Liminal Patch 010 : Dark Ambient Modular Exploration : 10 Minutes of Threshold Invocation

video upload by Botched Creative

"AETHERIS NEXUSis a 10-minute descent into modular tension, where structured performance collides with controlled unpredictability. A convergence of control and surrender. Droning analog oscillators stretch across a dark horizon. Sculpted noise writhes in the aether—each exhale a ghost of resonance. Randomized ostinatos emerge like faulty memories. Pulsing bass figures carve a path agnostic to meter—structured, but answerable only to their own internal logic.

Recorded live to multitrack, each voice was captured in real time—a fleeting convergence of structure and volatility. What emerged was part performance, part algorithmic drift: a mesh of voltages and reactive systems colliding in ways that can’t be precisely reentered.
An improvisation encoded in circuitry and instinct. Once aligned—now gone.

Liminal Patch 010 marks the end of Series One. Liminal Patches Series Two will return after a brief hiatus.

New KOMA Sensei, Kassiopeia & More Superbooth!

Via KOMA

"Dear synthusiasts,

long time no hear!

First of all, big THANKS to everyone who made it to our KOMAPARTY 2.0 some weeks ago! We had great fun and were happy to hang out with friends and our community <3

Big ups Bertolt Meyer, Teslator, Cate Hops with FridaY and Echosisters!

Here's a few snaps for the vibes:

KOMA BOOTH AT SUPERBOOTH

What's all this??? We're excited to share what we've been working on during the Superbooth preparations, including a few mysterious surprises! You will find us at Booth O400 - same as last year. Just walk up the main big stairs and turn left until you see a bunch of nerds in black dungarees playing weird looking instruments… Probably our best SB drip yet!

This year, we will showcase a handful of brand new designs of upcoming modules to be released later this year including Monoplex - a smaller version of the Komplex sequencer, Bürste - a noise burst generator, a Wavefolder, a Dual Envelope and a KOMA VCO!
Sensei and Kassiopeia, which are both available for pre-order, will also have their space in special installations we’ve prepared especially for this year.

One of them is using your movements or even your heartbeat to generate cool shapes with our new VCO and Sensei sensor modules. You'll be
able to print out the results as a sticker!

New Eurorack Modules Coming From Doepfer

Doepfer will be showcasing the above new modules at SUPERBOOTH25. Details on each follow.
Check with dealers on the right for upcoming availability.

Module A-119-2 is kind of a dual version of module A-119 without envelope follower. Instead two amplifiers are available and the module width is 4 HP only.

The module contains two amplifiers with separately adjustable amplification levels. Each channel is equipped with an overload display. The module can be used also for stereo signals, e.g. the stereo output of a smartphone.

Controls and displays:

Level 1/2: manual control of the amplification in the range 0 - about 45.

Overload 1/2: overload LED, begins to light up for output levels beyond about 10Vpp (+/-5V)

In 1: audio input 1 (monophonic or stereophonic, see technical details)

In 2: audio input 2 (monophonic)

Out 1/2: audio output (monophonic)

Technical details:

for higher amplifications the two amplifiers can be daisy-chained

normalling options: the signal applied to socket In 1 can be normalled to socket In 2 in different ways by means of a jumper on the pc board:

socket In 1 is connected via a mono patch cable (standard patch cable) to a monophonic signal and this signal is normalled to socket In 2 (i.e. the same input signal for both sub-units): jumper on pin header JP2 in upper position

socket In 1 is connected via a 3.5 mm stereo TRS cable to a stereophonic signal and the second channel of the stereo signal is normalled to socket In 2: jumper on pin header JP2 in lower position

no normalling: jumper is removed from pin header JP2

all inputs and outputs are DC coupled. Thus the module can be used also for the amplifications of control voltages.

Creating sounds on the Modor DR-2: A detailed expedition

video upload by Richard DeHove

"In the latest instalment of my "If You Want A Short, Splashy, Gotcha Video This Isn't For You" series I noodle about in lengthy detail with sounds on the Modor DR-2. The idea here isn't a quick showcase of wondrous sounds, it's to give you a genuine feel for what it's like to use the DR-2. That means transiting through hundreds of gradations and flavors of a sound. No doubt sometimes you'll hear your preferred sound pass by as I adjust a parameter too far or wind back something too hard. Watching this back I can see points at which I should have stopped but instead kept tweaking. The filtered clap for example sounded pretty good after about 10 seconds but I kept flogging it death :D But that's the essence of this video - as the old saying goes it's the journey not the destination.

