Dub Down Tempo Synth Jam - Monomachine, Circuit, Bass Station 2
Published on Jan 24, 2017 Matt Greer
"Dubby, bassy, down tempo jam made with Novation Bass Station 2, Novation Circuit and the Elektron Monomachine
Hello folks,
Sharing a live recording of my newest hardware synth jam. Some of you may recognise the base elements here from the Circuit 4 Bar Challenge I did a while back. As I'm trying to quickly create new content for my Feb 11th gig, I decided it may be prudent to not re-invent the wheel for every tune so I started to reuse some under developed patterns. Hope this fresh take is enjoyed."

Synthrotek AVR Programming Interface Now Available
For DIYer's out there, Synthrotek's AVR programming interface is now available.
"The Synthrotek AVR Programming Interface was designed with the DIY-er in mind. With both a 10 pin and 6 pin ISP header on board, you can either program your AVR chips in the ZIF sockets onboard, or use a 6 pin ISP cable to program them in circuit! With an on-board crystal, you don’t need to worry about the order in which you set fuses or burn your hex file. It comes default with a 20mHz crystal, but can accept any frequency crystal that has the same foot print. (we recommend socketing it so you can change it for different projects!)
The AVR Programming Interface is capable of programming the following microcontrollers:
ATiny25, ATtiny45, ATiny85*
ATiny24, ATiney44, ATiny84
ATmega48, ATmega88, ATmega168, ATmega328
ATmega16, ATmega32 (“cockroach” style microcontrollers)
The AVR Programming Interface can be used with any ISP AVR programmer that uses either the standard 10 pin or 6 pin connection, including:
USBasp
Pocket AVR Programmer
Pololu
WaveShare ATmel AVR Programmer
A SET AVR Programmer
* When using the ZIF socket for the ATiny 25/45/85, insert the microcontroller with the half-moon notch facing up, and with the chip taking up the TOPMOST section of the socket."

"1978 Crumar DS 2 synthesizer - Number 47 of under 700 made in Italy. Rare. Seems to work fine but I am not familiar with this instrument. Missing one slider knob. As is.
The DS-2 is basically a monosynth with an added 44-voice polyphonic strings section. The DS-2 was one of the first synthesizers to use DCOs (digitally controlled osc.) making it stable in tune but maybe not as fat as VCO synthesizers. That isn't to say it can't sound fat...it can. Especially if you use the polyphonic string section and apply some slow LFO modulation to the pitch. This is a very big and good looking synth with a lot of knobs for instant hands-on control. And you don't need a hardcase, it's built into one. Just lift the cover and there it is (smart!)."

Good price on this one.
"Item is in great condition for its age. Was opened up and thoroughly cleaned. All functions work perfectly, Filters are all in tune with each other, oscillators in tune. LED screen is bright and clear, and has no dead pixels. Has the latest OS 3.5 which allows access to the hidden waves (via sysx patches or the free sq8l vst which also acts as a patch librarian (highly recommended).
Comes with the Original manual which is in good condition as well.
There is also a cassette of patches from a Music store in Ferndale, Mi. This is untested.
Also includes the somewhat rare SQX-10 (B) Sequencer Expander cartridge pre-installed. This greatly increases the amount of sequences that can be stored.
It is the later plastic body version, which is preferable over the much less reliable metal case versions.
It was also modded to run on AA batteries, so if the internal battery ever gets low, you will only need to pop in 2 new AAs."
Batteries for patch storage of course. Anyone confirm the comment on metal case versions?
Note some of the patch names on the left reference other synths.

EMW Alias DVCO Demo
Published on Jan 23, 2017 FatSynthDude
"Started out as a 'demo' and then went overboard with it. I tried to get every EMW module I own into the shuffle, but I missed the Multiwave Digital Oscillator. :-(
The lead sound that starts at the beginning is the DVCO in action being sent through a Boozy VCF. I tried to keep the composition sparse so that all the little changes done to that chain are always audible.
So how's the module? You know how sometimes you miss the sound of those crappy early digital synths like the Novation X-Station or the Red Sound Dark Star? Oh, that's just a few of us weirdos? Dang it. Well my favorite part of the X-Station when I had one was playing parts at the very upper range of its playability where the aliasing started coming through. I always thought those little digital artifacts were musical. The DVCO nails it, I think. So much so, that I'm really having to stop myself from buying a second one right now. Sent through the filter section of the Bitrazer, it just screams early 90's VA synths. And it's only $109!"

Note the ACO rather than VCO. ACO stands for Audio Controlled Oscillator. Square and Sawtooth waves that play in unison with input frequency provided. Includes a VCA and VCF, all analog.

"Semi-modular, audio controlled analog synthesizer.
Using our proprietary chip the Audio Controlled Oscillator already grants you many benefits, but when you add PWM, VCF, expression pedal input and foot-switches this analog synth turns into a performance craze.

I'm surprised at how underpriced these still are. They are not only virtual analog, but offer physical modeling, not available on other VAs. They were well respected when first released, but have somehow become underrated over time. Some argue the physical modeling on them do not stack up to the Yamaha VL synths. While that may be true regarding what they are meant to emulate, they still offer tonal textures and character not available on other VAs. That said, perhaps they should be compared to other VAs and not the Yamaha's VL series. They are monophonic though. The Z1 was said to be a polyphonic Prophecy. Although they share a similar synthesis engine, they actually are different - different parameters and slightly different presence if that make sense. It's too bad though, as a true poly Prophecy would have been pretty nice. I always wanted to hear a polyphonic version of the Prophetic Steps preset. You can find a demo of the patch and the Prophecy in general in this previous post.
