Behringer Reveals Upcoming JT-16 - 16 Voice Jupiter-8 Clone

via Behringer

"After many years, we have finally created the first prototype of our upcoming JT-16, a 16-voice polyphonic synth. Our product engineer, Gilles, who is also a synth enthusiast, couldn't stop playing with it, but we managed to pry it away from him for a moment to capture it on camera. Sorry Gilles:-) Currently, the synth is in its very early stages, and we are now focusing on debugging and implementing the necessary software.

We kindly ask for your patience, but we assure you that this beauty will come to fruition. What do you think?"

Behringer previously showed their JT-2 desktop/eurorack format JP-8, as well as the Saturn mini synth.

Behringer's Cool Audio Clones the Roland BA662A

This one is in via Jose of sonicplug.com, spotted on Future Music Spain.

Per Behringer:

"Great news. Our sister company Coolaudio who designs mixed architecture semiconductors has just released the holy grail of synthesizer chips - a clone of the BA662A.

It is the THE chip responsible for the unique sound of so many classic synths.

Not only has Coolaudio cloned the BA662 “A” version, which is the highest specified version, they also managed to greatly improve noise performance and included even two chips in one packaging.

We’re beyond excited:-)"

The BA662 was used in the Juno-6/60/106, JX-3P and TB-303, Jupiter-4, and Jupiter-8.

via AMSynths:

"The BA662 is a custom made DC controlled variable transconductance amplifier (or OTA) that Roland had manufactured by Rohm from the late 1970’s and is now obsolete. There are two types of chip with different suffices; the A version has been selected for lower offset than the B version. They are further classified by gain/gm. The BA662B can only replace another BA662B, whilst an A can be used in either application.

To quote Roland from the 100M Service Manual: 'Color has great importance in circuits of some models'. However there is nothing mystical about the sound of the BA662, it is just a reasonable good OTA chip which is often carefully matched and selected."

Note Open Music Labs made a clone as well (last edited in 2014):

"They just don’t make IC’s like they used to, and is this case, they just don’t make them at all! So, we decided to bring the BA662 back to life, in all it’s Frankenstein glory. This is a direct replica (to the best of our knowledge) of the now obsolete OTA, made from well matched transistor pairs. It can be used as a drop-in replacement for most applications. So if you have an old synth or effects pedal that is no longer synth’ing or effecting, this just might be the cure...

The BA662 clone is a replica of the very rare BA662 OTA which was used by Roland in a number of their synthesizers and effects pedals from the 80's. The internal wiring of the BA662 was reverse engineered from an original part by applying external voltages and currents, and seeing how it responded. For example, you can find out how many transistors are at the top and bottom of the output stage by measuring the saturation voltages. From this it was found that they used Wilson current mirrors. Also, by measuring the current consumption under varying signal levels, the value of the emitter resistor on the buffer stage was found. A fair bit of the anaylsis was based on recollections from seeing a datasheet a long time ago, and the fact that OTA's have very similar topologies."

NAMM 2020 - Introducing System 100 - Behringer Modular Synthesizer

Published on Jan 16, 2020 BEHRINGER

"Introducing eleven new Eurorack compatible modules – all of them authentic reproductions of original “System 100M” circuitry from 1975. With ultra-fat oscillators and creamy filters the sound became famous in the early 80s used by artists like Depeche Mode, Human League, Tears For Fears but also Vangelis, Tangerine Dream and even Aphex Twin.

If you’re into super-fat bass sounds, in-your-face leads or flowing soundscapes, definitely check them out! All modules are incredibly feature rich, have tremendous patching capabilities and a lot of them come with dual function, like:

