"The Korg DSS-1, released in 1986, is a monster hybrid of analog, digital, and sampling-based synthesis. It has the best Voltage Controlled Filter (VCF) that Korg ever bestowed on a synthesizer (it was also the last VCF-based synth that Korg ever made). Even today, a resonant filter sweep from the DSS-1 can put all but the mightiest analog synths to shame! It's an eight-voice polysynth with two oscillators per voice, and a unison mode that allows you to stack up all 16 oscillators into one very phatt and powerful monosynth."

Moog Model 15 AM Amplitude Modulation DEMO

Published on May 3, 2017 Roberto Raineri-Seith
Update: original video was pulled and re-published.

"Moog Model 15 AM / Amplitude Modulation DEMO

Amplitude Modulation provides results similar to Ring Modulation and was / is an alternative technique to produce those distinctive timbres on the Moog modulars that didn't feature a Ring Modulator. Of course it works with any other modular system with at least 2 VCAs. Delay and reverb added.

The basic patch shown in the video can be found at page 127 of the Moog Modular Synthesizer owner's manual (2015 re/edition) and is as follow:

VCO 1 signal out to VCA 1 signal input with fixed control voltage (gain) raised to about 40%; VCO 2 signal out to VCA 2 CONTROL (frequency) input; VCA 1 signal out to VCA 2 signal in; VCA 2 signal out to amplifier;

Of course you can also send the VCA 2 signal out to the 907A or 904A filters and then to the amp"

"Using the Erogenous Tones Radar and VC8 to gate and modulate sound sources from the rest of the modular rig. Some of the Radars slope generators are triggered by the Tiptop Audio Circadian Rhythm and used as envelopes, and some are cycling and used as LFOs. The VC8 is used as both VCAs for gating rhythmic sounds and as a mixer.

RADAR, from Erogenous Tones, is the one stop shop for Envelopes and LFOs. It is a monstrous octo-slope generator with options for looping envelopes, Attack-Decay envelopes, and Attack-Sustain-Release envelopes. Envelope shapes can be morphed from logarithmic to linear to exponential, with CV inputs for modulation of speed and shape. Also included are switches to adjust how RADAR responds to triggers, analog and digital. In analog mode, it responds like a classic slope generator, with the frequency not held steady when changing the rise and fall times. In Digital mode, it maintains the frequency when the shapes are changed, turning the RADAR into waveshapable LFOs and even audio rate oscillators. There is nothing quite like this modulation machine.

"Fresh out of the box for its first test. 8 hp of goodness to for getting the Nord Drum to behave itself with modular triggers.

The level of incoming triggers/gates are interpreted as velocity when converted to midi. There are 3 selectable scaling curves for this process. You can also increase the sensitivity of the trigger inputs via a jumper on the back. Button on the front panel to mute all channels is a nice performance feature.

Out of the box it has presets for the Nord Drum default midi setup and another for GM style drum synths. These are fully editable. Last setting is remembered on power up.

Little demo uses the original Pamela's Workout to deliver fixed level triggers. These are then passed through a VCA modulated with clocked random voltages to vary their levels to get timbral variations from the ND. The ND comes into the modular via the 4MS dual delay. Modular output is recorded dry.

(The new Pams Workout would probably work even better and need less patching)"

Deckard's Dream Website Live - 1st Official Trailer & Demos

Deckard's Dream - first trailer

Published on May 3, 2017 Deckard's Dream

This one in directly via the man himself, Roman Filippov.

"Deckard’s Dream is an 8-voice polyphonic analogue synthesizer inspired by a certain cinematic sound from the late 1970s and early 1980s. Using technology available today (and in the near future), you will be able to play the Deckard’s Dream with stunning expressive control."

Update via the FAQ on how close this will be to the original CS80: "We were inspired by this wonderful synthesizer when were designing the Deckard’s Dream, but had to do everything from scratch. No single part of a circuit is equal to the CS-80, first of all because it was done using custom and exclusive chips back in the 70s. However we did pay attention to many details of the synth architecture, oscillator waveshapes (like the sawtooth glitch which is a big part of the CS-80 sound), filter topology and of course the modulation possibilities. With the help of modern technology, it became possible to have the same level of expression as the CS-80. However MPE technology this expression even further with the addition of polyphonic pitchbend etc. Despite all this, please don’t expect exactly the same behavior – even if it is very close, it’s still a very modern synthesizer."

