"The Roland SVC-350 Vocoder is the first truly sophisticated vocoder to be priced within range of most musicians. The primary function of the Roland SVC-350 Vocoder is to analyze the spoken or sung human voice and use this information (or program) to trigger another musical signal (or carrier) giving the instrument the ability to 'speak' or 'sing'. This vocal synthesis is accomplished by processing the voice through a series of eleven 'Voice Character' analysis filters. All of the filters within the 'Voice Character Control' are active and control an envelope follower which reacts according to the volume of that individual frequency. This information is then used to shape those frequencies of the carrier (musical instrument) signal.
The Roland SVC-350 Vocoder uses ten filters for vowel sounds and there is also an extra filter with an extremely high slew rate allowing it to respond to the rapid transients of hard consonants, like the 'T' in the word 'today'. This consonant filter is a feature not found even on higher priced vocoders. The Roland SVC-350 Vocoder allows for both balanced and unbalanced program inputs and outputs and contains a special guitar input that permits attenuation of the guitar harmonics. Another remarkable feature of the Roland SVC-350 Vocoder is a special 'Hold' feature that locks onto the vowel sound quality so that one vowel sound does not have to be continually repeated while you play your instrument. With other features like the 'Ensemble' effect, head 'Phone' output, as well as guitar amp and line outputs...the Roland SVC-350 Vocoder is truly the next step in musical instrument effects.

"In the early eighties I saw a monosynth with an upright control panel like the MS-20 and I am 99% sure it was called METZ, because I even found it on the map (it is a town in France). I understand there is a company manufacturing electronic stuff with that name but I have not found anything, NOT A TRACE of that synth on the web. Have you heard about it?"

Metz combined parts and construction units from various companies and putted it all together in an wooden case.
For example he used the oscillator bank and mixer (as used in the minimoog). All the parts were modificated. So the oscillator banks had PWM and the possibility for seperate pitch modulation
Also he had several outputs for each waveform. For each oscillator in the oscillator bank (there are in total 3 banks) there is the possibility of coarse- an finetuning. The vca and vcf are built from parts of the sequential circuits - prophet 5
There are also two envelope generators with cv controlls , an cv controlled lfo, an inverter, an attennuator, an gate delay and cv/gate interface."
I should have thought of looking at synrise! Someone once challenged me to find a synth not listed there. I thought I did, but apparently not. I forget what it was though. :)
Update via the maker himself, Mike Metz of Thesis Audio Service: "Here is all the info for the "Metz Synth", just before too much urban legend misinformation starts. This synth appeared in the Keyboard Magazine May 1998 issue as "Keyboard of the Month". I am amazed that someone remebers that.
It is a one-off synth that I built for my personal use out of "leftover" parts from my repair shop. The OSC section is made from an original Minimoog OSC board that I had in stock from repair parts. It has been built in a modular fashion with several options that the Mini never had. Each of the 3 OSCs has mixable waveforms, PWM, coarse and fine tune controls, and individual modulation inputs much like a modular synth. Thats the OSC section on the left.
The right half contains circuitry designed around the SCI Pro-1, not the Prophet 5, but the same thing. It contains a modular VCF with voltaged controlled Co and Rez. There are 2 voltage controlled envelope generators, a voltage controlled LFO, a VCA/envelope generator module, two attenuator / inverter modules, a gate delay module, and the master CV I/O module. All designed around the Curtis CEM circuits."
Side note: per above Mike Metz now runs Thesis Audio Service. It looks like we have a new (old) synth tech.

COMPOSITION AND INTERPRETATION: TECHNICAL NOTES
I have been using an extraordinary device for several years: an Acxel resynthesizer. This musical instrument serves as a synthesizer with subtractive synthesis and additive synthesis as well as a resynthesizer, and has an unparalleled capacity (256 independent oscillators that are programmable in real time). Québec engineer Pierre Guilmette created it. About ten or so working Acxels can still be found worldwide.
Thanks to this device, I developed an interpretation technique that enables me, each time I play a piece, to add improvisations to it while keeping its “essence” intact. The Acxel is so powerful that I no longer need sequencers and I merely use the keyboard as an “On-Off” trigger. After I play some notes, I activate the sustain mode and interpret the music by “sculpting” the sounds on the Acxel’s touch screen. Each sound therefore becomes a complete music that can hold several melodic or noise-like themes. In addition, in order to increase tenfold the power of the device, I sample the sounds that do not need to be modified in real time.
I developed this composition and interpretation method some 13 years ago. However, putting it into practice before owning the Acxel was far more limited."