- 112 dual oscillator with 3 waveforms, PWM and two sync modes
- 121 dual filter with 3-channel mixer per filter
- 130 dual VCA, again with dual 3-channel mixers
- 140 dual envelope has 3 outputs per ADSR plus a built in LFO that can be triggered and phase synced
- 173 gates module comes even with four gates that can switch audio and 6 quad buffered multiples
- 297 has a dual portamento controller plus two independent CV mixers
- 150 brings a ring modulator, 2 noise generators, syncable LFO and a sample and hold generator
- 172 module delivers a 6-step phase-shifter, an analog delay, an LFO and a gate delay
- 305 is an output module a four-band parametric EQ, a 4-channel mixer, line and separate headphone output and even a tuning oscillator
- 182 there is a powerful analog sequencer with either dual 8 steps or 1-16 steps and tempo, portamento and gate time controls
- 110 is a complete synth voice with VCO, VCA and filter in a single module

#NAMM2020"

Update: Word is this might be an AMSynths joint project. From their website:

"Behringer Partnership In June 2019 I joined forces with Behringer to design analog synthesizers that will be manufactured in China and sold to customer across the world. I am working on a number of projects which I will let Behringer announce when they are ready. AMSynths is continuing to grow with more Euro Rack modules being manufactured, as well as complete synthesizers like the SH05 and Jupiter One. In 2019 I started to restore vintage music gear, and you will see the repair stories in my Blog. I am also creating videos of my modules and the vintage synths that they emulate."

Update: some product sheet scans in in via Soviet Space Child and a note on one of the forums from Uli.

"I like to share with you the initial drafts of our M100 Eurorack Series.

These are 13 MID's or concept documents we create for every single product as part of our PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) process before we hand them over to our R&D departments for development.

We haven't decided yet which of these modules we will actually produce as it is important that we achieve a certain production volume.

As usual do we appreciate your valuable feedback which will give a better indication of validity of these products.

Thanks!

Uli"

The Roland Jupiter-X & XM Story and Why Roland Has No Plans for a New JUPITER-8

I don't like to critique but I thought the following was a little funny (also see my note on Behringer below):

"We are very aware of the very strong passion that synth fans have for the JUPITER-8, and some continue to wait for us to introduce a true analog version. This is something we do not plan to do. Our founder Mr. Kakehashi always said, 'Never chase a ghost', and I really understand his meaning. 'Chasing the ghost' of the original JUPITER-8 or TR-808 does not make sense as we will never catch them, and this effort would not align with our vision for the future. Roland has developed many legendary products throughout our history that came from our drive to always design the future by applying the latest technology and our unique know-how from each era. This is our DNA which will never change."

Preceded by:

"Different from the base Virtual Analog of ZEN-Core, the ABM-powered 'Model Bank' synths in the JUPITER-X and Xm reproduce the total character of specific vintage synths including the JUPITER-8, JUNO-106, JX-8P, and SH-101, all with incredible precision. For these synths, we did deep behavioral analysis of elements such as the filter’s curve, range, and response speed, which are different for each model, of course. We even recreate characteristics including oscillator drift driven by temperature changes- we actually put a physical temperature sensor inside the JUPITER-X and Xm to help with this!"

The above is quoted from The Roland Jupiter-X & XM Story posted on Roland's site. There's more to the post, of course, so do check it out, but what I thought was a little funny was the 'Never chase a ghost' quote. They are clearly doing just that, only in the digital realm, not analog. But... they have ventured in analog with the JD-Xa and JD-Xi. Do I think Roland should clone the Jupiter-8 and their vintage analog? No. For one reason: Behringer. Behringer would just put them under with cheaper models, so if I were Roland, I wouldn't bother. I'm guessing the digital clones are more cost effective as well. I'd stay focused on new products just like they are doing now.  Seriously, Behringer has made it so no company will ever bother cloning their previous products.  I heard that Behringer's goal is to not only offer clones of vintage synths, but to become the largest synth manufacturer for both vintage and new designs.  Simply put, the only way to compete will be to create gear that users want and Behringer does not offer for less.

New Behringer K-20 - Korg MS-20 Desktop Clone Spotted & WASP Deluxe Trademark & Potential Specs

These are in via Soviet Space Child.

