New Analog Hardware Keyboard Synthesizers from Artisan Electronic Instruments

Published on Mar 16, 2015 Michael Bachman

"Introduction to the Artisan Electronic Instruments Baroque Synthesizer"

It looks like we have a new hardware manufacturer in town.  Above are three demos of the new Artisan Electronic Instruments Baroque synthesizer. You'll find three SoundCloud demos below. Further down you'll find a concept image of the "Victorian" mono synthesizer keyboard and teaser pics for what appears to be a desktop synthesizer and a eurorack module.

The Baroque as you can see is near completion. It features an all analog signal path with dual oscillators and 4-pole lowpass filter, VCA with digital envelopes, noise (able to be pitch modulated), patch memory, and an extensive modulation system with the ability to bitcrush modifiers - 3 Envs, 4 LFOs with 7 waveforms, nine modulation paths with 18 modulators to chose from.  All knobs positions are patchable and recordable. At the end of the first video he mentions the Baroque should be completed in the next couple of months, he is considering making a version without a keyboard and potentially smaller versions (see concept pic further below), and finally the Baroque will be able to be converted into a polyphonic version using smaller internal boards (pics of the current boards below).

Some pics & additional details:

The Baroque

"All Analog Dual Oscillator, Dual Sub-Osc, 4 Pole LP Filter and VCA sound path with 18+ modulators and modifiers.

40 knobs, 48 switches and/or LEDs, 4 LCD displays
CV and Trigger outs
Midi- In and Out plus a poly-chain bus."

The guts consist of the "Ottava (left) and Maestro (middle) [which] fit perfectly inside the Baroque Synthesizer.. with space for Rondo... the keyboard scanner is in the far right."

The Ottava is the analog voice source with digital noise (diagram below), and the Maestro appears to be the digital modulation source.

All wired up.

The "Victorian"

"All analog dual oscillator monophonic synthesizer with on-board analog delay effects and unique hand-built circuits. Custom built curved control panel and back, oak side and case. 4 octave touch sensitive keyboard."

"Up for sale is an amazing Arp Odyssey 2800 white face. This is a beautiful piece which has been previously restored/serviced. All sliders, switches, knobs, keys and jacks work flawlessly. Great condition, really clean. About a year ago the restoration work was done and it's been working flawlessly ever since. It stays covered in a clean studio and gets regular use. Truly amazing sounding and a pleasure to play in it's restored state...

Here are the details of what was done when I first got it about a year ago.

Everything was meticulously cleaned by hand during the restoration. Sliders were dismantled, cleaned, polished, lubed, tested and only the best internals were used resulting in an accurate and perfectly smooth operation. All original Arp slider caps are included! Each switch was cleaned and slightly lubed. The keybed was also restored, keys cleaned, buss bars and spring contacts polished, key heights leveled, and new key bushings installed so the action is like new and all keys trigger perfectly. After the work was done the Odyssey was calibrated."

Dark Interpreter simple setup/tutorial 001 no-input

Dark Interpreter simple setup/tutorial 001 no-input from pickledfeet on Vimeo.

"Ad-hoc first tutorial for the Dark Interpreter Mater Tenebrarum - http://www.1010.co.uk/org/darkint.html showing basic no input operation and simple test to see that all is well with the Dark Interpreter. Finger/skin input and feedback. Also my Dark Interpreter accumulated some dirt from live burial during NIME performance in London!"

First referenced in this Blackdeath Plague post.  Note there are three incarnations of the Dark Interpreter.  The Mater Tenenbrarum featured in the video above is the third.  The following is some info for the archives pulled from http://www.1010.co.uk/org/darkint.html, where you'll find additional details including samples and the price for each.  Note there does not appear to be an image for the second, "Mater Suspiriorum, Our Lady of Sighs".

"From the diviner of The Black Death, The Dark Interpreter (Towers Open Fire edition) is the ultimate plague-driven, finger sensitive, stand-alone noise processor, granular synthesiser and sound generator, merging digital and analogue processing.

The Dark Interpreter is modelled as a set of leaky, overlapping medieval village spaces within which various plague simulations run, and through which a motley of villagers (grains) wander, steered by electric fingers and touch.

