Dubstep and Emergence of Cicadas セミはダブステップで踊れるか

YouTube Published on Jul 13, 2012 by jetdaisuke

"In these 3 years, every summer, I kept on taking pictures of cicadas' emergence. I needed very long time to make this time-lapse video.
I took all pictures by Canon EOS series (EOS Kiss X3, X4, 60D) with long time exposure. And I made this wobble bass sound track with KORG Kaossilator 2. I used the MacBook Air for editing and rendering.

Realistic Moog MG-1 with Audio Input Mod

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.
via this auction

SN 1846 or 1946

"This MG-1 has been refurbished, tuned, and calibrated at Syntaur, and is fully functional. All switches and pots have been cleaned, so there are no glitchy notes or scratchy pots. The power supply has been recapped, for many more years of good service. The infamous black goo has been removed, and new dust shields have been added to all slide pots and switches (see last photo).

Cosmetically:

About 8.0 out of 10. The front panel is great, with only a very minor dent near the Detune slider; this shows up well in the last photo, but really is almost unnoticable (can't even see it in the other photos). The end and back panels are in great shape as well. Some of the aluminum toggle switches show some dulling of the finish. Keys are clean, but two of them (lowest B and C) have small chips in the bottom front surface (see first photo), and some have minor scratching. The bottom panel looks really good. The red LED has been replaced with a sexy purple LED (oooh!).

Audio Input Mod:

We have added an audio input circuit, to allow the wonderful Moog filter to be used to process external audio. But instead of drilling holes in this piece of vintage gear, we have done it in a way that is 100% non-destructive and reversible. The right Tape In jack has been disabled and is used for this input; should you prefer the original configuration, it is a very simple procedure to reverse this mod."

Casio FZ-10M Digital Sampling Synthesizer

via this auction

"The FZ-10m is an eight voice, monotimbral digital synthesizer/sampler rack (3U) with flexible I/O (2 inputs, mix output, 8 individual outputs, RS232, MIDI). Waveforms can be sampled (16b, 9/18/36kHz, 64 sample points, 2MB memory), additive (48 harmonics), hand drawn (similar to Korg DSS-1) or preset (6 waves available). Sample editing includes 2 loops, reverse, mix, cross mix. Resonant, low pass digital filter and digital amplifier are controlled by 8 stage envelope generators, LFO and velocity/aftertouch. Patch memory contains 8 user locations (also has 3.5" DSHD disk drive).

The FZ-10M is the rack-module version of the FZ-1 with 2MB internal memory and XLR inputs and outputs. Dated by today's standards, the FZ-1 is a neat piece of Casio history to own but could never replace your current sampler. With the look and features you'd expect from a vintage pro-sampler, this Casio has been used by Underworld, Kronos Quartet, Dee Lite, 2 Live Crew, KMD, and Kitaro.

Features:

Aftertouch: Modifies LFO and EGs
Architecture Class: additive subtractive sampler
Audio IO: Headphones, 2 audio inputs 8 individual, TRS and XLR mix
Audio Source: The waveform can be a sample, an additive wave (48 harmonics), hand drawn (similar to Korg DSS-1), or a preset wave (i.e. random, pulse, saw, square, double sine, saw/pulse). Samples are 16 bit (9, 18, 36kHz) with up to 64 sample points. Sample editing includes 2 loops, reverse, mix, cross mix.
Communication Interface: MIDI In, Out, Thru, 25 pin RS232 communication port
Effects: None
EG: Dedicated, 8 stage EG's modify DCF and DCA
Expansion: 3.5" 2HD Disk drive
Filter: Resonant, low pass
Form Factor: 3U rack
Key Scaling: Switch samples and modify EGs rate/level
LFO: Modifies pitch, amplitude, or filter level. Waveforms include up saw, down saw, random, sine, square and triangle. LFO also features delay and key sync

Polyphony: 8
Power: AC (IEC C13 to NEMA 5-15P)
Released: 1987

DIY MIDI Keyboard Encoder

YouTube Published on Jul 13, 2012 by HarryMatic
Channel moved to Harry Axten

"This is going to be part of a project which will add a full size keyboard to a Korg Monotron, along with other modifications. It is a two octave keyboard (which was liberated from a well and truly ruined keyboard controller). The control circuitry was built by me on stripboard, and uses a pre-programmed PIC microcontroller bought from http://picsynth.000space.com/midi.html

Although it does not use velocity sensitive keys, the fixed velocity can be set using a potentiometer. I had to assemble a new circuit board which was attached under the keys, on which were 24 tactile switches. As a key is pressed, it closes the switch. The keys are arranged in a 2 * 12 matrix, although the PIC software supports up to a 4 * 12 matrix.

