout the weekend.Holland’s monolithic four-tiered modular includes three prototype modules created by R.A. Moog, Co. in the late 1960s, making it a truly one-of-a-kind system."

Top: "Walter Holland with his Moog Modular synthesizer."

Middle: "Don Preston with the Moog Modular in 1975 at the Provisional Theater."

Bottom: Per the update above, "Patrick Gleeson assists Herbie Hancock in the early 1970s" on an EMU modular.

(OB-6) Steve Reich: "Six Oberheims"

Published on Jan 8, 2019 Kris Lennox

"Reich's 'Six Pianos', here performed on the OB-6 (x6). Wonderful piece of music - in my opinion even better on 6 synths than 6 pianos. So much more life can be brought to the music through filter sweeps etc.

Lots of time spent on this arrangement/performance - but worth the work. When heard on the Obi, it is easy to forget this piece was composed over 45 years ago. It sounds as if it were written yesterday!

PS dynamic variation is not through altering the volume; it is a product of filter/resonance sweeping.

The photo I took on the Humber Bridge. Worth a walk across if you are ever in the area. Much like this piece of music, it is a large, complex, imposing structure. With great views :)

Enjoy & all best
Kris"

New Antimatter Audio v3kt eurorack vector processor

Published on Dec 31, 2018 jeph Nor

via Antimatter

MAP: $199

"The V3KT is a 6hp 4-channel morphing vector mixer/quadraphonic panner with dedicated CV logic outs!

• Add vector synthesis, vector mixing, dynamic signal distribution, and quadraphonic panning of signals + CV sources to your synthesizer in just 6hp!

• Use LFOs, envelopes, sequencers, controllers, etc. to control the V3KT to generate unexpected patch animation from otherwise stale mixes.

• Upgrade your joystick/XY pad to a multi-function vector processor/controller! Combine various sources (synth voices, drum machines, radio, samples, spoken word, etc.), to create experimental morphing mixes.

• Create quadraphonic signal panning for surround performances. Distribute a signal to 4 separate effects (distortions, delays, filters, etc.), at modulated levels.

• Morph 4 oscillator waveform outputs to reproduce vintage vector synthesis techniques.

• Use as a CV re-distribution continuous logic center to re-imagine your existing CV sources. Utilize multiple inputs and outputs simultaneously in all modes to create complex, interactive patches."

Molten Modular 27 - Tenderfoot Lattice sequencer and Cells review

Published on Jan 8, 2019 Molten Music Technology

"Lattice is a delicious 12-step Eurorack sequencer that is the model of simplicity and terribly musical. Cells is an expansion that makes it playable and takes it in new directions. Here's my full review with lots of footage of the thing in action.

Intro - 0:20
Lattice - First Steps - 1:32
Step-down, Step-right and Reset - 13:24
Gating and envelopes - 19:15
Sequencing as modulation - 21:06
Cells Expander - 25:05
Reverse - Random - CV in - Gate - 28:01
Working up a patch - 33:53
Conclusion - 35:30
That'll do - 43:22"

via Tenderfoot

"Lattice is a 12-step sequencer laid out in 4 rows of 3 steps. These steps can be navigated horizontally, vertically, or sequentially through all 12 steps. Sending different clock inputs from related or unrelated signals can open up a whole world of evolving, polyrhythmic goodness."

Priced at $175.00

via this auction

"This rare, cool-ass number is a lush sounding analog mono synth, mostly organized around presets, but with some moderate tweakable functionality on board as well. This is a very well preserved specimen of a rare synth, and it’s served me very well over the years. Would love for this to go to a loving home. It’s in much better shape than most synths from 40 years ago.

A few exceptions:

-The power on light does not work
-No sheet music stand
-Missing cap on a slider (see photos)
-Some external scratches and wear

Other than those notable exceptions, it's in great shape!

(PS- yes, the touch bar still works perfectly!)"

It is also working perfectly without any problems.
- The faders and the push buttons have been cleaned and lubricated when needed.
- The inside of the synthesizer has been cleaned and checked.
- All the Output and MIDI are working.
- The ROM DATA are working.
- Original bank are available with the 2 cartridges A and B.
- There is some special data saved in the internal memory.
- You can load any preset you want with the sysex files available on the web.

This synth is one of the most powerful in the FM synthesis and is also a rare piece of gear for the collectors.

This one is especially in excellent condition !"

One of those obscure items from synth history. This is the first one to be posted on the site. Via the listing:

"I used this in my Kawai XD-5 drum module a long time ago and have since sold it, which I regret because it was a great sounding unique programmable drum module which sounded awesome....especially with its resonant filter which responded to velocity

I was hoping to buy another XD-5 at some point, which never happened, so I am not using this card anymore and it is of no use to me without an XD-5... so, If you have an XD-5 it could be useful to you.

It is a Sound Source Unlimited ROM card 'Rock/FX' Performance Voice Card with presets on it...64 single patches, 16 Kits and 16 output patches...if I remember correctly"

"The Unit Face and Readout are in Nice Shape. The Metal Case has some moderate scratches. No Structural Damage Noted. Missing One (1) Control Knob on the FM Adjustment as Pictured. Unit Powers-up and the Function Buttons APPEAR to Function Properly. When received the LED Readout was Barely Readable so I searched online where it was suggested to do a Reset to Factory Settings. While I was trying to figure out how to do a Reset I ran across the LED Contrast Adjustment and Changed it to a "3" Setting. No Other Changes were Made and the Settings and Additions made by the Previous Owner Remain Intact. The "FM" Adjuster which is Missing the Knob Does Change the Values in the Readout when Adjusted."

ELEKTRONIKA EM25 - Vintage Analog String synthesizer USSR Soviet Russian

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.
Published on Jan 8, 2019 GLvintageSHOP

"EM-25 is an interesting Soviet string-synth that looks and feels like a curious cross between Moog Opus 3, Yamaha SK15 and ARP Solina. Like other Soviet synths, has got a distinct sound of its own and can easily compete with synths that have grown to become classics.

Organ has great vibe - I like its etheral and gentle vibe in upper register. It has one percussive drawbar (again a plus for total tonal variety).
EM-25's organ is quite interesting, potent and woody with full registers, almost acoustic sounding. With a touch of LXP-1 reverb, a single drawbar turns into real Cathedral organ!

Synth section (called brass on EM-25) is VCO fixed preset on both, with full filter section - but only one filter for all voices.

All said, EM-25 is unique and rare and a real stringer."

"The audiowerkstatt midi-clock-divider v2 divides the MIDI-clock of the MIDI-master, whereby the MIDI-slave runs correspondingly slower. The division-ratios are 1/1, 1/2, 1/3, ..., 1/8, 1/9.

If the division-factor 1/1 is selected, the MIDI-clock is simply passed through. With the division-factor of 1/2 the MIDI-slave runs at half the speed. So 16ths-notes will be 8th-notes and the loop is twice as long.

Very useful to double the loop length of the MIDI-slave (eg MIDI-sequencer or [audio-]looper). When using the division-factor 1/8 and an originally one bar long loop runs over 8 bars.

And good for experimental musicians, especially if an odd division-factor is selected and MIDI-master and slave seem to be not in sync, but from time to time come together in perfect sync.

You can also set whether only the newly created MIDI-clock and mmc commands (start, stop, continue) are sent or the, at the MIDI-in incoming data, will be mixed with that.

All settings will be saved and restored at startup.

Details can be found in the manual."
