New Jupiter-X vs. Vintage JX-8P Comparing Stock Patches: Analog or Digital?

Published on Feb 25, 2020 MR TUNA Music

"The new Roland Jupiter-X contains approximations of their famous vintage hardware synths including the JX-8P. Many of the JX-8P stock patches have been recreated on the JP-X, and I have had requests to compare them directly-- so let's do it! No doubt there's some big differences here, but in my opinion the Jupiter definitely manages to pull off that classic 8P vibe.

There are no added effects or processing to either the JX or the JP, although the 'Juno Chorus' in the master effects section of the X remains on throughout the comparison."

The SOLINA String Machine module is based on Jan Ostman's DSP code and adapted for the AE Modular synthesizer format. Create a variety of chords easily, sequence them and then shape the string sound to you liking with oscillator spread, a filter, vibrato and a phaser. The module also plays incredibly well with other effects from the AE Modular synth module lineup."

"Oberheim OB-8 synthesizer in near-mint condition. I am the original owner. Purchase date was November 9, 1983. This unit has not been on the road at all. It has been in my home the entire time.

This unit has the Page 2 functions but does not have MIDI.

There are NO scratches or dings on this instrument. It has been well cared-for its entire life. As far as I know, the instrument works perfectly.

Included are the original owners manual, the original patch cassette, and the "Patch Hunt" cassette which is the result of OB-8 owners submitting their own patch ideas to Oberheim. I also have an ATM road case for the instrument. The internal foam rotted a long time ago, so it would have to be re-foamed.

This instrument belongs in your home or studio. It sounds fantastic and is one of the all-time classic synthesizers."

"The Cyclodon is a 16-step analog sequencer. The way it works is it basically runs in a loop. There is a Tempo adjust knob, but no visual indication of what the actual BPM is. There are another 16 knobs, each of which represent a 16th-note in the 1-bar loop. Adjusting each knob determines what pitches will be played at that step, but you can not program rests. This information is transmitted out via CV/Gate, an old analog (pre-MIDI) format for controlling other CV/Gate compatible vintage synths. The Cyclodon may also receive clock/sync via Roland style DIN-Sync input. It's analog, simple and affordable - it's perfect for anyone with analog synths who want to use vintage analog-style pattern sequencers. It also works great directly with the Technosaurus ! And it's tiny too - about the size of a VHS tape."

ASM Hydrasynth: self-playing patch

Published on Feb 25, 2020 Brittle stR music

Update: tutorial video for the above posted here.

"This patch is a serious edit of the 'first patch' in my previous video. I used all 5 LFOs on this one! Plus ENV5 is cycling to modulate the depth of ENV1 filter 1 cutoff. Another LFO slowly crossfades OSC1 and OSC2, each wavescanning modulated by its own LFO at two different rates. Then the arp is ratcheting at 44% Chance, giving extra unpredictability. There's a sine wave in the wave sequence for each OSC: this gives a bass timbre to mix in with the brighter waveforms.

The Hydrasynth gives more complex results than any other hardware synth I've ever used. This is just one chord arpeggiating, but it never seems to repeat, what with all the timbral modulations and ratcheting! It keeps spitting out irresistible little phrases that I might never have invented by playing manually.

All FX are onboard the synth."

Xonik Devices Midi to Roland PG-200 Protocol Converter Kit

You might recall the MIDI to JX-3P Protocol Converter from Xonik Devices posted back in 2015 here. Xonik Devices wrote in to let us know they have a new converter kit. Details follow.

"Hi everybody! Five years ago I made a small device that translates midi CC messages into the proprietary format that the Roland PG-200 uses to control the JX-3P, MKS-30 and GR-700, making it possible to tweak parameters on these synths without the rather expensive PG-200.

Quite a few people have asked if they could buy one, so I've decided to sell the device as a solder-yourself kit. Prices start at EUR 50 + postage without
an enclosure. I've got enough parts for 40 kits at the moment, sold on a first come first served basis. If demand is high I will probably order more parts, but there is a bit of a lead time.

If you want to order one, have any questions or just want to contact me, go to:

https://www.xonik.no/mpg200

PS: I do this on a hobby basis so it may take me a few days to get back to you!

About the MPG-200:

The MPG-200 is an affordable replacement for the PG-200 synthesizer programmer. It is a protocol translator for vintage Roland synths that use the PG-200 - JX-3P, MKS-30 and GR-700. It translates standard midi CC-messages into the proprietary PG-200 format necessary to control the synths, making it possible to use a DAW, hardware midi controller or other synth in place of the expensive PG-200.

No internal modification of your synth is necessary, as the MPG-200 does a direct translation into the PG-200 data format.

The MPG-200 comes with Midi thru, so you don't have to use a splitter if you want to control both playing and parameter noodling of your MKS-30 from the same midi source.

The MPG-200 is configurable and upgradable through Midi.

The Synth Sounds of Parliament-Funkadelic's Bernie Worrell | Reverb

video upload by Reverb

Published on Feb 25, 2020

"Bernie Worrell is most known as the man behind some of the funkiest keyboard lines ever recorded. A musical prodigy from an early age, he went on to become the keyboardist for Parliament-Funkadelic, a collaborator with musicians like Fred Schneider of the B-52s and groups like the Talking Heads, and even had a prolific solo career. In the video above, we're digging into some of Worrell's famous keyboard and synth sounds and how he put them together.

Worrell was a musical prodigy from an early age. He was born with perfect pitch and was a quick study of classical music, even composing and performing a concerto by age eight. He continued on to Juilliard and then to the New England Conservatory of Music before meeting George Clinton. After joining The Parliaments, as they were then known, he'd forever change the future of funk as a player, composer, and sonic voyager.

Here, we look at some of his famous keyboard and synth sounds and how he put them together. Worrell played vintage Moog MiniMoogs, a Hohner D6 Clavinet, an ARP Solina string synth, and a Sequential Circuits Prophet-5, among other instruments. In our video above, we're using a Moog Model D Reissue, a Nord Piano 3's Hohner D6 Clavinet patch, the Arturia V Collection's Solina V soft-synth, and a Prophet-6."

"The D-50 is a very interesting digital synth that combines PCM samples with Roland's linear arithmatic synthesis method, a style of digital subtractive synthesis. The PCM samples are providing the attack sound and the LAS section will ring out or sustain. In practice some very lovely and complex sounds are easy to achieve with the D-50.

This synth is in great shape and works perfectly with just some minor cosmetic wear from its age."

"Time to let go of my Two-Voice which I've had since 1997 when I got it from a tech in Atlanta.

The tolex was a bit rough when I got it but the inside is impeccable, and it works like a charm.

I have had it in for repairs 3 times during the 23 years that I have owned it so far.

Once around 2005 at Two Lines Music on Broadway, then at EARS Music Repairs in the Music District of NY in 2010 and a few weeks ago the sound OUT mixer module needed repair and I took it to AUDIOTRONIC in Bordeaux.

This beautiful beast is too large to occupy the space it deserves in our small home here in France so she has to go to someone who can provide her the space she needs to be played more frequently than with me when al I can do is take her out on occasion and run the sequemcer for samples.

I uploaded a few videos to show her in action for the purpose of this sale. The audio is far from sample quality but then, this was destined for Youtube to show the basic functioning of this machine.

There is one small niggle with this synth. The uppermost F# key sometimes gets stuck and has to be gently pulled back. Not a big deal for me, but needs to be mentioned. I mostly play the sequencer and oh, it also works with a TB-303 or an ARP Sequencer providing gate and CV."