A quick note on the audio track: The Modor's buttons are very loud and clicky. It gives them a satisfying sureness in the studio but means they're quite intrusive on video. I did my best to EQ them out, gate them out, and manually mute them when possible. The result in headphones may sound slightly choppy (and somewhat mangled my voice) but I wanted to make sure you could hear the Modor's sounds properly rather than being mixed with room noise and button clicks.

I hope here I've got across the fact that the DR-2 is beautifully crafted to deliver a massive range of customizable sound. It's easy to dial in the basics of an excellent sound, and then have the controls you need to zoom in on what you want. The main problem is when to stop noodling.

Despite the length of this video I only touched on a tiny fraction of the Modor's sounds. If you're interested in hearing more, or any particular types of sound, please let me know.

Finally, Mr Modor if you're reading this: Please make an all-black version with second-layer subtext on the knobs.

Details via NRSynth (Google translated)

Oberheim Legacy: In 1974, Tom Oberheim imagined a small synth as an accessory to his DS-2A digital sequencer. But it was Dennis P Collins, a gifted ARP engineer, who designed the multimode filter of the Synth Expander Module (SEM). This unique filter is a 12 db filter that cannot deny its lineage with the ARP 1047 (ARP 2500) and ARP 2023 (white Odyssey MK1) filters, 12 db filters also designed by Dennis P Collins. With two very fat VCOs and a devastating sync (also close to the Odyssey VCOs), the small SEM offers a powerful sound, very present in the mix and very different from Moog and other synths with 24 db filters. So despite its simplicity and a filter that does not enter self-oscillation, we can get a lot of sounds out of it. Accessible and easy to use, the SEM is a success. In 1975, Tom paired first two, then four, into a huge keyboard case, creating the first "true" polyphonic instrument in history, the "Four Voices." In 1976, the SEM was even expanded to eight. Nicknamed the "White Elephant," its sound was as enormous as the instrument itself! But in 1978, the brilliant Prophet-5 made it obsolete, and Tom designed the OB-X, whose channel cards were also clones of the SEM. Subsequently, the OB-XA and OB-8 used Curtis chipsets and no longer had quite the same sound. In 2010, Oberheim reissued the SEM identically, but with all surface-mount components. In 2011, the SEM PRO added just a MIDI interface.

NRsynth "Solo": This is an "extended" version of the SEM, handcrafted with traditional through-hole components. Only the envelopes have been modified for a punchier result; the rest is identical to the original synth. Additionally, the Solo features a sub-oscillator, a glide, white noise, and many more modulation options than the SEM. MIDI velocity is also supported. Finally, the white metal case gives way to a luxurious, classically crafted cabinet with waxed oak sides and black tolex, similar to a Marshall amp.

A patchbook of all Séraphin Palmeri's sounds is included with the device.

Specifications:

VCO: Two discrete VCOs with hard sync, saw, pulse + PW (same as SEM)
Sub-oscillator: Pulse wave – 1 octave below VCO1.
Noise: 100% analog white noise
Multimode 12 dB filter: Same as SEM with LPF, HPF, notch, and bandpass mode. VCA: Analog (same as SEM)

Sons of the Arpy: Roland SH-2, System-500, Deckard's Voice, FX Aid Pro, Mimeophon, G-Storm Electro

video upload by thesrabbit

"The SH-2 has some kind of power over me. I can't get away from it. Not that I want to!

This is the first time I've tried adding a 3rd oscillator to the SH-2 by running a single Roland System-500 512 square with PWM into the external audio input. I thought this would naturally lead to making a massive 3 detuned osc + sub monosynth sound, but instead I gravitated to something much more melodic, by setting up each oscillator at a different pitch, making chords with nice intervals. With the ability to set the bender to VCO 2 only, I can change the interval of one of the notes easily, either up or down, without disrupting the vibe at all. The T-Rex Replicator tape delay adds some echo and gritty texture, and then the Make Noise Mimeophon delay fans it out into the stereo field. The sequence of notes is a simple 4 note arp that I transpose with the NiftyKeyz. The mod wheel is assigned to tape delay time, and the arp clock output is fed into a 2HP clock divider, which drives the kick, though half a beat behind because that's how clock dividers work I guess. The kick is a simple decay envelope routed to the G-Storm Electro SH-2 VCF with a moderate amount of resonance and saturation. There's an additional percussive element with some noise going to the G-Storm SH-5 VCF, through the LP first and then the dedicated bandpass which is being swept by an LFO.

The Blade Runner-ish lead sound is of course the Black Corporation Deckard's Voice, paired with the Rachael ring modulator, though it's not being used as a ring-mod, but rather a second sawtooth oscillator. 2 saws are essential to the BR sound, and therefore the Rachael is a required addition to Deckard's Voice. The output runs into the Happy Nerding FX Aid Pro set to the Black Cloud reverb algorithm, which completes the sound.

