Manual Wave-Sequencing on the KORG EX-8000

video upload by CGMAGIK

"Discovered some new sound making possibilities with my old Korg EX-8000. it would have been so great if Korg had made this possible by adding the waveform selection as a modulation destination! I'm guessing I might be able to automate this in real-time with MIDI sysex messages likely. I'm going to look into that!"

Always wanted the same for the Roland JD-800.

SuonoBuono - Lazer

video upload by NOISEBUG

With and Analogue Systems modular.

LAZER is a unique laser-based music controller.

Thanks to its rich set of outputs, it can control external MIDI instruments and effects, analog synthesizers and virtual instruments in a DAW such as Ableton Live, Cubase or Logic. It also has an on-board lo-fi oscillator that can drive headphones (for live tracking) or be used as an audio source.

LAZER is completely standalone and does not require a computer. It is ideal for live jams!

The sensor measures the distance from the hand and transforms it into MIDI, analog and audio signals, according to user settings. Its 1mm (circa) resolution and the configurable range up to 50cm allow for precise control of sensitive parameters such as pitch and filter frequency.

LAZER does not require wearing any wearables and can be used in most light conditions with bare hands. It should however be avoided to point strong light sources directly to the sensor. Multiple LAZERs can be used simultaneously without interfering with each other.

1982 Sequential Circuits Prophet 5 Rev 3.3 w/ Factory MIDI SN 5852

via this auction

"Up for grabs is a beautiful Prophet 5 Rev 3.3 with factory MIDI from the inventor himself!

We acquired this amazing Prophet by chance while working out of a studio in Southern California right before the pandemic. It was a backup unit to their Rev 2 that had seen more action moving/Tetris/inventory than time in use. In order to get it home we purchase a brand new top of the line encore ATA flight case with wheels ($700+ road case) which is included in the sale as well. The case has flown a total of 3 times: once home, then back and forth to a remote session as it was a ‘must have’ per the clients request. It is in excellent condition. The case is currently in climate controlled storage warehouse, pictures will be up soon.

The synth’s cabinet shows typical wear for a Prophet 5 but is structurally sound. The wood cabinet gets a linseed oil treatment every 3 months as part of our routine studio upkeep. If you have wood cabinet equipment I highly recommend linseed oil if you want to preserve the quality of wood.

Routine maintenance for upkeep as follows:
-Power supply electrolytic caps updated.
-Keybed serviced with new bushings and J wire assembly cleaned and fine tuned.
-Battery replacement to ensure longevity.

We are listing this in Very Good condition because of the minor cosmetic imperfections. Otherwise this Prophet is in Mint condition."

"Absolutely brand new synthesizer! Flawless operation of all elements. Since the date of purchase turned on 2 times, all factory seals are in place, not disassembled, complete set. You can install a midi-mod (which will be included in the price) but considering the condition I think this is illegal :) For true connoisseurs."

Roland SH-1000 Analog Synthesizer - Vintage

"The first commercially-available synthesizer marketed by Roland. Works great, sounds great! There's a touch of key bounce detectable when "staccato" is selected, but I'm not sure that's abnormal. All modules, sliders, switches, and presets are functional, and it's relatively quiet for its age. The right wooden side-panel has come off, but it’s present and repairable. It's 48 years old, so the keyboard needs a good cleanup and calibration, but the keys, switches, dividers, and presets are all functioning properly, which I found amazing. There was some tuner crackling ans static when I obtained it; the only servicing I've done was cycling the tuners until the crackling and static went away. Everything is working smoothly, but with enough resistance to suggest that either lubricant-type solvent cleaner was used, none was used or that lubricant was replaced if solvent was used. It came with a home-made hinged wooden case that was NOT form fit, and that case will be included with the sale."

Univox Korg Mini-Korg 2 (700, K2) 1974 SN 1376

via this auction

"A rare and unusual vintage mono synth from 1974. The Univox/Korg Mini-Korg 2/K-2. Kind of in the same vein as the Roland SH-1000/2000 but it's really in a league of its own. Groovy design with the sliders predominantly on the front of the instrument, below the keyboard. Makes putting this on the top tier of your rack a no brainer!

Considering its age, this synthesizer is in excellent shape. Everything functions as it should. The sliders are a little stiff (some more than others) and could use a good cleaning I'm sure. One of the original switches (Travel Vibrato) was swapped out for a button, which is interesting and perhaps even a slight improvement from a functional viewpoint). The switches are in great shape and I love the funky design). There are a few dings and scratches here and there, which I've tried to document in the photos."