Following the work of Thomas de Quincey, The Dark Interpreter re-casts the contemporary noise instrument as a "dark symbolic mirror", placing control of parameters on the skin, and strapping a psyche/plague village interface to the head. This is modern live coding with no screen, no keyboard and little conscious control.

The Dark Interpreter thus seeks to return all contagious execution to the skin, rewriting the history of technology as a plague which has always attempted to shift that site into the earth itself.

Details

The truth I heard often in sleep from the lips of the Dark Interpreter. Who is he? He is a shadow, reader, but a shadow with whom you must suffer me to make you acquainted.

[Thomas de Quincey. The Dark Interpreter]

The Dark Interpreter operates as contagious sample or village granulator, distortion, and unique sound generator based on a speedy ARM processor allowing for 16 bit sampling at 48KHz, and with a sample memory of around one second (vastly extended by undersampling).

The Dark Interpreter is delivered in three versions, all fully assembled and tested, and features high quality ALPS potentiometers, optional BOSS style 9v power socket (+9v/positive on the outside, negative centre, minimum 300mA) or battery clip, and full size (6.5mm) JACK input and output sockets. Please note that versions cannot be extended, they are not cross-compatible.

1-The eldest of the three is named Mater Lachrymarum, Our Lady of Tears.

The simplest Dark Interpreter consisting of one digital base board for solely digital processing and generation. Order with 9v socket (default) and/or battery clip on the back (please specify). Some skin control and entry. Mater Lachrymarum is recommended for complex granular sampling and is particularly suited for vocal re-processing.

2-The second Sister is called Mater Suspiriorum, Our Lady of Sighs.

The second Dark Interpreter consists of one digital/analogue base board (same as the above but fully populated board) with digital processing and generation extended by symmetrical custom filters, distortion, and switchable feedback paths. Order with 9v socket (default) or battery clip on the back (please specify). Some skin control and code entry. Mater Suspiriorum is recommended for harsh noise with relinquished control.

3-But the third Sister […] her name is Mater Tenebrarum,—Our Lady of Darkness.

This two-tiered Interpreter (The Black Stack) extends the Mater Suspiriorum with an algorithmically-designed, gold-plated skin breakout board and skin/EEG amplifier (strap it to the head, stick it in the earth, pull it across the skin, into the body). All signal paths and settings are accessible to the skin for complex hand re-routing, and feedback. Of course the device can be used without any wished skin transfer. Tenebrarum ships with 9v socket (not recommended for safety reasons) and battery clip on the back. Mater Tenebrarum presents the ultimate in harsh noise/granular processing with divined control."

Improvisation live @Modularsquare, avec Phantom Love et Cyril

Published on Mar 16, 2015 modularsquare

Bob Moog Foundation Raffle for Vintage Moog Liberation Synthesizer

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.
"Asheville, NC - March 16, 2015...

Today the Bob Moog Foundation announces its spring raffle for a vintage Moog Liberation synthesizer. The raffle, a fundraiser in support of the Foundation's projects, runs through April 20, 2015 or until all 2,000 tickets are sold. Tickets are $20 each and can be purchased through the Foundation's website. The winner will be announced on April 24, 2015. Also included in the raffle is an original owner's manual for the Liberation, written by Rock Wehrmann in 1980.

The Moog Liberation is distinctive in its form and function as a keytar, or guitar-shaped synthesizer. It was one of the first of its kind when released in 1980, and provided freedom to move around stage while playing. The Liberation was quickly adopted by such bands as Devo, The Human League, Jean Michel Jarre, Tom Coster of Santana, Herbie Hancock, Spyro Gyra, and more.

The Liberation is a strap-on, dual oscillator, monophonic/polyphonic analog synthesizer with one voltage controlled 24dB/octave Moog filter (VCF) and one voltage controlled amplifier (VCA). It boasts a polyphonic section, which allows for synth-like chords, a ring modulator, noise generator, syncable VCOs, and a ribbon controller, located in the neck portion of the instrument.

'The Moog Liberation has a special significance to the Bob Moog Foundation,' remarks executive director Michelle Moog-Koussa. 'Through our archives, we are the proud stewards of the Liberation prototype, a host of fascinating schematics, and a variety of conceptual drawings. The raffle will be a springboard for us to share other historic materials regarding this intriguing instrument.'