There's just a tiny dash of master reverb in post that serves as the final glue to hold it all together."

DIY Eurorack SH-2 vs Actual Roland SH-2: comparison and patch explorations (no talking)

'By the time I was done with it, I was so involved, I didn't know what to think.'

This long video of explorations feels like a non-verbal documentary that concludes the journey, and is the culmination of my SH-2 Eurorack quest. If you've been following along, you already know that I caved in and bought the real deal. As far as Eurorack goes, my overall impression is that it's pretty doable given what I have, but if you want authenticity, then a more accurate filter clone is needed. Mind you, the G-Storm SH-2 VCF doesn't claim to be a clone, but rather an adaptation. However, since it's missing 25% of the top end, I can't really get close at all on some of these patch explorations. If you want aggressive basses that can be pushed into saturation with more grit than the original, then the G-Storm filter will do that for you without hesitation. The Erica Synths Black VCO2 does a great job of covering the SH-2's VCO1 duties, and the System-500's 540 envelopes can get pretty close, though they can be a bit fiddly and require toggling between the slow and fast modes.

To summarize: This SH-2 will be going with me to my grave. I already know it's THAT good. The only "monosynth" that could ever top it for me is the System-700, which is simply not obtainable, unless there's a raffle, and I win said raffle, which never happens."

Fala Versio | Versio Platform | Episode 13

video upload by Cinematic Laboratory

"Noise Engineering has just released three new firmwares for the Versio, Legio and Alia platforms. As always, they're amazing and they're free downloads for any of those platforms. Fala Versio is a formant filter that's super easy to use. It will add a lot of vocal expression to your patch. On mild settings you can create choir-like sounds, on more extreme settings it will talk. In short, it's just amazing.

This is a simple video, which was a warm bath after my last Leibniz video. I'll be using MakeNoise Strega, Bruxa, Serge Medusa and the Broken Loquelic as my sound sources which create an excellent mood for the time between XMAS and the happy new year. I did not make any 'best wishes' or 'best of 2024' video this year because I couldn't finish it in time. I also realized that my 'best of 2024' are never going to be my all time favorites (except the new Serge Medusa and Instruo Dail).

Obviously I wish you all the best and I am hoping you'll have a great time patching the modular during the holiday season - and beyond. I'll probably post something before the end of the year.

Serge has been a personal discovery in 2024, so instead of getting the latest modules, I went back to 70's tech and it's a dream come true. I also love Bruxa a lot. Objectively the Joranalogue x Hainbach Collide 4 is a major achievement in eurorack, and it's impossible to ignore DivKid's colllab-contributions to the eurorack landscape, including the Droid patch.

I still need to figure out my DivSkip. XAOC Berlin is a must-have in the Leibniz niche, but on it's own it's just a very basic VCO. Another favorite is Oneiroi and it's cool to see that Black Maths is on the bestseller list, proving the old stuff doesn't get old. The new Buchla/TTA modules are also dreams that came true and it's great to finally have an orginal 259 . I didn't have time to dive into the new Qu-Bit StarDust looper, but I bet it will be worth checking out if you want to escape monophony."

video upload by Anton Anru

"Xfer Serum - Technolize is a preset pack designed for atmospheric industrial, industrial techno, and noise genres. It draws inspiration from artists like Gesaffelstein, Mr. Oizo, Crystal Castles, Scorn, and Coil, who may not strictly represent the genre but contribute to a unique sound.
🌌 The result features rich and deep basses, immersive atmospheric pads, and metallic noisy leads, creating an interesting auditory experience. Many sounds are saturated with distortion, which is great for both aggressive sounds and noisy lo-fi.

📦 Get these presets: https://antonanru.sellfy.store/p/seru...

The bank includes 51 Presets: 17 Basses, 2 Drones, 7 Leads, 9 Pads, 11 Plucks, 3 Percs, 2 Synths.

👤 The author of the soundset is skendi (Arseniy Pushkov).

Whether you're producing techno, ambient, IDM, industrial, drum and bass, or any genre that demands a dark, moody aesthetic, these sounds will add depth and character to your music.

🎛 Macros can change tone, stereo width, modulation depth and rate, noise level, distortion, detuning, space/echo/reverb, effects mix, envelope parameters, and others.
You may control them via MIDI controller, use them for automation, or map the macros to your DAW modulators like LFO, Shaper, and others.
ModWheel adds expressiveness to the timbre.

💡 Ensure that you are using the latest plugin version. Version 1.368 or higher is required.
Installation: Open the Serum menu and click 'Show Serum Presets Folder.' You will see folders containing different Serum content. Open the 'Presets' folder and place the new bank of presets there.