Some info on the K-20 below. Curious how a previously existing name for a synth can be trademarked. The trademark was actually revealed December 2017, but you can see filing from Music Group IP (Behringer's parent company) below published in 2018. You can also find the initial list of synths on Behringer's radar here, including trademarks. The Pro-1, MS-101, and VC340 are readying release, and there was the Jupiter-8 tease here.

via Musictribe on the K-20:

"I'll be honest, I love Korg mono synths. One of my all-time favourites is the Korg 770, this little guy's older sister. First off I'm amazed at the form factor in such a small footprint. This thing sounds awesome. Having a high pass and low pass with adjustable peak is amazing for fine tweaking tones. My 770 doesn't have that. One could get lost for hours just patching to different places and finding an endless sea of sounds. I never had an MS-20 so this was a learning experience of wonderment and at times pure awe. What a flexible little monster. Most definitely a generator of sounds from outer space. Add some tape delay and I'd go missing for hours on end. Wonderful job on this guy."

On the WASP Deluxe:

Wasp Deluxe – based on the rare EDP WASP synthesizer:

Legendary analog synthesizer with dual OSC design allows for insanely fat music creation
Authentic reproduction of original “Wasp Deluxe” circuitry with matched transistors and JFETs
Pure analog signal path based on authentic OSC, VCF and VCA designs
3 variable oscillator shapes with pulse / ramp and enhanced mode for ultimate sounds
Switchable, multi-mode VCF with Lo, Hi, Band and Notch modes
Flexible LFO with 4 waveform shapes, frequency and pitch modulation control
2 analog Envelope Generators for modulation of VCF and VCA
Noise generator dramatically expands waveform generation
16-voice Poly Chain allows combining multiple synthesizers for up to 16 voice polyphony
Complete Eurorack solution – main module can be transferred to a standard Eurorack Case
29 controls give you direct and real-time access to all important parameters

and today it came up in my head & I said "NOW!"
I got this one down so a real Guitarist & Vocalist
can rock out & sing to it, it's a Techno / Industrial
version at 138 BPM. I think the original is 135? 136?
I'm not a drummer so you tell me! ;) - Tap Tempo
here we go! This is mostly Bass & Drums version
using the Korg Kronos w/ Roland Jupiter-8 Bass,
Brass & Leads Samples from the Reverb Roland
Synth Collection Sample Pack (Link Below) and
then I used the Behringer DeepMind 6 for the
full on analog acid bass line. Sweet to use w/ MIDI!
Drums of course are GENERAL MIDI! :)

MIDI FILE FRIDAY
This is my favorite Gustav Holst work from "The Planets",
I used the Korg Kronos using the Reverb Roland Synth
Collection Sample Pack Jupiter-8 Juno-106 Samples.
The Behringer DeepMind 6 I used patch "Lost Verb" for
the deep analog space drone. There are some serious
pitch jumps, using samples in classic works can be very
tricky, so PLEASE CLASSICAL WIZARDS BE KIND. This is
a synthesizer adaptation AND WAS VERY HARD TO DO!
Anyways, it's the 2019 Blade Runner Dream Sequence Mix.
(Not really but it just turned 2019 & I'm a Sci-Fi geek!)
I love the combination of Roland Juno-106 & Jupiter-8
Samples, I used Juno-106 "106 Impact" & "JP8 Mode Brass"
Sweep sample is "JP8 Shriekback" for those 80's LUSH
Sweeps! ;) My FAVORITE!

Starring Wayne Coyne as The Toecutter by Suit & Tie Guy

Published on Oct 5, 2018 suitandtieguy

"Testing out out some gain staging modifications on my Jupiter-6 to improve the very disappointing sound of its filters, and taking the new Behringer D out for a spin. I used the Novation Circuit to sequence the two synthesisers and drums are from the TR-8.

Gotta once again thank Synthmania for the very kind gift of the D. Thank you my friend!

Reverb is board reverb from a Behringer UFX1204, delay is a custom tape echo patch on the TC Flashback X4. Reverb and delay on the drums is internal to the TR-8.

Recorded to iPod Touch via Tascam iXR courtesy of Tascam.

Let's face it Wayne Coyne is the only guy who could effectively play The Toecutter if we had to cast Mad Max in 2018."