Freak adds some ethereal string sounds, mangled through my mxr stereo chorus and the GFI specular tempus. Bit of compression added in post. Footage layered in shotcut (freeware) editor."

Synthesizer Jam: Scent of Spring - Operator Burstup (TR-808, MiniBrute 2S, TD-3, Model:Cycles)

video upload by Operator Burstup

"This live jam was inspired by a gorgeous morning outside. Blue sky, pink blossoms on the trees in front of the house, nice temperature... spring is awesome. I felt relaxed and was in the mood for another #DubTechno tune, but didn't want to work in the DAW. So once again I played with some of my synths and drum machines.
In this video I'm using my Roland TR-808 (I have it since the 1990s), an Arturia MiniBrute 2S (semi-modular and with an amazing sequencer), an Elektron Model:Cycles (the most fun FM synth I own), a Behringer TD-3 (very good clone of the TB-303) and the Space Echo RE-20. I hope you will enjoy this tune.😸

Two DB-01s as a matched stereo pair: noodlings

video upload by Richard DeHove

"While thinking how nice it would be to have a modulatable stereo filter it (belatedly) came to me that my two DB-01s could pretty easily simulate a single synth with a stereo filter. The DB-01s have just the right degree of simplicity to allow for easily matched parameters, and the LFO is ideal for in-sync stereo modulation. I kept the pattern absolutely basic just to concentrate on the stereo effect.

One interesting thing I did notice was how sensitive I suddenly became to tuning differences once I tried to match the two units. It took a good half hour for the units to warm up and be in tune. Until then one was about 4 cents out, the other about 1 cent. Insteda of being a trvial difference or even a nice "thickener" it just sounded off to me. Curiously one unit was also quieter than the other so to match them up one is on volume 60, the other on 83. Once warmed up though they were absolutely stable and what you see in the video is the units after being on for about three days :D

So with a little help from the Zen Delay (and some Omnisphere at the end) here's the result.

0:00 Setup
0:23 Filter noodle
1:09 LFO phase
3:48 LFO phase v2

Both are routed through the Drolo Stretch Weaver.
The Stretch Weaver has different effects that will enable the two input sources to interact with each other. In the examples used here, the guitar signal triggers an effect to applied to the tracker.

Elektor Labs J2B 9bit synthesizer midi / Soulsby Atmegatron clone

video upload by Elektor TV

Elektor J2B Synthesizer First Demo of Prototype from 2014.

"This video shows Elektor's J2B Synthesizer prototype running a soft synthesizer engine ported from the ATmegatron by Soulsby. Listen carefully to the sounds produced by this beast and admire the way you can control it. LPC1347 rulez the waves :-)"

via this auction

"This is a port of the Soulsby Atmegatron 8-bit monophonic synthesizer to the Elektor J2B LPC1343 ARM Cortex-M3 board. The original Atmegatron is based on an 8-bit, 32 KB flash memory ATmega328 and the firmware is available as an open source Arduino sketch. The J2B board has a 32-bit LPC1343 ARM Cortex-M3 processor with 32 KB flash memory.

The Atmegatron has two rotary encoders, eight potentiometers and a pushbutton. Two potentiometers are for volume and bass boost, the others control the synthesizer itself. The J2B board can have up to nine rotary encoders, or eight plus a pushbutton.

The Atmegatron uses a bunch of bi-color LEDs to interface with the user. The J2B can have an LCD.

The Atmegatron uses PWM to produce its sound, the J2B has excellent PWM capabilities.

Based on the previous observations, porting the Atmegatron to the J2B should not be a huge task, which is why I started doing it. The most daunting task was to replace the analog potentiometers by rotary encoders while keeping the same feel.
Two rotary encoders replicate the Atmegatron encoders, six others simulate the potentiometers. The bi-color LEDs are replaced by a 2x16 LCD, but I added two bi-color LEDs to indicate the red/green modes of the synthesizer.

A cool thing of the J2B is its built-in USB capabilities making it possible to update the firmware from any Windows PC simply by copying a file to the board which is seen as an external drive. No programmer needed at all.

PWM capabilities of the LPC1343 are a bit better than those of the ATmega328, which allowed me to increase the sample frequency and gain a bit, making it a 9-bit synthesizer. So, in theory, the sound quality of the J2B synth should be a little better than the Atmegatron."
