MINIMOOG MINI-DOCUMENTARY 1970s & New Moog Legacy Site

A Brief History of the Minimoog, 1970s

YouTube Uploaded by MoogMusicInc on Apr 28, 2011

Secret to the Minimoog sound comes in after 6:10.

I'm guessing this and the new site is the huge new project from Moog.
"Follow the life of the Minimoog Synthesizer from its inception through its prolific contributions to poplular music throughout the last 4 decades.

In this first installment documenting the journey of the Minimoog synth through the 1970's, we explore the musicians and the people that were instrumental in bringing the instrument to prominence. We also sit with one of Moog Music's earliest engineers, Bill Hemsath, who recalls the process of the Minimoog's birth and sheds some light on what sets the Moog synthesizer apart from other analog synths."

Check out the new Moog Legacy Site here. The whole site appears to have gotten a facelift.

Messing with the Modcan Super Delay

Modcan SuperDelay first ten minutes by parasitk
'I just received a Modcan SuperDelay in the mail today as part of a trade. Ten minutes after I installed it I recorded this. Just getting a feel for all the sonic options. Modulating the regeneration (feedback), delay time, trying the tracking filter on vs. off.

Starts off fully dry, then I shift the balance to fully wet. The wet/dry mix alternates variably from there.

View the pic for the basic patch.

Sound source is Modcan Dual VDO. The Modcan VCDO and Cyndustries Zeroscillator are being used as LFOs. Blacet Binary Zone provides the sequence, and Metalbox Dual AD some envelopin'."

Analogue Solutions Vostok Demo (Kind of...)

YouTube Uploaded by FatSynthDude on May 4, 2011

"The studio's in like a hundred million pieces, so I thought I'd finally sit down and do that Vostok demo I'd been meaning to do, but with a little bit of a twist. Instead of just recording dry Vostok and/or multitracking, I sampled a bunch of percussive noises into a Korg ESX-1 and an ES-1. The pad sound was made by sampling into an ESI-2000 and then sending the output through the ES-1, the bass and lead synths were sampled into the ESX-1's keyboard parts, and then a live Vostok track was sent through the ESX-1 for gating. All sounds did originate from the Vostok. For most sounds, only delay and reverb effects were added. There is some chorusing on the pad and the kick and snare sounds were sent through a DECIMATOR!!!!!!! (CRUSH, DECIMATE, DESTROY!!!) I really enjoyed making this and hopefully will get to do something like this again soon. :-D"

"This weekend I found a nice TD-alike sequence. The Doepfer Dark Time sequence runs trough the Waldorf Micro Q (on 2 note polyphony) and than through the Moog Little Phatty. The interesting thing is that I use the 2x8 option of the DDT, so 1 row is for one note of the moog ( 2 osc.) and the Waldorf (3 osc.setup) and the other row is for the second note of the Waldorf (also 3 osc. setup). I had again a lot of recording problems (both audio and video) so this is not the best track. May be I must put some money in other things then synths and sequencers. The Moog is echoed with the Yamaha E1005 and the Waldorf with the Ibanez DM1000.

"This video is a demonstration of the Simmons Digital Clap Trap. Watch, listen and be amazed as the Clap Trap adds hand clap and noise in sync with the audio input. The audio source used as the clap trigger is a music cue from a '60s TV show set in Hawaii and, later in the clip, from a movie that may have been about a cat from outer space. Source audio was sampled and looped with a Boss SP-202 (Dr. Sample). Both sounds are then run through the BOSS SE-50 stereo effects processor which is used first only as a dry mixer with a phase effect setting used at the end."

Audio Oscillators with the LZX Visionary

YouTube Uploaded by lzxindustries on May 4, 2011

"This (long) tutorial shows how you can use some audio eurorack oscillators to create and modify video signals for use with an LZX Visionary system. Modules used include the WMD Gamma Wave Source, Wiard Oscillator, MakeNoise QMMG, and the Toppobrillo TWF.
Sorry about the poor production and editing!

Two notes: Some of the short video clips in the beginning used an LZX TVFKG and video mixer as well as the modules in this demo.
The output of the Wiard Oscillator always appears as a pulse wave because the input to the VBM was clipping. It is actually possible to get the full variety of waveforms when using the Voltage Interface I, or by more carefully setting the VBM controls.

Tutorial created by Johnny Woods, May 2011."

All done with a friendly wink at rezfilter who inspired me a lot .... (still waiting for my Oberkorn)"

Telemark meets Doepfer

Uploaded by jakobsweb on Mar 13, 2011

"This is a song made with my very new synthesizer Telemark by Analogue Solutions. It's semi-modular and thus goes very well with my other modular and semi-modular stuff. The intro sound is done with the Telemark as well as another later on. It has a great sounding 12db multimode filter.
The other stuff I used in this song are: two Doepfer A-100 systems, Cwejman S1 MK2, DSI Prophet 08, Vermona analog drums DRM1 MKIII, Moog Voyager ... and a lil' drumloop ... all arranged, mixed and mastered using Cubase 6 and some Waves plug-ins. Feel free and invited to comment or ask questions. Enjoy!