The sounds in the video are generated from some of the softsynths that come with GarageBand."

TR-909 + Monotron Delay = Elbows Out

YouTube Published on Jul 12, 2012 by siedgey

"Today has been a good day. Just have a listen to this and you'll see why. In this video the mighty TR-909 goes head to head with Korg's £34.99 Monotron Delay. Firstly, let me say this: go out and buy a Monotron Delay right now. Go on.

It's an amazing little box - it can make great little spacey sound effects etc if you use the ribbon pad, but its best feature by a mile is the delay. It really is an amazing sounding analog-style delay! It feeds back into itself like you would feed back into a tape delay and it has such a great tone that I have been using it as an aux send from my mixer rather alongside some much bigger, more expensive delays...

But then it goes a stage further, as it has an input into which you can plug anything. Hence the natural machine to plug in was the 909, and when you crank up the volume shit goes crazy.

Go and buy one immediately.

Appears to be in good condition—powers up, but hasn't been tested more than that. All keys/switches etc seem to work. Comes with original instruction manual, legs, case for legs, two foot pedals. Leg case has a few punctures where the legs broke through, but other than that is in good shape.

This is a gorgeous instrument.

Summer NAMM: KOMA Elektronik Releases the KOMMANDER!

"The KOMA Elektronik KOMMANDER is ready for shipping!

Berlin based musical instrument manufacturer announces the KOMMANDER, a 59 EUR X/Y CV Motion Controller!

Want to create the perfect filter sweep, manually trigger a gate or step through a sequencer? No more need to turn knobs or to patch up a lot of modules, the KOMMANDER makes it simple: just plug it into a CV input on your (modular) synthesizer, move your hand over the device and you are able to control it with your hands, feet or nose, yes: just like a theremin: Kommand and Konquer!

The KOMMANDER is a handheld dual infrared X-Y motion controller that makes controlling your electronic instruments intuitive and fun. The device measures the distance to your hand or any other surface and sends out corresponding CV signals between 0 and 8 volts. The closer you have your hand to the KOMMANDER, the higher the output voltage. This will allow you to create complex synth sounds, trigger a drum machine, control your KOMA effect pedals or any other instrument that is capable of receiving CV signals.

KOMA knows that some equipment can only accept CV signals up to 3V or 5V, that's why they fitted the KOMMANDER with attenuators, which are accessible in the back of the unit. The attenuators connected to the CV outputs allow you to attenuate the maximum voltage output, so you can e.g. set the range from 0V to 5V instead of 0V to 8V. Easy!

Because of the innovative circuit design there is no interference from sunlight or stage light, so the musician can use it wherever she or he wants. Just plug the KOMMANDER into your Eurorack Modular System, Buchla, Moog, Roland or any other synthesizer and create! Please note: The first run of the KOMMANDER is only 200 units, so be quick!

Specifications:

• Strong die cast aluminium box with great black metal design
• 2 IR sensors with optical crosstalk
• 4 mini jack outputs (2 x Gate / 2 x CV (one of each per sensor)
• 4 Sensing range trimmers on the back
• Between 0 - 8V CV output (but you can f.i. set the output to 0 – 3V or 0 - 5V as well)
• 9V DC input

Availability and pricing:

The KOMMANDER is available at KOMA Elektronik's webstore at http://www.koma-elektronik.com
and at selected KOMA Elektronik Dealers worldwide for 59.00 EUR / 75.00 USD (incl. VAT).

Summer NAMM 2012: AIR Music Technology

YouTube Published on Jul 12, 2012 by soundonsoundvideo

"A.I.R. MUSIC TECHNOLOGY INTRODUCES IGNITE SOFTWARE, AN INSPIRED NEW APPROACH TO COMPUTER-BASED MUSIC IDEATION AND CREATION

Ignite is a musician's creative partner, promoting experimentation and making it easier than ever to capture musical ideas.