Also the VCOs are not discrete, but CEM3340s: "We will post the BOM and step by step illustrated build instructions at the end of May. Most of the parts are generic and come from Mouser. You may want to buy 17x CEM3340 oscillator chips from ON-Chip in advance, the unit also uses 59x V2164 VCA chips. Both in DIP package."

The website is now live at http://www.deckardsdream.com

Some additional details:

"16 VCOs

8-voice polyphony with two independent synthesizer layers per voice, discrete waveshapers help to reproduce the oddness of the original waveforms. Autotune keeps all 16 VCOs tracking perfectly, we even offer the detune settings for a vintage feel.

Polyphonic aftertouch and MPE

MIDI polyphonic aftertouch gives deckard’s dream expression that has only been possible on a very small number of synthesizers. MPE technology (using controllers by ROLI, LinnStrument, Haken) takes this even further with the addition of poly pitch bend.

Yes, it’s DIY kit as well

Besides the built units we provide DIY kits with all digital SMT parts preinstalled. A very detailed building manual, large thru-hole components and a simple calibration procedure will allow even beginners to build this kit.

MIDI, USB, VST/AU editor

With the addition of MIDI implementation, 256 presets and a software editor provided by Spektro Audio, this vintage inspired poly synth is at home in any modern studio.

Analogue effects and CV inputs

1U rackmount expander is coming later this summer: 16 assignable CV inputs, analogue ring-modulator and chorus, missing Sustain I/II controls. may be used as a standalone effects box and a cv-2-midi convertor.

Designed and built in Japan

We build the synth in Tokyo, Japan and use high quality components and hardware. Shipping is free anywhere in the world."

The SynthSummitShow episode 18: John Bowen synth designs

Streamed live 5 hours ago Flux302 of Fluxwithit.com

Fascinating bit of synth history with John Bowen who started his career with synths during the early days of Moog Music, followed by Sequential Circuits. Dave Rossum in the early days of E-mu is mentioned as well. John now of course runs John Bowen Synth Design, and is the creator of the Solaris. You can find previous interviews with John at various synth events in the archives here.

Interesting little bit of trivia at 41:55 regarding John drawing some of the Prophet-VS waveforms as estimations of the waveforms on the front panel of I'm guessing either the KORG DW-8000 or DW-6000. It's interesting to know they are in there. It's worth noting all of the Prophet-VS waveforms and Waldorf, and therefor PPG waveforms, are in his new Solaris x 4, meaning four independent oscillators capable of having separate waveforms or wavetables from each. The Prophet-VS vector synthesis of course made its way to Yamaha's SY-22/TG-33, followed by Korg and the Wavestation where it morphed into vector sequencing. He also worked on the original version of the KORG OASYS which turned into the PCI card version. He then left to work with Creamware on Scope, on some of the first software models of vintage synthesizers. It's pretty incredible when you think of all the connections between synths John has not only influenced, but created over the years.

Note the Solaris 1U rackmount at 1:11:48. Two were made a couple of years ago but the idea was scrapped. John spoke with Axel Hartmann on it and they agreed that the lack of UI made it not worth it. The Solaris has over 1200 editable parameters and part of the magic behind the Solaris keyboard is the UI which makes it all easily accessible.

Funny note regarding the Yamaha DX7 at 1:23:00. John is referring to the Jellinghuas controller for the DX7 after that, and Flux is referring to the DTronics DT7 based on it.

Modded Oberheim OB-12 w/ Custom White Knobs

via this auction

"Excellent condition OB-12 modded by the Blue Lantern guy.

From the original auction in August 2016:

"Up for sale is a customized oberheim OB-12 viscount synthesizer. The following modifications were done by myself:

-main output upgraded to hi-fidelity LM4562 dual hi spec op-amps.
-aux out upgraded to hi-fidelity LM4562 dual hi spec op-amps.

-Graphic LCD replaced by modern black and white color. Contrast Knob installed for manual contrast adjusting on the fly. The adjuster has a soft rubber knob, locatied near the screen.
-led replaced with colorful type. UV, BLUE, WHITE, ORANGE, YELLOW on most of the menu related and FX related sections.
-Knobs upgraded to hi spec cream color knobs with brass inserts.

I have the keyboard, and the USA power plug. The manual can still be downloaded online.

The synth looks great however, the analog output doesn't work. No headphone, no main, no aux. The digital output works fine. It should be a simple repair to get a new D/A converter in it, however, it has never bothered me. Making allowances for a repair in the price."