Here is a list of some of the Doepfer A-100 modules that I used in case you are interested:
A-111 (3x), A-108, A-140, A-141, A-143-1, A-143-2, A-143-3, A-183-2, A-121, A-110 (3x), A-188-1, A-130, A-131, A-138a, A-138b, A-138m, A-151, A-180, A-134 (2x), A-181 (2x)
The Telemark was modulated by Doepfer A-147 (VC-LFO) - 2 times via multiple.
The Cwejman's LFO was gate triggered by the Doepfer A-160 clock divider."

04 Roland-Ready GR-700 Turbo Synth - Final Release Version 5 Roland Factory Software

YouTube Uploaded by WayneJoness on Feb 7, 2011

via this auction
"There are four documented versions of GR-700 software noted in the GR-700 service manual. Version four (1.4) is the most common software found in the GR-700. However, some of the last GR-700s made by Roland shipped with the rare, version 5 (1.5) software. The GR-700 Turbo has the rare version 5.0 software! Unlike the earlier upgrades, version 5.0 software does not add any new features, but instead improves on the most neglected aspect of the GR-700: faster and more accurate tracking. On average, version 5.0 is 1.5 milliseconds faster than version 4.0. The GR-700 Turbo does not reach the speed and accuracy of modern synthesizers, but it is an improvement over earlier versions, and includes the final revisions of the GR-700 factory patches."

"Interface and Sound Board Chips (2 chips total) + 128 Additional Patches
Rare, final version 1.5 operating system EPROM chips
Improves on speed and tracking of previous versions
28.53 ms (version 1.5) average response time versus 29.87 ms (version 1.4)
Easy to install and replace
Allows change in reference pitch from the original A=442 standard (improvement over version 1.1)
Fixes sustain level failure when in EDIT mode (improvement over version 1.2)
Adjusts pitch range for "B" to be same as all other notes (improvement over version 1.3)
Includes final revisions of the factory patches for banks 1-4
PLUS - 2 Complete banks of original Roland GR-700 alternate sounds on print outs, 18 pages (64 patches x 2)
More information on hardware and software revisions on the GR-700 resource webpage
Questions? Feel free to email me!

About these Roland GR-700 Version 1.5 software EPROM chips:
I have been able to document five different versions of software for the GR-700. The most common version in my experience is version 4. The GR-700 service notes explain the differences for versions 1, 2, 3 and 4. I have seen a few GR-700s with version 5 software. What version software does your synth have? This is easy to check! Power up the GR-700 while holding down the STRING SELECT NO. 4 button. The display will show the software version, 1-4 means version 4. 1-2 indicates version 2 software. Incidentally, the patch corresponding to the software version will be selected when doing this procedure.

Initializing Patches:
It is possible to reinitialize the first four banks of patches for the GR-700, banks 1 though 4. There is no way to recover patches in banks 5 through 8 if they have been lost. To reinitialize patches in banks 1 - 4, turn on the power switch while pressing down the WRITE (copy) button. Be sure to have the memory protect turned off.

Roland GR-700 - Final Release Version 5 Roland Factory Software
Roland made it very easy to change or upgrade the operating system in the Roland GR-700 guitar synthesizers. There are two main boards in the GR-700, the interface board, which attaches to the top of the GR-700, and which connects to the switches, output jackes, display, etc. And the sound or voice board. The voice board is on the bottom on the GR-700.

Each board uses a 64K EPROM chip for its operating system/operating parameters. One chip is marked as "IF" for the interface board, and "SH" for the sound or voice board. Simply open the GR-700 up, remove the existing chips and install the new chips, then power the GR-700 up. There is no special initialization procedure. The software is loaded when the unit is turned on. These chips also contain the bank 1-4 factory patches. Initializing the sound banks in the GR-700 will load these patches from the "SH" chip."

"I thought you might like these photos. I recently fell into the black hole known as Eurorack in the Modular galaxy. After a lot of research I ordered a batch of modules from Analogue Haven (Thank you, Shawn Cleary!) and I emailed Tiptop about their cases. After emailing back and forth a bit, it turns out Gur Milstein (of Tiptop) & I live about five miles apart, which led to me having the great fortune of being the proud owner of Tiptop case #1 (Thank you, Gur!). I have been happily patching away ever since. I have a few other modules on order and I also have the option of using my Moog theremin (with CV outs), ARP Axxe, Microcon and a few other goodies I have with this rig, but it will be a self-contained instrument."

via Syndrom
"We released an album, "Reactor4" using just analog synthesizers and effects. I have sent you two links to YouTube videos. The album details can be found here:
http://www.syndrom-records.com/reactor4.html"

"'Evakuierung' (excerpt)
This track features a Moog Prodigy processed through a Roland RE-501 Chorus Echo. Some of the distortion on the album were produced with an Electro Harmonix Big Muff pedal. The vocal recording is the evacuation message that was played from loudspeakers during the evacuation of the city near Chernobyl in 1986. It was processed through an A-120 Low Pass Filter from a Doepfer A-100 modular.

'Prypiat'
This track represents the derelict city after the evacuation and chaos is over. The lonely melodic parts are a Moog Prodigy played through the Roland RE-501, with lots of spring reverb. The Moog's envelopes were set with a slow attack."