The instrument being offered is in excellent technical condition. It has been meticulously restored by the highly regarded restoration studio, Tone Tweakers. There are minor exterior flaws comprised mostly of minor chips in the paint as a badge of its vintage status.

The Liberation raffle follows the Foundation's successful fall 2014 raffle of a vintage Minimoog Model D, won by Danny Hagan of Statesboro, Georgia. Funding raised from the Foundation's raffles supports its innovative educational project, Dr. Bob's SoundSchool, and the organization's Archive Preservation Initiative.

Moog Minimoog Model-D SN 3073 at Control Voltage

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

For sale at Control Voltage

"The MiniMoog Model-D, born 9/10/1973, Serial # 3073
Historically, the Minimoog is considered the very first synthesizer for musicians. Compact, affordable, simplified and based on the megalithic modular Moog synths, the Minimoog became the most popular synth of all time, and still is to this day!

Prior to the Minimoog’s release in 1970, synthesizers were custom built to order, and required a great deal of technical knowledge to be able to wire up and create a sound. The Minimoog changed all that by hard-wiring the most basic but essential of components into a compact keyboard any musician could not only play, but dial up some great sounds on. Thus, the Minimoog was the first synthesizer to show up on the shelves of music stores around the world. It features three oscillators (one of which can be used as an LFO) that could be individually tuned and offered multiple waveforms.

The Minimoog's internal wiring configuration and front panel layout has defined the general synthesizer configuration for decades. Every adjustable parameter is so clearly laid out on the front panel that the Minimoog makes a great teaching tool for anyone interested in classic subtractive synthesis. Input jacks allow you to run your own external audio through Moog’s famous 4-pole (24db/octave) low-pass filter, modulation and amplifier circuits too!

Roland System 100 Vintage Analog Synthesizer Model 101 and Model 102

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"The synthesizer 101 is a completely self-contained analog semi modular single-Synth. It features a 37-key keyboard (no performance controls, velocity or aftertouch), and a controller. The design is similar to the Roland SH-series analog synthesizer. The controls for VCO, LFO, VCF low-pass / high-pass filter, VCA with ADSR, Noise, and portamento / glide effects are easy to reach. There is also a handy A-440Hz tuning oscillator, as shown on the Minimoog.

The expander 102 is upright behind the main synthesizer 101. The expander has in addition to the VCO, VCF, ADSR, LFO and mixer on sample and hold function and a ring modulator. The expander is an excellent way to expand the 101 to a system with multiple oscillators and synthesizer effects such as S & H and ring modulator. The expander 102 is much less than the 101 because many people only 101 could afford alone.

The synthesizers have all the right parts 3.5mm jacks to which they are ideal synthesizer with popular Modular modules eg Doepfer connections and can be extended.

The equipment is in fully working and also slightly good optical condition for their age. The 102 was partially revised a few years ago in Japan. Of course, there are some signs of wear and signs of aging such as scratches etc. See example in the pictures next to the S & H section. But the system is finally over 35 years old! It was owned by a rock band at that time, they modified it with DIN plug to quickly connect the two main modules using only one Din cable. This Modification is fully passive and could be removed but it was made at that time so i left it as it was..."

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"The SAS-20 was Korg’s first arranger keyboard. A built-in computer analyzed the melody played on the keyboard, and generated a complex accompaniment. This was the world’s first auto-accompaniment function of this kind added to a keyboard. Also, a more traditional chord recognition system was include

Built in 1983 this was on the same production line as other classic keyboards such as the Korg Poly 6 using similar engines and components, hence the reason this sounds so big and feels, with its metal casing and full size keys, more like a pro synth than personal keyboard.

It does lack editable synthesis but makes up for it with some nice features.

The Mic input is excellent, especially if you put a guitar through it, the pre-amp quality was really impressive and you can add an amazing 80s sheen to it by switching the chorus on.

The auto accompaniment, drums and bass lines all feature faders.

The drums sound great and very different.

The patterns and quality of the auto accompaniment sound different and unique rather than a bit cheesy, making it a really usable keyboard to own."
