Roland SH3 vs SH3A: Direct Filter & Oscillator Comparison

video upload by Vintage Synthesizer Solutions

"This was filmed on very short notice, so apologies for the video quality. We had these 2 in the shop together and were exploring their significant sonic differences. We decided it deserved to be filmed and shared for others to reference.

@2:31 I accidentally leave the 3a on the sawtooth oscillator setting for a few seconds while playing the 3's (on top) square wave. I quickly realize this and adjust accoridingly shortly after." -- Tuning and parametersettings between the two seem off at times. Note the difference between :50 and :52 followed by later settings along with the differences mentioned above after 2:31. Still interesting from the perspective of hearing their raw sound / what they sound like.

Mass Harmonic Excitement & Tonal Sculpting // Future Sound Systems FIL4 Timbral Sculptor

video upload by DivKidVideo

"Here we have the new Timbral Sculptor Eurorack module from Future Sound Systems. It’s a harmonic power house with both filtering (with multiple unique twists) and wave folding in one module. It features clever routing and an additional VCA to patch in extra voltage control or add further dynamics to your patch. There’s also an in built Audio FM which comes from Future Sound Systems deep diving into some quirks (faults?) in some of the early Korg filter designs and then exploiting them for additional musical processing. There’s both rectifying and folding (a second wave folder!) in the resonance path of the filter which really pushes the wave shaping potential of this into some unique wave shapes that would otherwise be hard to synthesise. Clever stuff!"

"The Timbral Sculptor from Future Sound Systems together several synthesis elements designed for altering the harmonic content of audio signals at its input. The module is comprised of a multi-mode filter, VCAs, a deadband wavefolder, and a rectifier and Lockhart wavefolder in the resonance path of the filter. The Timbral Sculptor therefore can be coupled with one or several oscillators, as well as modulation sources, for a full synthesizer voice. The Filter component of the Timbral Sculptor has been designed to range from clean, low-distortion filtering to chaotic noise generation, particularly through the use of non-linear elements in its resonance path.

The Timbral Sculptor’s multi-mode filter is a -18dB/octave three-pole design based around the SSI2164 IC. When used without the rectifier or wavefolder in the resonance path, the filter behaves “cleanly” with low distortion. The filter will self-oscillate at maximum Resonance, and also has slightly accentuated Resonance at higher Cut-Off Frequency, imitating filters such as that found in the Roland TB-303. 1V/Oct control over the Cut-Off Frequency is available at the Frequency CV1 input, and the Resonance can also be voltage controlled via an attenuverter. Additional features to this filter include the Audio FM attenuverter and, in the resonance path of the filter, a rectifier network and Lockhart wavefolder. These can be employed to drastically change the behaviour of the filter. Each individual state output from the filter is fed through a VCA, courtesy of another SSI2164, and akin to the Cyclical Engine VCO module. The mixed output of this is then passed on to the next component in the Chain, whether that be the Chain Output or the deadband wavefolder named 'Timbre'.

The 'Timbre' section is named after a well-regarded deadband wavefolder design, prominent in “West-Coast” designs both new and old. Whilst the Filter section of the Timbral Sculptor belongs to classic subtractive synthesis, the Timbre section can be seen as relating to additive synthesis, as the harder the Timbre section is driven, the greater the number of harmonics that are added to the input. The Timbre section can be manipulated using the Drive control (when in Pre configuration) or from the VCAs at the filter’s outputs (when in Post configuration).

The Timbral Sculptor also features an exponential-law VCA, which can be used completely independently from the other elements of the module if desired. Otherwise, the VCA can be placed at the beginning or end of the signal chain. Note that this VCA can be employed when the Timbre section is in the Pre configuration to give voltage control over the Drive."

ALAN R. PEARLMAN FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES NEW NOVEMBER 5, 2022 DATE FOR FALL ‘SYNTHPOSIUM’

KINGSTON, NY, July 27, 2022– Save the DATE! The Alan R. Pearlman Foundation has announced that a change of date has been made for their fall Synthposium: '2022: A 50 Year ARP Odyssey'. The virtual event and fundraiser will now be held on November 5, 2022.

All proceeds will benefit the Alan R. Pearlman Foundation and the “ARPs For All” project.

Ticketing and information will be available late September on their website: alanrpearlmanfoundation.org. Much like the previous 2600 event in 2021, the Synthposium will focus on one iconic synth—the Odyssey—and will feature panel discussions, technical forums and information, musical performances, and interviews with artists, former ARP employees, engineers of both hardware and software versions of the famed Odyssey and more. Participants will be able to interact live with panelists via chat.

The Foundation continues its work with contributors, collaborators, vendors, manufacturers, venues, and owners of rare original ARP synthesizers. Among their goals is the creation of installations where students can utilize ARP synthesizers as part of their music curriculum, and to explore the endless possibilities of electronic music. Modular Monthly - Manis Iteritas Magnus

video upload by Ultra-Vox Studios

"Welcome to the first Modular Monthly! This will be a monthly video series showcasing my favorite modules, explaining there functionality, patching strategies and of course the sounds they create.

It was an easy choice to pick which module I wanted to show first. The @noiseeng Manis Iteritas Magnus is a staple in my sound design. In this video I thought what better way to show its sound and flexibility by just hooking it up and start turning knobs! The first half of the video is different kick/percussion possibilities and the second half I open it up to show the brutal and gritty chaos it can produce.

Based on the architecture of Basimilus Iteritas line, but designed to be more gritty and aggressive. It accomplishes this by producing only sawtooth waves that are manipulated, modulated, and distorted through a rethought interface. It has the ability to make anything from drums, bass, leads or detuned madness or just pure mayhem!

Univox Korg MiniKORG 700S K-2

"Korg's early synthesizer design from the early 70s - this is branded under the Univox name for the North American market. This is the 700s or K-2 version which adds more modulation options and a second oscillator over the 700 or K-1 version. This also has the fine tune slider for the second oscillator, which some 700s/K-2 models don't have. It makes tuning much easier and makes this the best iteration of the Minikorg (in my opinion)!

Very unique sound with the low and hi pass filters in tandem. Controls are easy to use so you can focus on playing. Overall very good cosmetic condition for its age and all the controls work. Missing Univox badge on the back and the previous owner sanded the tabs off the traveler caps so they don't lock together which is a common mod. Tuning is good and stable for a vintage VCO. All keys work. The "effect" on/off toggle make a little noise while flipping it but i bet a little contact cleaner will fix it. Comes with a very beat up original univox case that doesn't look pretty but protects the synth."

"This is a very nice looking system-100 that has been recently serviced by Steiner-Connolly in Utah. Everything works great on this unit and its ready to head off to a new home.

The system-100 is a one oscillator mono-synth, but don't let that fool you. This thing packs a punch with bass, and the filter is known to be similar or the exact same as the famous TB-303. Here is an interesting and versatile way to access the acid sound!"

Abyss Devices - Tube distortions compared

video upload by John Schussler

"Abyss Devices makes a couple different tube-based distortions. The Saevitum is bigger, with a resonant LP/HP filter attached, and Saevicus is smaller with no (resonant) filter. Both use 12AX7 tubes and similar amp circuitry, so I was interested to see where their sounds differed or were the same.

Since the Saevicus doesn't have a resonant filter (it has as filter, but it serves mostly as a simple tone control), I focused on the distortion sounds from each module, with my main question being whether the smaller Saevicus was missing anything in that department, or whether it was just as growly as its big brother.

Input audio was a basic saw wave from a Doepfer A-111. Sequenced by Stochastic IG. Envelope by Zadar.
