Roland CR-8000 Drum Machine

via this auction

"The CR-8000 CompuRhythm was released right after the famous TR-808. The both machines feature the same sound engine for similar sounding instruments. Unfortunately they can't be edited on the CR-8000, although users have reported successfully adding their own decay and pitch modifications to the unit.

The sequencer offers 8 32-step user programmable patterns, 24 preset rhythms and 12 fills/intros (4 user). The beats are programmed by choosing the instrument and then entering the pattern step-by-step with 2 buttons (on/off).

Other controls include volume, tempo, accent and individual levels for the instruments.

There are pedal control inputs , a trigger output and DIN sync for synchronizing the unit with other machines."

Modded KORG MS10 with MIDI

via this auction
"It has been equipped with a Synhouse MIDIJACK II by the previous owner. This allows the synth to be controlled by other midi instruments. I don't own any midi gear, so I never used this function, although it does power on like it is supposed to. I will send along instructions the previous owner gave me. More info can be seen on the Synhouse page.

Also, I added a toggle switch that modifies the frequency modulation range, as seen above the pitch wheel. This basically allows the frequency rate to go from normal to much, much faster than it initially could. You can achieve a LOT of new sounds that wouldn't be normally accessible as a result. The switch is 3-way...both left and right enable the frequency knob to be broadened. The middle position will make some interesting noises with the freq. as well. Please note, the synth can still operate as normal if you choose. The mod is only noticeable if the freq. range is tweaked past the 8 o'clock position. The MF range knob has just been broadened.

Both of these modifications were performed neatly, with a minimum of detraction from the original state of the synth."

KORG Monotrons Hit the US

Word is Monotrons are now available in the US. Check out the Dealers on the right of the site and Monotrons on Ebay for prices.

Official description via KORG:

"Analog on the go!
Analog synths were once massive, temperamental monsters; but no more! The true analog monotron fits in your pocket and is ready to play – anytime, anyplace. Although small enough to hold in one hand, the amazing monotron delivers ginormous and dazzling sounds. Best of all, it's a blast to play. The controls have been streamlined for ease of use. Concentrating on the most important sound parameters, the panel contains only five knobs and one switch. With this level of simplicity, now anyone can easily enjoy the world of analog synthesizers.

Product Highlights:
* Features the same classic analog filter found in the legendary Korg MS-10 & MS-20

* Filter any external source using the audio input jack

* Inspiring, easy-to-play ribbon keyboard

* Intuitive, fun-to-tweak controls

* Full-fledged, true analog synthesizer: VCO, VCF, LFO

* LFO can modulate either pitch of filter cutoff

* LFO Rate knob features cool LED visual indicator.

* Battery operation and palmtop size equals true portability

* Internal speaker/headphone jack lets you enjoy the sound anywhere – alone or with friends!

Ribbon controller keyboard offers easy expression
Borrowing the enjoyment of performing with a simple touch from Korg's wildly popular KAOSS products, the monotron's ribbon controller keyboard takes this ease of use even farther. Simple finger gestures can produce expressive effects such as vibrato and glide.

1VCO, 1VCF, 1LFO – Modular synthesis building blocks
The monotron's circuit is radically simple: one voltage-controlled oscillator, one voltage-controlled filter, and one low frequency oscillator. As a result, the process of sound creation is intuitive, and instantly understandable. And it's tons of fun. The monotron provides the joy of sonic creativity that's at the heart of analog synthesis.

The famous Korg filter
The monotron starts with the same highly acclaimed VCF circuit as KORG's classic MS-10 and original MS-20 semi modular synthesizers, and adds extra oomph to the resonance. Originally released over 30 years ago, these instruments are still coveted today for their aggressive, dynamic filters. The VCF Cutoff knob sets the frequency or tone of the filter; the VCF Peak (resonance) knob adds emphasis.

Semi modular satisfaction
Just as on the original MS-20, the monotron's filter can be "patched into," allowing any external audio source to be processed by the monotron's filter. The input jack (AUX input) built into the monotron's compact body inserts the AUX input into the signal path right before the VCF. This provides a great way to connect a KAOSSILATOR, a keyboard, a guitar, a digital audio player or even an un-mixed track to the monotron and enjoy tone-bending filter effects.

Versatile LFO provides audio – and visual – excitement!
The LFO (Low Frequency Oscillator) can affect either the oscillator pitch or the filter cutoff. Both the speed and the intensity are individually adjustable, so you can create anything from a gentle vibrato to swooping tone changes of galactic proportions. As you turn the LFO Rate knob – featuring an embedded LED – the speed of the modulation effect and the speed of the blinking LED will change in tandem.

Listen anywhere – alone or with friends
The ultimate in compactness, the monotron includes a built-in miniature speaker. Along with the battery operation, this feature allows you to enjoy the monotron everywhere. There's also a headphone output that you can use when creating sounds at home, for recording, or for connecting to an amplifier or PA system."

21st CENTURY DRUM CIRCLE! Cyber Tribal Folk Jam? Life in A Day Entry

YouTube via VJFranzK | July 31, 2010

"In the EARLY hours of July 24th, we were finishing an electronic music show in a downtown LA art district loft, and everyone began to spontaneously jam together! Like a 21st century drum circle, we banged out interlocking rhythms on the pads of our beatboxes, sang and danced the night away! Some critics claim that techno music has no soul or personality, but from this video, you can see that's often not true! I say that some techno and hip hop music represents the modern evolution of "folk music" - which by definition is made "by the people, for the people, with whatever tools they can find". It makes sense in the electronic age that computers should enter this equation - as just another way to express the irrepressible human spirit!"

Replacing the Yamaha DX21 Battery

YouTube via Catabolicdj | July 31, 2010

"After 25 years(!), my DX21's internal battery finally died. So of course the battery needed to be changed. It turns out this is a simple 10-minute repair if you can solder/desolder. You need to purchase a CR2032 battery and it has to have solder tabs. I used the Renata CR2032FH-MFR, although other companies make these. The battery was about $1.50 from Mouser.com. I'm making this video available as a public service to all DX21 owners :-) The batteries on these don't last forever although they do last a long time. HD Video available."

Minor scratch on front panel but nothing that major. Also replaced were a lot of opamps. This was all done as precautionary maintenanceThe synth sounds phenomenal. . It should be good for many years to come. Must pickup in the PA/NJ area."