Cumberland, R.I. (July 11, 2012) – A.I.R. Music Technology, the groundbreaking developers of acclaimed, industry-standard virtual instruments and audio processing tools, introduces Ignite, a new software solution with a revolutionary approach to music creation. A.I.R. will unveil Ignite at Booth 800 at the 2012 Summer NAMM show in Nashville, Tennessee, July 12-14.

Ignite is a discrete, standalone music ideation and creation software built from the ground up to spark creative ideas and enable musicians to build songs in an organic fashion. It's not another DAW with complicated controls or engineering-centric workflow. In fact, it's not a DAW at all.

With Ignite, musicians are set free from the rigid and stale interfaces of the past. Ignite conforms to the user's creative process and represents a fresh way of thinking about music creation—a way that complements and energizes a musician's natural workflow. It's a whole new way of creating, capturing, and sharing musical ideas and compositions, the perfect creative partner for a musician. Ignite helps musicians unlock creative energy and construct songs in an instinctive and satisfying way. Songs can then be exported to a sequencer or DAW if desired.

At the heart of Ignite is its non-linear Arranger, which replaces the traditional timeline and tracks-and lanes format. Just open the software, connect an M-Audio keyboard and start capturing musical ideas. Individual ideas can be snapped together in pairs or groups to intuitively construct entire songs. Ignite's Smart MIDI technology assists in the creation of chords, phrases, patterns, and complex arrangements, and five premium virtual instrument expansions are included. All of Ignite's built-in instruments and included expansions are based on A.I.R.'s professional virtual instruments, which were originally developed for Pro Tools.

“We are very proud to announce Ignite. This is the result of more than a year of research and development, blood, sweat and tears. It is exciting for the whole team to see it come to life,” said Samara Winterfeld, Principal Product Manager, A.I.R. Music Technology. “We're musicians who were never really satisfied with the music-making experience on any DAW, so we built Ignite for ourselves and for musicians everywhere who want to capture and develop their musical ideas in ways that are intuitive and inspiring. This first release introduces key features that are central to the product. We have many more new features in development and look forward to sharing them soon.”

Ignite provides an immediate outlet for natural music creation and ideation—its unique tab interface eliminates distraction, presenting users with all the tools they need for each step of the process and nothing more. Select an instrument, record, edit MIDI in the Piano Roll View, organize and arrange clips and more, all in a clean, inviting interface with straightforward controls and zero clutter.

With Ignite, musical collaboration and sharing are easier than ever. Its Sharing Tab includes direct links to SoundCloud, Facebook, email and more. Ideas can be shared instantly, empowering musicians to craft, collaborate and create songs together, whether they're separated by a few miles or on different continents.

Ignite 1.0 is focused specifically on the keyboardist's workflow. Beginning in Q3 of 2012, all M-Audio keyboard controllers will ship with Ignite included, and other brands in the inMusic family will include Ignite with select products. This initial product release will be followed by a number of scheduled releases designed to address the complete music creation process. These processes span content access, music creation, collaboration, finishing, publishing and live performance for both keyboard-based musicians and those recording audio from analog sources.

"1 Frame Demo Sounds

Some studio explorations using a BugModular 1Frame System along with a Kenton Midi-to-CV unit.

How things change - a few years back I had almost no interest in playing my modular designs in 'traditional' (//keyboard) manners, but by indulging in more studio play lately I've really come around to it. Here I use a little controller keyboard and then the powerful M185 Step Sequencer software from Defective Records (highly recommended!) to drive a synth-voice setup with two oscillators.

The 1Frame consists of:
CTL2 Joystick - versatile modulation/control
ENV1 Attack / Decay - your basic Envelope source
2 x SYN2B Quadrature VCO - strange to base a system on Sine VCOs! But the Lin FM on these is just fantastic and it is great having the counting/tuning dial for fine pitch adjustments on-the-fly. Tracking is *excellent*!
DD2 - LFO/DCMixer - a very useful little utility
PRC5 Wavefolder - harmonic creation! Add some grunt - but you can also use it as a VCA
PRC3A SV Filter - lush harmonic removals!
DD1 RingMod/LPG - two different forms of VCA - one fast and invertable, the other vactrol slow gloop.
UTL2 Output Mix - basic three channel output to the wider world
