I See Monkeys - 1984

YouTube via frankothemountain. via wire to the ear where you can find some more info on this one.
"One of my first 4 track songs from 1984 using the Moog 12 modular synth.

I see monkeys on the train
they're goin' to work
they're so well trained
I see monkeys inventing cars
but they're stuck in traffic
I see them crash their cars

I see monkeys
I see monkeys
I see monkeys
we're all monkeys

and I see monkeys standing on line
waiting for things
and wasting time
then I see a mirror in my room
I go to look, and I'm a monkey too

I saw a monkey
they're all monkeys
I see monkeys
we're all monkeys"

Making of a drum synth: Tom Module Concept

"The sound source is a 'true' sine wave oscillator. This means that the sinewave is generates using a 18dB/oct filter made to resonate permanently. On other synth vco's sine wave are sometimes generated by 'bending' a triangle-wave into a sine wave. The difference between a true sinewave oscillator and a 'bent' sine-oscillator is only noticeable in fast frequency modulation. Due to it's nature the sinewave gets asymmetric generating overtones."

The Octopus Experience

via BERND KISTENMACHER

"As I promised some month ago, I offer you now the translation of my report about the Octopus sequencer from German company “GenoQs”. The article will be published in issue no.11 of the “Synthesizer-Magazin”. As you maybe know, I write some little articles or reviews for this magazine from time to time. Writing about my first experiences with this fantastic sequencer was an “affair of the heart”. So I hope you will enjoy the following article and you are not too angry about my terrible English…"

BBC RADIOPHONIC WORKSHOP - A Retrospective

"50TH ANNIVERSARY RELEASE

DOUBLE CD, RELEASE DATE: 3rd NOVEMBER 2008

Mute are proud to announce the release of a 50th Anniversary Retrospective double CD from the Radiophonic Workshop. This brand new compilation features classic, extremely rare and previously unavailable sounds and music by the legendary BBC organisation. Presented in chronological order, the CD includes works from stalwarts of the Radiophonic Workshop such as John Baker, Delia Derbyshire, Daphne Oram, Elizabeth Parker, Desmond Briscoe, Paddy Kingsland, Peter Howell and Malcolm Clarke amongst others.

This Retrospective features over 100 pieces of music and sound effects from various BBC TV and Radio shows from 1958 through to 1997. Including work from Quatermass and the Pit, The Goon Show, The Secret War, Blake’s Seven, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, Salem’s Lot, The Demon Headmaster, Michael Palin’s Full Circle as well as the original full length Dr Who Theme and the Tardis effects.

Using reel-to-reel tape machines, early heroines such as Daphne Oram and Delia Derbyshire recorded everyday or strange sounds and then manipulated these by speeding up, slowing down or cutting the tape with razor blades and piecing it back together.

The pioneering techniques were created for and used on a myriad of programmes, with Dr Who being their biggest client. The sound of the Tardis in Dr Who was a sound engineer's front door key scraped across the bass strings on a broken piano. Other impromptu props included a lampshade, champagne corks and assorted cutlery.

Ten years ago the workshop was disbanded due to costs but its reputation as a Heath Robinson-style, pioneering force in sound is as strong as ever, acknowledged as possibly the greatest influence on UK electronic music, influencing the likes of Jon Spencer, Aphex Twin, Daniel Miller, Add N to (x)…. The corporation initially only offered its founders a six-month contract, because it feared any longer in the throes of such creative and experimental exercises might make them ill.

Also released on the same day are the albums BBC Radiophonic Workshop and BBC Radiophonic Music, The BBC Radiophonic Music CD concentrates on the more musical output of the legendary organisation while BBC Radiophonic Workshop deals with the pioneering sound effects and methods used to achieve them.

These releases continue a series that began on The Grey Area of Mute with the release of Doctor Who at the BBC Radiophonic Workshop Volume 1: The Early Years 1963-1969 and Volume 2: New Beginnings 1970-1980."

Original ARP 4075 Analog Filter PCB

via this auction

Note the size compared to the nickle.

"ARP 4075 Resonant Analog Filter PCB assembly

Original ARP circuit board assembly pulled from a working OMNI many years ago. This is the same board which was featured in many ARP classic synthesizer designs, including the 2600, Odyssey, AXXE and others. With just a few additional components this could PCB could make an great addition to a DIY modular synthesizer, replacement for a bunk potted 2600 filter module, or even a standalone effect unit. The board requires the standard (bipolar) +/-15 Volt power supply and a few resistors, pots, and trimmers to be used as a standalone device. The board features several long pins which allow it to mate with another board (on which the pots, etc may be mounted), making it easy to work with."

Memory of a Free Festival on VCS3 - Bowie - Cover

"As Aston students, we could "sign out" the synth & recorder for free at the Centre for the Arts. Most students who had booked the VCS3 failed to get any sound out of it, but CDZ were determined to succeed and do some trax which we did. One afternoon when I should have been writing essays, I took the gear into a practice room with awful acoustics and covered this David Bowie song. Great fun. Beats the library, anyway."

flight of harmony mid-month newsletter October 2008

"There’s been so much going on that a mid-month letter sounded good:

We now have a forum! Graciously supplied by His Wiggliness, Muff Wiggler, scroll down to “Hosted Forums”. There are several discussions regarding the Plague Bearer, with users’ pictures and samples (much better than mine). You have to be registered to hear the samples, but it is worth it. There are also threads for suggestions of new modules and Barebones Packs, format discussions, and announcements of upcoming stuff.

The discounted first run of the PB-1E & PB-2E are almost gone, only a couple of each left.

There are a few hand-made Frac format PB modules left – single- and double-width. Make sure you check out the thread about them in the forum.

The Imp Eurorack module nears completion, comments are greatly appreciated (forum again).

A limited run of the Infernal Noise Machine is now for sale. Five units are available at $666.00 each. http://www.flightofharmony.com/INM.html and in the forum.

Guild Timbre Generator prototype #5 of 6 1972 Mutron

images via this auction
"This is a very rare prototype for a synthesizer system made for Guild by Mike Beigel and Izzy Strauss. Mike later went on to start Mutron and incorporated some of the circuitry in this unit into the Mutron III. This is #5 of 6 protypes made for Guild back in 1972. After Guild president Al Dronge was killed in a plane crash the company decided to drop the project. Mike still owns the other 5 units so this is the only one in the wild. This unit was actually thrown out at Guild a few years back after they were purchased by Fender." via Russ

un synthesizer. acoustic sitar keyboard keytar

via this auction

note the consistency of the keys

" From India. This very portable, lightweight, 3 feet long,10-string keyboard sitar (with built in case) has 24 keys ! Of the 10 strings two are allocated as drones sympathetic strings (like on a sitar) the other 8 assigned to the keyboard. They can be tuned differently. Keytar is self-contained in a multi-colored wood cabinet. Hard to tell from photo but this has individual keys (sharps & flats) for chromatic play on it. The keys by the way are physically larger on the left side and gradually get smaller as you approach the right side of the keyboard. Very strange indeed. TO PLAY _One hand strums with provided pick (or in my case a pen) while the other hand presses a key to select pitch. It is a really cool authentic street instrument from India. Totally acoustic. Completely outrageous. Great for recording, videos, live performance, music experimentation, ethnic stuff, or simply art.

No electricity. No MIDI. They are all painted a little different so color style may be different from photo. They work great with a pick-up for recording or gigs."

"This is me shooting a Linn Drum Machine with my S&W .500 Magnums. It was one of the first digital drum machines on the market." Not me, matrix, of course. I would never harm a synth, even a dead one. It's sacrilege in my book. So disturbing I almost didn't put this one up.
